Baladin Zanzibar Beach Hotel - Pingwe - Building

9.6 Excellent (385 reviews)
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Amazing stay! Somehow wild but very clean, modern and beautiful. Its very relaxing and peaceful resort with only 12 accommodations. An oasis of relaxation with multiple features for sunbathing surrounded by tropical landscape. The staff was incredibly friendly. The location is fantastic if you are looking for something more quiet, not so busy or windy as other beaches in Zanzibar. The beach is almost perfect, only the tides and sea hedgehogs could mess your swiming in the ocean, but the host provides you swimming shoes against sea hedgehogs on request. Just a few hundred meters walking distance from the famous landmark "The Rock" (by the way, the restaurant hosted on the rock does not stand up to the claims of reputation: not a great food, more Italian style than local, and very expensive for Zanzibar). Pingwe beach offers several other alternatives for great food and activities. Locals and beach boys are friendly and not aggressive like other parts.
Cons: There are a few things about I would say negatives or rather would be suggestions for improvement, but overall I could not give feedback with a score too low under 10. First, the arranged transfer from the airport: the driver arrived a little late and our flight landed earlier and we had to wait outside the airport for about 20 minutes being harassed by other taxis. (a professional transfer follows "flightradar" or other applications if you arrive sooner or later). Also the car and the driver wasn't very pleasant according with the baladin brand. For return we chose a local driver with a better car well-maintained and cleaner, with $ 10 cheaper. WiFi was little bit weak but maybe the local internet is the reason. Unfortunately, the pool bar was out of use, you have to order only to the main restaurant, and the only beer available was the house-beer Baladin which is an italian craft beer. It was good, but not necessarily my taste. I would have preferred to diversify the menu with a few local and international selections. Yoga classes were also unavailable, instead, I would recommend to add some gym equipment. I would recommend to the hosts to add mosquito lamps or torches in the open-air bathrooms for the evenings. by the way, you need to know the the bungalows do not have air conditioning, but for us, in mid-June it was not necessary.

Pros: Loved the furnishings around the resort and the bungalows were well thought out, comfortable and classy. The Staff were all amazing so friendly and thoughtful, nothing was too much bother to them.
Cons: Absolutely nothing

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is well located on the Eastern side of Zanzibar island, with great snorkeling and diving spots close by. The snorkeling was the best that I have ever done - never seen that many fish in the waters. The food is also phenomenal. We ate every one of our meals there. All of the staff is super helpful and made the whole experience seamless, including arranging for a taxi from and to the airport.

Pros: Tastefully decorated. INCREDIBLE breakfast. Super friendly staff. Great massage. Reasonable prices. Very private beach. Excellent pool. Plenty of beach front lounge options! Felt incredibly welcomed
Cons: Nothing. Superb stay.

9.3 Excellent
Pros: Staff on arrival were very welcoming and during our stay Lisa and Noah kept ensuring we were okay with everything and asked us if we needed advice about where to go etc. The pool was of a good size and cleaned daily and the rooms were cleaned twice a day with a special bug spray used in the evening so we barely got bitten by mosquitos which was a plus! Bungalow rooms were of a good size too. The hotel has a limited number of rooms which for us was ideal as there were less guests at a time so felt more private for a resort. The view of the beach was beautiful in the morning with the sunrise. Overall, the unique aspect of this stay is that the staff will really put there heart and soul into ensuring that the guests that stay here have a memorable time and they are very fast at responding to requests which you do not see often in other hotels and resorts.
Cons: The breakfast options are fine for the first couple days but because it is quite limited you do get kinda sick of having to eat the same breakfast everyday. The beach was not as nice as I was expecting as there is a lot of seaweed on the seashore which is actually seen in a lot of places across Zanzibar. Therefore, if you are the sort of person that has to have the perfect beach then maybe this is not the place for you. But the beach just 10 mins drive away at Michamvi beach is actually stunning (personally even better than Nungwi as it is less crowded and it has the white sand and bright blue waters you expect to see in Zanzibar). Location can be looked at as either good or bad. Good for some as it is a quiet area to stay in so it is very peaceful during the day or to some it might be bad as it is not in a busy area where there are restaurants and shops and water activities etc. that you would expect at Kendwa beach/Nungwi beach.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The location it excellent, right ON the beach. It s a family run business, with a touch of privacy. Extremelly clean(twice a day), breakfast is fresh, fruit/juice to enjoy by the pool, kitchen is a mix of traditional and international, sunbeds and wiews incredible, better than the picture. The owner is a man of Honour- V, we appreciate your involvement. PS: always put your belongings in the safe box. From arrival on day 1!
Cons: The bungalow was a bit dark due to the local design.
7.5 Good
Pros: Amazing staff, Noah was always friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and just like the photos.
Cons: Our sea view room did not have a 100% sea view so the hotel changed us to another room (villa 5) but it was still partially covered by a roof. I was quite disappointed about this.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location! It is right on the beach very quiet part of the island! We enjoyed our time and we can’t thank the staff enough for being so wonderful and hospitable! We had to leave early in the morning for a flight Lisa woke up at 4 am to make sure we are up and brought delicious breakfast with everything we asked for especially for us! She and the wonderful crew had made the vacation feel like home. Highly recommended!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I recommend is a great place. The atmosphere of this place is amazing. We felt at home there, very cozy and relaxing place. Very exquisite dishes served by great waiters. The beach at low tide is wide and beautiful. Very safe place, during the night very well guarded by protection. The beach bungalow is an amazing place with a beautiful view. Apartment Suite spacious and huge with a beautiful view of the sea and the pool. We'll be back for sure. We took our best memories from there.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Staff is really kind, food was good in comparison to the area.
Cons: Wifi can be faster but i guess it is limitations related to the Island. Showers were not hot enough during the night, but were enough.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The best! Fresh fruit and fresh juice, new great taste every day.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Fabulous breakfast, with included special orders for your eggs and coffee.
Cons: Internet connection was well below 1 mbit at all times, so no streaming possible. But enough to lookup on google. We actually found it useful to be off-line, as it brought us more together over talks and games.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Everything was absolutely amazing ! From the warm welcome at the very beginning of our stay, to the beautiful attentions for our honey moon! It was absolutely incredible and I highly recommend this hotel.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Best thing about this place was the see view from your room in the morning, this was unbeatable!
Cons: The personnel is quite friendly, but we still felt a bit awkward that we asked couple of times for our room key and only when insisting, we found out that there is no key for us at all, that the previous guest took it. On the question don't you have like a spare key, they answered that this was also taken some time ago by another guest. We understand that this situations can happen, but that is what the double key is for: when you lose one, you make another one on the spot, because otherwise you'll eventually end up losing both of your keys :) Otherwise, it's a nice place for couple of days.

