Definitely reserve in advance. We tried to pick our car 2 days early and could not. If you really want Avis, you'll possobly get faster service with Avis Preferred status. Be sure you pick a number at the pick up counter ASAP. And then stay close by because if they skip you, you start over.

Go to the kiosk inside even of your email says to just go to the car pickup place after preregistering. Some of the roads are really steep and tight. Do not recommend a car in the city, but good for taking day trips out of the city to less populated places

Make sure you pay attention to which location you’re booking and if you are getting standard or automatic. Cars are SMALL here—so err on the side of a larger vehicle

You do not need a car in Lisbon itself. It is a walkable city with good public transportation. Only rent a car to leave or drive to Lisbon. Driving in Lisbon is challenging. Locals drive very fast, but they are courteous. There are many roundabouts.
Verified travelerFeb 2024
The most challenging things about driving in Lisbon are driving and parking on the narrow streets, adjusting to roundabouts if you are not familiar with them, and also most of the vehicles are manual transmission, so you will either need to make sure you're in practice, or specifically select one with an automatic transmission.

For a small airport it can get quite busy and the whole car rental business, but especially off-airport and late in the evening can easily eat 2 hours or your time. Metro station is 50 meters off the arrivals hall, easy to buy a pass, easy to get pretty much anywhere in the city, especially if combined with taxi/Bolt for the last mile. So do not rent a car if you want to save time and you don’t absolutely need it, cause it can be more hassle than it is worth.

Lisbon you do not need a car unless cisiti g the outskirts which are amazing and well worth it!! Surprise is off site of the airport and we had to uber as we could not find shuttle. Other well known rental companies are located in the airport. Do not get a manual!!! Many hills snd tight parking spaces.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Lisbon
Drive on the right-hand side in Lisbon. If you need to overtake a vehicle, always do so on the left; overtaking on the right may result in a fine. Every passenger in your vehicle must wear a seatbelt before the car starts moving. Children under 12 are not allowed to sit in the front passenger seat. All vehicles, including car rentals in Lisbon, must yield to priority vehicles such as law enforcement. Additionally, give the right-of-way to any vehicle flashing its headlights. In Portugal, unlike in some other countries, flashing headlights signal a request for the right-of-way. Throwing trash out of the car window or driving without a license is punishable by a fine. A blood alcohol concentration (BAC) exceeding 0.05% results in a DUI. Using a hand-held device for calls or texting while driving is also illegal.
Grab a cheap car rental in Lisbon and set out on an adventure to popular day-trip destinations. Sintra, home to famous attractions like the Castle of the Moors and Pena Palace, is only a 50-minute drive from Lisbon. About 40 minutes south of Lisbon is Arrábida Natural Park, known for its white sandy beaches and lush mountain ranges. Drive just under an hour east of Lisbon to reach Cascais, a charming seaside town with numerous restaurants, museums, and lavish villas. The best times to explore these destinations with a rental car are during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October), when Lisbon’s roads are less crowded due to fewer tourists compared to the busy summer months.
Traffic in Lisbon can be quite frustrating, as is common in any major city. The worst times to be on the road are during rush hours, which occur from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., and again from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.. The heaviest congestion is typically seen at the intersection of EIXO N-S and the Vasco da Gama Bridge, as well as on the 25th of April Bridge. Other congested areas include the A8 motorway heading northeast, the A1 heading north, the 2nd Circular, the A9, and the A5. Accidents and breakdowns, especially on the 2nd Circular, are common contributors to traffic jams. Additionally, Lisbon's roads are often very narrow, particularly in the Old Town, which further exacerbates congestion. If possible, avoid driving in this area.
After exploring the city of Lisbon, take a scenic drive along the coast to soak in picturesque views of the water and breathtaking landscapes. If you're heading south to Faro, consider stopping at one of the many Blue Flag beaches, where you can enjoy swimming, biking, hiking, or simply sunbathing. Along the way, you’ll also have the chance to savor a variety of seafood dishes at local restaurants in Sintra or Porto Covo.
As an older city, Lisbon has narrow roads that leave little room for street parking. From Monday to Saturday, there are a few paid street parking spots in the city center, with a maximum parking time of 2 to 4 hours. However, there are parking lots and underground garages scattered throughout the city. These typically cost between €18 ($20) and €44 ($50) per day.
The streets around Lisbon are narrow, tight, and often wind quite a bit. Therefore, it’s best to rent a small, compact car that’s easier to maneuver and control. A smaller car will also make it easier to find parking in the busy, historic areas of town.
Commuters in Lisbon tend to drive very fast, especially on the freeways. However, the speed limit on the highway is 120 km/h (75 mph). When driving in the city, you can travel at speeds of up to 90 km/h (55 mph) on main roads.

Be careful! This location takes advantage of weary travelers and upsells insurance. I stepped away to get coffee for our long drive after a red eye flight. My husband didn’t know I had already purchased ample 3rd party insurance, plus we are covered by our regular insurance. The pushy sales guy bullied him into 400euros worth of extra insurance—told him it wasn’t optional. When I returned to learn what happened and argued with the guy, he told me it was too late to refund. Terrible! Do not book here.

