Pros: We rented a car from Hertz for two weeks on the Big Island. I called up to say that I would be there to pick it up later than I had thought. They worked it out perfectly for me and even told me that since I had booked, there was a special and they gave me that. It saved money and the car was almost brand new! Win-win!

Cons: The car I reserved was not available. I was offered a compact car instead of an SUV, which would not fit my family of 5. I cancelled the reservation and walked to a couple of nearby rental companies, the second of which was able to help me.

Easy to rent, quick
Pros: We were able to rent on very short notice from Hertz at a good price. Car was available and pick off and drop off was quick and simple.
Cons: We rented the car for two days and two hours and I didn't like that they charged us for three full days of insurance. Also, we had to return the car a little late due to timing conflicts and were charged a fee of $10 even though I called and tried to adjust the return time. We were charged a $10 fee just for the processing of the change which seems ridiculous. Took the lady 10 secs to adjust the drop off time and somehow that equals a $10 processing fee

Wouldn't do it again!
Pros: The car was fine, no disappointment there.
Cons: It took 2 1/2 hours standing in line to get the car! Not nearly enough competent desk people to deal with the waiting line.

Worst car rental experience
Cons: My flight arrived early and I slowly made it to Hertz. When I got to the counter I was asked to pay a higher rate than my reservation stated. When I questioned the agent about the price I was told that the original time was noon and since it was 1030 I would need to pay for an additional day. I said I would wait until noon then. The agent said no we don't want you to wait its onlt about sn hour enjoy the island. Off ai went and when I returned the car I was charged for an extra day because it was returned at my reservation time of noon and I got the car at 1030. I was never told to return it earlier than my reservation ststed or I would incur additional charges, and a whole other day is ridiculous. I will not use hertz again.

Hertz Rental from KAYAK
Pros: My experience with Kayak with a Hertz auto rental in Kailua-Kona was awesome. Reasonably priced and good inventory even with the Ironman taking place on the island. I will definitely keep Kayak at the top of my list when booking in the future.
Cons: I liked the intermediate sized auto that I reserved. And, Hertz's service was exceptional.

Cons: We were given a car that had obviously just been in an accident. Had to stop at pickup and point out all of the dents. Should have taken car back at that time. Immediately into out vacation low tire light came on. Then had an almost flat tire that your roadside assistance was going to be kind enough to charge us to fix. Fortunately some nice men filled tire with air from their truck. No thanks to Hertz.
Cons: The car was very beat up, dings and scratches everywhere, and it drove poor like it needed power steering fluid. The wheel also made a lot of noise and brakes squealed.

Pros: The customer service was exceptional...so friendly and helpful! Our friends, who had rented from Dollar, drove us to the airport and we were with them when they dropped their rental off. The customer service rep at Dollar was unkind and uninterested in their rental experience, which was the total opposite of our experience with Enterprise staff.
We'll definitely use you all when you're back in town next year.

Cons: They charged me an extra $40 because I went to the airport location instead of off site location. Our plane was 2 hrs late and the off site place had already closed and it was a Saturday. The off site closed at 12 and closed on Sundays! It was not your fault our plane was delayed two hours but they charged us anyways. Very very disappointed. We also got dayed 2 hours and 5.5 hr flight with a 1.5 year old and we hadn't eaten all.day! I was not happy about the price change! I will not rent from enterpise again because of the extra fee when it was not our fault.

NO "Pick you up", get yourself a taxi.
Pros: Agents were friendly.
Cons: Pick up transportation was specified at time of booking but was not available when we arrived, taxi cost $35 to Advantage office. This was not the first time something like this happened. "We'll pick you up and drop you off" their slogan is not true.
Car was poorly washed with many missed spots over a square foot in size of mud and dirt. The interior was passable. Car was older model well used.
Pros: The Alamo service was great. They were fast, pleasant, and easy to work with.
Cons: The car was HORRIBLE. I choose a Hyundai Volester - and it was TERRIBLE worst car I've ever driven. Looks like economy only has terrible p.o.s. cars :(

Pros: First off, I was greeted with a warm smile and welcome after getting off plane by Talalelei Uli. In a world where customer service is met with complacent, non trusting and non enthused employees, Tala was very warming to myself and my pregnant wife. He was wonderful in helping us and did his best to find a great deal on an upgrade. I sincerely give my upmost praise for Tala and the whole group at Alamo Honolulu. Thank you

Cons: I went there initially without a reservation through kayak and they told me they only had minivans and h2's for 59-69 and I asked about all those compact cars and midsized cars they had in the lot. Lady said they didn't have any. I get out of line and go on kayak.com and go back up there to another lady showing the Listings of all the compact and midsize cars and she said she never heard of the site and they don't have any of those cars. She also told me that's all they have and if I reserve through kayak she's not making any promises I'll get it. I get out of line, reserve it and walk back up to the original lady and the whole time she tried to upsell me to the h2. I said no and I want a midsized car. I go to to the lot and see about 14 midsize cars I got to choose from.
I didn't like the fact that 2 different ladies lied to my face saying they didn't have any of the cars I was looking for. I just had to call them on their bs which I shouldn't have to.

