clean & quite. great central location!
less bulkier furniture in the room so a small table & chair can be accommodated. one can't sit on the bed at all times!!
The Monterey hotel is beautiful located close to everything. Parked our car and walked all weekend. The room was very spacious and romantic. Tub for 2, fireplace and great view. We could hear the seal lions from our bedroom!
Elevator is out of order and had to climb to the 4th floor. After a few time this was not so much fun. Reminded me of the Big Bang Theory!
The best features of this hotel are the location and the history of the hotel. We enjoyed the bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. The continental breakfast was good.
The furniture, while antique and ornate, was large and bulky in the small rooms. It is not a comfortable place to stay, with little space to maneuver around. The television (which was nearly as old as the room itself) was hidden in a wardrobe that couldn't open all the way because of the california king bed. Therefore, only one person laying in bed could actually see the screen. There was no desk or workspace in the room. The hotel acknowledges the paper thin walls and provides guests with earplugs to block out noise from other guests and the streets below. The overall experience at the Monterey Hotel was fine, but I only recommend it because of the location.
I liked the beautiful decor throughout. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Very clean and although it is an older hotel,it does have modern conveniences.
The room was smaller than expected, and although the windows opened, the lack of a/c did create a stuffy environment.
I stated here on a spur of the moment overnight. The location was fantastic for me. The staff was friendly and attentive when Coming and going. If staying here check out the coffee shop across the street...adorable!!! The charm in this old hotel is amazing. Beautiful interiors. My room was in the front of the hotel and had the most amazing windows. I slept with the shutters open so I could see the stars...several shooting stars too!!! I would stay here again without a doubt!
Noise though earplugs were provided. Construction was happening the night I was there and it did wake me a few times. I wouldn't let this deter me from staying again though.
We stayed at The Monterey Hotel while visiting our son and his girlfriend. The staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. The hotel is located central in Old Monterey. The hotel is old so don't expect a lot of modern touches but also be prepared for some beautiful architectural details from the early 1900s! Our room was very small but comfy. We felt more like we were in a guest room at someone's home than in a hotel but that's not a bad thing! The windows and walls are not soundproof so if you're a light sleeper do like we did and request a room in the quiet part of the hotel. But be warned, this may be in the back of the hotel so you may need eye shades as the security light in the back of the hotel is quite bright! Also be warned that there is no working elevator so if you have mobility issues (cannot walk up multiple flights of stairs) you might want to talk with the staff to see if they can accommodate your special needs before booking. I have a bad knee and did just fine staying on the third floor as long as I didn't have to go up and down more than three times a day.
The only drawback to this hotel is there is no onsite parking. This isn't too bad as there is a loading -unloading area right in front of the hotel. The best secure parkng is in the public parking structure a few streets away. The price is $7 a day but there is no in and out privileges. But when the hotel is right on the main drag you don't really need your car too much! If you want to park on the cheap then you can find curbside parking for free after 6pm but these spots are hard to come by. You just need to move your car before 9am the next day.
Great place to stay, many original features on perfect working order. Very nice night
I had a lovely stay here. I see a lot of noise complainers in the comments here, but it's an old building, so what can you do? The hotel seemed to be sensitive to this and included earplugs and a nice note in our room. We were positioned near the infamously loud stairs but still slept soundly without having to use the earplugs. Honestly, the seagulls outside were more noticeable than any noises within the building, but still not especially bothersome. Can I gripe about that? You're a block from the waterfront, that's part of the charm. The room was not opulently luxurious, but still a bit fancy. Everything was very clean and the staff were kind when we spoke with them. The hotel has a historical feel and seems well maintained. I have no complaints. I think anyone with reasonable expectations would be pleased with this hotel. It's also a 15-20 minute walk from the aquarium.
I'm not a big fan of television (nor would I want to waste vacation time in a lovely town watching TV), but the TV in the room was small and outdated. Again, this didn't bother me at all, but some people might care. Their on-site valet parking was pricey ($17 I think?), so we opted for the $7/day public garage 1 block away and lugged our bags.
The staff was very accommodating.
Asked for a quite room after reading reviews online and still had the most noisy experience of my life. Doors slamming until 3am and seagulls screeching. I had to move rooms and pretty much missed out on the relaxation part of vacation.
The staff was wonderful- friendly and helpful and smiling. The bellhops offered to help with bags, but I stubbornly wanted to take care of myself. Continental breakfast had many choices. Each room is unique and shaped differently; I would have loved to see each one.
We were on the 4th floor and it was a difficult climb for me. Boy, am I out of shape!
Very. Cute and good location. Friendly staff.
They put me on the 4th floor there was NO elevator. They did have a bell man carry my luggage up for me. The first room I was put in smelled of mildew or ? They then moved me down one floor. Nice room but right next to the staircase everyone had to drag their luggage up. Very loud late into the night. Also no AC. Opening the window was loud too because of the nesting seagulls right outside my window. Ugh BUT in the managers favor when I told them how I could not sleep through all this they said the would have the room charge credited. Thank you.
Amazing location Heart of downtown Anywhere is pretty much walking distance Complimentary breakfast
No self parking lot Super old mattress and bed Tiny rooms No AC or heater
Great location. We took a couple of wonderful walks down to the waterfront. We always love seeing the marine life in Monterey. The staff were very friendly and always welcoming. The room was comfortable -- nothing luxurious, but it suited our purposes very well. Love the hotel's interior -- very nice job of restoration and upkeep. Very pleased we could find a room here on a popular holiday weekend.
An elevator would be appreciated.
Location is perfect for getting around the city. In the heart of downtown Monterey and there are plenty restaurants in the area
The building is old and so is the furniture. Amenities were a bit out dated and the bed frame squeaked so much I couldn't get to sleep
As soon as we got there the staff was super friendly. As we were checking in, the woman at the front desk automatically offered us a complimentary upgrade. The room was phenomenal. Most amazing views in the bedroom, bathroom and living area. Cutely decorated. Most definitely will be staying here again!
Stepped on a shard of glass in te bathroom from, what I'm assuming, the people who were staying there before us. But wasn't that big of a deal to me at least
I really felt the history in this hotel as well as a few modern convienances like wifi. The hotel is kept very clean and elegant I would defiantly come back
Bathroom is small
The friendliness of the staff, the ambience and furnishings, the location, the value, the courteous attitude...I could go on! I eavesdropped on a fantastic history "lesson" given by the front desk attendant. Although I grew up in Monterey, I learned many things I didn't know. Don't be afraid to ask questions. The staff genuinely loves Monterey and it shows!
Not much to dislike! Soon to be ADA compliant with the addition of a functioning elevator=even better. In the meantime, if the stairs are overwhelming with baggage, tip the bellman and make his/her day with appreciation of how often they climb these historic staircases. Such a grand building! I'll be back!
