KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Dublin

  • Clontarf, Malahide, Howth, Bray, and Drogheda are some of the villages neighboring Dublin city. They are located within 35 miles of Dublin. If you plan to visit these villages, avoid renting the big cars as the roads in these areas are quite narrow and winding. Also, some streets in Dublin city, such as Capel street, manor street, and Drury street, are narrow, and navigating with big machines can be distressing. Therefore, look for small cheap car rentals in Dublin cars as they will not give you challenges when parking in such tight spaces. You can consider using mini cars as they are the most popular type to rent at Dublin Airport.
  • In most states, for instance, the United States and Canada, pedestrians must keenly check the roads to ensure the streets are clear. They have no right of way when crossing the street unless they are at assigned intersections or stop lights. However, this is different in Ireland, which also applies to Dublin. Here, pedestrians have no designated crosswalk and expect vehicles to stop for them. Therefore, paying extra attention while driving along with areas with heavy foot traffic is crucial. Also, slow down at shuttle drop-off or slow buses as passengers are likely to be dropped off.
  • If you find yourself on the road during rush hours, there is a better way to beat the traffic. Dublin has toll roads that are usually free of traffic congestion. Although they are a little bit more expensive, these roads are of exceptional quality and will minimize travel time considerably compared to older country roads. Toll road charges are paid at toll booths before connecting to these roads. However, you will not pay for the M50 at the toll booths as it utilizes the eFlow Barrier system. You cannot avoid passing through this system, especially traveling to or from Dunlin airport.
  • The best way to fully experience the joys of Dublin is by car. You will find renting a car is a much simpler way to get around Ireland’s capital city than relying on its hectic public transport system. Plus you benefit from having freedom to discover the best sights at your leisure. Naturally, you’ll want to visit the iconic Guinness Storehouse, which has free parking on nearby Crane Street. Or further afield, less than an hour’s drive outside the city, you’ll find the wonderful gardens of Powerscourt House in County Wicklow.
  • Less than 20 miles from the city center, Dublin Airport offers excellent opportunities for car rental. When you arrive at the Airport, finding the car rental desks could not be easier. If you’re arriving from a regional flight, you’ll find the rental desks in the Arrivals Hall at Terminal 1, or, if you’re on an international flight, you’ll arrive into Terminal 2 and go to the multi-story parking lot to book your rental car.
  • Firstly, you must remember that everyone drives on the left in Ireland and, as Dublin is a small city, you can expect to navigate much smaller roads. To get the best out of your driving experience in and around Dublin, stick to the main routes and avoid shortcuts, as you may get lost. The city is a rabbit warren of one-way and dead-end streets that can outfox even the most experienced drivers.
  • To save you from traffic jams and gridlock, always avoid the Dublin rush hour between 7:30 am and 9 am, and in the evenings around 6:30 pm. It’s also best not to drive near the Liffey River at these busy times. In the darker, winter months, be wary of fog and mist, which can affect driving conditions, as can the frost on higher routes.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Dublin for $20 or less
  • Book your rental car in Dublin at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Off-airport rental car locations in Dublin are around 31% cheaper than airport locations on average
  • Compact rental cars in Dublin are around 67% cheaper than other car types, on average

Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Dublin
Verified travelerMar 2024
The roads in Ireland were surprisingly much wider and in better condition than those in England, generally speaking.
MimiMar 2024
When you’re picking up the car, ask how to deal with the toll. What we did was just pay each time using a credit card, which is the easiest thing to do. But make sure that the car doesn’t already have a tag. If it does, then you can just drive through and pay them back later.

