Pros: Great breakfast, very quiet rooms, convenient location, exceptional customer service. We needed to stay a bit past checkout and the staff was very kind and without hesitation allowed us to stay without any problems (or charges!). Will DEFINITELY be back.
Cons: The towels felt like sandpaper...plus confusion with staff at desk
Pros: Room was very large and the breakfast was great.
Cons: Nope. The staff was amazing. I didn't know workers like that still existed AND you had more than one.
Pros: Rooms were amazing!! Very large and clean!! Breakfast had a great selection. Centrally located to all the main attractions and easy to find. Really enjoyed our stay here. Highly recommend to others!
Cons: Pool was too heavily chlorinated to use for longer than 25 minutes max - made it really hard for the kids because they wanted to go swimming but couldn't tolerate the burning eyes.
Pros: was clean
Cons: old and outdated
Pros: The hotel was very clean. The room was exceptional! The breakfast provided was very good with many options. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location was also great. It was close to two highways for easy travel to the attractions we wanted
Pros: Very good comfort and amenities, especially for the price.
Cons: Only problem that we had was on our last day there was cigarette smoking going on in some room near ours.
Pros: Rooms were quiet and clean
Pros: Rooms were very nice and breakfast was awesome??

Cons: Wish you had non dairy milk option for breakfast
Pros: The location was great, easy access to everything. Rooms were clean, service was tip notch. We got upgraded during our extended stay and were very pleased! We didn't get the chance to use the hot tubs or the pool, but they also looked great. The pool was huge.
Pros: Very nice place to stay, well run and clean. Some early morning traffic noise but all in all a nice hotel. Would definitely stay there again
Pros: It was clean and friendly service.
Cons: They advertise low rates and then throw on what ended up being a 20% Destination Fee. That is false advertising. Go with other hotels in Rapid as they are at least honest in their advertised rates.
Pros: Staff was friendly and nice.
Cons: Key card didn't work. Batteries in TV remote were dead. Only Decaf Coffee in the in room coffee maker.
Pros: Good value in the off-season. Probably not such a good value during the tourist season.
Pros: Staff....breakfast....proximity....again the staff couldn't be more helpful.
Cons: Could've been a little cleaner (the room everything else was clean) wasn't bad at all just knit picking.
Pros: The front desk staff were very helpful. We enjoyed our stay. Location to restaurants and shopping is perfect.
Pros: King size room roomy, clean nice hot breakfast selection, shower pressure, retractable clothesline
Cons: Both "Hot" tubs were actually cool, my husband & I left it early to go back to our room to take a hot shower to warm up! Also wanted to go down the water slide but no water running or sign to instruct how to get it running. $$$ on snacks, not very friendly staff
Pros: Awesome water slide. Plenty of towels for the jacuzzi in the room. Breakfast deadline is not a hard cut off time, was able to sleep until 11am and still get the continental breakfast. Clean bathroom. Helpful staff when I lost my room key on the water slide.
Cons: Tv reception was awful, no point in having a tv in a room if you cannot see most channels. The 4th floor still had a view of a hill side parking lot. Toilet is very low to the ground.
A cozy stay at a comfortable price. You will feel the country charm enhanced by our fireplace, hardwood floors and personal touches of home. Whirlpool suites. Be Our Guest hot breakfast, in-room coffee, iron and ironing boards in every room, free local telephone calls, complimentary weekday morning newspaper. Indoor heated pool with a 100 foot waterslide and spas, fitness room. Award winning breakfast!
Pros: The location. Beautiful view of the city. The room was very basic but clean. Nice bed and pillows. Worked great as a place for sleeping when enjoying the area. Price was great!
Cons: The hot water ran out before my short shower was done and the tub/shower was oddly small.

Cons: Very loud noise from the lobby area came thru my room door until 10pm. Water wouldn't stay more than lukewarm in the shower. Informed front desk at checkout.they said sorry, we'll have to look into that.
Pros: Driving up to this hotel you think- uh oh. I'm being transported back to the seventies. However, they have recently (and still in the process) of remodeling and the lobby and my room was really nice.
Cons: The air conditioning did not seem to work in my room, so that may not have been updated. The pool is really small and indoors, so. I wouldn't plan on this being a vacation getaway for the family. The gym is also very small for my needs. Working out is very important to me, so I had to go to the Y and pay $15 for an adequate facility for me.
Pros: Nice rooms, beautiful common areas, good breakfast. Next to lovely city park.
Cons: Pool is small, cold, and has too much chlorine. Also pet ($30) and extra bed fee ($15) are kinda high. Also a little to far out of the way (away from highway and downtown restaurants).
Pros: good location
Cons: We asked for 2 queen bed but we got 1 king bed and we were charged extra for the kids which were not mentioned during the reservation. very disappointed...
Pros: Recent remodeling & updates.

Pros: Like the building, the pool area, room was comfy, staff was very nice and helpful, good breakfast, slept awesome the beds were so comfortable
Cons: Found trash between night stand and bed that house keeping must've missed, still hair on walls in shower, shower didn't drain good had water up to my ankles while showering, wall paper in the room was bubbled up coming off the wall everything needs updated also the duvet cover looked like it hadn't been changed dirty spots on it maybe they are just dingy idk but didn't look clean
Pros: Clean facility and room. Staff friendly and helpful. Room not as nice or equipped (smaller room & no fridge) compared to other Hamp Inns we have stayed in.

