Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Zagreb
I have found that the smaller the car you can use the better as often roads are one lane or very curvy and parking is often very tight. Depending on your comfort, would pay extra for automatic transmission but not a necessity. Stick with name brands. Make sure to tell them if you plan to go out of country.
BobOct 2024
Reasonable rates. If you do not buy additional insurance they will put a heafty hold amount on your credit card. Suggestion, have a card in the drivers name to use specfically for the rental. Also, they will inquire about your travel plans. They will add an adiitional 17.50 for going on a car ferry. An unexpected up charge that seemed a little dubious.

Go with a known “in airport” brand such as Sixt or Budget or Advantage.

Purchase your own gas. They tried to say that they could fill it cheaper than I could. Not true
JackSep 2023
It’s quite straightforward. Pay attention to your lane positioning as often lanes become right:left turn only, so you need to be paying good attention. It would help if you have experience driving in a bigger city like london where this also happens.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Not as bad as advertised. Left lane on the highway drives very fast, while right lane drives very slow......but kind of like it should be when you think about it.

Roads are in great shape… and that is saying something coming from somebody that lives in USA

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Zagreb
Visitors to Zagreb are highly advised to rent a car during their time here so they can take full advantage of what the city and the country as a whole have to offer. Some of the attractions that are made extra easy to visit with a car include the park Zrinjevac, Mirogoj Cemetery, and St. Mark's Church (Crkva sv. Marka). Also, with a car, visitors can take day trips to some of the neighboring cities like Samobor and Varazdin.
Booked a flight to Zagreb Airport? Well, if you find yourself in need of a rental car too, you will find that rental car counters are located both within the airport’s main hall and in an adjacent parking lot.
Zagreb’s streets are organized in a somewhat unique fashion in that a large portion of them are one-way roads. Rather than just smaller avenues and narrow lanes being one-ways, Zagreb instead opts for a traffic layout that is dependent on them. This can make navigating the city difficult at times, as many drivers are used to two-way roads being the dominant option in a city. However, if you plan ahead and have a GPS device ready, then you should not have too many issues navigating Zagreb.
Unfortunately for drivers, Zagreb does suffer from moderate congestion during rush hour. The daily rush hour typically runs from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and then starts up again around 4:00 p.m. and finishes up at 6:00 p.m. Some of the streets worst hit by congestion during rush hour include Avenija Dubrovnik and Selska Cesta.
Renting a car is fun because you can drive to various destinations near the city. In addition, you enjoy the freedom of driving to places you like at your preferred time. Thus, booking cheap car rentals in Zagreb saves you money on fuel to several attractions. For example, Pustolovski Park Postojna and Predjama are located 136km southwest of Zagreb, a two-hour drive from the city. Another iconic place to visit is Stari Most, located 49km north of Zagreb, one hour from the city. Furthermore, you can enjoy a getaway to Sljeme, three hours from the city, to hike in the dense forest.
Parking in Zagreb is accessible, including in the streets and national parks. You'll notice many cars parked throughout the streets. However, parking charges vary in various parking spots. Thus, choosing cheap car rentals in Zagreb saves you a few pennies for parking tickets. Luckily, you can choose public or private parking. Also, you can select a smaller rental car if you're traveling alone, such as a saloon car, that’s easier to park. Again, Zagreb is a safe city, and you don’t have to worry about parking your rental vehicle. Besides, you can contact Zagreb car rentals to ask about the best parking areas in the city.
Speed limits in Zagreb depend on the roads and places, such as schools and crossing zones. There are various speed checkpoints to ensure safety in the streets. However, Zagreb has quality roads, and drivers may be tempted to overspeed in incoming lanes and highways. When driving rental vehicles, keep a speed between 80 to 130km/h on motorways, 50km/h in residential areas, and 20 to 30km/h in cities. Most car rental companies insist on speed limits for all renters. However, the speed limits are signposted throughout the city to help new and older drivers drive at the required speed.

