Driving in France is not for the faint of heart. The smallest car you can get, the better.

Driving in the city of Marseilles is extremely difficult. People are excellent drivers, there are mopeds, cars, people, scooters everywhere, coming from all directions. The whole system relies on everyone paying attention and follow the rules. If you aren’t an excellent driver and committed to being 100% present while driving, and if you can’t read French traffic signs, it’s best to avoid Marseilles. Driving early in the morning or late at night when there are fewer people helps. So does parking close to your path out of the city, and walking or taking an Uber to your hotel. Get the smallest car possible. If you are from the US, you will find the roads and parking garages shockingly small. Driving outside of Marseilles is fun and totally doable, the French countywide is beautiful!

Do carry your license, better if international drivers' license. The place is very crowded and due to the destination being a peak tourist oriented, check your reservation. You may get even a nasty surprise on the day of, especially if you booked an automatic car.
KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Marseille
Renting a car is the most comfortable and convenient way to explore the city of Marseille and navigate its historic streets downtown. With a car, you can visit the city's impressive monuments, such as the Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde, at your own pace. A rental car is also the perfect option for travelers looking to discover the region of Provence, including the city of Aix-en-Provence, which is only a 40-minute drive from Marseille. It is also the best way to explore the French Riviera, with the popular coastal town of Saint-Tropez sitting just two hours away from Marseille.
All the big car rental agencies, including Avis, Enterprise, and Hertz, can be found at Marseille Provence Airport (MRS), which is located 27 km (17 miles) northwest of Marseille. The car rental counters can all be found on the ground floor, in front of Terminal 1. Desks are open from 7 a.m. to around 11:30 p.m. If you must contact your car rental agency after closing hours, call the reservation center. You will not need an international driving permit to rent a car with most companies in Marseille.
The roads in Marseille are usually easy to navigate as they are well-signposted, but you may come across some very narrow streets in the city center, so pay extra attention when maneuvering in tight spaces. Pedestrians always have priority on crosswalks, so you must stop and wait for them. Travelers planning on embarking on a road trip through Provence might want to do so on the weekends, as big trucks are not allowed on the roads. Beware of cyclists, as the coast's roads are very popular among the cycling community.
Marseille is one of the most congested cities in France, and traffic gets a little heavy during rush hour, so avoid driving around between 6:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., and then again between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., so you don't add extra time to your travels. Avoid driving through the main street, the Canebière, if possible, as the new tram mean less space for cars, often resulting in traffic jams.

We picked up a car in Marseille and dropped it off in Nice. At both locations the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. We also got an unexpected upgrade and the whole process was very smooth. We will definitely use Sixt again next time we are in France.

The car was dirty, it has been rattling my whole trip so it’s very noisy and when I went an hour out of my way to try to exchange it they would not help me and told me to call the 800 number which was in French and didn’t recognize my booking code. Very frustrating. Will never use them again as I paid a lot of money and got a lesser car then was promised.
The drop-off at the Nice train station was difficult. Not well marked and the garage was a not easy to drive in. You then have to go across to a different building (garage also not well marked or instructed) to return the keys. The person there also neglected to mention the $20Euro service fee to fill up gas.

Wonderful experience. We especially appreciated Adel who took care of us both on pick up and drop off. He was incredibly welcoming and funny. And he even gave our daughter a welcome to Marseille gift bag with a coloring book and pencils. Perfect service.

Pros:
The staff were very friendly and helpful (specially Julie)
Easy in and out, nice car, could have used a little more time and explanation of the car’s quirks-in particular, how to turn off the annoying beeps if the car exceeded the speed limit on the signs it read. Turns out that it read EVERYTHING, including signs meant only for trucks, that were valid only when schools were in session, speeds on off-ramps that we didn’t take, and so on!
