Our accommodations were comfortable and quiet and breakfast was plentiful and tasty.

The Gin Gan - Hexham - Bedroom

Overview Reviews
With a stay at The Gin Gan in Hexham, you'll be within a 15-minute drive of Northumberland National Park and Housesteads Roman Fort. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location for visiting southern Northumberland. The breakfast was extensive and delicious and served in a delightful room. We had use of a separate lounge area with colour TV and books of local interest. It was in that separate lounge that the host/owner (Ann Walton) plied us with tea and cake on arrival. A luxury B&B and we would happily stay there again.
Cons: Our car's satnav took us past the front entrance to the property and turned us left into a small housing estate - missing the Gin Gan on the right hand side! We reversed out of the housing estate and found the Gin Gan second time around instead. The wifi coverage upstairs in our bedroom was almost completely non-existent (despite being told it was available in advance) so I suggested to the host / owner (Ann) that she invest in a range extender plug for the broadband service - which she agreed to investigate.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The house is beautiful both inside and out. The host is a lovely lady, very welcoming and helpful with lots of local knowledge. The breakfast was the best we'd had on the trip.
Cons: Nothing, we loved it all.

We really appreciated the thoughtful extras such as face flannels, cosy bathrobes, peppermint teabags and tea & cake in the sun most afternoons. Also the last an of OS map and guidebooks. The breakfasts were also wonderful!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location
7.5 Good
Pros: Ideal location for what we planned to do. Enjoyed having 3 rooms so my daughter and sister didn't have to share.
Cons: No 'book of using the facility'. The oven and grill were unusable as there was no instruction book and all the markings had worn off. The handovers were a bit too casual and informal.
7.5 Good
Pros: Clean room
Cons: Location is not central. Rooms very small.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I was looking for a bed and breakfast which was reasonably central to Hexham, Haltwhistle, Whitfield, Haydon Bridge and Allendale. Rye Hill Farm was perfect for me not only because it was in a most beautiful part of the Northumberland countryside but it was well away from town centres and the associated endless scramble for paid parking. Staying here was an added bonus because we were near some of the Hadrian Wall forts such as Corbridge, Chester's and Vindolanda which we also visited over the weekend. Rye Hill Farm is a working farm with sheep and horses not to forget the lovely dogs who are also family. The room was slightly small but very adequate for me and my husband (who joined me over the weekend); very clean, with a comfortable bed, great hot shower (with lovely fluffy towels) and for me - an unexpected extra - the sun in the afternoon was most welcome. Elizabeth, the manager/ess, is a most gracious person who made us feel comfortable and welcome in her home. The breakfasts were made to order with cereals and fruit and then your order of eggs/bacon/sausages/tomatoes/mushrooms all freshly cooked. Her delicious home made bread was much appreciated. Thank you for hosting us on this family/historical adventure.
9.2 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Stunning views, the wild north!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Lovely farm and breakfast. Great Host. Amazing views. Great place to say nearby.

Cons: All very good
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Lovely room with en-suite bathroom. Immaculately clean. Great selection of fresh fruit in room and also lovely biscuits. Breakfast was really good except for the toast. The staff were lovely - very pleasant and helpful.
Cons: A couple of things stopped me from giving this place a score of 10. I didn’t find the bed very comfy. Despite the thick mattress topper I could feel ridges on the mattress. Perhaps it needs a new mattress? I was really disappointed with the toast at breakfast - it just seemed to be supermarket bread that was too well toasted (almost burnt on one side). The wonderful selection of jams/marmalades deserved to be put on much better quality bread/toast.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff, the food, the ethos
Cons: Nothing to complain about

Pros: The location, food and staff.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff v friendly. Very clean comfy room

