Alpenhof Bed and Breakfast - Media - Building
1
9.8 Excellent (65 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Media, Alpenhof Bed and Breakfast is within a 15-minute drive of Swarthmore College and Widener University. Free self parking is available onsite.
7.0 Good
Pros: The breakfasts were delicious. The location is on a beautiful country road surrounded by gorgeous stone houses with tall luxurious trees and big yards. At first we were in Monica's Room, just one bedroom and bath, but after two nights, the innkeeper asked if we wanted to switch to the cottage at no extra charge because no one was staying there. We said yes and the cottage was wonderful--bedroom, living room, kitchen, dining room, powder room, bathroom, day bed, deck overlooking the backyard and swimming pool.
Cons: The innkeeper owns three dogs, possibly part pit bulls, who are not tied up and who ran up to us and growled at us whenever we entered the property. They never attacked us, but it was unnerving whenever they were around. I understand they are for security purposes because the inn door is always open, but it would be better if they owner kept them tied up in front of the inn because it was kind of scary whenever they approached. At least if they were on a leash, guests could go around them without being afraid of an attack! The first room we stayed in, Monica's room, had no chair to sit in, so it was kind of uncomfortable when we were not there just to sleep. The cottage was awesome, but a little chilly, so we put an extra blanket on the bed and covered ourselves with an afghan when on the couch. The inn is on the crest of a hill and pulling into or out of the driveway is a little dangerous if you don't watch carefully for cars coming both ways.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: the location was great for my purposes (family reunion) and the breakfasts were excellent and cooked to order. the grounds were well maintained and landscaping was beautiful.
Cons: my only problem was that I could not get cell service at this location. However, that is a carrier issue and no fault of the B&B
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very accommodating
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I liked the eclectic artful environment. Attention to detail. Very clean and comfortable. It felt like you were in your own home not some else's. Very relaxing!!!! Amazing breakfasts! Judy and the two pups are very welcoming! A lot of history in this converted stone barn from the 1700's.
Cons: It's a BnB, not the Marriott in Springfield, PA so there wasn't an iron in the room but they provided one. No negatives!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It’s the best B&B experience I have. The house is more beautiful than the pictures. The owner is very nice and thoughtful, closed the window for us for the sake of my 19 months old girl safety. The breakfast in an artistic dining room is more enjoyable than the ones in chain hotels.
Cons: My room is cold but the owner gave us reminders when we checked in and there are enough down duvet and blankets in the closet so it wasn’t a problem for me at all.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Host, Roland, was wonderful. Great home made breakfast, beautiful property!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: GREAT EXPERIENCE! I travel to Philadelphia for work on a pretty frequent basis, but this week everything was either booked or extremely expensive. Looking for lodging along the regional line, I found Alpenhof. WHAT A GEM OF A PLACE!!! Loved everything about the place! Charming and very cool accommodations and the town of Media is a very neat place to visit and have dinner. I will definitely look for opportunities to skip my usual in city accommodations and stay at the Alpenhoff again in the future!
Cons: The only down side is working in the city required a pretty decent commute (uber to train station and 35 minute train to city), but Alpenhof had nothing to do with that. I will still stay there again.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a lovely time and what quiet well behaved dogs.....F A B U l O U S breakfast.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was fabulous & so delicious, The owner was very friendly & knows everyone by name. The bed & pillows were heavenly, I would highly suggest this Bed & Breakfast
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast made to order. started with scones, muffins, fruit, coffee and juice. Previous reviews did not do this justice. What ever you see listed...it was better. No hyperbole at all. Hands down the best breakfast we have ever had at a B&B. Arrived later than we had anticipated. Roland took it in stride. Made us very comfortable. Gave us recommendations for dinner. Downtown area is very nice to walk around in after dark. Common area of Alpenhof was very quaint quiet and comfy. Large soft leather sofa. Nice art work. Plenty of choices for tea.
Cons: Silly question. There was nothing to not like. Stay was as close to perfect as I have ever had.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved this place. Breakfast was fantastic.

