Travelers’ preferences and needs provide the basis for car type recommendations when traveling in Banff. Compact cars like sedans make maneuvering and navigating narrow mountain roads easy due to their compact size. All-wheel drives (AWD) vehicles are suitable for Banffs mountainous terrain and during winter seasons. AWD vehicles transmit power to all four wheels hence firm grip and control on slippery surfaces. SUV vehicles are more suitable for off-road ventures as they have more traction and high ground clearance.
Provincial laws regulate the speed limits in Banff and vary depending on the type of road and the zone you are driving. The town-wide speed enforced by Banff town council is 30 km/h (18 mph). Bow Valley Parkway (HWY 1A) has a speed limit of 60 km/h (37 mph). Driving above the speed limit attracts a heavy fine or penalty. It is important to adjust your speed according to weather, traffic, and road conditions. Road signs in Banff are written in English, as more than 90% of Banff residents are English speakers.
Banff offers several parking options within the town center, providing easy access to attraction sites, shops, and restaurants. For non-local visitors, pay parking is available in Banff’s downtown, which is ideal for short-term parking. The bear street parkade and the Train Station public parking lots on Bow Avenue offer free 9-hour parking. Pay parking is available daily from 8 am to 8 pm, with free parking for the remaining hours. The parking charges are around C$7 (about $5) during summer and C$5.5 ($4) during winter. You can pay the parking charges with coins at any paying machine on the streets, while card payments can be made through mobile devices.

Well I haven't seen anybody I just dropped the car. The office was closed, but the cariboo lodge reception was open.Cons:
The underground car park is a bit narrow. It's difficult to park, therefore it's quite scary with a rental car.9.6 Wonderful

Sep 2019
Pros:
It took a while to get used to the car's buttons but it was a very good and clean car. The second person I spoke to who brought the car keys to the railroad station was very helpful and clear on return instructions. The return went very smoothly.Cons:
The 1st person I spoke to on ten (10) calls repeatedly gave me wrong directions for RR station pickup. I said repeatedly that I had was having trouble with phone reception but he kept saying "Call me when you get there." Also they didn't answer phones between 11:30am & 1pm on pick up or return days.7.2 Good

Pros:
Good car and value for moneyCons:
I arranged to collect the car at 9am, at 8:59 the Banff Avis office called me unfortunately I missed the call as I was on the way to the office to collect the car. When I arrived the customer agent advised there were no cars available until 11am. I advised her I had booked the car for 9am however the agent advised she called me to change the time at 8:3am. When I checked my phone the call was missed at 8:59, 1 minute before collection. This took 2 hours of our car driving through Banff National Park and we couldn't do this when it had got dark after 6pm.5.6 Fair

Cons:
Price too high. I had previously booked car from Banff to Calgary Airport for much less.3.6 Poor
Sep 2017
Pros:
Price beat the competition.Cons:
The full size I reserved due to hip replacement was not available so they shoehorned me into a low slung Mustang. The pickup location is in a mall with no street number on the building nor marquee placard outside...hard to find. I trusted the agent to point out the dings/damage to the dirty car and he overlooked the chip in the windshield...though when I found him after 20 minutes upon return he verbally agreed it had been present at pickup.7.6 Good
Jun 2017
Pros:
i got an upgrade on the car when I arrivedCons:
Their credit card machine was down... so they took an imprint of my card, left my yellow carbon copy in the car and when i called to make sure they destroyed it, no one answered, have yet to get a call back. Also left a small gift from a local giftshop in the back (just a magnet, touristy stuff, and have yet to hear back from the rental car place)... did not have enough people working for such a touristy place.2 locations in Banff