Pros: The peace and quiet of the Hotel and Beach was exactly what we were hoping for. The Staff, from Management down to the guys keeping the gardens neat and tidy, were quite honestly fantastic. Pros: The hotel is really amazing! So beautiful, and peaceful! The staff is very polite and kind! They think in every detail to make your stay special!!I I had a great experience at Matlai! The best boutique hotel I had stayed!!!! I had just come back, and I already miss it!
Cons: The food is a bit spicy. For me, It was ok! I like food full of spices, but my husband and the couple that traveled with us had found it too spicy and hot!! The breakfast juice was made of fruits we are not used to drink! I would like a to had a passionfruit juice, pineapple juice! Something more commun... however, these were little details, the whole trip was incredible!!!

Pros: The location is amazing and the facilities are immaculately maintained. The decor looks antique and rustic giving it a unique old school flavor. The staff are very attentive and friendly, catering to all our needs.

Pros: Great location mid way down the beach, felt secluded in an amazing tropical garden on the beach with incredible sunrise beach view. Their team was amazing from the beach security guard to the butler. Everyone was always helpful and eager to get whatever we needed. The mobile phone they gave us was great to call the butler to order meals or drinks even when away from the resort. Great small boutique style resort with impeccable service perfect for romantic couple or group. Highly recommend

9.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff is very good, even the ones that where learning because we came during the low season. The accommodation is amazing, everything very modern but with local decoration and very good taste. European power plugs, adapters on hand, good air conditioning, Bluetooth speaker if that is your thing and the areas are very big. The infinity pool is also about 25m long. Snorkeling equipment and kayak on hand if you want to use them.
Cons: The food at lunch is limited and very simple. The wifi doesn't reach the room (castaway) or is very week there, although when you have a signal it's good even for video. The beach is very nice for a long walk but keep in mind it's not very good for having a dive since it's full of rocks and the low tied makes the water go back hundreds of meters. You do have a very nice beach only 1km away turning left from the beach or right on the main road.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely fantastic experience! The place is really amazing with great staff, very good food and wine list (at reasonable prices), incredible views. Only 7 villas (15-20 people max) so they have time to take care about people, you really feel like home.
Cons: Maybe improving a bit the wifi connection

Pros: Wonderful infinity pool. Amazing villa. Excellent food, never eaten so well on vacation! The whole experience was amazing. From waking up with the sound of the garden, feeling almost in a jungle, to the breathtaking views of the ocean with the low tide. The whole resort is really beautiful, as the interior design. Beyond our expectations.
Cons: I would improve breakfast, even if it was also very good.

Pros: Super Friendly staff - extreme chill out conditions. This resorts is at the end of the road thu , no traffic - no noise, Sea has a big tide so sea retracs rather far away from the beach - but thats nature. I had a lovely week.
Cons: Spending 1 week is ideal in this resort - nothing negative to mention - all fine.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is not just an hotel and for who can understands what's really behind it, it's pure PARADISE on earth ... The resort is first at human size, it's a boutique hotel with a few rooms and as much staff members as Guests... offering then an outstanding and clean service. The personnel is very friendly, people smille all the time ... most of the waiters work here for long some 6- 8 or even 10 years long .. The hotel is a kind of social project, each staff member counts, is important, and the direction carres about helping employees to catch up higher standards (trainees, english courses etc .. ). It also sustains the village´s local life by employing staff as much as they can (3 of 10) and giving them enough off days . It creates a network of villagers that build up their own business to supply foods and goods to the kitchen, and finally it supports local artists painters and village school. The direction and management have a vision of what they want to do in Zanzibar it is not disconnected from Africa and everything makes sense. It's a family hotel with human size where you feel at home, so not poshy and bling bling so people missing tv and minibar in the bedromm better book somewhere else... Finally, the location is just amazing it's the most beautifull beach that you can imagine .. white sand coconut, palmtrees .. it is a private beach where you will feel alone, protected from wind (that we have experienced in other beaches) and where local people come at sunset for football and relaxing. No one comes to try to sell you something and to harass you .. this because the hotel entertain an excellent relation with the village just behind... Every night the staff make huge efforts to install the dining place on a different location, (garden, pool with live quite music, or on the beach with fires and a great Swahili buffet. The bar is located at the beach and you can enjoy there the most amazing sunsets ever ...
Cons: Rien
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location for those who appreciate white sand, beautiful beach, awasome sunsets... it is a magical location. We stayed for 4 wonderful nights, each night different dinner theme... breakfast literally on the beach, ... the bar is wonderfuly setup to enjoy the Ocean's breeze and to contemplate the mesmirizing sunset while sipping on a magical cocktail or mocktail... Our room was sea facing and it was just great waking up to the amazing view of green ocean quiet wavelets... Very friendly management and staff.. In a nutshell, Michamvi Sunset Bay was an amazing experience!
Cons: Being a late riser I would have loved breakfast to be extended till 11:30 AM, but I understand the staff need to prepare the lunch menus etc.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff was very friendly and approachable. No request was too much. Everyone was always greeted with a friendly "jambo". The rooms were clean and have a view to the beach. There is no TV which really is not needed. Internet access is available on the whole property even on the beach. The food is excellent and the selection as well as location changes every day. Management asks every evening if there is anything else they can do to make the stay even more enjoyable.
Cons: We were lucky as the property was almost empty and as we booked outside the main season. It takes a while to get there from the airport but if you're looking for a quiet place, this is the place to be.
7.5 Good
Pros: good value for money, beautiful isolated beach
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The property is very beautiful The service, staff and management are amazing and very helpful people they’ll do their best to keep you happy!
Cons: Water in the washroom wasn’t always available not sure if that’s something with the hotel or the area in general
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff and whole feel of the hotel was brilliant right from the moment you arrived. Managers along with staff got to know us on first name terms and within just a few hours felt like home.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was amazing. The activities and tours organized by the management. All the guides were professional and the hotel staff were great, helpful with always a smile on their face. The local people around were friendly and polite. The hotel setting was paradise. Most of the guests in the 20 rooms were adults seeking relaxation and serenity. We were more than satisfied felt like guests rather than clients. It exceeded my expectations. Would strongly recommend it.
Cons: Nothing

