Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Florence

I would recommend using any of the more well known rental companies. Get a small car, the limited access highways are narrow and small town roads and allys are even narrower.
Verified travelerJun 2026
Florence airport is small so renting there is pretty easy to navigate.
AntonyJun 2026
Don't rent 2 rental cars under same name.
TonyaFeb 2026
Ask if they require an internations drivers Lic.
DavidSep 2025
Have an AAA issued international driver's license if you plan on renting a car in Florence. In the rest of Italy, it wasn't required.
Verified travelerSep 2025
Go early because it takes at least an hour to get your car
Verified travelerJul 2025
Be more specific with the drop off situation. Ask the customer is they need collision and theft coverage rather than automatically charging the customer.
PattiOct 2024
Don't get a manual transmission and purchase full coverage without any deductible. Not expensive and with the way people drive and the narrow streets, it will reduce your stress.
PhilipSep 2024
You do not need or want a car when you visit Florence. Rent from the airport location when you want a car to drive through Tuscany. It is only 1.7 euros to take the tram back from the train station to the airport or about 30 euros if you go by cab..
Verified travelerSep 2024
If you aren't comfortable with chaotic driving, maybe rent from outside the city. The train station can be a headache.

EduardoJul 2023
During the high season, patience and flexibility. Italians are very helpful to US tourists, for the most part, particularly with the language barrier. The rental car hub at Perestoia airport is huge and filled with tourists. Just be prepared and things will go smoothly.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Not difficult to drive but needs to follow navitation very carefully
Verified travelerJun 2023
Use a Garmin or Tomtom GPS.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Unless you need a car to leave Florence, don't drive in Florence. There are plenty of taxis and no where to park private vehicles.
SueMay 2023
You aren’t allowed to drive in the city center unless you have a special permit (nor would you want to - crowds of pedestrians and streets like golf cart paths). Otherwise, as long as you have navigation, it’s not too difficult. Toll signage is clear: you take a ticket at the beginning and pay at the exit. The sign with money and a hand means there’s an attendant; just money means self-service and credit card lane is obvious.

I did not drive in Florence but outside of the city. Driving in Florence can be a mess so be prepared.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Florence

  • Florence is great as a homebase for travelers looking to visit Tuscany, especially with a rental car, as there are a plethora of day trip options available. For instance, travelers could drive to the neighboring cities of Cortona, Chianti, or Siena. Chianti is particularly great for travelers looking to drive across the Tuscan countryside to enjoy some of Italy’s most famous wine country.
  • Need to pick up a rental car before you start your journey in Italy? If you flight lands at Florence Airport, you will find the majority of the rental car companies just outside, adjacent to the airport’s main terminal. There are a number of rental car counters in the airport’s lobby as well.
  • One of the particular traits of Italian cities is the Limited Traffic Zones (ZTLs in Italian). These zones are not open for normal traffic and are, for the most part, only accessible to residents who live and work there. Drivers should keep this in mind when deciding upon hotels and travel itineraries in the city.
  • Morning rush hour typically lasts from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Florence, and travelers are highly advised to avoid it if possible. There is also an evening rush hour that goes from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and largely affects drivers leaving the downtown area. Other areas to avoid during rush hour include the streets surrounding the Giardino della Fortezza, as this area in particular is plagued with traffic.
  • Note that all Florence car rentals are prepaid once a reservation is confirmed. Depending on the rental agency, you will be required to return the vehicle with a full tank to avoid the cost of fuel charges plus an additional percentage on VAT tax. Extensions made on the rental agreement after the rental date are subject to a 25% change fee. To avoid penalties, it’s advisable to notify the rental agency at least 2-3 days before the date of extension. Note that there are no refunds for returning your rental early (unused days).
  • All optional add-ons such as child booster seats and GPS should be requested when making the reservation through the KAYAK search aggregator. Remember, Italy is a perennial family-oriented holiday destination where vacationers are more likely to be traveling with children, thus making the availability of add-ons challenging during peak seasons. While you can pay for optional items along with the car upon arrival, paying for extras like child seats beforehand avoids losing out at the last minute.
  • To hire car rentals in Florence, you must be between the ages of 19 to 99 and present a valid government-issued driving license and a major credit card issued by Visa, Master, DinersClub, or AMEX. Additional Driver(s) must submit a full driving license in their name, and foreign nationals should accompany their passports with a copy of their International Driver’s Permit (IDP). Italy has a system similar to E-Zpass or FasTrak used in the U.S. called Telepass. Car rental companies like Europcar have transponders placed on the windshield of their rental vehicles to enable drivers to pay tolls electronically. If you must drive in most parts of Italy, do so over lunch hours when the traffic is considerably lighter.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Florence for $33 or less
  • Small rental cars in Florence are around 40% cheaper than other car types, on average

In fact, even if your credit card company covers auto hires, most rental companies in Italy won’t let their car off the lot until you’ve signed a waiver stating you have Collision Damage Waiver insurance on your card and that you’re liable for paying for damages upfront.

Yes. However, most Florence car rental companies will issue a 50% cancellation fee if you make a cancellation less than 3-business days before the rental date or zero refunds for a no-show.

