  • Note that all Florence car rentals are prepaid once a reservation is confirmed. Depending on the rental agency, you will be required to return the vehicle with a full tank to avoid the cost of fuel charges plus an additional percentage on VAT tax. Extensions made on the rental agreement after the rental date are subject to a 25% change fee. To avoid penalties, it’s advisable to notify the rental agency at least 2-3 days before the date of extension. Note that there are no refunds for returning your rental early (unused days).
  • All optional add-ons such as child booster seats and GPS should be requested when making the reservation through the KAYAK search aggregator. Remember, Italy is a perennial family-oriented holiday destination where vacationers are more likely to be traveling with children, thus making the availability of add-ons challenging during peak seasons. While you can pay for optional items along with the car upon arrival, paying for extras like child seats beforehand avoids losing out at the last minute.
  • To hire car rentals in Florence, you must be between the ages of 19 to 99 and present a valid government-issued driving license and a major credit card issued by Visa, Master, DinersClub, or AMEX. You aren’t allowed to drive in the city center unless you have a special permit (nor would you want to - crowds of pedestrians and streets like golf cart paths). Otherwise, as long as you have navigation, it’s not too difficult. Toll signage is clear: you take a ticket at the beginning and pay at the exit. The sign with money and a hand means there’s an attendant; just money means self-service and credit card lane is obvious.

The reservation was handled through Hertz representative at Florence, Italy airport (Dollar was closed?). I was not given any telephone contacts if I needed roadside assistance or other problems with the rental. I had an issue with a tire pressure indicator and the car manual was in Italian. It was stressful driving late evening with no contact information to interpret the seriousness of the issue. After a long delay, a YouTube video helped resolve the situation. Felt isolated in foreign land.

We booked a small car, Opel Corsa or similar and they had a Corsa in the lot and two Lacia Yipsilon but they gave us a crossover vehicle called DR which was very large and extremely slow which made going up and down hulls practically dangerous as the car barely made it. For paying so much and not getting anything close to what we ordered felt lile we got a bait and switch from the company. Upon return of the vehicle the office was closed so there was no one to explain this to. Ended up being charged over $200 for less than 24 hours for a vehicle that nearly got us into an accident due to its poor functionality.

I waited in the queue for one hour and when I was there he refused to rent me the car because my license is not international however two companies they gave me a Rent-A-Car on my Jordanian license so it’s either early on they should mention that or he should be doing what others are doing

Pros:

The staff was friendly even though inaccurate, the car was fine.

Cons:

They force you to buy crazy high insurance, are not accurate in their pricing and or car selection. None of it made any sense to me or others around me. My bills was tripled by the time I left the counter!

It was initially hard to find the location of the rental office however they were extremely helpful in explaining how to pick up the car and drop it off. Without their instruction, we would have been very lost!! Super easy drop off and staff was pleasant and responsive.

The car had some dings which was fine, but the lack of 3 of the 4 hubcaps (wheel covers) was odd and made it look worse than it was. But it was a good value for the long-term rental, and the car performed well and was very advantageous in both tight urban environments and on the many narrow town and rural roads I encountered. I never could figure out the radio but no mechanical problems at all.

We ended up having to switch to a larger vehicle and after all was said and done, and signed, we drove off with a BMW iX xDrive 40. Very spacious, trunk space was on the smaller average. Overall, it was a very comfrotable drive, and having carplay/android auto, it was super easy to setup and get going. The Sixt Firenze office was easy to get to from Santa Maria Novella station. The team at sixt were very nice and had us on the road in no time. I would definitely rent from Sixt Firenze again.

our flight was cancelled. We could not contact them. Avis took the opportunity the next day to charge ridiculous rates for the smallest vehicles. We went to another provider and were provided with the requested size at near the earlier quoted rate. I will not use a third party provider again. If not direct avis does not care.

Pickup in Florence was excellent, I had a very helpful service person who helped me decide which car to take. Ended up with a brand new car with only 8 km on it (we then put a problem free 1400 km on it over the next 10 days). Dropping off the car in Munich was confusing, there was no instructions about where to park or that I was to use a key drop box. I just saw an Avis sign on a parking garage so I left it in that garage and stumbled across a non-descript drop box while wondering around for a service counter. Searched my email and re-read the rental contracts to see if that was what I was supposed to do or not, but found no additional information.

Pros:

Nothing was exceptional. Parts is the experience were d fine and other parts were terrible.

Cons:

I booked a Mercedes Benz and was given a FIAT!!! They said it was the same category but there is no universe where those two brands are on the same levels. Total scam. My flight got in two hours late so they apparently gave my car away. I looked on the website and the car I was given was a third of the price of the car I had booked. Very bad, very unimpressed.

Additionally they have zero flexibility for arrival time despite attempting to call multiple times. Ended up not giving me a refund either after not accepting my virtual intl drivers license and physical American one

worst experience I have had. getting car took 1.5 hours: 30 min while they drank coffee and smoked, 30 min for paperwork, and 30 min to go to lot where car was. upon return I texted 1 hour before return and they were still 30 min late. Now I see there was a charge for gas even though I left more gas than initially.

It was a rip-off. At no point did the agency advise that Italian police now require an international driving licence for non-Europeans. At least the established American companies allow you to take the car, but they put the responsibility on the driver to pay any fine, which is an acceptable compromise. Surprice just steal your money. A thoroughly disreputable company!!

Very tough to follow directions within Florence (pick up - drop off), realizing it is a challenging city to begin with. Better directions would help, though the staff at the office were great (language barrier). The car was amazing, zero complaints (having never driven this before).

The agent refused to rent me the car I had reserved because he didn’t accept my legitimate drivers license which was legally acceptable for travel in Italy and I also had an International Drivers License as well. He was very rude and even swore at me. Unfortunately it left my family and I stuck taking taxis all over Florence trying to secure another last minute rental car. Since it was one of the busiest weekends of the year, all cars were sold out until the following day in which another car rental company accepted by license without issue but because we were staying far outside the city, it resulted in over $300 worth of taxis, a lost day on our trip and the car we rented was twice the cost due to having to book with no notice. Terrible terrible experience