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Location was super nice, perfect place to relax, the beach just 150m away and then all free to walk - especially nice for the sundown. We liked the different plants and trees in the compound and you'll always find a new place to be "yours" for breakfast or dinner (the big swings are awesome!) Bungalows are cosy and clean and offer enough privacy. Staff is very friendly and helpful (special thanks to Anna!) and you can also book different activities with them. Breakfast is tasty and fresh with lots of fruits and fresh juice.
Cons: Dinner was very tasty, just a little bit high-priced
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The place is very cosy and green. There a a lot places to relax during the hot time of the day. The Bungalows are beautiful, cosy and fit well in the surrounding. The staff is very friendly, kind all made our stay wonderful. The breakfast is simple but a good start in the day. The restaurant is good and the prices more then fair.
Cons: A place for the towels in the bathroom would be nice.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Helpful and kind hosts, originality/style of the place, drinks and food
Cons: Problems of water supply
4.3 Okay
Pros: nature, lemurs (we put a mango on the balcony and he came to eat), setting.
Cons: the breakfasts are very weak (we were in other hotels for about this price, there is something to compare with), the staff is not at all friendly !!!! We saw a rat on a tree near our house, and in a cockroach house the size of a finger!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful natural environment. The garden and communal areas were beautifully kept by staff. The rooms were unique and compact taking you back to basics. Each bungalow was well situated in the compound so you have some privacy. A busy popular place. The compound furniture was all wood string hammocks and an array of cultural fabrics. The staff were great always helpful and very friendly. Nothing was too much for them. Hakuna Matata
Cons: Some people may wish rooms cleaned each day but it was great for us.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Hands down the nicest place I stayed in my two weeks. Loveliest, friendliest people. Booked for 4 days. Stayed for 8!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Awesome location, cool and friendly staff, really nice breakfast and meals.
Cons: Could have been nearly a 10/10 if the room would have been a bit more clean (particularly the shower) and if the beds would have been longer, I'm 183cm (6feet) tall and I had to sleep diagonally in the double bed.
7.5 Good
Pros: If you are looking for a not expensive accomodation, near the beach, with no sea view - that's your spot! Very uncomplicated and relaxed. The 'waitesses' are super friendly. The chefs and the food are good.
Cons: The rooms are small and it is VERY VERY hot inside - the fan is not enough to cool you down at night. In our room it did't work well. We stayed there for five nights and our room never was cleaned. Expect at least one night of loud music - depending on the room you get, you might be involved in the "party". I do not recommend this house for women travelling alone.
6.3 Good
Pros: The setting was very lovely with all the details, candle light and a fire place in the evenings. The beach was only a brief walk away!
Cons: The breakfast was very basic, when the bar manager was gone, no service at all. Two very sick and filthy dogs were always on the premises and on the seating areas.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very kind staff, we have been taken care of very well without being 'overjambo-ed'. Beautiful spot, nice bungalows, easy access to the beach - we were very happy

Pros: Just after a few days the place started to feel like home. Chichi and his sister made us a delicious breakfast every morning - probably the best breakfast in zanzibar. We also got some delicious home cooked food the evening. The beach is stunning, especially at sunset. It’s only a short walk away from the property, less than 100m. We loved how spacious and peaceful Barefoot was. We will definitely be back, and recommend this place to anyone visiting Zanzibar.

Pros: What a gem! We had a lovely stay at Barefoot. Nice rooms and standard. Very nice garden with places to relax and exercise if you'd like. Great food and breakfast, Gloria makes the best pancakes along with fresh fruits. Don't forget to ask for her great Chips Mayay for lunch! We had amazing BBQ in the evenings, both fish and squid. Best food on the trip by far! A tips! We went to the nearby hotel one day during low tide. Eat or drink for 10 dollars and you can use their pool which was lovely during a really hot day!

Pros: A little paradise on the beach. In the garden all stones and plants are on place. The food is amazing, especially the prawn curry. The beer is cold. The staff is very friendly, Mohammed is very professional. A lot of good places in the near and The Rock restaurant. Less beach boys on the beach, who sell, some kids with shells and some masais, but it is ok.
Cons: Open bathroom.

Pros: Everything! Many different possibilities. Very clean!