The reservation was handled through Hertz representative at Florence, Italy airport (Dollar was closed?). I was not given any telephone contacts if I needed roadside assistance or other problems with the rental. I had an issue with a tire pressure indicator and the car manual was in Italian. It was stressful driving late evening with no contact information to interpret the seriousness of the issue. After a long delay, a YouTube video helped resolve the situation. Felt isolated in foreign land.

It was over an hour wait to get the car but the two attendants were working their hardest to get thru the line. Returning the car in Brindisi was crazy. The kid checking in the car was more worried about talking to his friends hanging around than trying to listen to me. I tried multiple times to tell him we had received a parking ticket but he ignored the comment and went talking back to his friends. Not sure what else to do.

If I would not have been experienced travellel and refused, he would have charged 150 USD for nothing! EXTREMELY poor behaviour!!! Never again.

We booked a small car, Opel Corsa or similar and they had a Corsa in the lot and two Lacia Yipsilon but they gave us a crossover vehicle called DR which was very large and extremely slow which made going up and down hulls practically dangerous as the car barely made it. For paying so much and not getting anything close to what we ordered felt lile we got a bait and switch from the company. Upon return of the vehicle the office was closed so there was no one to explain this to. Ended up being charged over $200 for less than 24 hours for a vehicle that nearly got us into an accident due to its poor functionality.

Easy. I liked that they went over the current damage with me. I’ve gone to other places where they just hand you the car and you have to rely on yourself to take a video etc etc to prove that previous damage was already there before you rented the car. The worker here walked around the car with me and documented everything before hand and after. Was easy.

I reserved two rental cars under my name back in April at pretty good rates.....when I got there for the pickup in Florence they told me that I couldn't do that....so had to put under my wife's name at the "day of" rate which was almost $1000 more. I shouldn't have to pay for the inadequacies of their systems. They should have given me the promised rate.

First of all, we were quoted around 500 Euro for the largest car they had for 5 people with 7 suitcases and 5 personal sized bags, which looked plenty adequate. (We realize cars aren’t that big in Florence IT, but we had a picture of what we booked). Instead, (of course) there were no such cars on the lot and we were given a medium SUV which was not big enough for all 5 of us AND our luggage! We crammed everyone and every bag in (on laps etc). All done and said, it was 1100 Euro with taxes, insurance for dings, accidents, window chips etc. When we got to the car, not only was it small, it was heavily damaged with huge dents and scrapes. We certainly didn’t need the supreme insurance for that piece of junk. In hindsight (if we weren’t in a hurry), we should’ve demanded a different car or taken the supreme insurance off and gotten bare minimum for an accident only. My suggestion- don’t ever rent a car in Italy! Trying to drive in their cities is stressful and dangerous! Most of the Tuscan cities don’t allow non residents to park in parking spots so it’s best to park outside the city and walk in. We would take a taxi or Uber next time. We actually drove into Florence, and it was so crazy busy and we couldn’t find parking and drove right back out and went to Siena instead.

I booked an Avis car from Florence to San Remo to drive on 30 May through Kayak and when I went to pick up the car, Avis told me that San Remo Avis would be closed and there was no key drop so I could not take the car. They recommended taking the train but I would have to wait 4 hours until the next train. I changed my destination to the next closest city but it was still an hour away from San Remo and then I had to book a train. Probably the worst experience of this international trip. I will likely not book through Kayak again since you don’t know when the offices are open and closed and if they have key drops.

our flight was cancelled. We could not contact them. Avis took the opportunity the next day to charge ridiculous rates for the smallest vehicles. We went to another provider and were provided with the requested size at near the earlier quoted rate. I will not use a third party provider again. If not direct avis does not care.

This was one of the easiest and most pleasant car rental I've ever had. And I've had hundreds in the US. The first car we drove away was a manual transmission. When we got to our destination, we discovered that we had very steep hills and hairpin turns to navigate. And it was raining. Drivalia allowed us to exchange cars and sent us happily on our way. The 2nd car was Kia and fantastic. The drop off couldn't have been simpler either...just drop the keys and go!

It was a rip-off. At no point did the agency advise that Italian police now require an international driving licence for non-Europeans. At least the established American companies allow you to take the car, but they put the responsibility on the driver to pay any fine, which is an acceptable compromise. Surprice just steal your money. A thoroughly disreputable company!!

I am disappointed with kayak because they quoted me a price. On their website and when I arrived to to Europcar I received a different quote. They informed me it was because I had booked to drop the car off at a military base, which I had no idea I had done. I was quoted 55$ or so by kayak and when I got to Europcar I had to pay 160$. I would like some sort of reimbursement from kayak for this mistake.

They didn’t give me a copy of the contract at pick up or drop off. At pick up, the representative did everything possible to extract money, first complaining of some small chalk powder in a cupholder that I quickly wiped away with water, then about a “scratch” that I wiped away with my thumb, and finally about some small wear on a corner that he claimed was a large scratch down the whole front of the car. He refused to show me the markup of damages on his report or to give me a copy of the report, and then charged me $1.5 K for the damages, which I am now contesting but they are not replying to phone calls, email, or contact form submission.

The lady at the desk canceled the reservation but sent me to a 1-800 number to try to get compensation.
