It was wonderful to return to the Maldives after too many years away and be able find a traditionally styled resort. Too many of the places that I have and had looked at prior to booking, were so 'generic' that you could have been anywhere on the planet. The Maldivian way of life, the dhivehi language and customes, like their islands are being slowly erroded and only by enhancing the reef protections will these oases be preserves. It would be a travisty to loose them. Fihalhohi Island resort is one such place, where the importance is not only placed on the customers comfort but also keeping the surrounding 'real'. It is a fabulous place. "Yes" the grouting could be replaced in the bathrooms (in our room but it is sound and functional and the only minor critisism I could possibly find. The resort was getting it's annual make over while we were there, but was no hinderance to the customers. The service was exemplary, the buffet food way above the norm in presentation and variety, and the cleanliness without reproach. This is from someone who has stayed at a few Maldivian resorts and not a day tripper, I suspect that the negative reviews for this resort have come from 'day-visitors', who don't get into the Fihalhohi swing. There is a well ballenced melting pot of peoples, languages and cultures but all have a "Good Morning", "Guten Morgan", "Shubh Prabhaat", or "Ohayōgozaimasu" and a smile...! There was a fair selection of excursions, but for us they were not needed, as we were there to relax and recharge and I could not have found a more suitable place. Heartily recommended for those who want to step back to when the Maldives originally started their adventure into tourism..!! We wil deffinately return.... soon.
Having to leave...
1. Exceptional snorkeling at house reef. 2. Location. 3. Blue Lagoon Bar
1. Coffee. In the canteen you have to seat and wait until your dedicated staff person notices you, and comes to fill your cap. I drink a lot of coffee in the morning, asked for a pot, and was refused outright. Basically, I had to run after every waiter to have my cap filled again. This is the worst part. 2. DJ night finished at 1 am. Awful, lots of noise. You come that far for peace and quiet. Some days the gardener starts hacking coconut leaves at 7 am. So between DJ night, coconut hacking and tropical birds (at 4-5 am) - good luck with your sleep. 3. Any traveler should avoid a shopping trip to Guraidhoo local village, offered by the Fihalhohi hotel. They divide tourists in pairs, and every pair has a local guide (to maximize tips). You walk around for about 1 hour (not much to see as tsunami wiped our original houses). After you are taken to a dedicated shop or two (shops are divided among the guides), where you are harassed to buy awfully expensive souvenirs. No market, no bazaar there. This is a disgusting experience as you are treated as a bag of money, no matter your circumstances. You are not allowed to enter other shops, and you are made to feel uncomfortable if you did not buy anything. Incidentally, better souvenirs are available at the airport, cheaper, even though still very dear. 4. Generally whatever you ask, the first answer is "no". Somehow, this is cultural, I suppose. However, some of the staff are very kind and attentive.
Everything. Literally.. extraordinary experience in fihalhohi. Stayed in Waterville and premium room. They even upgraded my booking. Every night they made special with different events. The best holidays we ever had.
Everything was excellent. Courteous staff and friendly environment. This resort is clean and tidy. Best for couple and families.
Food was excellent in an all-inclusive arrangement. Staff is extremely nice, polite and very helpfull. The whole island is very neat and clean all the time.
Wi-fi is pretty bad. Sometimes not accessible at all, in other times pretty slow. Some of the staff should improve their English.