Cons: Construction outside starting at 6:15! Dirty floors in lobby and elevators due to workers... with no attempt to clean it up. No kitchen. Generally chaotic and noisy. No thermostats in rooms: either heat and you cook or cold and you freeze. Sorry, just a bad property.
Pros: Staff was great. I liked the location in the downtown area.
Cons: My room was a little small, but was kind of expected for a motel that old. Bathroom needed updated. Carpet & bathroom both seemed dirty
Pros: great location in the middle of downtown Rapid City, within easy walking distance to a number of restaurants, bars, and entertainment. The rooftop bar offers a great view of the town, the Black Hills, and sunsets. A few rooms have odd configurations (#19, split behind the elevators, sharing a bathroom 'Jack-and-Jill' style) that may benefit families or friends sharing a room.
Cons: The owners of this historic hotel have not invested in updating their property in a number of years, and it shows. The rooms are very small (standard Queen) - one room I stayed in had a desk that was completely unusable because there was not room to pull out the chair between the desk and the end of the bed. The "closet" was very small, only about 12" deep with only two hangers. In one room I stayed in, the closet door was firmly stuck shut, leaving me with no closet access. The bathrooms are so small that tall or large people may find them completely unusable. The A/C did not work consistently, regardless of the setting, and the drapes could not be pulled shut over the window to cut down on heat & light getting into the room. The carpets were filthy, with large red stains and decades of dirt grubbed into them. Staff are friendly enough, but so casual as to appear rude in many cases (multiple staff at the front desk.)
Pros: I love staying in a historic hotel. The prices were a bit hight due to Sturgis week, but I wanted to stay and enjoy the history and elegance of the hotel. The location being smack dab in the middle of downtown Rapid City was more then convient! My room was well outfitted and beautifully decorated. Additionally, during my short stay, the staff had been very helpful and friendly.
Cons: The room was filthy.
Now, I'm not at all a pick person and I understand "things happen" but in my mere 6hr overnight stay I encountered someone else's hair in the shower (stuck on the wall and in the drain), dirty bathroom mirrors (smears), a splinter in my foot from walking around barefoot, and dirt on my bed comforter. I rinsed the hair from the walls and ignored the drain, used other mirrors and kept my imagionation from wondering wild with speculations as to what the smears were, due to a lack of tweezers I had to squeeze and scratch the item out of my foot, and I shook the comforter out and brushed the dirt from the sheets. Oh, and I went to read the hotels room book, which offered a history write up of the hotel as well as points of interest in the area; the pages were stuck together and sticky. (I did get a bit grossed out by my sticky fingers).
Additionally, the water temputure in the shower was continually inconsistent. For 30 min it ranged from scolding hot to ice cold. Continually back and forth hot then cold, hot then cold, the water never seemed to stabilize. I had about 5min of luke warm water to wash up with. The rest of the time I'd been standing there at the end of the shower spray at the back of the tub, trying to take a sponge bath. Very annoying.
All of that aside, my final surprise came when I went to check out at 4a.m ,to grab a flight, and I inquired about a cup of coffee in the lobby. The (wonderful) front desk gal appoligised that they didn't have coffee in their lobby and that Seattles Best opened at 5 or 6. Not a big deal, but not what a traveler wanted to hear at 4a.m. :-)
I did not notify the front desk of my annoyances because I had been just passing through and only needed a bed for the night. Also, as I said, things happen and I'm not overly picky. Brush off the annoyance and move on.
Would I stay there again? Perhaps. I would check with the Adobe hotel down the street first and compare rates. If they were a bit more, I'd opt to pay the difference. If I did choose to stay at the Alex Johnson again, at the time of booking, I would mention my previous experience and ask that the room I reserve be checked by housekeeping prior to my arrival.
Daily Mandatory Charge will be added to the room rate and includes: Destination Marketing Fee, paid to Destination Rapid City. Cons: It was really loud. We could hear the people in the room above us walking around which was frustrating, especially in the morning
Pros: That Marco's pizza was located in the hotel. Really convenient.
Cons: The bed pillows were small.
Pros: Front desk staff was very helpful and polite
Cons: Housekeeping was subpar had to ask for coffee towels and proper room cleaning on several days
Pros: All staff we had contact with was welcoming and friendly. Breakfast was hot and my 2yr old loved the waffles. She also loved the pool.
Cons: We had a small issue with a stain on the sheets but it was resolved quickly by front desk staff.
Pros: I loved how beautiful and clean the hotel was. Whe my husband and I walked through the front doors we both said wow this hotel is the best one we have stayed at. The staff were extremely friendly and even helped us decide on the best tourist attractions to go do. Omg the bed was so comfortable...I have back injuries and I slept so good at this hotel.
Cons: I wish the hot tub jets would have been stronger but that's just a minor preference for me.
Pros: Breakfast was good and the desk staff were friendly.
Cons: Heater would not work when we checked in and outside temp was in low teens and the heater air vents were very dirty, not good for asthma suffers. They switched us rooms but only offered $10 off for our troubles. Breakfast area was clean but cold as front doors were not working properly. We were on the 3rd floor and could hear dogs in rooms around us.