Pros: This place is just heaven on earth. I loved the small bungalow. The service was perfect the team is absolutely wonderful. If you want to just rest and enjoy the sound of the waves. This is were you have to go!!! Breakfast was a delight : eggs, fresh fruits, ... lots of options available for everyone for breakfast. I was there to spend some quiet time and it was over my expectations. The location is literally on the beach and you can walk by and meet people.
Cons: I didn’t like the fact that I had to leave this paradise. ;(

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely bungalows, very quiet location, great little restaurant featuring several Indian dishes. Lovely staff. Nice to face the sunset. The resort is located at the furthest point from the village so it is a bit of a drive to get anywhere, which is fine if you want seclusion.
Cons: The beach tends to be covered in seaweed when the tide goes out, so not terribly picturesque. The eastern-facing beaches didn't seem to have this problem.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: position of the hotel is great, everything is brand new in the rooms and common spaces; Sandra and the management are very nice and professional
Cons: restaurant management is not at the same level of other services (good food and very nice waiters but general organisation is not that good)
7.5 Good
Pros: Good Zanzibar 4-star (which is world 3-star). We liked the bar area, dinner location on the sea and the proximity to good snorkelling, which is just a short drive and boat trip away. Access to SUPs, kayaks, pedalos and wind surfing. Rooms were good, but beds a bit hard and water pressure not great. The pool was nice, beach /sea swimmable and staff very eager to please. Food was good - nice curries. We recommend staying here for 2 or 3 days and then visiting other parts of the island as you may get a bit bored staying here for your entire trip.
Cons: Some small attention to detail in service and room set up is not quite there yet. But it’s good value for money.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very Nice people, good food, very relaxing athmosphere, and very good service
Cons: It would have Been Nice to have a shop in the neighborhood for buying drinks and fruits.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Mr Ninesh from the Wingit restaurant and Martin and Linda from reception were really amazing. The food and the ambience was unbeatable and I just loved the view from our room, it opened out to the ocean. Staff was very hospitable and forthcoming. Overall a very good stay.
Cons: No AC in most of the rooms due to which afternoons became very hot and stifling. Also, there was an open sewer just behind our bathrooms due to which there was a very bad smell in the room.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: A lovely set of villa's facing Michamvi beach, the facilities are new and well maintained and what you see on the description is what you get. The place is really quiet and soothing and is perfect for couples and families as well. The restaurant in the hotel offers an acceptable variety of local and Indian food and good seafood too. The staff were very helpful and available, making sure that your stay is pleasant, room service was timely and made sure every night that the mosquito insecticides and net were ready, pickups and drivers are always available and the place is very secure. There's also an activities section that could arrange all the sea activities that you need and it was amazingly excellent. All were very friendly, fun and helpful, I've never met such staff who you really feel like a part of your family, such an amazing set of people, special thanks to Shafiq, Martin & Baraka who were very professional, nice and made a very positive impact on our stay in this amazing Hotel, there's no doubt that we'll be visiting this place again.
Cons: Nothing to dislike, the description of the hotel shows you everything as it is, you may find it a bit far when you drive there from the airport but that's the whole idea of a getaway place.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Amazing service and staff attention to personal needs. Was my father's sixtieth birthday and they made an amazing arrangement. Food is really good and Nimesh took excellent care of us.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: I really enjoyed my stay. - The spot is beautiful with amazing sunset views over the bay. Water is crystal clear and in full moon high tides the sea turns into a huge pool. Really pleasant! - They offered us a kayak trip for free during Easter holidays. It was amazing to explore the mangrove during sunset. It's also a nice walk into the mangrove in low tide. Such beautiful ecosystem. - Restaurant was quite good and not abusive prices. - Staff was really pleasant and helpful.
Cons: Things mentioned below could be improved but I had a really great stay overall: - Sea facing glasses were dirty already when we got there and were never cleaned during our 3 night stay. A pity as it considerably reduced our views from the room. - The last evening no one came to bug spray the room and prepare the mosquito net and etc. - The chairs in common areas were all turned upside down during the 3 days which kind of increased the "low season atmosphere". - A sign in the street would help people get there more easily. - I wouldn't mind using the same bath towels for 3 days. Normally if guests don't put it on the floor they don't need to be changed. Just a tip for reducing environmental impact. - There should be big water gallons in the common area so people can drink it in a glass. Many hotels in Zanzibar already do that in order to reduce plastic pollution.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Staff and facilities were amazing. Our stay was very good, rooms were clean and peace was a 1 minute walk. Martin was a stand out member of staff!!
Cons: Alittle hard to find but everyone locally helps and people are friendly.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I think I’ve been to almost every Zanzibar hotel page on booking, But Kikoi’s page caught my eye and heart and I decided that this was the one. I was a bit concerned about the seclusion of the area, being far of major attractions on the island that I heard about in advance, but when I arrived I found the most perfect beach, with the perfect team, on a beautiful spot of the island, surrounded by beautiful nature and warm welcoming villages. Going to look for starfish in the low tide on the beautiful lagoon just south to the hotel is highly recommended, Just in front of the also recommended Mangrove Sunset beach bar. The hotel is very clean, the private pools are romantic and also a great place to finish the day in. Being able to watch the sunset on the beach in also a great benefit only few hotels in Zanzibar can offer. Nimesh will take great care of you and make sure you have what you like to eat even if its not on the menu (we are vegetarian).. We stayed 7 nights.. wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else and would love to have stayed more.
Cons: The internet could be a bit better, but still not bad, just slow sometimes.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Very nice hotel design, beach and rooms. Excellent food. Nice personal. Ressort is very clean.
