Scores according to KAYAK customer reviews
Cons: "The flight is cancelled and nobody had notified us. I only find out when I went to airport. No good"
Cons: "The seats had a foot rest that, when not used, keeps hitting your shins and reduce the already narrow leg room."
Cons: "nothing at all"
Pros: "Attentive crew"
Cons: "poor food variety"
Cons: "1 1/2 hour delay"
Pros: "In general the flight was fine."
Cons: "When I made my reservation the time to make my connecting flight in Beijing to Dulles (IAD) was 2 hr. Air China shortened the delay to 1 hr. We arrived on time but did not get off the plane until 12:00. They began boarding our connecting flight at 12:15. My husband needed the use of a wheelchair and with the help of the airport staff member we RAN through immigration (flew in from Hong Kong), had to go through security a second time, lost my iPad at security due to our rapid departure. We got to the flight at 12:30 and made it just in time to board. Our luggage could not be transferred in time and arrived the next day. This is just too difficult for people of any age to do...my husband and I are both in our 70s."
Pros: "Sometimes the flights are half-empty, meaning you can get a full row to yourself if you're lucky."
Cons: "The seats were very cramped for an international flight and half of the foot space was taken up by an installed box of sorts. The "foot rest" also dug into my upper shins the entire flight (I had it in the upright position, but I have long legs). The food was really bad, basically inedible. Not just on this flight but on all the Air China flights I've been on, and both food options are usually identical other than the option between fake chicken or fake beef or seafood. The flight is super structured (referring to my 13-hour flight), that you're not allowed to sleep when you want because they have such a regimented schedule of when to turn on/off the lights, etc. On multiple occasions the flight attendants have turned off my tv monitor while I'm in the middle of a movie just because it appeared I was sleeping. With my 1 hr layover in Beijing that ended up being less than 10 minutes due to a delay, I made the rush through security quick enough, but my bags did not and needed to be shipped to me a day later at my destination. Air China purposefully schedules flights with such short layovers, putting customers' travel at risk. Not a major issue, but the crew surprisingly also had pretty limited English on the Beijing-Washington DC flight. For connecting flights, I have no expectation of English language ability, because it doesn't involve travel to an English-speaking country. However, if you're flying to the US, you should expect to communicate in English well, at least one of the cabin crew."
Pros: "Good land side service (partially because I am Star Gold) and fair on-board service. luggage was delivered faster than expected in beijing."
Cons: "Fair Food and Fair beverage... Air China indeed needs to have some western style food. seat is fair to poor condition; too narrow for me even for a economy class (mind you that business class is not much better). and maybe they should learn about something called "entertainment terminal". you stare at a public, plasma TV for 3 hours without change of programs. thanks for the ancient device. that does remind me what flights could be 20+ years ago."
Cons: "I have payed extra money for window seat. But that seat has no wondow."
Pros: "Good to have a footrest."
Cons: "Small toilets. Hindu meal was inedible."
Pros: "On time departure, courteous crew."
Cons: "Limited movie options for such a long, international flight."
Cons: "They didn't let me on the flight because they said I didn't check in on the flight to LA. And on the flight to LA I was there but they wouldn't let me on the plane. I wasn't being rude I was cooperating with them."
Pros: "Economy had lots of leg room surprisingly."
Pros: "The aircraft crew was polite"
Cons: "The connecting flight left me. Had to stay in China for a day. Mumbai airport didn't communicate with airlines in China"
Pros: "The flight attendants where excellent."
Pros: "Everything. I love Air China. Great service. Delicious Noodles."
Pros: "I was able to sleep most of the flight"
Cons: "The people next to me were annoying and smelled awful."
Pros: "restroom lines were less due to limited choice of drinks which turned out positive specially when flight was full."
Cons: "Had to call agency for confirming seats as web was never successful despite many try's. Agency in Washington was v good and helped. on long haul flights the choice of entertainment is poor. food could have been better"
Pros: "It was the cheapest ticket for the route"
Cons: "Air China still doesn’t let you use your phone at all during a flight even on airplane mode which is problematic when all of your music, podcasts, and audiobooks are on your phone."
Pros: "Smiling staff very helpful, selection of entertainment for my 14 hour flight, piping hot towel hand delivered for refreshing self, beverage selection, pillow, blanket and slippers. all this in economy class."
Cons: "food selection (chicken and rice or shrimp and pasta, side salad, fruit salad, roll) is fair but quality could be better."
Cons: "Not enough time to transfer due to delay and staff wasn't helpful"
Pros: "Good service, comfortable seats"
Pros: "Big plane"
Cons: "The TV screen is not working"
Pros: "Absolutely no customer service whatsoever, not even a smile. Best thing about this flight was the food and trust me that’s not saying much."
Pros: "Better customer service"
Cons: "Air China staff need to better understand and learn how to talk to people."
Pros: "I liked the food but few selections. I liked having ice cream as a treat."
Cons: "Some of the Chinese movies did not have subtitles or the subtitles were too small to read. Middle seats are the worse and the chairs do not recline that much back."
