Top tips for renting a car at Geneva Airport
Travelling to the ever-peaceful Switzerland always has a special appeal. With its central location, it's uniquely situated as a base to explore central Europe. The great road network of autobahns makes car hire at Geneva Geneve-Coitrin Airport (GVA) the best way to explore to your heart's desire, whether you prefer a metropolitan experience or a road trip in the countryside. Known for great quality of life, the Swiss experience translates to car hire as well. Every company boasts new models with a big variety to choose from, so you don't have to compromise on anything.
Car hire at Geneva Geneve-Coitrin Airport is unique, because it is divided into two sections, each serving a different country. On the Swiss side, all the rental companies provide Swiss-registered cars, so, if you plan to spend the majority of your time inside Switzerland, this is your port of call. However, if your aim is to explore Switzerland and the surrounding European Union countries, it is better to rent from the French side of the airport, as EU cars don't incur extra taxes or duties like Swiss-registered cars might. While Switzerland is part of the European Economic Area (EEA), they are not part of the EU, and specific terms and conditions may apply to Swiss cars. Be sure to clarify this when you make your booking on KAYAK.
For the environmentally-conscious traveller, the car rental agencies do have zero-emission cars available. However, these models are very popular and slightly more expensive, so make sure you book your car well in advance. Switzerland is very environmentally oriented, so you won't have a problem finding a charging station.
Geneva Geneve Coitrin airport car hire has the added advantage of being the perfect location to collect a luxury car, with many models available. Spoil yourself with an affordable upgrade to a "premium" listed car. However, these cars require partial or sometimes even full prepayment. They also typically have a longer free cancellation period (between 24h and 72h) before your scheduled arrival. All the premium cars have unlimited mileage, so you can take the scenic route to your skiing holiday in the Swiss or French Alps.

What are the operating hours of the car rental companies?
While the airport is closed from 00:00 to 04:00, the French car hire companies typically operate from 08:00 to 21:00 whereas the Swiss side has slightly extended hours. Consider all the extras you may need, in case you plan on travelling with babies, children or people with reduced mobility. Book all the extras like a GPS, baby seats, booster seats or extra spacious cars when you make your reservation through KAYAK. Need significantly clearer instructions on how to find the pick up and drop off location. It's extremely confusing trying to find the French side- it took me 90 minutes of circling all over the airport to finally find it.

I had a terrible experience with Alamo. They falsely charged me for pre-existing damage and only removed the charge after I provided time-stamped photos as proof. It was their responsibility to document the vehicle’s condition, not mine. This caused unnecessary stress during my vacation and felt like an attempt to scam me. Their lack of accountability and poor service have lost my trust—rent elsewhere.

It was a nightmare. The rental car ( Renault Arkana) did not function properly. I had to call 3 times for road assistance. Battery kept dying. They left me stranded one day . I waited 4 hours and no one came to help. I had to hire a private party to come and start the car so I could go back to my home. I will never rent a car form Alamo or Enterprise. Claudie Secco
My wizard number was not attached properly by them. I’m a preferred client but they refused to give me my upgrade I’m entitled to. The car they gave me was horrible and did not feel very safe.

Offered a smaller car at first. Had to wait 1+ hour to get the right car. Car was not clean when picked up. Avis intends to charge me for supposed damage to the car after the vehicle was dropped off at their preferred location.

This Avis location is not accessible from the Swiss side of the Geneva airport, and you can only arrive there by car. This should be made clear at the time of booking, as the only option is to take a taxi from the Swiss side of the airport to the French side, which cost 40 CHF each way- an additional 80CHF in total and considerable waste of time. There is no way to access it by public transport as it is not permmited to walk from the closest bus stop to this section of the airport.

Firts the background:- I usually rent cars regularly through Sixt (for a good 20 years) and experience is always excellent, this happens most of the times directly but also through 3rd party companies. This time I needed the car, only to go on a short trip and therefore I went on your website (kayak) to get a car that does that purpose and the rate shown by Avis was about a 100 U$ and most other companies charged the double if not more?! Accordingly I went to Avis and the team member that rented me the car was very convincing in her explanations..........and I signed the document (contract), for a vehicule costing nearing 300 Euros!?! I have not argued and I am now waiting for the final invoice on my credit card..........however the bottom line is that there are many AdHoc Fees/insurances etc....and that I will not use AVIS again or KAYAK.......as the technique used in that advertising is non transparent it included what we call in the business language...........Hidden Fees and in french Publicite mensengere....meaning false publicity. At the end of the day, I ended paynig an amount totally different from what was originally publicised ( and this was not upselling, it was non transparency to say the least). Happy to elaborate further if your esteemed company is interested! +20.100.24.00009 Karim EL Ghazzawi NB: will make it a point telling the story to may fellow colleagues that are mostly Senior vice presidents in the conpanies I work for and work with, to avoid such traps.
My pickup experience with Europcar in Geneva was great. The person helping me was very friendly and upgraded us to a nicer car ("Something a bit more fun" as he put it). The car was great and we had no problems with it during the course of our trip. The main problem I had was during the drop off. The car's ground clearance was pretty low, and at some point I must have scraped a curb or something. As a result, there was a very minor scratch on the bottom of the front bumper. The guy at drop-off pointed it out and charged me $900 for it. Europcar is already not a cheap rental company and this extra charge for something so minor (I would call it normal wear and tear) was pretty outrageous. I had insurance, so I'll see what they say, but I will think twice about using Europcar again if they are going to be sticklers like this.
Horrible experience. We got there at 1130pm... They close at 12 and the staff left early. We ended up getting anothet rental for double the price..... Horrible experience.