Cons: There is not much you can do outside of the hotel, sea is not great for swimming or snorkeling, noise from near-by construction, super expensive transfers and laundry. Cocktails are not great.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: It was far from the airport, around 1hr 20 mins. HOWEVER, well worth it when you get there. The Rock nearby, approximately $10USD each way in a cab not the quoted $35. Massage facilities could improve a little, but overall lovely. The apartments were fabulous, plunge pools, 4 poster beds, properly mosquito netted. Turn down service was great. Fabulous, big shower, Massi Locals friendly and you always felt safe. Pool is amazing, beach is sensational... plenty of loungers and enough space to feel if you are there on your own. A. more finished and well put together property. Sunset is amazing, panoramic views all round. Afternoon ice teas, pancakes, and offers from the bar. Not many kids around, so completely relaxing. Stars were so clear, due to the location. Plenty of Watersport equipment and games. Feeding the monkeys was brilliant fun. somedays they will join you for breakfast!!!
Cons: Road into location a little bumpy, but it's for something to balance toe positive. Maybe the guys selling tours on the beach. a little invasive, but security meant they leave you alone mostly. Hotel offer a $ 80 rtn transfer we had a driver and they did it for $35/40 rtn. Wifi could roll in and out sometimes, but honestly you are too busy relaxing to notice.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The hotel beach is one of the best I've ever been. Fine sand, spectacular sunsets .. The friendliness of the staff always attentive (sometimes too much). The spacious, clean, perfect rooms
Cons: They should improve the meals. The breakfast buffet and dinner buffet are quite repetitive. For lunch the menu is very fair. When they want to make dinner a la carte, they take a long time to serve you the dishes.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The place to be at Zanzibar, everything was perfect, there is some monkeys in the hotel and next to the rooms, there is a beautiful beach and very nice pool. Food was very good and service was perfect. Rooms are big and you have private pool.
Cons: There is not a lot of water pressure in the bathroom when you take a shower.
7.0 Good
Pros: Perfect food for and very delicious.
Cons: No TV in pavilion rooms. Showers and mattresses need to improve . Beach is not really clean .
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: None except the friendly staff
Cons: Everything was extremely bad
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel room, grounds and the buildings themselves are spectacular. The staff are really friendly, the beach is perfect and the pool is really nice. It was also extremely quiet but that was good for what we wanted. The plunge pool is a nice touch, but it wasn't used as there were too many insects around it. The hotel room was like a little villa and very spacious with a comfortable bed - with the Wi-Fi connection also being okay for Zanzibar. We also had a TV with English channels as we had a lot of downtime due to the rain.
Cons: We stayed during the wet season and we got extremely wet one day and because it is so humid we needed to dry our clothes, we were charged $6 to dry 2 t-shirts and some shorts. I think this should be free as there were about three couples in the hotel at the time, it was not busy. The food was okay, we had some good meals and some bad meals. It would be helpful to acknowledge the got drinks at breakfast are not included as they are expensive and free in the room. The tours are expensive, just book with any other hotel close. The taxis are much cheaper if you book with a private taxi company, nearly half the price of what the hotel was going to charge.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Konokono was a fantastic end to our week in Zanzibar. We had a garden view villa which we absolutely loved and actually preferred to the beach front rooms. Villa was exceptionally spacious, beautiful linen, a living room and a private dipping pool. Our booking came with the half board option which I would highly recommend as you are really isolated and so eating out would require a bit of a hike. The food is 7 stars, we actually had to miss the free tea time at 5pm so that we would be starving to enjoy the fully spread for dinner. The hotel has free kayaks, volley ball, badminton, table tennis and one of the best beaches for swimming we had on our trip.
Cons: Wish we had stayed longer! Really nothing we could fault with this hotel. Perhaps our only feedback is the cleaning staffed changed the towels a lot during turn down and we really didn't need so many towel changes - let's save water and the planet :)
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Postcard type location, very friendly staff, great amenities with bar, ping pong, pool table and private beach which is exactly like in pictures
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location and accomodation. Service very nice although sometimes we were not as attended as we would have liked.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very friendly and helpful. The beach near the property was perfect.
5.5 Okay
Pros: Garden facilities and potentially the rooms
Cons: Rooms were not daily cleaned and some insects stayed there with all ants eating them, the mosquitos nets were super dirty. breakfast was fine- but we simply asked for butter and they said no, even if we asked the day before. Mainly, the tablecloths were dirty and full of small ants. Having lunch on a wooden table cleaned with water would have been simpler and cleaner...potentially a great place but to be better managed.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: It’s really chilled and relaxed, was a last minute plan and l was alone. The staff are very friendly, welcoming and attentive.
Cons: The pancakes are great but l don’t want them every day for breakfast
7.0 Good
Pros: It’s clean, quite and great stuff members
Cons: The area is a bit isolated.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: One of the most relaxing places I’ve ever been. Literally just beds hanging from trees, friendly staff, good music... in the evenings the guys played guitar and drums, and it’s a 2 min walk from the beach. Food was good too, and other guests were very chilled. 2 of us stayed for 4 nights, had food and (lots of) drinks every day, the total came to about $250 which is great value.
Cons: Everything about Milele Lodge was perfect, but the beach at Michamvi Kae isn’t for someone who wants to just lie on the beach all day. At low tide the sea is really far away, and we saw lots of urchins and some jellyfish. Also, everything was fine for us but some other guests had issues where rooms were double booked and the staff had to organise for them to stay elsewhere. So I’d recommend making a quick phone call/Facebook message to make sure you get the room you booked.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff were hospitable and friendly and made the lodge special
Cons: Bathroom mats and an expanded food menu would be nice
5.5 Okay
Pros: Location is excellent (2min from the beach), garden is nice to chill out and breakfast is basic but good.
Cons: Rooms are very basic, beds are terrible and it's not clean (we saw 1 cockroach in our bathroom and there were plenty of them in the shared bathroom). No AC in room, which for this price should be included. A friend of the staff offered us marijuana on our first day without us asking for it. One of the staff threw a party with two female guests the second night we stayed. As it's a small property, we were disturbed by the loud music until 2am on a weekday. Only recommended for backpackers who like to chill, smoke weed and don't bother about cleanliness.
5.8 Okay
Pros: I liked the exterior of the place.
Cons: I did not liked that the property does not provide self determined payment policy. They have announced that it is possible to pay both by visa and mastercard but when I wanted to check out they told me that they have problems and I waited 1,5 h without solution of the problem. Finally they brought transaction machine from neighboor lodge.
7.5 Good
Pros: Great communal area Very close to the beach
Cons: Food average
8.8 Excellent
Cons: The ambience is brilliant