Get the smallest vehicle your group can fit in. Roads and parking spots are often tight
Verified travelerNov 2023
When in doubt stay to the left. The car was very worth it, and I recommend driving around the parking lot and getting a feel for the car. There is no shame in the "left" bracelet! It saved me multiple times. Street parking was a nightmare but thankfully we didn’t stay in the city, we drove around the country
lynneOct 2023
Absolutely buy the full insurance available! The roads are narrow, the speed limits are high for the roads, and there are wide buses coming at you on the roads. Because parking is expense in the cities, plan ahead where you can park.
BrunaOct 2023
The traffic is terrible in the town, but it's worth renting a car when you want to travel to another county.
Verified travelerSep 2023
Be prepared to drive a standard transmission on the wrong side of the road! Takes guts!
Verified travelerSep 2023
Driving in Dublin is alright. Roads around Ireland are beautiful! 😊
Verified travelerSep 2023
We got the car for a road trip. We didn’t need a car inside Dublin. You should inspect the car and tires and don’t let them give you a car that’s not in order. Don’t assume they will have done a proper inspection on it.
Verified travelerSep 2023

Always stay on the outer left on roundabouts Mind the left side Don't take yourself to serious All the places I went took CC including the toll stations
Verified travelerOct 2023
Make sure you understand driving on the left side of the road, and study up on roundabouts in Ireland!
MariaSep 2023
I’m sure your car is an automatic on your reservation, unless you drive stick.
Verified travelerNov 2023
This location is ok but you need to take the tram to access.
Verified travelerSep 2023
It was crazy! We drove in circles and then just left town.
Verified travelerSep 2023
Always keep left when driving. Look right when entering roundabouts.
saraiOct 2023

DonSep 2023
Comparison shopping is a must.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Video and check your rental thoroughly . Most vehicles are manual transmission so if you need an automatic request one. Have some form of GPS either your phone or built in the car. Roads in Ireland outside of cities are pretty narrow with limited passing areas and the occasional farm vehicle. People tend to drive slower than posted limit. Be patient. And Keep left : ie steering wheel to road centre line not curb side 😁 Be safe
SteveJul 2023
I think I'd suggest going straight to the rental companies and making sure all your coverages and requirements are booked in advance. It is very confusing and stress inducing when your unsure and making changes to the reservation at the airport / airport lot.
ronAug 2023
Rent directly through the car rental company. And qeeq and try to get a rental company on site vs having to deal with shuttle buses especially after getting off an overnight flight.
TraceyJun 2023
I did not drive in Dublin, other than the area around the airport. Country driving and driving in Galway, Cork, Kilkenny, and Waterford was very manageable.
Verified travelerJun 2023
The motorways were great - vast improvement over years ago. Just have to pay attention & use gps / navsat if you don’t know the area.
BillJun 2023
Definitely take the insurance. Our car was dinged in a car park during one of our family excursions. Worth every euro….
KayleeAug 2023
Was a smooth rental process, pick up went well and drop off went even faster!!
Verified travelerAug 2023
Great option picking up car at off-airport location.
MarkJun 2023
Full concentration required when driving in any city. Recommend automatic instead of manual transmission if your not used to stick shift, especially if your driving on opposite side of road from your origin country.
Verified travelerAug 2023
We spent most of our time outside Dublin, and when we did spend the day in the city, we parked at Carrigmines and took the Luas (train) into the city.
CynthiaAug 2023
I can’t believe that I’m supporting this, but travel insurance, or book with a company that will refund your money if you can’t make your trip.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Check your car before driving away. Make sure there are no scratches or anything that haven’t been registered. Make videos and photos as proof.
CronanJul 2023
Take your time and plan your trip each day. The traffic can be very busy at times so try to work around that.
TomJun 2023
Better to use public transit and ride share if staying in Dublin. Rent a car if you are touring the country.
BrendanJul 2023
It was challenging at first being a North American, but I got used to it quickly. Not a big deal.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Be flexible, renting in Ireland can be a nightmare especially with insurance. Choosing a good rental company is very important.

Driving on the left side can take some getting used to, be carerul. In general it was fine though.
DionAug 2023
Contact your credit card company ahead of time if you plan to leverage the coverage they provide.

Definitely map your exact route back to drop off. Even though we set it up on Google maps I missed the exits 3 times. Give yourself a lot of extra time in Dublin. There is a lot of traffic. Most of my experience driving was outside of the city and it was smooth sailing. No real problems with driving in Ireland it was a nice experience.