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great room and the food was exceptional
9.0 Excellent
Pros: location & ambiance
Cons: coffee could have been sharper but very minor quibble
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Nice location and it’s a.castle with history
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything about the Langley was a delight and a highlight of our five weeks in England.
Cons: We had three adults in the Cadwallader Room, which is sold as a double. I understand that the sofa bed is provided for a child but I found it very uncomfortable. This was marginally improved by putting the mattress on the floor.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved our stay here. The food was absolutely gorgeous and all of the staff were so very attentive and professional. The Castle is stunning as are the grounds which are kept immaculate with a family of peacocks roaming the grounds. We initially booked to stay in the castle and had to move the date forward so were not able to have the original room that was booked but we were situated within the castle grounds, a two minute walk, bed was super comfy and the room was lovely and spacious, bathroom beautiful with a fantastic shower and all decorated beautifully...In the morning after breakfast which was delicious, you are invited to be taken on a tour around the castle and given some historical information. we absolutely loved it.
Cons: We loved everything!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic period property in a beautiful location. Highly recommend
Cons: Nothing
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Staying in a castle! Well, we stayed in the separate annexe, with a view of the castle. Very comfortable and large-ish room, furnished as you'd expect of a castle. That is, certainly not modern, but not too chintzy either. Just nicely appointed. Dinner and breakfast in the restaurant in the castle were both excellent. The grounds are beautiful and worth a walk around. As is the tour of the castle offered to guests. Very interesting and great views from the roof.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great setting Rooms
Cons: Price of dinner and breakfast, having to pay extra for coffee or cooked breakfast
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Imposing, impressive castle with historic origins. Lounge memorable. Very comfortable well equipped room. Secluded location with dramatic setting. The cooked breakfast was outstanding. Highly recommended.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location, graciousness, friendliness of staff, both waiting staff and reception. Interesting tour of castle. Delicious, beautifully cooked breakfast (Haddock, spinach, egg). Room upgraded, Very dog-friendly. Thank you!
Cons: Super experience let down by dinner: excellent starter, very promising, but main course mediocre. Fillet steak (requested med-rare, but dried out almost juice free, some pink but had to search for it, significantly smaller than expected (8oz)) redeemed by pepper sauce. Presentation poor - complete contrast to starter (scallops), almost as though there were two independent chefs. Steak supplement deducted from bill improved value proposition.

7.1 Good
Pros: Clean and comfortable

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great food, great service. Brilliant location.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Tea and coffee in room was lovely. Great pillows and plenty of mirrors. Peaceful and charming!
8.0 Excellent
Pros: This was a final overnight stay on my (and my two brothers) coast to coast cycle ride so good to get a room with three single beds. Great shower. It is right on cycle route 72 so no issues with finding it or the route out the next day. There is secure bike storage and the staff were very friendly letting us use it The storage is in a storeroom off the back yard and a bit of a squeeze for our three bikes and next morning it looked like they had been moved so someone could get at something. No damage done and I think this was done carefully. We had a meal there that night and the food/beer was excellent.
Cons: Many long distance cyclists ride expensive bikes and if they make up a reasonable part of the pub's clientele it would be great if the owners could put a little more thought into the bike storage which was adequate but a bit tight.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Red Lion was an absolute gem of a find via the Stay In A Pub site. Sue, Andy and their staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room and generously sized bathroom were very comfortable and well appointed. The pillows were beautifully soft! Meals were all generously sized and delicious especially the lamb hotpot and pies. Full Cooked breakfasts were great! We loved the fact that the bar was “the local” and we got to meet some of the residents too. A beautiful location, close to Hadrians Wall and historic sites, wonderful 11th century Coaching Inn. So glad we found it and stayed here.
7.1 Good
Pros: The pub was traditional and the landlady and staff were friendly and efficient. Both breakfasts and evening meals were very good. Situated in a quiet village.
Cons: The room was basic yet cluttered. It had an old fashioned air and although clean needed an up date. Two single duvets on a king size bed! Taps in bathroom were loose and bathroom door was annoying.
7.9 Good
Pros: The breakfast was amazing Iron and ironing board The showers were excellent Comfortable beds Fast easy check in and check out Able to charge drinks to room
Cons: The creeky floors in the corridors Room was very hot
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very good breakfast
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The food was exceptional as was the staff. The pub had a great friendly ambience and most importantly the beers
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The Red Lion is in a lovely village and was ideally situated for visiting Hexham and the surrounding area. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the staff are really nice.
Cons: The Red Lion is a popular pub, consequently there was no peace and quiet until after 11.30pm Friday and Saturday night. Unfortunately our room was directly above the smokers corner, it was too warm to close the window so we had no choice but to inhale the foul stink of cigarettes.

Pros: Fab food and dog friendliness
Cons: Nothing to dislike
7.5 Good
Pros: Good rate for property in area and very scenic location and comfortable bed!
Cons: If you’re going to attend an event at slayley Hall or healey barn make sure you book transport before arriving
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was cooked each morning in a special kitchen by the cheerful and highly competent Becky. The staff were happy let us play music until around midnight which is an increasingly rare thing it seems and did not happen at Twice Brewed where we had last year's musical break.
Cons: It is very hard to fault our stay - OK it's not luxurious but all the things were there to make life easy - both beds had bedside tables and working bedside lamps and there were hooks for coats towels etc. We're continually surprised at the number of places which seem to think hooks are an unnecessary luxury!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A really great place to stay, we were given a warm welcome, our room was immaculate and spotlessly clean. We enjoyed dinner in the lounge and watched a game of quoits in progress. A really pleasant experience and a credit to all involved
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Compact but comfortable room. Good food and good beer! Very welcoming place to stay. I left early before breakfast.
Cons: Nothing!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff and fantastic food
Cons: Bed could of been a bit more comfy
7.1 Good
Pros: The rooms were very clean, and we especially liked that a key was given to the building so you could come and go as pleased which was great for us. The views were beautiful. We did not eat here as was attending a wedding close by but we did see the food being served in the pub and it looked fantastic! The lady that checked us in and out was lovely and so friendly.
Cons: Although mattresses were comfy the beds were of poor standard. Me and my partner stayed in a twin room as the only room left last minute. When my partner sat on his bed numerous slats fell out. There is no one on site and as we were returning from a wedding at 1am felt a bit bad calling the manager out so waited until check out to inform them of this. Walls are very thin too, and work was being done on the room next door which started at 8am waking us up and we ended up leaving at 9am despite check out being 10am.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Comfortable, very friendly and helpful staff who went above and beyond
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very comfy beds