Cons: Clerks are not friendly, however, I think if you clearly spelled out ALL rules & guidelines on your confirmation email, it would help eliminate the irritation at checkout. Things like its extra for spouses to both drive, the spouse that's driving must pay with their own credit card (we don't like to bring all of our credit cards for safety reasons), etc. expectations. You also should not let 3rd parties book, if you don't like it when they do. It seems we encounter unfriendliness due to booking through kayak.

Minivan in Paradise
Pros: The ease of the check-in/ check-out process and the value of the rental. The shuttle drivers were polite.
Cons: The shuttles were full and we had to wait both times for a second one to arrive. The outside of the van was clean. The inside was vacuumed but had not been wiped down or QC'd.There was sticky stuff finger painted on the side window and something spilled on the side of the door and seat. The front window was covered in a layer of dust that made it difficult to see clearly.

Pros: Personnel at the customer service phone were very helpful.
Cons: When we arrived, they did not have the car we wanted so we had a huge suv. We had to return to the airport for another car the next day. That required approximately one hour of our time for the round trip. The second car we had was fine until the ignition switch was not working- another hour. They, once again, did not have the car we wanted despite the fact we were told told over the phone they had what we wanted. They upgraded to a smaller suv which we, once again, did not like. We realize the ignition switch was not their fault. When one is on vacation, they do not want to waste time with cars.

we locked our keys in the car and called budget customer service and asked for help but they didn't send any info for over an hour, so we called and cancelled and called AAA instead. today over a month later i got a notification that they charged me $55 for the roadside service that I NEVER USED. I will be calling to complain and get my money back. it's ridiculous that they don't keep good enough records to show that i didn't use the service and nobody ever actually showed up. AAA charged me nothing (I already had a membership which costs $49 a YEAR) and was much more responsive than Budget.

Pros: Upgraded to an eight passenger Nissan Armada for my family of 6. The SUV was impeccably clean and very comfortable. It made Our long drives along the south Kohala and kona coast very enjoyable. Quick pick up and return, no complaints there.
Cons: Little bit pricey but the positives overshadow the cost.

Cons: thrifty is the worst. I will never use them again. We rented a jeep wrangler for a vacation in hawaii and when we arrived, they upped the price $25/day. Upon return, we were dropping off the car and they told us the price was going to be $850 for 4 days, when it should have been $450. They said because we were 20 minutes late for our drop off time. And they NEVER gave us a drop off time. After stress at the counter arguing with person there, they honored our original rate. I didn't need this added stress right before a flight. Also they barely offered to show me how to take the top of the car off when i rented it because it was a convertible. Bad experience.

Pros: The car.
Cons: The service at Thrifty. I accidentiy reserved the car for 1 day later than when we needed it. They didn't have the Jeep ready so we were going to need another car for 1 day until the Jeep was ready the next morning. My wife was there by herself and the completely took advantage of the fact that she is a female. They tried to charge her 600 dollars saying she could just keep that van for the whole time instead of the Jeep (which I rented for 250 for a whole week). They also charged her 100 dollars over any of their online rental fees for the 1 day. Once we got the car, all things were great. I just do not appreciate them taking advantage of a female who was picking up the car alone, while I was flying in from another city.

If not for the bugs...
Pros: Ended up driving 2 nice cars during my week in Hawaii. Both were well appointed and comfortable.
Cons: The first was very nice, but was infested with bugs (due to the environment, not the car or people) and I had to turn it in for a different one. The second was said to be an upgrade, but was not as well appointed, had less power, and wasn't as comfortable, however it was still nice. I was told I would be discounted a day for the inconvenience, but that was not reflected on my bill. When booking, I repeatedly changed the turn in time to 9 pm, but I was still charged a late fee when I dropped it off... at 9 pm.

Not bad if you dont mind roaches...
Pros: It did the job, had pretty awesome gas mileage, and allowed us to go all over the island to see what we wanted to see.
Cons: Pretty quickly after picking it up we started seeing bugs, and only saw more and more as we went along. They looked like baby roaches, which was completely disgusting. We didn't have food in the car or anything and still we were seeing them crawling all over! We called Payless and they gave us a new car without issue, which I appreciated, though it sucked having to drive all the way back to the kona airport, which was nowhere near where we stayed. Unfortunately, the first thing we saw when we opened the door to the replacement vehicle, was another roach. We decided to just suck it up and take the car, as we had already wasted a lot of our day driving up there, and honestly, sometimes in Hawaii there is just no avoiding the roaches, but it was very disgusting and I really think Payless should take measures to avoid this in the future. As for me, I won't be using Payless again.

Cons: I had a flight delay in Seattle on 1/29 and contacted Avis to advise that I would not arrive until the 30th. They would not extend my pick up date and I had to create a new reservation at a higher rate. What had been an ok rate, I now had to pay more. The rental process, the car, etc. was very good. I'm just disappointed in the rate change due to an airline snafu.