Featured amenities include a library, microwave in a common area, and refrigerator in a common area. This bed & breakfast has 2 meeting rooms available for events. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available 24 hours), and free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fabulous sheets and beds, breakfast and porches.
Cons: Did not like the scented sheets. I don’t want to smell a chemical version of a strawberry while sleeping on wonderful sheets.
7.5 Good
Pros: Location was good
Cons: House and rooms could have used a bit of up grading.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Christmas decorations, ambiance, breakfasts, friendly staff.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Faunbrook was in a lovely setting close to the venue we traveled for. Its a college town although in the summer there wasn't much evidence of that. Breakfast was delish but no real variety if you were not inclined to eat what was served. Staff was congenial and very accommodating as we requested an early check in. The building itself is quite old but the obvious updated bathroom in the room we stayed in was lovely!
Cons: There was no mention of the 3rd floor room with only steep and short stairs to get too. That caused a slight problem for my husband who recently had 2 knee replacements.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location, setting and decor of the property were exquisite. The staff were extremely welcoming and genuine. The breakfast was out of this world - exceptional. I was only staying one night for business but would have loved to stay longer. Highly highly recommended!
Cons: Nothing!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Innkeeper is doing a good job of keeping this property as it is so we can appreciate the house as it was in the mid 19th C. Good breakfast contributes to lots of interaction among guests. A truly wonderful area to see Revolutionary houses, stone barns, mills, wandering streams, and Wyeth art.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful Christmas breakfast..very warm place..beautiful old property..close to Longwood Garden
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Cream cheese stuffed cinnamon raisin french toast - need I say more? Stay was superb in all aspects. Comfortable bed, beautiful decor, friendly hostess.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The property dates back to the Civil War. The library included some volumes which dated from the early 1800's. The wrap around porch will be lovely when temperatures are warmer. The decor inside with fresh flowers was lovely and comfortable!
Cons: The clawfoot tub was ideal for a relaxing soak but was not very comfortable for a shower. The water temperature and pressure were fine. The shower liner kept sticking to me as I washed. The towels were fluffy and absorbent.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The owner Lori does everything to make your stay as nice as possible! Breakfasts were amazing and unique each day and she catered for gluten free and vegan guests. The house itself and the furnishings are Americana 1850 with a sweeping veranda surrounded by spring greenery. Lori also was a treasure trove of information regarding the area, restaurants and history of the house. Often in West Chester on business I will definitely give the Warner a miss and stay here.
Cons: Just a tad far from the center of town - 20 minute walk or a $5 5 minute Uber.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Beds were very comfortable. Loved having a separate bedroom. Great breakfast with many items on the buffet.
Cons: There was a very large gathering at the hotel for a special event the next day and the group took over the entire seating area in the evening and it was so crowded that it was difficult to get a cup of coffee in the evening. I felt like I was imposing on their party.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great hotel around the place. The staff here is extremely friendly and helpful. I kept returning here for 4-5 times. Once I left my earphone in room and got it back after two weeks when I returned. The location is great, quiet and close to shopping area. Rooms are clean. Nice place to stay.
Cons: None

Pros: Cleanliness, Excellent Customer Service, Complimentary Breakfast..
Cons: None..
9.0 Excellent
Pros: great gathering space indoor and outdoor; god breakfast; central to food options
Cons: a little overpriced
10.0 Excellent
Cons: What the problem was for us was that unfortunately we had a medical emergency and had to leave the morning after checking in. We tried to talk to the girl at the desk and explain what happened and she very rudely said well you know whether you stay or not you are still going to be charged for 2 nights. Well, that is fine however you should work on your social skills. The delivery of how she spoke was very upsetting.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great value for breakfast, attendant was very good at keeping food items filled up.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great! Quiet, clean, good food and pet-friendly. We will return!
Cons: The only two things we found that we were not comfortable with were: The toilet was much too low for people our age; I would have thought that in a building built not long ago, that all toilets would have been the higher, accessible type. Second, the step to get into the shower was just a little too high; however, the multiple grab bars were very helpful.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff, comfort, location
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Quick check in and check out! They had DVDs at the front desk to choose from for the kids. Breakfast was included.
Cons: There was a smoke smell in our bathroom. I assume a previous guest smoked in our bathroom and I could smell it immediately. The front desk girl was ok, but I asked for pool towels and she sent out the housekeeper, who only collected all the used pool towels and never returned with clean ones for us to use. She had looked in the clean towels bin, so she must have noticed that there were none left. Hopefully these are not the norm and just a few random things combined during our stay. Otherwise, no complaints.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was wonderful! Very clean and modern. Great location, close to everything! The breakfast buffet was very good. Would stay here again!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved everything. It felt like I was home.
Cons: I loved all.