There was a self serve kiosk to pickup car but you need the Avis/Budget app to use it. Downloaded app, created account just to get error saying my reservation couldn’t be loaded. Proceeded to Avis/Budget counter, waited over 45 minutes for my turn.
Car was great! Only issue was that the language for the on-screen controls was in German or Dutch and I could not find a way to change it. Also, not knowing what the toll charges will be until later is concerning. But it all worked out fine. Great customer service.
The pickup location was incorrectly stated in the instructions. After pre-regestering online, the instructions told you to to to the car pickup spot in terminal 2. But when you got to car pickup, they told you to go to terminal 1 to finish registering before you can pick up the car. After doing that, the car still took about 1-2 hours to pickup, after the agreed upon time. The staff was nice and the car was nice. But the pickup instructions were wrong and I was not notified of the expected wait beforehand.
Centauro tries really hard to sell insurance which is 10x more than the cost of the rental. Agents whole demeanour changes so once you let them know that you’re opting out of the insurance and going with credit card insurance.

The agents we worked with for pickup and drop-off were friendly and knowledgeable, but the pickup and drop-off experience was chaotic. Centauro needs more signs and better processes so customers know what to do during pickup and drop-off.
We got a flat tire and couldn't find anyone to help us because it was 8:00AM and nothing was open. We tried calling many different offices and no one could help. Once they finally opened at 9AM, they said it would be 45 min for a tow truck and taxi, but we were already late for our flight and would have missed it, so we had to pay for an Uber.

Turisprime was good. The lack of communication from kayak as to where to pick the car was very poor . We were only told to go to the airport and not that there would be a shuttle and where ? I w wasted almost 2 hours of our trip due to the lack of clear communication that there would be a shuttle . Other than that , after we finally called and had someone tell us that lack of information on kayaks part it would have been very good.
It felt a bit like a scam charging me €100 for a small scratch on the hub cap which was probably not my doing. The guy was a bit too quick to catch it. Also have not received necessary documents for my insurance claim yet.
Purchased insurance from kayak and then was told I needed insurance again REQUIRED at the place. Either a deposit of 2,100!! Or full coverage non refundable of 170. The car was not good and I wish we used a different company like Avis

We had an overall great experience renting from Drive on Holidays. Our car was awesome (clean, barely used, etc.) and the nice woman who helped us was sweet. I had read reviews prior to renting from this company and was a tad concerned, but we had no issues that would keep us from renting from them again. The only downfall in our experience was that we waited at least two hours in line at pick up and that pushed our first day back a bit. It is true that they have you put down a $3,600 (maybe it was euros?) deposit, which I thought was pretty intense and had never experienced before but eh, we had no issues.

The pickup directions were terrible. Info came from car rental app, so it’s hard to tell if it was Drive on Holidays fault or the rental car app that was the issue. They sent a pickup address that was at some residential Apartment complex. Tried calling but no one picked up. After some digging on the internet I found the closest pickup center near the airport in hopes it was the correct location. I was lucky that it was, because if you’re late they typically give your reserved car to the next person. I spent a bunch of money on two xl Ubers trying to find the pickup location… very ironic Once I finally got there, the service was fine and the process was smoother.

Great experience overall and the team was very helpful. My only complaint maybe it did take some time to pickup the car once we were in the office (the shuttle came very quickly at airport so no issues getting to the office). We waited in line for close to 2 hours to pick up our reserved vehicle at Lisbon Airport. That's just from when we pulled a number to when we walked out to get into the car. That's not at all what we would expect from a major rental company. The staff, once we got to the counter, was great. Polite and patient. The car was great - like new condition, clean, comfortable. The pick-up and drop-off staff in Lisbon and Porto were lovely. The car had a manual transmission, which was fine, but for some reason the cruise control was disabled or not optioned at order for this vehicle, so we had no cruise control for our 2 week road trip around Portugal. This made the drives a lot more tiring and not as fun.

100% bait and switch. Lower rate but mandatory payment and usage of their insurance regardless of included instrance on my American Express. Basically doubled the rental rate so zero savings.
We showed up at the dollar location which was run by hertz, who insisted on selling us a different more expensive package as they did not honor the one we purchased online from dollar, including the insurance. The same thing was happening at the two counters next to ours. It was a take it or leave it situation. It’s a scam, never again
Kayak did not inform me who I am getting the car rental with. When I arrived at the airport, I learnt that the "airport car rental pickup" was not at the airport but a shuttle ride away. This should have been communicated to be at the time of making the reservation. Unlike any of the other car rentals, Green Motion asked me for a very high security deposit of €2,400 for a 1 day rental. I had no option but to pay it because the booking for pre-paid. This was not a great experience and given that I had booked through Kayak, I should have been communicated this information at the time of making the reservation.

The pickup and drop off locations were incorrect and it caused us a €15 Uber ride and an hour and a half delay on our very tight time line. It made for a very stressful trip. I probably wouldn’t rent a car using this service again. The phone numbers we were given for help did not work and we had to guess the drop off location, and we made it 2 minutes before they left for the day! If we were people who were not as intelligent as ourselves we would have had to drop off the car the next day. VERY stressful experience to the start of our vacation. Additionally when we picked up the car they put us in the wrong car! And when I was driving away they came running out and had me come back and switch cars.
