We had our rental booked the Alamo. On arrival, we were told that due to an issue they didn’t have a car for us (we had requested a mid size SUV - KIA sportage or similar and while we were waiting we saw another customer from Alamo get one). They said that since they didn’t have one they are working with their partners to honor our rate and give us a similar car. I expected a similarly well renowned company - enterprise, budget, hertz. Instead they took us over to one of the local car rentals and got us a SUV with 103K miles on it, poor car alignment, and the check engine light on “which was the case for all the cars”. Ultimately the car served it’s purpose but that was a disappointing experience and the car we got was definitely not worth the price we paid.

I am a repeat customer at Alamo in Belize City, because they have always taken good care of me. They have also provided the most competitive prices. Several trips back I took a "better offer" from a competitor which ended up sending me to a third company, which in turn doubled the stated price. I went back to Alamo the next trip, and now for this trip.

Car had NO A/C - In Belize - when it's 110 Deg F. Remote Sensor system left me stranded for 10 min for some reason. Had to add 3 cans of refrigerant to A/C.

The car was less comfortable than expected, the radio reception picked up nothing after we left the airport area and we rented other cars in the past that did work. All in all it was still a pleasant trip.

There was no car reserved as expected although they did find us a car, albeit with 167,000 miles and a back door which did not open. We had no problems with the car for the most part but then dropping off, the office was closed.

We arrived BZE and found Budget easily. We asked to change our car because the air didn’t seem to be getting cool enough. No problem. The turn in process was as easy as our checkout process. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. No problems.

Cons:

The agency we originally made a reservation through did not have a car available when we arrived. They were kind in asking other agencies if they could assist us, but the vehicle we managed to secure was in very very poor shape mechanically. The trip across the country for the nearly two weeks was very difficult with such an unreliable and dangerously maintained vehicle. It was an adventure.

The Suzuki Jimmy was from 2017. Paint and dents on every panel. Windshield had a crack. Vibration from steering wheel caused hands to go numb. At 80 kpm the wheel would jerk back and forth. Air conditioner failed after 1/2 an hour. Avis should be embarrassed to put that on the road. I have to question Avis' standards for quality. Will think twice before using Avis again.

While arriving at destination we were told we had no car….. that they had overbooked and since we did not pay up front for car which was never required or told we needed to do (or I would have done it!) to secure car! Awful feeling to go through on vacation to be told you have no car after you have spent so much money and had planned and secured car many months in advance! Had to go to other local car renal agency and paid double amount that I had originally book for and had no insurance that I could buy with less then a $2000.00 deductible that I could purchase. The experience could not be any worse then I experienced. I will never book through kayak or Asia again …… I will remember and I will tell everyone I could possibly tell to do the same. Not the last you have heard from me ….. I can assure you of that!
