the location and comfort staff did not have much idea of local facillities
staff very helfpul and polite very soft pillows
rooms were very spacious and comfortable. Hotel was immaculate. exceptional value for money
Spacious and immaculate room. The staff could've been a little more forthcoming.
decoration and helpful staff very slow room service
The quiet area in which the hotel is situated. Also local to the function we were attending.
The location was close to Newbury Races and polite and friendly staff. We requested the deluxe package but this was not in our room when we arrived and we had to request it. It also said mens magazines and a newspapers would be provided but we only got female magazines and we did not get the white company products it states we would receive either so not overly impressed! The room was also extremely hot.
Air conditioning in public areas which were airy and spacious. Hot bedroom. Reservation staff did not allocate room as per booking ie requested quiet twin bedded room and originally were given double but even the twin bedded room was over an evening wedding party.
The weather The appalling staff
room size room needed decorating
Location. Airco in the bedrooms.I Would stay in this hotel again only if I could get a good rate from booking.com Restaurant closed with no advance notice. Choice of bar snack or barbecue. Breakfast very expensive. Bathroom shoiung signing of water damage from bathroom above.
Ease of use Paying for the car parking
Nothing It was dirty. Mold in the first room. Second room also dirty. Hotel requires an overall improvement. It lets down the Hilton name. Other's staying at the hotel were on rates much, much better than that offered by Booking.com. I shall not be using Bokking .com service again.
The room I booked on booking.com was not available on arrival at the hotel. Needless to say I was not impressed. It cost me an extra £20 as the only other available room was a deluxe.
Proximity to Newbury and motorway an advantage The fact that you have to pay for car parking despite price of rooms. The shower was not what you would expect at a Hilton hotel - either boiling hot suddenly or freezing cold.
Extremely convenient for dining at the nearbyand superb "Crab at Chieveley" and for going on to Blenheim Palace the following morning.
Me and my husband stayed at the Hilton North for 2 nights for the Newbury racing. I could not fault anything. The staff were so friendly and so helpful. I would definitely come back and recommend to others. The price of food on the menu was rather expensive. So unfortunatley we did not eat there.
Its a hilton its a hilton
It was convenient for our journey. Quick check in and out. Good value for money
Check in was slow
I was really very pleasantly surprised to find my room so comfortable and welcoming, and the restaurant menu so inviting. I'd certainly come again. Its location isn't perfect for north of Newbury meetings but ok if you factor in the distance.
breakfast, bathroom, flat screen tv annex room vey small, road noise
Teh ambience of the rooms was nice, the meals were fantastic though a little pricy.
The Welcome It would have been helpful if the e-mail confirming my booking had specific directions as to how to find the hotel - the point to leave the A34 - then the detailed directions
Comfortable bed The room was very small and you had to squeeze round the edge of the bed to get to the other side. No chairs to put your clothes on at all, hence on the floor overnight and stained towels and bathmat. Overall clean though.
One of the staff kept saying 'no problem' when more appropriate responses would be 'very good' or 'you're welcome'
Food was excellent, staff all very nice, the bed was clean & comfortable, but the bathroom was rather cramped, I dont know how very large people, would manage, Our stay fitted the bill for us, the only complaint was the bathroom,
Friendliness of the staff and their ability to adapt to changing arrival time due to delays on motorway. They could not do enough. The room was comfortable and very quite despite being near a major road. Poor breakfast choice and had to pay extra for cooked english breakfast. Then the scrambled eggs where grey and luke warm...not nice!! This detracted from an otherwise very enjoyable stay.
The quality of the room Didnt appear on the satnav and apparently it is a common problem according to the staff
Fairly standard hotel room but the hotel situation in Newbury would mean that I would stay there again bedroom curtain was faling off rail so I could not close it.
Location was excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful No lunch available, bar limited, rooms though clean and comfy, in need of a refurb.
comfortable, friendly and quiet. receptionist was excellent - suggesting she booked a cab for us the night before the race meeting. yes it's a little tired looking but it was clean and comfortable and there was nothing to put us off. great location and good value for the room. would stay there again. breakfast v expensive so didn't bother with that.
Food Room tatty for price, particularly bathroom (bed comfortable though)
The breakfast was great value for money and delicious. On the doorstep for shopping and nightlife. The heating must have been full on as it was so hot!!
Large car park. Close to centre of Newbury. Warm room on ground floor of annex. Fairly quiet (though not many guests staying at the time). Relaxed atmosphere. 12pm check-out. TV able to receive only four channels: BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 5 (Room 304). Don't try to approach hotel through the centre of town because this is mainly pedestrianised.
Its location is excellent as its very close to shops and restaurants on the high street. Its also close to the race track just a short drive away. Our room was very good 4 poster bed and large bathroom.
We needed lots of ice on Sunday to keep our drinks cool and the hotel staff kindly provided us with plenty. This made our day out even better. A big thank you to the hotel.