4.3 Okay
Pros: Very kind staff
Cons: Far from everything..the beach is not good for bathing..the facilities in the hotel are in bad condition, like lamps that do not work, water that comes out of the shower and there was a water break. The pool is not clean and the food is reasonable and nothing more ...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We got a lot more than what we paid for. The staff were extremely friendly, the food were excellent. Probably one of the best hotels we ever stayed at. They made us feel like family. Well done!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Food was excellent. Staff was exceptional. Highly recommend this hotel!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The beach is gorgeous: quiet, clean, and CLOSE. Food was also nice: great octopus! Very helpful staff and relatively "intimate" hotel: only 18 rooms. We had a simple, but adequate family room and good housekeeping. The little swimming pool was also very welcome.
Cons: The room lacked additional storage space (shelves/drawers). Also the "road" to the hotel needs some attention. There isn't much in the immediate neighborhood, so taxi rides add up a bit.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Great location and friendly staff
Cons: Can improve on the food
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The location near the ocean
Cons: There was nothing I didn’t like
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing location and the staff are so accommodating and helpful, they even helped locate my lost bag with the airline and followed up 2 days after we checked out
5.0 Okay
Pros: The beach and surroundings are really nice especially as this part of the island can be quite rocky.
Cons: The rooms are basic and the bathroom is terrible. The Toilet didn’t flush properly, and the staff are not used to women of color traveling alone and were rude most of the time. I had read about the exploitative employment practices of the tourism industry in Zanzibar but the staff here were too much.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Just the Beach and the Staff
Cons: They need to look at the Infrastructure of the building and need to keep more of a variety of alcohol and staff need training on Cocktails. Also the breakfast needs to change and customers to have a choice not get the same every single day.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: The stuff was very attentive and made us feel at home. We were able to organize tours and transfers with them. The breakfast but food in general is great. It is a perfect place to relax a little of the tourist tracks. It was possible to pay by card.
Cons: The WiFi is not the fastest which seems to be inevitable on Sansibar though. It’s stable and available in every part and with this already more then we had in other places.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Very casual lay back place. Rooms were large and spacious. Food was excellent and the cheapest around. Large meals.
Cons: The surrounding area doesn't have that many things for children to do.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The accommodation is close to the beach and it offers a huge garden with a lot of possibilities to relax. The staffs are very helpful and friendly. We enjoyed our stay!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Tumu and her colleagues were very accommodating. The room was big, clean and airy (we didn't need to use the fan at all). The breakfast and the lunch/dinner were very good. The garden around the bungalows is wonderful. The ocean is amazing at high tide, the sunsets are breath-taking.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Ocho and team were extremely welcoming and catered to every our whim! Recommend the place if you want to chill in real Zanzibar.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A great place, great atmosphere. Clean rooms and a lovely garden. The owner Mpole is a great guy and the team are very nice and helpfull. I would love to re-visit.
Cons: We loved the place, we can find flaws but they are minor issues.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Super relaxing place, realy hakuna matata atmosphere, fire as the best socializing event every evening. Rooms are basic, but beds are comfo enough. Anyhow you spend a minimum of time inside the room as all the day you can enjoy amazing calm garden with swinging beds. Good cooker and reasonable prices in the restaurant.
Cons: No hangers in the room and not even one in the bathroom. But I realy think the manager will make it after having read this statement :)
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Stayed here for 6 nights and given the great reviews for this place and the very reasonable price, I was amazed that there weren't more guests staying there (maybe just because it was low season). I didn't meet the owner as he was away, but the other staff were helpful. Lovely big room with two massive double beds (very good mattresses and pillows) and a big, clean bathroom with hot water available at all times. The food was good and the manager kindly allowed me to keep some things in their fridge. The grounds are very beautiful. It is a large compound with lots of places to relax - you can sit on your veranda or choose one of the hammocks or swinging beds under a makuti shade between the many different trees and flowering shrubs. The staff kept the white sandy paths scrupulously clean and tidy and sometimes lit a fire at night. It was very quiet, totally relaxing. The beach is a very short walk away and not at all crowded. At low tide, the local people are out spear fishing or tending their seaweed farms and there are a few fishing boats. Every afternoon around 4.00 pm there were people bussed in or brought by boat from other parts of the island to watch the sunset from the "Kae Funk" bar further along the beach. You can enjoy the music if you are near to it, but can hardly hear it on other parts of the beach. The sea is clean and there is also a large mangrove forest around part of the bay. There are a few other places to stay nearby but they didn't seem to have a lot of guests that week either. Michamvi and Mpole Bungalows would be top of my list of places to return to on any future trip to Zanzibar!
Cons: I would have liked the bin in the room to be emptied every day. Otherwise, the only difficulty was in settling the bill, due to the card reader refusing my debit card. However, this was resolved by the manager sending one of the staff to accompany me to the ATM at Paje, where I was able to withdraw cash to make the payment.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect large room with small veranda overlooking an immaculate garden. Perfect. Great breakfast (lots of fruit and pancakes). Easy going, friendly staff. 30 second walk to the beach.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Mpole is a really nice and beautyfull place!! I wish i could stay longer but i already had to go because of work. The feeling is totaly relaxt! No pressure!!
Cons: The Internet wasn't working at all. It was because of a storm, they say. As far as i know are they working on it.