8.3 Excellent
Pros: The views from the location were lovely. The extras in the bathroom and bedroom were great, very thoughtful.
Cons: There was a smell of dog in the room (though I didn't see or hear a dog) so I'm wondering if it was from a previous customer or something to do with the water system.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very comfortable stay, the room was very clean. Tea and coffee making was available and a television in the rooms. Bed was very comfy and all linen clean. WiFi speed was good, though getting connected took a few attempts. Breakfast was freshly cooked and very nice. Very secluded location, getting up the drive is best attempted in something with decent ride height, but we got to the top in a Lotus none the less.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very clean, lovely view, nice food, very close to wall
7.5 Good
Pros: Fabulous brewery, pub and accommodation with clean modern rooms.
Cons: We stayed in room 11 which was one of the dog friendly rooms. Unfortunately there was an issue with the temperature in our corridor and the room could not be cooled down. When the window was opened it was so loud because it was above loud extractor fans and so we were unable to sleep due to the heat / noise. The dog was far too warm and panted all night. Our friends stayed in a superior room (number 6) and did not have the same issue and had a lovely comfortable night.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Twice Brewed is perfectly located to explore Hadrian's wall, it's in a beautiful spot. The food was excellent, including dinner in the pub. The room was comfortable, though they had just turned on the heat and we found it incredibly hot everywhere. The bathroom was tight, it was a bit awkward getting out the door but it was very clean.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff, location, food, facilities all great
Cons: Room 9 was not a good room for me personally because I’m a light sleeper and there was too much noise from the main road/car park and also vent which was directly attached to the wall by our window. On my next stay, I would ask to change rooms as I didn’t sleep as well as I could have if I had a better location within the hotel
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location and food
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful welcoming hotel and staff. Amazing friendly helpful staff
Cons: Room at the back of the hotel was freezing but staff put the heating on for us
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location for exploring the Hadrians wall sites in the immediate area. Beer brewed on site. Views from dining room through large glass doors. Looked recently re-furbished with excellent facilities. Very walker friendly
Cons: Bathroom rather small. Extraction pipes outside window gave some background noise.

7.5 Good
Pros: Very nice. Freshly cooked. Adding marmalade/jam would be helpful for the toast
Cons: It was all good.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Comfy room, great food and excellant hospitality from the hotel/bar team
Cons: As a frequent buisness traveller i understand that people can get up early before many leisure travellers. However some guests staying at the hotel for work couldn't have made more noise at 6am when leaving their rooms if they tried. This meant 1st day of my holiday was just like a normal work day. This shouldnt put travellers off though as the Black Bull is a hidden gem.
10.0 Excellent

Pros: Nice evening meal and beer garden
Cons: It was a shame breakfast started so late (8.30!!) as we had to leave early. It would have been nice to have been offered something basic we could take away.

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Charming place in a beautiful location. Room was inviting and comfortable. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Bar area and dining rooms were full of character and the food was good and plentiful.
Cons: Signal for tv was so poor you couldn't watch it. Had broken toilet seat which though reported wasn't fixed during our 3 night stay.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything one needed. Well appointed and nice to be able to eat in. The evening staff were excellent.
Cons: Being under pressure to leave it was annoying to have to wait to place a breakfast order due to a loud private conversation between staff in the kitchen. Some drunken building workers destroyed the otherwise beautiful atmosphere of the dining room. We couldn't get out quick enough.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Cosy atmosphere, friendly staff.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: A nice room in a characterful and welcoming pub. The manager and staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
Cons: However, the room was above one of the bars and the noise of conversation could be heard until closing time at midnight. There is no parking at the hotel and luggage drop-off meant chancing the yellow line at the side of the pub. However, the manager was very helpful in providing a parking disc and directing us to the town car park not far away. Overall, good, but rather expensive for what it was.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Good showers, lovely staff
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Lovely room and even though it was on the first floor above the bar and at the front of the hotel, it was incredibly quiet. Bed was huge and very comfortable, so had a great night's sleep. Food was also good.
Cons: Hexham wasn't as bustling as we thought it would be, so glad we only spent the one night there. Stayed mainly to visit Hadrian's wall so achieved what we set out to achieve. Nothing we didn't like about the hotel.
