Car Rentals at Cockburn Harbour South Caicos airport

Pickup at the airport was chaotic. They gave us a car and as we were about to leave I asked for a copy of the contract. This triggered them to look in their system and they suddenly weren’t sure if they were giving us the right car or had our reservation. Totally bizarre. Even thought I had an email showing our reservation they had to recreate the entire reservation in the system which took a very long time. The car they gave us was a mess. Hubcaps held on by zip ties, engine sounded like it was going to die and the car would shake at normal speeds.

Woman who checked us in was very confusing and told me GPS didn’t work down there (it did), so I had to guess my way to our hotel when I first got there. Entire front end of car shook violently. Windshield wipers needed changing. Couldn’t clear my windshield during a downpour. They DID replace the car with a model which did not shake violently. Location has no address that was accessible through GPS, and no one at their Airport counter knew their address to return the car. We were a half hour late for our flight, driving in circles trying to find it. It was off the beaten path; tucked away. Car was a Suzuki, that we barely fit in. They could have test driven the car before they rented it out, and replaced wipers on both cars we had. The young man who brought us the replacement car was very nice, but all the women at the desk were condescending. Would go through Grace Bay Rentals next time.

Car was clean and in good shape. Check in and return was easy. There was a charge for a second driver which I find is just an up charge.

Luxury SUV

What a cluster this was….car was a lemon, service was worse. They lied about gas gage despite my having pictures and video at pickup, then threatened me when I called them out on it. Check engine, tire warnings and past due oil change lights flashing at pickup , which took 90 minutes.

I reserved a Toyota Camry for $150/day which is crazy. The Camry I was given was a 2013, definitely not what I was expecting. The check in process is slow and very manual. Make sure you you take pictures/videos of the entire interior and exterior of the car. This office will closely inspect the vehicle upon return and charge you for any little scratch. The check out process is also very slow. The staff is nice.

You don’t have a choice of right or left hand drive so be prepared! The staff was willing to try to accommodate our needs but changing cars would have doubled the price.

Kayak directed us to a pick up location that no longer exists in Providenciales so Avis was scrambling to find us a car at another location. They came through tho! Kayak search location needs to be updated.

It was awful! I arrived to pick up the rental only to be told that they did NOT have a care for me. The gentleman dry rudely explained that he extended the car to someone else and therefore I would have to wait until after the weekend to receive a car. POOR service!

Car was older and A/C did not work well. If the A/C would have worked it would have been better. We rented a minivan because we had a large group. Also they did not have drop off at the airport only pick up.

Minivan

This was the worst rental experience we have ever had. The vehicle we were given was not large enough for 6 adults, a child and numerous pieces of luggage. Child car seats were sub-standard. Quite frankly, it was a rip off. We will never use Payless again as a result, and will be sure to share our experience on social media to warn others.

Minivan

The vans were perfect and affordable for our large party. They accommodated both our people and our luggage., and the drove. The rentals were a little worn but we were on island where everything is imported , so they don’t just have new shipments of cars hanging around. The rental was affordable , however the credit car hold cost more than the car. They did disclose this information so it wasn’t a surprise. The staff was patient, pleasant and weren’t pushy. The rental location was right down the street from the airport so it was ideal for returning. When returning, give yourself a little extra time for them to process your paperwork and get you back to the airport. Remember you’re on a relaxing island, no one is in a rush.

Minivan

I had requested a minivan. The rental place didn’t even have minivans. I wanna make it clear that it’s not that they were all rented out, I mean that they did NOT own any minivans. They, and Kayak, lied to me about the vehicle I was going to get. Imagine my surprise when I get there, with a family of 5 and a ton of luggage, and they only have a tiny SUV. Oh, and by the way, the seatbelts did not lock, so my toddler’s car seat was never properly secured

Booked mid size Kayak rental, local Payless branch said it came through as economy and they have nothing to do with Kayak or even the corporate Payless/Avis branch. They declared the Kayak pricing was irrelevant. I ended up paying 30% more for an economy car through that local branch because I couldn’t get to another rental company without walking a mile with my luggage. Felt like a scam by everyone… Kayak, Avis/Payless, and the local car rental company acting on Payless’ behalf.

They did not show up, or answer their phones. When I did finally reach then the next day, they were rude and unhelpful. I will never use them again and will dissuade my friends and family from using them too. I think it devalues Kayak’s brand to be associated with them.

I have never had a better car rental experience ever and I have traveled all over the world renting cars. It started with a call the day before arrival to confirm the reservation and answer any questions. Upon arrival they were literally cheering my groups arrival at the desk in the airport. It was wonderful! We were escorted out of the airport directly to the car that they had waiting outside the airport. Never had that before. But the best part of the entire rental was on the last day when 30 minutes before departing for the airport I could not find the keys. I called the local office and Mary Ann Bagvio answered and told me not to worry they would come out to the house we were staying at and get us to the airport. As it turned out with the keys that they brought we were able to open the trunk and found the missing keys. The other lady who came with Mary Ann, Marraey who was just as sweet and helpful drove the car back to the airport for us and Mary Ann personally delivered us to the front door of the airport with ample time to catch our flight. Customer service doesn't get any better!! I will be a loyal Sixt customer forever!!

Pros:

Easy pick up and drop off. Not a lot of time in office doing paperwork and car was clean.

Cons:

The car radio was is Japanese and I couldn’t get it to play music. No lumbar support in seat.
