THE HOTEL Altis Belém Hotel & Spa is located in Lisbon’s Belem neighborhood and overlooks the Tagus River, representing a contemporary view of the Golden Ages of Portugal during the discoveries in the 15th and 16th centuries. Here, guests find the Michelin-starred Restaurant Feitoria and the BSpa by Karin Herzog, an awarded signature spa that is unique in Portugal. MADE BY ORIGINALS Shortly after its inception in the 1970s, the Altis Hotels group became one of the largest in Lisbon. Founded by the Martins family, the group aimed to set a new benchmark for luxury in the Portuguese capital, through carefully building a portfolio of hotels with unique character, exceptionally well-trained staff, and a respect for Portuguese traditions and way of life. The Martins family have successfully transposed their family values, such as loyalty, ambition, and tradition, onto their properties to stunning effect, as well as promoting Lisbon’s cultural, social, and sporting heritage. ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN The hotel’s intersecting geometric structures simultaneously catch the eye and blend in with the surrounding environment, thanks to reflective glass fronts and an overall transparent personality. Architect João Almeida, of Gabinet Risco, also created an undulating surface of moveable shutters that shield rooms from sunlight. Inside, an exotic and minimalistic aesthetic is found throughout the 50 rooms and suites, and is embellished by artworks inspired by the places Portuguese explorers have traveled. Monochromes and contemporary furnishings also feature, while references to the Orient, the Americas, and Africa appear in communal spaces.