Friendlimess of staff , clean 'fluffy'' towel Resteraunt Prices Needs some redocorating in 'public' areas
Staff was helpful and the room was very comfortable...great room 110!! We liked it so much we booked an extra night. Close to everything downtown in Newbury. Good restaurants nearby! The bed was very good in this room. Did not always answer the phone. Hallways were a bit threadbare but the room was great...and that is what really counts!!
The modern rooms and spa. Food prices are high and the quality does not match especially in the bar. Reception, bar and dining room look dated, we didn't like the faux antique look in these areas.
In particular Spa and Restaurant Some of the staff though pleasant and polite had a surprisingly poor level of english. This led to a couple of misunderstandings.
The staff in the Spa were very helpfull, and the food was excellent
we liked the bathroom and big bath. room was spacious golf course view is actually right outside thw window. too close.
The spa and comfortable room made an extremly relaxing stay.
Good location, comfortable, functional room. We wanted to extend check out time by half an hour so we could use the Spa - this was not accepted and was told we would be charged. A little inflexible I thought considerig the cost of the room. Depsite the brochure talking of a mini bar - there was no mini bar. The steam room in the Spa was broken which was disappointing.
Comfortable rooms Useless, slow and unreliable internet and they did not really seem to care I think these hotels need to realise that the internet is no longer a nice to have but with on demand SaaS business applications its a necessity.
Spa facilities excellent, as was decoration. Dinner started at 7 pm and by that time my young daughter had faded. Would use the Spa lounge to eat earlier next time. Dinner was quite expensive.
Very helpful receptionist and bar staff
The location of the hotel is very good, nice quiet situation and no noise overnight. The restaurant prices were very high, consequently we didn't have dinner there.
Staff were very pleasant and helpful - excellent value for money - good location - facilities good. lounge area was too small and could have had more arm chairs seating
The restaurant is superb and the staff are great. Carrying a suitcase up and down the staircases and through fire doors is a bit tedious (but only has to be done once in each direction).
The staff were excellent . Although we didn't eat there the menus were good / great value . Beds were comfy . No extra pillows . No slip mat in bath .
The Restaurant experience was superb (both food and service). Staff in the restaurant were cheerful, professional and friendly. Hotel itself appeared in need of some redecoration. Hotel bar not open. Hotel staff not up to same level as Restaurant staff.
Quality of the room, Food was fantastic! They let themselves down, on very basic maintainance. High quality hotel, with loose toilet seat, and damaged blind.
room size and layout. River Bar was fab - wish we'd had the opportunity to eat there but we had pre-arranged plans in the evening
When we arrived they said that I called to cancel one of the rooms - I had not. At first we were told that there was not a room for us and would have to find an alternative hotel. After explaining I had a meeting at midnight with others staying at the hotel they managed to find us a room.
Very nice setting In need of renovation , worn carpets on stairs, a very tired looking hotel.
The room was very comfortable and location exceptional On a cold week the heating was insufficient and the hot water system took several minutes before producing hot water
very peaceful setting. Quiet spacious room.
Room service food was great, their kitchen is first class.
The staff were very friendly and it was a definate 5* hotel
I stayed during a business trip having got a £99 rate from Booking.com (versus the usual £309 rack rate). The hotel isn't really a business hotel - WiFi is extra and cellphone reception on at least O2 and Orange vitually non-existent. Breakfast is £15 extra (or £20 if you want a hot dish). Dinner is not within a low business budget - however ... Its a great hotel! The spa is especially relaxing (though the pool is not designed for laps - being circular). Food is fantastic. Rooms are very large and comfortable.
Ambiance and quality of this hotel
High thread-count bedsheets, great food and service. Plenty of art & sculpture about the place. Superb wine list. More attention should be paid to the quality of espresso coffee. Room decor could perhaps be more adventurous.
The whole experience of staying in this hotel was fantastic. In particular the restaurant was well worth the visit and a great experience for food lovers!
We stayed in one of the Suites. It was very comfortable, spacious and well appointed. However this is exactly what one expects for the price and was well up to our expectations.
A top class hotel with very good facilities
The hotel and its facilities were excellent, yes dining was expensive but for a special occasion it would be difficult to beat. Thought the cooked breakfast was very overpriced
The staff were attentive but unobtrusive
the room was very warm and large not enough lighting down the drive and not even on at all two nights out of three. a morning newspaper to order would be nice
We used the hotel for an overnight stay. We went to the Watermill Theatre and enjoyed awalk around the grounds of the hotel.
Character building in lovely setting close to M40 Needed handyman to repair minor items eg difficult to flush the toilet
There was none well maybe the grounds were good The whole experience was grotty and my parents did not spend the night having requested disabled access I know this could not be promised but to put someone requesting disabled access on the 5th floor with no lift is a bit off. They made it to the room which was unkempt,
the location was lovely - although difficult to find Was surprised that the bar and restaurent were not furnished in a way that reflected the rest of the hotel .
