KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Nassau
Renting a car is one of the best decisions you can make while in Nassau. This is because, with a rental car, you’ll get the chance to easily get to several fun destinations in and around the city. In the city, you can enjoy elite Caribbean cuisine dishes in one of the superb eateries on Salt Clay, swim and sunbathe at Cabbage Beach, check out pirate-themed art at the Pirates of Nassau Museum, and learn about the city’s history at historical landmarks such as the Queen’s Staircase. Outside the city, you can drive to Cable Beach, located six miles west of the capital, or Saunders Beach, situated less than 10 miles away. You can get to either of these destinations in about 20min.
If you know the major local roads, getting around in your cheap car rental in Nassau can be fairly easy. East Bay Street runs parallel to the coast and is one of the main roads in Nassau. It starts at the eastern end of Bay Street and goes all the way to the east end of New Providence. West Bay Street is also parallel to the coast and is the main road leading out of Nassau to the west. It runs from Arawak Cay to the western end of New Providence. Bay Street and Shirley Street are one-way streets, with the former lined with shops, restaurants, and historical buildings and the latter with government buildings and the historic Graycliff Hotel.
At Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS), you can easily rent a car, as this airport features a car rental center with agencies like Avis, Budget, Thrifty, and Hertz. To rent a car from any of these car rentals, you must be above 18 years. You should also have a valid driver’s license and an active credit card. If you’re not from the US or the UK, you’ll also need an International Driver’s Permit. The Bahamas doesn’t provide IDPs to foreigners. Hence, you’ll have to get yours while in your home country. Kindly note that you won’t need any ground transportation to get to the airport’s car rental center, given that it is within walking distance of the airport’s terminal complex.
If you enjoy scenic drives, you can do that by looking into cheap car rentals in Nassau. As Nassau is an island, road trips are limited to the island's length, but you can take several scenic drives to explore the island. Nassau to Cable Beach is a scenic drive that will take you past some of Nassau's most exclusive neighborhoods and stunning beaches, including Cable Beach. The drive is approximately 20 minutes. Nassau to Clifton Heritage National Park is another drive to the island's western end that will take you through some of the island's quaint towns and villages. The drive is approximately 30 minutes.
Driving in Nassau is relatively easy, given that this city’s roads are in good condition and motorists are generally respectful. However, it would be best if you adopted defensive driving techniques, as most of the roads in this city pass through crowded areas. Maintaining a three-second gap when following other vehicles, ensuring other road users are aware of your intentions by signaling early and clearly, and minimizing unnecessary lane changes are some techniques you can use to achieve a smooth driving experience in Nassau.
Since you will be driving in a new city, there are some recommended amenities you should look for in Nassau car rentals. The weather in Nassau can be pretty hot and humid, especially during the summer months. Having air conditioning in your rental car can make your driving experience much more comfortable. If you're unfamiliar with the roads in Nassau, a GPS navigation system can be a lifesaver, helping you find your way around the city and avoid getting lost.
Although driving in Nassau is relatively easy, driving here has its challenges, with rush hour traffic being the biggest. In the morning, peak traffic is experienced from about 8:00 am till 10:00 am; in the afternoon, peak traffic is experienced from about 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm Most of this traffic occurs on the roads to and from the city’s central business district. Hence, you should avoid the CBD area during the specified hours. The other challenge Nassau drivers face from time to time is slight road flooding. Most of the flooding occurs between July and September. This being the case, if you rent a car in any other month, you need not worry about facing this issue.

Even though I reserved the car over a month in advance, when I arrived I was informed that all cars were gone and I was out of luck. They offer no information about other options and just walked away from the counter to the back office. And I wasn't the only one they did this to. 2 other people arrived while I was trying to make alternate plans and they got the same treatment.

The car rental office I designated for pickup was closed. The airport location did not honor my pricing, and the woman at front desk was rude, distracted, and completely unhelpful. I will be calling budget to request a refund.
Reception at the rental centre could not have been better. I have not yet returned the car but have needed to extend the rental. This was done over the phone with the same young lady and, again, exceptional competence and service. Prices are a bit high but what else is new in the Bahamas!
Their offices were closed in spite of us having a pickup scheduled. They then made us taxi all the way out to the airport to pick up our car from a different location after we were finally able to reach them. Called maybe 10-15 times on the day of our reservation and only got through once to finally get our car 6 hours after our initial reservation started
