Staff friendly and courteous Hotel looked a little tired but was comfortable
Olde fashioned comfort The room was a little hot
Easy to find and good parking A noisy bed, found this a little off-putting! Bed needs updating to something a bit more solid!
Nothing was too much trouble and everything was very relaxed. While our room was fine, the bathroom could do with a bit more of a clean ie. under the loo seat, get rid of the brown around the hinges of the loo seat etc. Also the power shower seemed to be having a funny turn. As you can see, nothing desperate, but if my bathroom was like that at home, I would ask my cleaner to please do better!
Excellent lounge, comfortable rooms, good food. Old building, maze of staircases.
Staff were friendly and helpful
Nice hotel with character - no information re. parking given before arrival (difficult because of the fair) and wrong information re. breakfast times in the room so we missed it.
A hotel for travellers. A busy restaurant, a nice bar, good breakfast and clean rooms. Everything you want after a long daytrip. The morningwalk along the Highstreet is a 19th Century experience of those .
the room was absolustely filthy - bath not cleaned after last occuspant - dust an inch thick, bedding had holes in it, carpet so dirty did not want to walk on it without shoes - shall i go on
The situation of the hotel The food was dissappointing
Friendliness of the staff, and customers: good food, good wine, altogether a pleasant atmosphere. I know it sounds unfair, but, being slightly deaf, young children screaming does not go down well!
The owners were very friendly and helpful and tried to make our stay as enjoyable as they could.
staff friendly and food very good proximity to main road meant sleep disturbed. \shower not working properly.
Nice pub atmosphere with well kept beers. Small but good menu. Friendly staff. Warm, clean room with modern en-suite. On site car parking for guests. Short drive to Marlborough, Swindon and local historic sites. No dislikes.
Very comfortable modern good sized room.
Good comfortable room separatate from main part of the inn. Food very good and reasoably priced. This is not a complaint on y part but anyone not comfortable with animals might not like the fact that a large labrador dog and a cat appear to have the run of the restaurant area. having said that the dog gave us some moments of amusement as it has trained its owners well to do its bidding by devious means.
Peace and quiet in a nice size room with adequate facilities
Warm welcome, friendly staff. Bed was to soft.
The staff was very helpful with directions. Nice proximity to Avebury. This is not a negative, but because this hotel is so old, be prepared for comfortable and quaint.
Ecellent area for everything .nice people and very friendly pub lovely surroundings. A bit of noise from traffic ,but that could not be helped you got used to it.
Only two tv-channels in room 1 - other than that the room was of excellent nature.
The staff were very friendly and helpful with our requests. The bedroom was large and comfy with sparkling clean linen on the bed and nicely co-ordinated. Overall excellent value for the money we paid. Our room was very near the generator which kept us awake most of the night. As the new owners had only been there 3 weeks we were told in the new year they would be doing renovations and then it would be soundproofed so hopefully this should solve the problem. We wish them good luck in their new venture.
the children loved the stream and pond out back, which had fish and grass snakes.also the private door for guests which meant we did not have to walk though the inn to get to the back garden.very safe for the children to enjoy the back garden. room 3, which we where in had a noisy generator in the room next door, i would stay there again but ask for a quieter family room.
Staff Hot water or lack of and pressure
food was excellent proximity to main road
Mobile phone use virtually impossible
We had a problem with the booking that lay soley with Booking.com and the staff very kindly sorted it out for us. It was excellent value for money and the staff were extremely friendly. Nice surroundings and very relaxed. The rooms upstairs would have benefitted from double glazing as the noise of traffic from A4 was quite noisy early in the morning.
Rather rude staff - felt as if having cooked breakfast was putting them to a lot of trouble. The room looked clean and newly decorated but the toilet handle fell off, the light over the sink switched on and off randomly and the light in the centre of the bathroom was only ever dull. The one small toilet roll was not replaced. The tv flicked from colour to black and white. We mentioned the lighting situation but nothing was done. The restuarant food was another bad experience...oh and when we checked out they tried to charge us at a higher rate until we produced our booking form. At which point the rather grumpy lady got even more grumpy. An awful b&b!
Fantastic food, plenty of choice cooked to perfection and hot! Lovely relaxed atmosphere in friendly surroundings. Rooms were very clean and comfortable.