Pros: I liked everything about this place, best place for couples to have a quiet relaxed time. The staff was so friendly and went extra mile to arrange a quiet romantic candle light dinner for our anniversary. The Chef made sure we had different experience everyday, I am definitely coming back here very soon.

Pros: Breakfast, dinner, staff, location, resort, beach, pool
10.0 Excellent
Pros: the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. you must meet the Chef and also have a good chat with Aly. everyone else was very professional and genuinely warm and made us feel welcomed. the resort is super clean. the room was well maintained and they offer a great turn down service too. every day you get clean towels, water and coffee in your room . the A/C works perfectly and you have Wifi everywhere around the hotel . the connection is not the best but it's good enough. the overall atmosphere is great and the food is excellent . it felt like we were in a 5star restaurant. you must have a swahili night !! it was the best. we are very happy with the resort. it is a bit far away from everything but they offer shuttle to the airport and back , also they organise all kinds of tours for a good price. if you want to relax and have an amazing cocktail by the beach this is the right place to be Thank you !
Cons: We liked everything there. the resort was above our expectations

Pros: It was a fabulous place to stay very relaxing. The staff were extremely friendly, welcoming and went above and beyond to make our stay a memorable one. Beds were very comfortable.
Cons: Nothing we didn't like!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All the staff were really welcoming and accommodating. They helped us organise and book trips, the chef came out and spoke to us each evening about what we would like to eat the next day (which was particularly helpful for my friend who is vegetarian) and the general atmosphere was really friendly.

Pros: Almost everything
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. It was amazing.
Cons: No WiFi in our villa.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful location on a tranquil beach, spacious villas. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. We were upgraded to the beachfront family villa with plunge pool! Loved the beach bar vibe and gorgeous cabanas. Would definitely stay here again!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: I only left because the hotel was closing, otherwise I would have stayed longer. The hotel is well thought through and well managed. Lots of staff who are all polite and helpful. The chef is AMAZING, I don’t do 5 courses, but there is a huge selection and the tuna, lobster, steak etc all wonderful. Caters for European and international travellers with pasta, pizza etc - I would prefer a little more Tanzania kachumbari and mandazi, but the pancakes are exquisite. The Masai guards deter any would be beach sellers, but a beautifully peaceful area of the island
Cons: They have closed the hotel for refurbishment, they are working on the swimming pool which is in need of some maintenance. I would like a tap to wash sand off as I leave the beach ... that is my suggestion

Cons: Nothing
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great place for honeymoon or just relaxation from everything and from everyone. A charming view of which you can not get tired. Helpful staff. Clean, spacious and comfortable villas with superb ocean views. Gourmet meal three times a day. Drinks free (except for expensive alcohol and wines).
Cons: That had to go away :(
6.3 Good
Cons: We had a very disappointing experience which we shared with the Manager. The food was very poor for a 5* Hotel. The service was far from being on point. For example we could be in the gardens on sun beds and never be offered a drink or refreshments despite 4 members of staff standing and chatting and only the two of us staying. One other guest arrived and shared the same poor experience with the manger so it wasn’t just the two of us. We live in Rwanda and we’re excited about fresh fish and seafood and we’re told on Friday and Saturday’s it’s not available!! We had a piece of badly cooked frozen fish for our first lunch and dinner. When we said it tasted frozen the manager did not deny it. The next day despite being told we would have a seafood platter to show that they could provide good food we had 2 prawns and a piece of calamari each. The eggs for breakfast were in edible and the water melon cut on a chopping board previously used for garlic and onion. Finally on our last day of a 3 night stay we had seafood for lunch. Our shower didn’t work for two days. We reported it on our first morning and were told it would be fixed instantly. It wasn’t and we had to ask again 24hrs later then it was. Despite it being inclusive and rated 5 stars we didn’t not have 5 star service. It’s a shame as it’s a beautiful resort and not hard to fix. The best food and service we had was when they suggested we ate at their sister hotel, Baraza for dinner. The manger and staff were delightful and the dinner excellent. How come the group of 4 hotels all in the same stretch of beach aren’t consistent in service and food? I rarely write a poor review but this was an expensive, exclusive resort hotel and therefore you pay a premium which I always do happily bit on this occasion it was such poor value and a very disappointing experience. I would not recommend.
6.8 Good
Pros: The sunrise and the snorkeling. Rooms are very spacious and views from the pool are amazing.
Cons: No music or nice ambience in the evening. As it’s very small resort, with only 2/3 other couples staying, would have been nice to played more music during dinner.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The best thing about Zawadi is its location, and amazing grounds dedicated to just a small number of villas. You get a room that is beyond luxery, and the beach there is absolutely stunning. The pool, the private plunge pool in the room, all have amazing view.
Cons: We expected the service to be a little more pampering, with a little more coming to our room or to the beach easily, considering that this is one of the more expensive hotels on the island. The food could have been better and the service less intensive - a lot of questions on how we're doing by the staff, but not enough thinking around details.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location and beautiful hotel! Very nice and friendly staff and management. Excellent food.
Cons: Hotel could have a more personal touch in design: flowers, art, etc. Staff is incredibly friendly and will grow with more practice and training.

Pros: The view from the bungalow and when looking down on the beach
Cons: The place is too far and off the beaten track so it's hard to get to or walk out of , so we felt trapped esp. That you can't walk down the beach when the tide is high As a result they ripe ppl off for rides to anywhere, excursions, food(which is very basic and too limited on options and they make sure they give small portions for lunch so that you are starving before dinner and pay more... We once asked for more bread with dinner they gave us one little bun saying it's the last!) They charge 4 times more for excursions than local ppl (who charge already touristic prices), they refused to let drivers in twice for us to make sure ppl only use the drivers they are dealing with so they charge extra and take commissions The rooms were in a bad shape...

Pros: Beautiful beaches. Friendly staff. Good tours.
Cons: Difficulty in conveying the seriousness of food allergies.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Rooms are clean, staff is attentive and helpful. View from the room is incredible. And really cool thing that the hotel and beach are not crowded
Cons: Well I believe food is very important part of any vacation I should be able to choose what to eat. but unfortunately im this hotel almost no food. breakfast is only juice, eggs and nutella with pancake. God damn It ! I want bacon and cheese! And Cake its not just a sweet piece of bread its also cream for example.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location. Very relaxing and great team at the hotel.
Cons: There was nothing I didn’t like.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Great location with own private beach so safe from beach boys. Lodge and room are well done and the food isn't half bad at all. Definitely a good place if you want to seclude yourself for a bit.
Cons: A little on the expensive side
9.3 Excellent
Pros: I stayed here with my partner as an all inclusive break get-away. The location and beach is beautiful. Very relaxing atmosphere. The hut we stayed in was beautiful and we both loved that the huts are windowless. There was many options to do excursions which we declined as we both just wanted to relax. The hotel provided many facilities such as shoes to go and walk in the low tide, kayaks for the sea and a vollyball net. All the food was fresh and local to the area, the smoothies were excellent. The staff were incredibly welcoming and attentive to any needs.
Cons: We both felt that the dinner options were disappointing, there was only ever two options. Whereas at lunch times there was a broad menu selection. However the food was always great and fresh.

