Zaventem car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Zaventem
Verified travelerJun 2026
Ask specifically if international license is requested by the company
Verified travelerOct 2025
Book directly with the car rental company itself, not through some intermediary like Expedia, where customer service = zero when you need it.
Verified travelerNov 2024
The smaller the car the better-everywhere you go it is narrow/tight. Very few lights, stop signs or yield signs-heavy traffic, many bicycles and motorcycles on the road that seem to have right of way. Very confusing/dangerous for someone from north America visiting for the first time.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Zaventem

  • With car rentals in Zaventem, you can easily explore not only Zaventem but also the surrounding areas and cities like Brussels, Leuven, Bruges, and Ghent. Some attractions and points of interest might not be easily accessible via public transportation. With a rental car, you can visit trendy destinations and attractions like Brussels Grand Place, Atomium, the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken, and Mini-Europe at a time that is right for you and your group.
  • Zaventem car rentals are conveniently available at Brussels Airport (BRU). With approximately five major rental companies to choose from, you'll have various options. The car rental desks are in the arrivals hall, and the Rental Car Park is just a brief stroll away from the Arrivals Hall. To reach the car park, simply take the elevator or escalator down to Level 0 and follow the signs for "Car Rental Parking" to collect your rental car.
  • In Belgium, the general rule is "priority to the right." This means vehicles entering a road from a smaller side road or street have the right of way. Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers in car rentals in Zaventem, including rear-seat passengers. Using a handheld mobile phone while driving is strictly prohibited. Use hands-free options if necessary. Children under 12 years old or under 1.35 meters (4 feet 5 inches) tall must be seated in an appropriate child safety seat. When entering a roundabout, vehicles already in the roundabout have the right of way. Vehicles entering must yield and merge smoothly. Some areas in Belgium, including parts of Brussels, have Low Emission Zones (LEZ) where only vehicles meeting specific emission standards can enter.
  • Zaventem is a suburb located near Brussels. As such, the commuting patterns to and from Brussels influence the busy driving times on main roads in Zaventem. Weekday mornings, typically from around 7:00 am to 9:00 am, can see increased traffic on roads like E19 Motorway, R22 (Leuvensesteenweg), and N2 (Brusselsesteenweg), and you also may see heavy traffic here weekday afternoons, between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. The Brussels Ring, also known as R0, can experience congestion during peak hours due to its connection to various parts of the city and suburbs. Inclement weather, accidents, or roadwork can also impact traffic and cause delays on main roads.

Zaventem has shopping centers like Woluwe Shopping Center and Westland Shopping Center, which offer ample parking space for shoppers. Zaventem has train stations where you might find parking facilities. For example, Zaventem Station could have parking options for commuters. Nearby cities like Brussels have Park and Ride facilities at certain metro or train stations, where you can park your car and use public transportation to explore the area. Look for on-street parking in designated areas. There is little metered parking in Zaventem, but in Brussels, expect to pay about €5 ($5.50) for 2 hours of parking.

No blame on Alamo, but a blame on Kayak and Expedia. My search on Kayak resulted in me opting for a car (insurance included) at Alamo at Brussels Airport. But instead of directing me to the Alamo website for actual booking, Kayak sent me to the Expedia website (intermediary) where I then did the booking. When I turned up at the Alamo counter in Brussels, it turned out they had a reservation without insurance on my name. And I had not received any voucher from Expedia or Kayak, so I had to put up more money to make sure I was insured. (Calling the Expedia so-called "customer center" was the usual ordeal, of course: ultra-long wait times and horribly annoying robo-menus, leading to 0% result and 100% frustration.)

Had heard negative reviews, but have to say this was one of the most efficient car rental experiences we have had. The car was exactly what we reserved and the counters on each end very quick and easy.

Cancelled our reservation without contacting us. Hired a taxi to take us to the rental spot only to find out it had been canceled without notifying beforehand. They only had a compact to give us when we booked a larger car. Sent us to another location at the airport which they said had our size car available, required hiring another taxi. Arrived at that location and was told they have no cars. Hired another taxi to go back to the original location and had no choice but to take the small compact or nothing. Crammed 4 people and bags into that car. Spent $100 on hired taxis. Ruined 3 days of travel plans. No discount for trouble. Only a discount because of the difference in size category. Not happy. Very, very unhappy. Will not use kayak or sixt again.

Pick up and drop off were efficient but very little instruction on car and procedure of return. Also we had a nice upgrade but didn’t realize how narrow everything is in Brussels-could hardly get in and out of the parking garage as it was narrow and on an incline- couldn’t see street until we were on it.

They wrongfully charge me for a scratch I didn’t make. I showed them a video I took of the whole car before the pickup, but no one answered the email or phone. They just sent an email saying they found a scratch, and will charge me $500 for it and went ahead and charged my credit card. Had to go through a process of dispute with the credit card company. The issue is that THERE IS NO INW TO TALK TO on Avis side. You can imagine how frustrated that is