My room was very comfortable and overlooked a babbling brook which was really lovely I would love to go back in the summer The complimentary drinks were basic a hot chocolate drink and a variety of teas as well as a biscuit would have been very welcome
Very high standard of Suite Rooms; tastefully decorated; comfortable bed and excellent size bathroom & shower; good bar area. Experience somewhat let down by poor receptionist. Dour demeanour, said very little and generally not what a hotel wants to give as its first impression/contact with guest
The degree of cleaniness may be questionable given the open half bottle of water we found in the room.
Very Noisy Heating System, Also to hot in room
The helpfulness of the staff, the comfort of the rooms, the atmosphere of the hotel,my childhood dream of staying at the Bear was realised. The lack of water in the bathroom the morning of our departure due to a power outage, pumps could not function and upstairs rooms were without water, a generator would have been a solution to this problem. Breakfast prices were very high.
Lovely location. River meandering along the back of the property was a great soundtrack.
I was made very welcome by the staff. I found the hotel to be up-to-date without losing that essential 'Englishness' of an old building, wherein lies its charm. One had to get used to being housed in the old coaching stables which meant having to go outside in order to get to the main hotel facilities like the bar and dining room etc.
We had a large room that was very comfortable and clean. We found the experience relaxing and the staff friendly. No
lovely location, attractive modern decor, had a nice quality feel to the hotel You would not get fat on the portion sizes for dinner. Some of the tables in the bar are at the wrong height for the seating, which made eating at the table rather awkward. The designer has unfortunately chosen a beige toned carpet throughout much of the hotel, which whilst it looks fairly new, already looked in need of a deep clean, which was a shame, as the decor was generally very nice.
A well furnished, if small, room. Comfortable bed, usual facilities and sparkling clean bathroom. Breakfast was good and service attentive. Room was too small for more than 1 night stay.
Comfort, and the extra touches in the bedroom. Bed very comfortable and hosts very welcoming Nothing I did not like
Clean and quiet. Small room and ensuite for price charged
Nice location, Spotless clean bedroom, Comfy bed, lcd tv Minor niggle Poor mobile reception in the area, hence could not use my mobile or internet broadband for my laptop
The staff was nice and the rooms were clean. It did not meet my expectations and I realized that I wanted something a bit more uptown. But for what it was, a low cost business man's hotel, it was good.
A friendly welcoming hotel. The service was very good and the breakfast was excellent. Would certainly stay again.
This style of hotel is far superior to the well intended but no less 'plastic' service and facilities provided by larger establishments, let alone chains. Much thought a effort has obviously gone into creating an environment which is stylish without inflicting the proprietors' tastes on their guests, thus its atmosphere is very welcoming and relaxed. Needless to say, our room's facilities reflected this. Dining out with family on the evening of our visit (a very iffy curry!!!) did not permit us to sample main menues but, where breakfast gave good clues, nobody will be dissapointed in that respect. In short, our visit was most comfortable and great value. Nothing, once arrived; thus, only the delay on the junction between a34 and m4.
Friendly, pleasant atmosphere. Standard room very small.
Simplicity, staff informallity. nothing
The accomodation was lovely and the hotel really nice. We had our evening meal and breakfast there, the food was fresh, cooked well and very tasty!.
We had a get together with 7 "old friends" we found the environment very suitable for our get together. Nope
very smart well equipped bedroom and shower - quiet and comfortable - staff very friendly and helpful didn't like the 10 percent automatically added to dinner bill - didn't like the dog in the dining room - otherwise ok
Excellent location and easy to find, just a short distance from the M4 yet set in the midst of beautiful countryside. Rooms were very tastefully furnished. Hotel and inn staff were very friendly and welcoming - Jonny is a legend! Food for breakfast and lunch was excellent, beautifully presented and well worth the price and the real log fire was to die for. Nothing.
Beautiful room at an excellent price with the bonus of having breakfast included as well
Excellent service from friendly staff. Very good food and beer. Busy bar (sometimes very busy) with friendly locals. Very well appointed room, quality fixtures and fittings. Room too small (or else furniture too large !), room felt very crowded indeed.