Pros: Nothing
Cons: I booked a family bungalow indicated that the capacity of the room is muximum 4 adults and its floor space is 100 square meter. However the room was totally too small for 4 adults. We also booked with all inclusive plan but quantity and quality of the food was really disappointing and choice of the drinks were very limited. Their facilities are old and cheap, and our room had problem with hot water and we had to wait more than one hour to shower. We paid nearly 500 dollars for this disappointing stay definitely we will not recommend this lodge to anyone who wanna good service and relaxing in Zanzibar.

Pros: Very friendly personnel. Very quite and you can feel the nature. Perfect place if you’re looking for sheer relaxation. Clean rooms. Very delicious food in the hotel restaurant and the portions are big enough.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Bedrooms are spacious, beds are really comfortable, views of the beach are spectacular
Cons: Hotel was quite remote, long taxi ride to the local attractions
10.0 Excellent

7.5 Good
Pros: Facilities are really great! The whole resort is beautiful The pool and beach just so amazing. Relatively good prices for drinks and spa. Many choices for tours etc.
Cons: It's simply an Italian hotel for Italians only. If you are not Italian it does not make sense to go there. Language, events, service, staff etc. are all in Italian. We did not care about the Italian language and simply did not go to the evening events in theatre etc.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hospitality was excellent, the staff were magnificent and caring, the food was great and we enjoyed the entertainment provided. We definitely had a good time. We will indeed revisit club Dongwe.
Cons: We enjoyed the pool and the level of cleanliness of all areas.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Very beautiful hotel area with a big range of green plants and trees; the biggest advantage of this hotel is its pontoon over the ocean and reefs, it is very useful especially during high and low water. Also, parties on the pontoon in the evening are cool. Food: a lot of seafood, like an octopus, fish, prawns (only at the white party), crabs, calamari. Tasty pizzas, pasta, spaghetti (this is an Italian hotel) and fresh fruits. Staff, even managers and boss are very hospitable and friendly, always smile to You and ask how is Your stay, is everything okay. Staff is always ready to solve Your problems if You have them. If You are not satisfied with something they always offer You something to make it better. Beach is very beautiful, always clean (every morning staff clean the beach), white sand, beautiful ocean with turquoise and crystally clean water. A lot of starfishes on the reefs do not give up and find them!:) Rooms are in African style, but as I think they need some little restoration. If hotel fixes some little disadvantages, it can fully pretend on 5* rate.
Cons: Some staff knows English quite not good, but Italian they know very good. The animation is only on Italian (as I mentioned, this is an Italian hotel), but actually, we do not need animation so it was not a problem . A little part of staff (less than 10%) was not as friendly, as biggest part (maybe because of they do not know English or they prefer Italians, I don't know). Rooms need some little restoration. I know it is not the hotel problem, but beach boys are really annoying and always disturb You when You walk on the beach.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The beautiful location and resort
Cons: The check in and check out. Check in did not give any information about resort for example what times the buffets starts, or the snack times at the swimming pool. Also no information on what the all inclusive covered.
6.3 Good
Pros: Very comfortable bed and spacious rooms. Many organized activities available to guests, like snorkeling trips every day.
Cons: Service is not always up to standard, the staff is not prepared / informed for B&B guests. It is recommended to get the All Inclusive option to get the most our of your stay. The staff speaks Italian and Swahili, not very good English. All activities are organized and managed in Italian.
7.0 Good
Pros: Location, music, beach, vegetation
Cons: Very, very poor breakfast. So, bad for 4 stars hotel.. Managment dont pay attention for it. Breakfast for some low cost pansion. Not for 220euro per day!!!
5.8 Okay
Pros: Food was great and varied. Beach was beautiful. Most of the Tanzanian staff were extremely professional and friendly. Hotel was clean and well kept.
Cons: We were shocked at how unwelcome we felt in that week because we were not Italian like the majority of guests and senior staff. We were not given information upon arrival about any of the facilities, and did not even know until Day 3 there was a daily tea to tide us over between breakfast (ending at 10 am) and dinner (starting at 8 pm). Nor were we told all entertainment would be in Italian and without translation. We were embarrassed on the last night when everyone else was dressed in white for the "White Dinner Party", and we were the only ones who were unaware and had not been informed. I also requested a closer room in advance as my niece has a wheelchair, yet the hotel put us in the furthest room initially along a rough and uneven path. They did not let us know the resort is on a long and steep hill, and only once did somebody offer to assist us. Even the African staff are trained to greet all guests in Italian instead of Swahili or English. It is the hotel's right to have a resort in Tanzania that is completely Italian, but please advertise this and notify guests in advance of the exclusivity so people can make an informed decision of where they choose to book, particularly at such a huge cost.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: As the facilty is run by Italians and most of the guests come from Italy, la -dolce vita- is part of the package with a very friendly, open and tolerant attitude of all guests, specifically and also towards children.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: It was a great week in Dongwe Club. A large beautiful area, pleasant staff, delicious food, a long beach and amazing pontoon, from which it's very comfortable to swim at low tide. Special thanks to the animation team, especially Gianfranco Bruno, they didn't let us get bored.
Cons: In "All inclusive" not included alcoholic beverages, even locally produced. No wi-fi in the rooms, rooms are dark. The food is delicious, but almost every day is the same.
4.3 Okay
Cons: It's a Italien orientent hotel, they hardly speak Engilish...