Good value. Great facilities. Room was extremely hot. Because of that one failing I wouldn't stay here again. Really a shame.
Very comfortable bed and excellent bathroom with great water pressure in the shower Had only booked to stay for 2 nights and would have liked to have stayed longer.
The setting and the surroundings were stunning and the property itself had interesting period features The room didnt have any information abuot the hotel or restaurant, lack personal touches, the room was very bare, could have done with some flowers/decoration as it lacked charm- the room could be more beautiful. The hotel also looked a bit worn, it was the little touches that need looking over such as door handles and paint. It seems that more attention is paid to golfers than hotel residents
it was a very pleasant surprise to find such a lovely setting - the hotel is also a golf and country club
Food was first class Toilet very poor
The food was very good The room was a little small and shabby
Had a great weekend at this hotel with the views of the countryside. The staff were friendly and helpful. The pool could be bigger as its shape is difficult to swim in.
Free Internet Access
Cleanliness, good thick curtains, kept out the early A.M. sun Bathroom a bit 1980s
Its location in the countryside with excellent walks
The room Shortage of staff due to a wedding
The staff were helpful Tv facilities did not work, as I was traveling by myself this was important to relieve boredom
freindly helpful staff poor choice on room service menu, room service not value for money
comfort and facilities.not far from our final destinastion southamptom everything fine .have stayed here before on a few occations
The location Lack of dining facilities for residents when functions are taking place. The terrible noise from the event disco under our room especially as we had paid for an executive upgrade.
poached eggs were brilliant the bed was awful
Very warm and friendly staff. Excellent food
Friendly Staff - excellent food and beer - easy check in and check out
Really nice hotel, clean easy to find and excellent garden area No 24 hour reception,
It was comfortable with a good full english breakfast.
good freindly staff, good good
Being able to bring the dog and having hot chocolate in the room. Able to take dog into bar whilst having evening meal but nowhere to take him whilst having breakfast.Bar very small and not conducive to sitting and chatting.
The hotel,Staff and food very good The room was only just adequate and would not liked to stay in the accomodation more than one night Very basic. However it was inexpensive
The hotel had a lot of character
Good breakfast. Free Wi-Fi internet, which I need necessarily to my work, did not work at all. I was very upset.
Very friendly staff. Excellent food. Comfortable and quiet room. None
None Dirty, Nothing worked, could not have a shower, because wall fixing broken. Carpet in bathroom (Who has carpet in bathroom)? Worn and smelly. Cobwebs hanging from light fittings.
Good value;good food;friendly staff;comfortable rooms.
Friendly Staff, Good Selection of food No shower in the room and a lack of hot water for the bath, so on 4 out of 7 mornings I had to have a cold bath, bed was slightly uncomfortable, poor tv reception
Food was excellent, staff were friendly and efficient Rooms were adequate but no hiardryer, bin or glasses in bathroom. Carpet on the stairs was worn in places.
Staff friendly and helpful All areas such as stairwell, corridor, car park etc were scruffy and unkempt. The room whilst adequate was in need of a complete makeover.
Pleasant stay First floor mid corridor needs airing due to cooking smells from kitchen below. Better light blocking curtains/blinds over window (Rm 6) needed. Passing cars light the room up!
Good evening meals
Very Noisy Heating System, Also to hot in room
The helpfulness of the staff, the comfort of the rooms, the atmosphere of the hotel,my childhood dream of staying at the Bear was realised. The lack of water in the bathroom the morning of our departure due to a power outage, pumps could not function and upstairs rooms were without water, a generator would have been a solution to this problem. Breakfast prices were very high.
I was made very welcome by the staff. I found the hotel to be up-to-date without losing that essential 'Englishness' of an old building, wherein lies its charm. One had to get used to being housed in the old coaching stables which meant having to go outside in order to get to the main hotel facilities like the bar and dining room etc.
lovely location, attractive modern decor, had a nice quality feel to the hotel You would not get fat on the portion sizes for dinner. Some of the tables in the bar are at the wrong height for the seating, which made eating at the table rather awkward. The designer has unfortunately chosen a beige toned carpet throughout much of the hotel, which whilst it looks fairly new, already looked in need of a deep clean, which was a shame, as the decor was generally very nice.
Very high standard of Suite Rooms; tastefully decorated; comfortable bed and excellent size bathroom & shower; good bar area. Experience somewhat let down by poor receptionist. Dour demeanour, said very little and generally not what a hotel wants to give as its first impression/contact with guest
Lovely location. River meandering along the back of the property was a great soundtrack.
We had a large room that was very comfortable and clean. We found the experience relaxing and the staff friendly. No
My room was very comfortable and overlooked a babbling brook which was really lovely I would love to go back in the summer The complimentary drinks were basic a hot chocolate drink and a variety of teas as well as a biscuit would have been very welcome
The degree of cleaniness may be questionable given the open half bottle of water we found in the room.