Cons: "I will never fly Air China again in my life. Absolute worst customer service. They lost my bags for 5 days and didn't do anything to try and make amends for it. The staff is extremely rude. No one speaks English except for "hello" and "goodbye". The meals are dog food. The seats are absolutely claustrophobic. Worst decision to try and save money by going through Air China. SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY AND GO WITH SOMEONE ELSE. All four flights with them were consistently terrible. Stay away. It's not worth it....."
Pros: "The IFE felt more tailored to the destination. Good selection of American titles and music. The flight was not very full and the staff was much more pleasant. The food was fine. Nothing special but it kept me happy."
Cons: "No complaints."
Pros: "No problems, no hassles, a smooth flight and an early arrival for a quick transfer to LA. The staff, the food, and the IFE was above average for this leg."
Cons: "No complaints."
Cons: "After long, chaotic lines to transfer planes in Beijing to head to Shenzhen I was showing my passport to the security guard, and suddenly he calls for someone, and another guard walks away with my passport. I had no idea what was going on. I wasn't told to follow him, but he had my passport, so I followed the guard to get my passport back, and the guard hands me my passport, laughs, and points upward. I walk upstairs and see a mess of lines. A bunch of flights were canceled due to a small storm. The machines to rebook a flight were broken, so I had to wait in a line for 2+ hours in order to rebook a flight for the following day. We were told that there would be a complimentary hotel, but I waited in a line for an hour to inquire about a hotel room, only to be told where my luggage was. They could have held up a sign saying where everyone's luggage was, instead of misleading us, saying it was a line for a hotel room. My suitcase was in a pile of suitcases from all the flights that were canceled, and was difficult to find. After spending 6 hours at the airport sorting out new travel plans, I ended up with no place to sleep, but fortunately found a friend of a friend to stay with. The next day, I arrived at the airport for my new flight, with no seat assignment. I waited in a long line to get a seat, then went to board the plane, and the flight was delayed 3 hours. Overall, it took 34 hours to arrive in Shenzhen after leaving San Francisco. If I had automatic updates sent to my email, or, if there was signage at the airport giving people information, that would have been helpful for the crowds of confused people. I also might have had a chance to reroute my flight Hong Kong to get in earlier, but I had no idea what was going on. There was terrible communication that was not due to a language barrier."
Pros: "If you want to have a pleasant trip to a city that is not Beijing, use another airline. Young people from Beijing are extremely cranky and unfriendly, especial when you get kids with you."
Pros: "Very nice and attentive staff"
Cons: "Delays without any information"
Cons: "It took 20 minutes taxi to reach the terminal in Beijing"
Cons: "Service is very bad and lot of delay."
Pros: "Good selection of movies."
Cons: "Flight attendants were rude, only dry cookies for snacks on the 13h flight, really hard to have wine seems they don't want you to have any. Only with your dinner she said...food wasn't great either."
Pros: "Serving two meals"
Cons: "Coffee was bad"
Cons: "wouldnt let our entire group on the flight after we all had seats because of a delay in our connecting flight."
Cons: "Airline didn't make an effort to hold the connecting flight. Also tried to book passengers two to a room for the 24 hour delay. Delay did not come through on vayama/kayak systems so when I called vayama they couldn't help because they thought the flight had departed on time."
Cons: "Terrible ticket change process"
Pros: "Gave me a free upgrade while I was flying alone."
Pros: "Cheap, everything worked out."
Cons: "Rude rude rude!!!"
Pros: "I liked the foot rest, seat space, food, and entertainment on the flight. The flight crew was quite helpful and friendly."
Cons: "The boarding was a mess that the staffs did not enforce the boarding in a orderly manner that caused blocking in flight for seating."
Pros: "I liked that it was cheap and one of the video games would have been really fun had it worked."
Cons: "My touch screen was broken on two of the flights. I was starving because there was no Vegan food. My knees were so bruised that I couldn't walk after the flight because they were so jammed and the person in front of me kept attempting to for the seat back when there was no space. The flight attendants didn't speak enough english to communicate. My baggage was lost. The customer service at baggage claim was rude, and it was a very confusing process finding the bag."
Pros: "The flight attendants were very helpful and eager to go out of their way to treat you special."
Pros: "Just a basic airline, don't expect too much."
Cons: "For US passengers, know that Air China most likely won't have your passport number on file to get your boarding pass. This is also known as the VIP number and they will refuse to issue your boarding pass. Not speaking the language can cause more of a headache trying to negotiate the issue. Note that all they need to do is input the passport number into their system. Experienced Air China boarding agents know this but others do not. I was also unable to use their online check in system and instead had to check in at the airport. Make sure to plan ahead. If you have connecting flights through AIr China note that your luggage will only be transferred if you checked them in from a major city. In my case I checked in from LA and my bags were transferred through Beijing to Hailar, but when I went back I checked them in at Hailar and had to physically check them in again at Beijing on to LA."