Easy process to get and return car. The staff were helpful. When I had to exchange car because of a tire issue, it would have been nice for them to deliver the car instead of me going from one Sixt dealer to another.

Beware of Sixt in general, but particularly the one in Zagreb. While SIXT has reported record profits, you will find out how they are making all that money when you visit a center to pick up the car that you booked online, and are forcefully coerced into buying insurance and protections that you don’t need.

Both pick up and drop off was difficult with this company. My husband was the only driver, but they made us pay for an extra driver since I, his wife, had rented car on-line. The agent wasn’t friendly. Then when we went to drop off the car, no one was at the office, and the phone number listed on the door was wrong. We Finally found someone to leave the key with at the hotel. They told us that the cost for the car was very high. We will never rent with this company again.
We rented our car in Zagreb. The office was clean and the man was very polite, professional and helpful. The car was very clean and drove smoothly…no problems or issues whatsoever. He explained well and gave helpful advice. No problem with the return of the car. Anton, at the airport was very good. Spoke good English and we appreciated his kindness.
We enjoyed our car rental while visiting Croatia. Checking-in and returning to a different location and the number of days was a reasonable rate. The only downside was the 2,000 euro hold that was placed on our credit card because we declined additional coverage. Also, we were charged an adiitional 17.50 for going on a car ferry. An unexpected up charge that seemed a little dubious.

When I ordered the vehicle my confirmation said for 7 people and 6 bags and showed a picture of a van and also stated VAN in the description. When we arrived it turned out to be a standard SUV not a van as stated and we had to pay an additional cost to get a van so we could accommodate our family of 6 which included an elderly person. They were friendly and did try to accommodate us but I was disappointed that the special rate offered for the van was not honoured and I had to pay an additional $500 euros.
The pick up and drop off are a little slow. You go to the office, then around the corner to the parking garage. One of the tires looked under inflated, so we had them too it off. That took 20 minutes. We got a snack at PanPek while we waited. Those were the only blemishes on an otherwise great engagement. The car was nice, and the staff were even nicer. I would use Oryx again.
Good morning, My flight was canceled so I was not able to arrive at the pick up time. I looked for a phone number for ADDCAR and there was not one online or in your confirmation email. I looked for a way to contact Kayak but there was nothing available so I lost this rental reservation. Can you refund me for this reservation? Thank you for your help.
First off, everyone should know that this is not an airport rental - we had to take a $$22 taxi to get to a building under construction with no signage. There was no assistance for about 20 minutes as we waited for the rudest woman ever. We had purchased additional insurance and she refused to give us the vehicle until we paid another $10 per day for their mandatory insurance. Car was dirty. Had 3/8’s of a tank of gas and they told us there was zero damage….but there was! Luckily we took photos before we left the lot and made notations on our contract. They also placed a credit card hold of over $1500.00 “for incidental damages.” When we arrived into Zagreb, there was no one answering their phones and the numerous other car rental counters didn’t know who they were. Please remove them from your rental options to help future travelers avoid this mishap.
There was only one staff at the counter and he was doing his best but we waited 30-45 mins to get a car we had paid and done the check in for in advance. He attempted to charge us a fee for arriving after 9:30pm as it was just after 9;30pm but I said we wouldn’t pay because we had been waiting in line since before 9pm. The car we received was far less quality vehicle than the car I booked. Disappointing. The size was fine. The mileage was fine. The car didn’t have the power we wanted to get up the hills and mountains we had to navigate. Several times we would step on the gas and it wouldn’t accelerate. Which if you’ve driven in Croatia you know you need to do quickly as drivers drive very fast. Could barely get into one ferry. Overall it was ok. It was clean and held our luggage. Disappointed we didn’t get the type we booked as we had wanted that. Staff did their best and the drop off was easy.
The car was great and the prices was great. The employees were friendly and helpful.