Great welcome and considerate care for my disabled wife None
Lovely clean and modern rooms, comfortable bed, nice atmosphere and plesant staff Only point being the bed was close to the wall, so one of us had to inch round the side to get into bed, and no bedside cabinet on one side, which is always handy to have..
Convenient for our needs No. It was well landscaped and remarkably quiet considering its nearness to the motorway
Quiet with good facilities. No
Good size room with comfortable bed. Little or no noise from adjacent motorway. Poor choice of food in adjacent motorway service station.
Nothing The room and bathroom was old and dirty with mildew on walls and tiles and there was no hot water _ the pump was broken but despite this they let the room
Very convenient location and friendly staff. Easy to get some food and drink next door in the services. Nice TV. The bed was like sleeping on a sheet of plywood.
It was convienient on the Motoway but quiet, the price was good and the evening reception staff very pleasent. The seman stain on the sofa no noticed untill day light on the morning we departed, the receptionist paid little or no attention and eventualy said she would let the Manager know and we have heard nothing since.
Good to get in doors out of the cold weather over the bank holiday weekend Parking abit far from entance
was on the way
there was no protection on the windows, anybody could have climbed in through it.
Local to motorway network .good services at the service location Could do with covered walkway from service station especially in bad weather
The reception staff. Nothing
We found the room to be very clean and the staff to be cheerful and helpful. Overall a friendly atmosphere.
Small and friendly with very high standards, good food, clean rooms, situated in a pretty rural area. The only problem seems to be finding the Crown & Garter, although satnav probably solves this one.
Fantastic food, host was very attentive nothing to much trouble None
Quiet location, comfortable rooms, great food! No fan in the room - it was very hot outside & the room could have benefited from an electric fan.
Breakfast was a bit meagre
Attentiveness of the manager. Grouting in bathroom showed some mould and shower was erratic.
Friendly staff, comfortable room, good choice of beers and great breakfast.
Very friendly and homely hotel with good food and bags of character in an appealing location. Approach to rear car park was in poor repair.
The whole experience was excellent. Helpful staff, good breakfast service and drinks at fairly reasonable prices. Previous comments on the website said the rear car park was difficult to locate, but we found it quickly and it was after dark. No problems.
courtesy & efficiency of staff. Hotel has recently been refurbished to a high standard and was maintained to high standard of cleanliness no
Conveniently located, good parking and friendly/cosy internal ambiance. Room reasonably clean and comfortable. Poor continental breakfast selection and very slow service for cooked breakfast. None of two tv remotes in room worked and neither did the third provided by reception. Morning newspaper not delivered to room.
My room did not have a "stand up" shower but relied upon an attachnent to the bath taps. Unfortunately there was no way of hanging the shower head from the wall and there was no shower curtain.
The relaxing atmosphere and facilities, I booked the half board which was excellent value. The menu choice for dinner, food and service was excellent.
clean & tidy, food was good, bed was comfortable and was a good size Bedroom was to hot , could not turn down heated towel rail ,was over powering also lighting was to dim
It was exceptionally easy from beginning to end with regards to the booking and the room which was perfect - the massive clean white towels, dressing gown and sheets are exactly what we needed after a days cycling The service at breakfast was shoddy, to be polite, we literally had to ask for everything - when I checked in I was asked what newspaper I would like the next morning, which was a nice surprise, but then to have to ask for it and it not having been ordered took the shine off, but the staff were friendly and accomodating - just a incompetent, however we had a genuinely great time.
Friendly staff and nice clean hotel offering value for money Very poor breakfast, probably the porrest in over 30 years of travelling. Croissants/pastries were badly burned underneath and barely cooked on top; not risen I suggest due to cooking method. Crockery on our table was dirty as were the cereal bowls on the buffet table. That said I did see cooked breakfast being delivered to a table which looked a lot better than the croissants/pastries.
Very well positioned hotel in a lovely town setting.Canal close by for a lovely evening walk.Very handy for visiting Salisbury and Stonehenge. Full english breakfast was an extra £5 as it was not included in the initial cost....so, although still well worth it I feel this could have been included in the overal cost stated.
Stayed one night whilst cycling the Kennet and Avon Canal. All of the staff were great and struck exactly thr right note between friendly but professiona. Food was excellent and a secure place was provided overnight for the bikes.
