When you rent a car in Mexico, Avis is the way to go. In Mexico, there is a mandatory liability insurance required by law. That insurance is rarely covered by your personal insurance and is provided by the car rental company. If you rent with other company, they will charge you that insurance at very high costs (an extra at your initial booking price). But at Avis Mexico, there are no bad surprises. That insurance is always included in the online booking price. Again, Avis is the way to when you are renting a car in Mexico.

Cons:

The reservation was clearly indicating a drop off in a different city and the price did changes already when booked this way. We were charged double when we pick up because the drop off in diff city wasn’t actually charged according to Avis, this impacted our budget for the vacation, obviously we could not cancel the reservation cause all out itinerary was planed.. Then, the agency and location indicated in the avis summary was a location that is closed for one year now, we lost time and money going there and we had to go to another agency at the other side of the city that was actually next to where we came from. I will never book again through Kayak again and double check any information supplied by Avis

Passenger van

Pick up took almost an hour. They didn't have the van we reserved. Then they held part of our deposit because the drivers seat was barely damp when we returned and claimed they could not rent it out even though it was 5pm and no one was picking up since they closed at 6. Never renting from this company again!

- Reserved and paid for a 7-passenger SUV. At pick-up get indication, they do not have any SUVs available, but could geve me 2 cars for the same price. How is one person supposed to drive 2 cars? 2 cars would also require 2 sets of insurance charges and gasoline. Decided to take 1 car, with a refund for difference from reservation. Response: We cannot refund anything, Kayak makes reservations without consulting us, you need to talk to Kayak, nothing we can do. - Car received: White, auto, Nissan Sentra 4 door. Car was clearly in accident, bumpers were discolored/misaligned relative to body, car had multiple dents on doors and trunk. Car had a flat overnight, when service came to replace tire (same guy from desk at agency) it was clear the rim was bent, reason for flat tire. Car was driven to hotel and back, did not feel save driving it. - Upon return, a bump in front tire was identified, rep indicated it would require replacement and charge against deposit. Upon review of video taken during pick-up, realized the bump was on tire originally. When shown the video, representative refused to recognize it and recommended filing a claim to the insurance company so tire would be replaced. Refused to file a fraudulent claim for damage that was clearly in the car previous to delivery, that was not appreciated by representative. Car return required 2 hours, time lost from vacation for a car that was barely used. - NU car rental is not the name of the company providing the car, name is American car rental. It is not a good idea to provide incorrect car rental company information to customers, there is no graphical or visual indication at the American car rental agency indicating it support rentals for NU car rental company. - Worst experience with a car rental in over 20 years. - Rent directly with car rental companies, do not recommend using Kayak based on this experience.

Reserved automatic van for transporting five guys acround. When I arrived they had nothing close to that and our only option was a stick shift Nissan Versa…. Had to waste more time finding another option at another provider on short notice. 😖

Pros:

Nothing to like. The office wasn't at the address listed. I asked for help finding it and was told by a local man that they moved to a different location about a block away. He led me there and the office was closed even though I was scheduled to pick up my car. I called the number, left a message, and no one ever called me back, ever. After two hours of waiting I went to the next closest car rental place. The man at the counter said MexRentaCar is notorious for taking more reservations than they have cars, closing the office when they run out, and not notifying people they're out of cars.

Cons:

Have a car for me since I had a confirmed reservation, answer your office phone, stay open during your posted hours, notify me of any issues, work your tail off to ensure you have cars for every reservation.

The process at pickup took over an hour and a half in a tiny little room with only one desk worker. Then we had to wait for them to wash the car. When it was time to return the car they tried saying there was a new scratch and we showed them the pics we had taken upon pickup and they then believed us. Returning the car took about 25 minutes.

You should communicate more with each other. In the rental: 1) they didn't have the car at all 2) the price was much higher (from 75 to 185 dollars) I was told that you know it but do not regard it. Make it better please. We solved it directly with Hertz in the end. Have a nice day! Petr

The drop off was super quick and efficient.

Cons:

We were quoted $350 we knew the y were going to try to sell us insurance so we got insurance trough our credit card, even with our credit card insurance they wanted to charge us the $350 plus another $850 for insurance for $1200 total!!! When we told them that was ridiculous and started to leave the price suddenly dropped to $750 total which was still twice what we were quoted but we accepted it. Its really sad that they try to take advantage of people on vacation!!

Pros:

Economy is an intermediary for other companies in Playa del Carmen, they took the reservation knowing they didn't have cars. I got a mysterious message through whatsapp saying that there were no more cars. When I went to another location for the agency who messaged me, America auto rentals, they did in fact have cars but didn't want to give it at the rate I reserved for, because there were clients willing to pay more.

They are terribly understaffed. Everyone waited in line for over two hours. Very few of us actually got cars. We were told they were out of cars even though we had reserved them. They never even had a record of my reservation from Expedia. We walked away. We should get a refund, but Frankly, I don’t expect one

It was a total scam, we arrived there and they expected 3.5 times the amount of money additionally per day for the car for mandatory insurance. This wasn't mentioned in any e-mail, we knew we might have extra fees if the driver was less than 25 years old, but nothing else
