I didn't take out extra insurance and I was fine but this is very much a personal decision. I found driving in Belfast easier than anticipated and my old manual shift learning came back pretty easily. I would do this again, this time without the nervousness.

Drivers in NI are typically better mannered than the rest of Europe so don't be forceful, be courteous and you'll fit right in and be less stressed too
MattOct 2023
There are no passing lanes and a lot of drivers travel slower than the legal limit. So you sort of have to pick your moments well to overtake.
ErinAug 2023
When you drive in Ireland you have to drive on the left side of the road and the driver is on the right side of the car. If you are driving a manual car you have to shift with your left hand instead of your right.

It was fine - like every hire car you've gotten in every city you've been to. Not exceptional but does the trick.

If you're dropping off someone at the gate and proceed through the toll gate, ignore your gps and do not turn right but go forward towards the hotel in front of you. the return gate is to the left of it.
KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Belfast
Escape the congested public transportation system and pricey taxi fares in Belfast by renting a car, which is also the best option for getting to know this city. A car works wonders for travelers looking to explore some of Northern Ireland's most scenic routes and iconic destinations, including Dunluce Castle, UNESCO World Heritage site Giant's Causeway, and Castle Ward, which is the filming location of Winterfell in Game of Thrones.
All the big car rental agencies can be found at Belfast International Airport (BFS), which is only 18 miles northwest of the city center. All the car rental desks are located in the domestic arrivals hall, which is on the lower floor of the airport's passenger terminal. The smaller George Best Belfast City Airport (BHD) is only 3 miles from the city center, and its car rental counters can be found in the Arrivals Hall.
The main rule about driving in the United Kingdom is that traffic runs on the left-hand side of the road. As a small city, Belfast is relatively easy to drive around. If you cross the border into the Republic of Ireland, remember currency changes from the pound to the euro, and kilometers will be used instead of miles.
Belfast roads can experience quite a bit of traffic congestion, so you may want to avoid driving during morning rush hour (especially if you're driving into the city), between 6:30 and 9:30 a.m., and also during the evening rush hour, from 4 to 7 p.m. (if you're driving out of the city). The M2/Nelson Street/York Link junction tends to be the most congested road, but traffic also builds up on the A1/M1 in the morning and before junction 3 on the M1 in the evening. Roads in Northern Ireland are toll-free.
It would be a lot easier to navigate your cheap car rental in Belfast if you were familiar with the major local roads. The M1 motorway is the major local road that links the southern and western parts of Belfast to the city center. The A2 leads east out of the city, connecting Dundonald and Newtownards. M2 links the city center to its northern suburbs. The A12 connects Belfast, Lisburn, and Antrim along the city's eastern side through a major dual road. A24 connects Belfast, Dungannon, and Cookstown. M3 connects Belfast to Lisburn, and M12 provides access to the Belfast International Airport. The city's various shops, restaurants, and attractions are accessible by these roads.
Before you set out in your cheap car rental in Belfast to tour the city and the surrounding area, find out what your car rental provider’s toll policy is. Belfast has a good number of toll roads. Westlink is a toll road that cuts through the heart of the city and is a dual carriageway. It links the northern M1 to the southern M2 motorways. The M2 toll road connects downtown Belfast with the north of the city, where the Antrim Coast Road and the Belfast International Airport are located. The M3 toll road connects Belfast to the neighboring city of Antrim and is a longer toll road.
If you wish to rent electric Belfast car rentals, you should be aware of the locations of EV charging stations. A number of free EV charging stations are accessible for use in Belfast, such as ESB's eCars network, Source London, and the Electric Vehicle Network. The ESB eCars network has 17 charging stations in Belfast, including locations in the City Centre, Titanic Quarter, and Balmoral Hotel. Source London has 21 charging stations in the city center, the Odyssey Arena, and Ormeau Park. The Electric Vehicle Network has 11 charging stations located throughout Belfast, including at Stormont Estate, Belfast International Airport, and Laganside Buscentre.

It was not good experience with budget. Fist they gave a which not I was booked. I received a car KIA picanto, I am 6 feet tall and it was very difficult for me to adjust. I found car wheel alignment was not correct and was risky to drive because when I tried to make steering straight it’s go left. I called their customer service but they refused to change the car. Rather the the customer service told me a magic information, “KIA manufactures this type of car that all car’s steering are moved in left, they are not straight” I had nothing to say, I stopped using the car.

The car was underpowered, no reverse camera, no GPS, had no power on the motorways and quite pathetic headlights. The Budget staff refused to honour my travel insurance I had organised for accident cover, stating that ‘ You must have a Credit Card to secure that’ or we won’t accept that.I have a debit card only so I was forced to pay for their insurance which was exorbitant. They did not explain any of this or show me over the vehicle so I was left to look up the manual to see how to connect my iPhone for Google Maps. Seems like the Car Rental companies are competing to see who can rip off the customer for the most money. The whole experience was unpleasant.

Car was clean and nice to drive. Even got a free upgrade. Although the extra insurance required despite already having travel insurance was not ideal.
I was nit aware that I would need to have a 3,000 GBP hold put on my credit card to pick up the car. The alternative was to pay double the cost of the rental car in insurance.

Acceptable. We didnt inspect the vehicle together and sign it off before leaving from pick up which was a bit of a worry. Car interior a little worn/tired but clean. No sixt branded car hire stickers/signage? I selected wrong airport for pick up. Additional charge was a bit high in my opinion but understandable

The whole process was easy and great value for money.
Terrible — the morning I was supposed to pick up my non refundable pre-paid car they called to tell me it wasn’t available and canceled my reservation. As of 10 days later I still have a credit card charge but no refund
After dropping off the car with no concerns noted, Hertz claimed there was a minor chip/ scratch on front wheel. They sent a pic with their report. 1) this scratch was extremely minor 2) was not noted on return of the vehicle but apparently after the car was washed. Billed me £162.00 for this. Claim now submitted to alliance. Hertz also charged a £25.00 “preferred location fee - our pickup was at downtown Belfast location. Not sure how this is a preferred pickup location.
