10.0 Excellent
Pros: My mother and I were due to stay at Azumaya on the 2nd, but misfortune struck on our way there in the form of a big tree fallen across a narrow, rocky, winding, single-laned mountain road, due to the typhoon the week before. So we were stuck, unable to go back down or go forward. It took more than 6 hours for someone to come get us and it being autumn, we lost all daylight by the time we got down the mountain. We were still about 4hrs out from the Azumaya and we weren't confident of driving there in the dark on non-familar roads. While we were still on the mountain, we managed to call the staff of the Azumaya and with our limited command of Japanese, managed to tell them about our incident and apologise that we had to cancel our first night. We showed up the next day and to our utmost surprise, the staff of the Azumaya conveyed to us in gestures and simple Japanese that they were sorry we had to go through such a distressing incident and that they were upgrading us to a suite with a premium dinner set. There was even a kind, handwritten note in English from the young lady who took our call the day before, Miss Yuki, enquiring about our well-being after the incident. As most of the staff there can't understand or speak much English, Miss Yuki even carefully prepared typed out notes in English for us, introducing and explaining all the wonderful dishes we had at dinner. The room was superb, and so was the ensuite open-air onsen bath. Beds were infinitely comfy. Such kind, generous hospitality absolutely warmed our hearts and will never be forgotten. We got to experience truly great Japanese hospitality, and we will DEFINITELY highly recommend anyone travelling to the Kaminoyama area to stay at the Azumaya. Thank you to Miss Yuki and the rest of the staff at the Azumaya for making our stay there a truly unforgettable one.
Cons: Loved everything! Nothing should change.

The pension is not in the busy street and the host can pick you up or drop off and give you a ride to the ski area. There is hot spring/onsen bath (indoor and outdoor) equipped. It is good for relaxing after a day of skiing.

Pros: What I liked the most was an outdoor onsen and hospitality of the hosts. Food is influenced by the mediterranean cuisine and it radiates the interest of the owner in cheese & wine and 'joie de vivre'. Cons: Pension Apple is not located exactly in Zao onsen but it is easily accessible by pension bus or car.