Sixt website - incredibly clumsy & inconsistent. Prices varied by 50% within minutes of checking rates for the exact same vehicle class for same date windows. Sixt had 3 different reservations for me, each starting on the same date but ending on different dates <-see comment above- the website reservation process timed out repeatedly but seems to have retained incorrect information leading to multiple reservations. Rental agent apologized for issues, stating multiple customers had similar issues. Car was filthy on exterior, needed cleaning interior, windshield was very dirty. Sixt needs to invest time on theses points. I was told to make photos of vehicle when I returned the vehicle to ensure that Sixt does not attempt to charge for fictitious damage. Comment was made to me by the person in the car garage pickup area.
Europcar charged €835,44 for damage we did not caused, and the car was already full with damages.

I didn't know that the rental car would be on the French side of the Geneva airport. This was a major problem as I could not access it from the Swiss part of the airport without a boarding pass. I had to take a taxi to go all the way around the airport. It cost nearly 40 euros. A major, major disappointment. The lady at the check-in was wonderful. I think her name was Imen. She was so helpful.
The car had been driven by smokers and was smelling of smoke. It also had a lot of pre-existing damage.

Budget does not cover the cost of the Swiss vignette which allows the car to be driven on the main road into France and avoid driving through the center of Geneva to get to and from the airport. This adds €40 to the cost for every renter going to France or the stress of driving without one if you arrive late.

The opening time was incorrect. I had a booking for 23:30. When I arrived, office was already closed and written opening time was till 22:00. Nobody answered the phone as well. I had to walk about 5km allaround the airport because it was no pedestrian edit from french side of office and spent 270€ on uber. Otherwise I'd had to wait till morning for bus. Worst rent experience ever. I TOTTALLY DO NOT RECOMEND !

They tried to over charge me with insurance so I had to cancel my reservation with them.
Rented and pre-paid a car for 1 week. Arrived in Geneva 2 days late due to airline delays. Tried to call Herz Geneva several times on 2 different numbers to advise them of our delay but no one answered my calls. No email address available either. Called Herz international 4 times in 3 days to advise of the delay and was told twice they would keep the car for us and twice that we had to cancel online and redo a new booking. However, because the cancellation would have been within 24hr of the original pick-up time, we would have been charged 100% and then charged a second time at a new and higher rate for the new booking. Therefore, we elected not to cancel our reservation and trust they would keep our car until our arrival. Upon arrival in Geneva, the car was rented out to someone else and nothing was available. Ended up with no car and a $400 charge. This is double dipping from the rental company for a car that was already paid for. Very poor customer service as Herz international did not pass the message to Herz Geneva and then their desk would not help at all.

As I arrived to pick up the car and I found out at 23:45 at night that my rental did not include insurance, Hertz charged me 130% of the initial rental price for insurance. I did cause a very small damage to the car: a scratch so small to a wheel rim that one of the Hertz employees receiving the car couldn't even see it but the other employee receiving the car insisted on reporting. I was charged over 550 euros for the damage: a value that far exceeds the price of a new rim for a minute damage that everyone knows will never be fixed. Enjoy the money, greedy Hertz! Hertz or american rental companies never again...

Amazing experience with Hertz, we got a brand new Volvo EX30 full electric car. The only downside is the organisation to drop off the car at the French sector of the Geneva Airport. If you don’t have a boarding pass you can’t enter the airport and you need to book a taxi to come pick you up. The problem was, it was a Sunday, so there was no taxi and we almost missed our train. Something to plan in advance or that Hertz should make sure we know about during pick up!

Ease of pickup and drop off, good car. But service person at pickup was rudely brusque and said we would be charged a very high fee if we wanted a GPS. I knew that all cars have a GPS, so declined to rent one. The car had a GPS, but needed a software update. I used that but mostly my mobile phone.