If you are used to driving left steering wheel cars it is a good advice to ask for automatic transmission . The drivers in Dublin are very polite and the traffic is moderate . It is a pleasure to drive in such places .

Pickup and drop off were easy. But they mistakenly charged me in-terminal drop off fee that shouldn’t be charged if I dropped the car at their office outside terminal. They also changed unidentified small money, $4.56, without explanation through the email. It will be settled but I’m a little annoyed.

Very friendly and personable, and after an hour wait, for service, the care they delivered was great.

Cons:

I had verified that I have full collision damage insurance with my credit card and had the policy, but they wouldn't give me a car without a letter or call from the card company. This proved impossible to do on the spot so I had to take the $15 Euro a day for redundant insurance.

Hello. I'm Gabriel and I'm 21. I booked and reserved a car in Dublin Airport for 7:00 pm 15/10/2022 VolksWagen Polo , I went to the front desk and they didn't let me drive the car for my years of age. In the Kayak it didn't show the age policy and restrictions. I paid additionally the Axa additional driving insurance for €9.99 I'll send u the screenshot for the proof that I didn't know about anything and I would like to get a refund from the car and the insurance if it's possible. Pros:

Nice staff, didn't pressure upsell the insurance like I was worried about. Drop off in the city center was not as easy as expected, due to the lack of parking instructions. Value was outstanding.

Cons:

Need to provide clear instructions that if you are dropping off at the lower Drumconda location, there are no parking spots in front of the office. You need to pull into a bus lane and park there, which isn't ideal, but workable.

However, the agent that helped us was less than helpful. it needed to be clearer that if you didn't take their insurance they were going to put 7500 euros on your credit card. he was unwilling to provide options. In comparison we dealt with another company in glascow and they provided good alternatives with reasonable costs. A much better experience.

I pay in advance for a full coverage insurance and at the counter for check in they told me that they didn’t accept the insurance I hired and charged me a ridiculous amount for a new insurance. Cons:

I used my credit card’s insurance guarantee, but nowhere in the reservation did it say that to do do ALSO required a letter from my credit card company stating (1) that they cover the Republic of Ireland, (2) they will cover the lace loss if totaled, and (3) the last 4 numbers of my cc account. So at the Europcar desk I had to make that phone call, wade through a few phone trees, then talk to a couple of humans. I did get the letter (great service by my cc bank!) but I was lucky - that approval process may take up to 24 hours. The Europcar desk agent said this happens “quite a bit” with the brokers because you don’t provide the information about what each rental car company requires to use the cc insurance waiver benefits. I suggest adding a link to your process that will take your to the specific rental car company page for their CDW. I did use the link provided for my rental but it did not say I would have to get the letter etc.

My credit card covered rental insurance fully and Europcar asked for an email from my bank/credit card company before giving me the car. I had to call my credit card provider and have them send an email to Europcar. Pretty damn ridiculous. All told, I wasted three hours getting all this sorted, and even after I finally got them what they needed, they put a EURO 5,000 authorization charge on my account, an obscene amount for a one-week rental. Also: There's a 25 EURO airport surcharge that I was never made aware of, and a 35 EURO charge to travel into Northern Ireland, which I also wasn't made aware of until the time of payment. I recommend you book elsewhere, because a Google search tells me that not all car rental companies charge for traveling into Northern Ireland.

Pros:

The car was grey.

Cons:

Upon arrival in Dublin we were shuttled to an outside airport location. The quoted vehicle was not available, altho we had reserved it several months ahead. In fact they said Dublin NEVER carries that model (a 9 passenger van). So we were given a smaller (7 pax) vehicle which was way too small for our 6 adults to enjoy for a week. The quoted price was 1/4 of what they ended up charging. We had insurance but they would not accept it and required we pay the Europcar offered policy. We have rented in many other countries without all the insurance demands. We would never have booked with them if the initial quote had been correct as other vendors had just what we wanted. Europcar is a real RIPOFF.