Pros: The room provided everything we needed. Our stay was with a quite location. Window provided a looking at our new day. This day was began with a taste breakfast to go to a birthday. the breakfast room on both day was filled with people children and teens. Although crowded everyone acted with respect to all. The location to 29, 202 and 30 provided quick movement to rapid parts where we where going
Cons: The T V, with my military past experience, indicate a short with one of the wires. I called the front desk; when we came back the T V was working. The front desk call it would be looked at. Thanks front desk
5.0 Okay
Cons: Room cleaning is terrible. Checked in at midnight after a 30 hour journey. The person at reception puts me in a room with an adjoining door at the complete end of the corridor. It was super noisy so I complained and had to pack all my stuff and relocate the next day. Terrible. I also told her 3 times I had stayed at the hotel for 2.5 weeks in January and she kept explaining the hotel details (at midnight after 30 hour journey) like she was on auto pilot. The room is not cleaned well (I overheard someone being told something about earning more points if you opt out of service) which I wasn’t offered. The first room had a brown stain on the sheet and stained towels (stained towels last time too). The person who cleans is terrible. I had no tissues or toilet roll at one point. The room rate is way over priced for this kind of cleanliness.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Cleanliness of the room was great!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful hotel.. The room was huge!
Cons: Can't think of one thing that I didn't like.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast buffet was very good, and seemed fresh. Check-in and checkout went smoothly. If we were to stay longer, there are several restaurants nearby, two within walking distance. The fitness center and pool are very nice.
Cons: A more stable television feed would have made our stay more enjoyable. The HVAC unit could be quieter. The hotel's location is very close to the Pennsylvania turnpike, so there was a bit too much traffic noise.
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: Location
Cons: Management, Substantially Overpriced, Unprofessionalism.

Pros: The staff
4.5 Okay
Cons: There was a bug in my room. I caught it and googled bed bugs. Looked similar. I took it to the front desk. They tried to reassure me that it was a beetle. Was it? It could have been, but stripped all the beds and searched the room to see if I could find any signs of bed bugs. I did not. Am now very uncomfortable. Was a beautiful and attractive hotel. Felt very safe. In a nice area. Just can't get over the bug thing, and certainly don't want to bring any of it's relatives home.

Pros: The hotel was immaculate! So new and clean. The staff was very kind and helpful. Breakfast was fresh, hot and delicious. SO many options for breakfast. I would stay here again for work or just personal travel! Right off a bike/running trail too.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Hotel clean and presentable. Friendly staff. Good Facilities. Good Breakfast.
Cons: The AC unit in the room sounded like a Wind Tunnel and kept me awake half the night. I mentioned it to the front desk, but they just smiled, apologized before giving me my invoice...
7.5 Good
Pros: Very good hotel for a few nights. The parking is free, a nice breakfast is included. The location is great and green. The room was relatively small but enough for two people and it’s modern. There was a coffee machine with complimentary (good!) coffee pods as well. WiFi is free and fast enough.
Cons: The only problem was that the bed is super soft and the pillows are too fluffy and firm for our liking. (Also, upon reservation we were charged $100 more by mistake, which then was corrected— so make sure you check your credit card charges.) All in all a pleasant experience.

9.3 Excellent
Pros: Hotel was very clean. Breakfast was excellent, they have made to order omelets Monday-Friday morning, which is nice, except when you have a 10 deep line. It would be nice to have hard boiled eggs as an option. Ice water would be nice to have as well. Fitness facility was nice, TV's didn't work in the workout room
Cons: The main hallways and stairways need some attention. They are very hot and musty smelling.
10.0 Excellent

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice breakfast
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean, modern decor and comfortable king bed.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very nice hotel. Lots of nice amenities.
Cons: I've stayed there the last two weeks for work and somehow each week a noisy family with children was placed above me or beside me. Well into the night the kids were running around, yelling and slamming doors. I had to enter the hall twice one night and tell them to stop. I think they got the picture the second time, but by then I was agitated and had a difficult time getting back to sleep. I did call the desk one night and it seemed to stop for a while but then acted up again. Still a very nice hotel despite some guests having no common sense.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Made to order breakfast. Very quiet and comfortable room. Elegant grounds.
2.0 Mediocre
Pros: They had a room for me.
Cons: No shower curtain, A/C not functioning well, no towels
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful hotel! Would definitely stay here again!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel in general is good. Easy access to all roads and having the pool as well as the arcade hall with kids is great.
Cons: Wifi connection is from the middle ages. Room 102 end of corridor bareley had signal and in the evening it even dropped dead. Also we had a family room with 2 double bed that were in fact more like 2 big 1 person beds. So with family of 4 we had 2 very bad nights Hotel is fine but not for families and you need mobile signal to have backup.

7.0 Good
Pros: Location Cleanliness Restaurant at the hotel
Cons: 1. Housekeeping- didn't clean my room in 4 days. I had to call and request 2. No fridge in the room! 3. Very little toiletries in the bathroom, not even a shower cap. Even body lotion was needed to be asked and it wasn't replaced. 4. Prices are steep, when you discover all this
7.0 Good
Pros: In fact I cannot rate the Inn at Swarthmore because when I arrived at the hôtel at 10H30 PM, they said that the hôtel was fully booked and they had reserved for me in an other hôtel 10 miles further. I was very disappointed that they did not informed me earlier. Apart from that they had reserved a splendid room in an Holiday Inn. The hôtel was really top.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful, perfectly located, very comfortable, great staff.
Cons: Small technical glitches getting folio but this was very minor issue
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Big room, sparkling new hotel and very close to the train station for a 30 minute ride into Philly.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent quarters, location, and staff
Cons: nothing
5.8 Okay
Pros: The room was clean and comfortable but the walls were incredibly thin. We had our tv on and received 2 noise complaints despite the volume being lower than 2 people having a normal conversation. We did not feel we were able to completely relax and enjoy ourselves as our neighbors called our room to complain if we laughed. As this is a relatively new hotel I was surprised at the poor sound insulation. Not a good place to have a romantic weekend as guests next door will be able to hear everything, and I mean EVERYTHING.
Cons: For the price I expected there to be some sort of complimentary breakfast. The restaurant food was ok but I wasn't expecting to spend over $200 for one night and breakfast.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff was very helpful. The room was large and comfortable.
Cons: It didn’t have a refrigerator.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very clean; well attended lovely property; staff very friendly
Cons: No lockbox for laptops. When I asked was told “ you can leave in the room, we don’t have crime here”. Crime is everywhere even wealthy communities; this came off a little snobbish and was the only blemish on an excellent visit.

Pros: The facility was clean and well designed.
Cons: The shower was a disaster. When the tub floor was wet it was slick as ice. My wife slipped the shower and fell out of the tub onto the bathroom floor, bruising herself. We have never encountered such a poorly designed shower. Very dangerous!

Pros: Our stay was wonderful. It was my birthday weekend and my husband contacted the property before we went to arrange some birthday goodies for me. When I got there the property manager had purchased flower, chocolates and balloons on behalf of my husband but also gave me a sweet little potted plant and a card signed by all the employees. We met the onsite maintenance man, the property manager, and the receptionist and they were all so sweet, kind and genuine. The room was extremely clean and our deck was nice and had a nice view of the country side.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Especially nice service at breakfast. I do not remember the name of the waitress, but I'll never forget her smile
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful spacious room heritage style. If you are looking for a hotel that is special regarding interior design, this is for you. Friendly staff with a hearty but professional and warm welcome. I was jet-lagged and very tired. It felt like I was welcomed home without ever having seen the place before.
Cons: Restaurant below is usually packed. Live music too. However it goes dead silent from around 10:30pm. I slept really well both nights. Still not advised for the early sleeper (prior to 10pm).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff was excellent, thanks so much!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The rustic look and feel made us feel like we were in another time period, the historic structure from the 1740's was really interesting to walk through, the breakfast was delicious, and just all the personal touches the staff did that made us feel like we were family.
Cons: Beds were a bit small
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Quaint, historical inn and tavern. Staff were super friendly and accommodating
Cons: Only thing I didn’t like is that the breakfast part of the B&B could have had some egg / breakfast meats. It was pastries only. Although the pastries were very good.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Staff was very nice. Dinner was very good. Pub was welcoming. Perfect location for our needs.
Cons: Room was a bit small.
7.5 Good
Pros: If you are looking for old world charm and comfort you will find it here. Comfortable room, small shower, but nice views.
Cons: the food had great promise, but the poke salad as a main course was tiny and no where near as good as you would get from a high street chain like Itsu. The oysters were dry and I think had been chucked far too early, and obviously the chef had prepped too many pepper studded steaks as one found its way into my beef wellington. despite having three bar staff in a small bar and sitting and eating at the bar, getting a drink or served was not easy.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing Inne keeper Linda and the entire staff! The breakfast was delicious and homemade pastries. The bar and the restaurant is excellent. I hosted a dinner party for 14 on Friday night. The pace was packed but the service was super! Sandy was our dinner manager and she was excellent. I had to leave at 4am to catch a flight and the innkeeper insisted that I have breakfast and coffee to go and it was all ready in the honor bar fridge. It’s a very quaint place - 1745! It’s charming and I was given the General Warren Suite. I can’t imagine the number of important people who slept or stayed in that corner of the house!
Cons: Everything was great!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Place was clean and no bad surprises. Cafe food was good.
Cons: Service staff at cafe rated poor. We waited and waited. Then ai received the wrong food choice. The bill reflected the more expensive item.
