9.6 Excellent
Pros: A little gem! Yoko is the nicest host! Trust the comments - if you want a once in a lifetime experience in a guesthouse in Japan, stay here. The double bedroom was really nice too, plenty of space. Location is perfect - bike rental 1 min from the house and close to main points. I can’t recommend it enough!!!
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Yoko the host is super super nice! You'll feel at home. The most personal experience in lodging we had in Japan. The house is in a quiet place 30meters off from an already quiet road. The house is 3 rooms only, one tatami room, one 2 bunk, and a dormitory for 4-6 or so. Very comfortable bedding, and the rooms can be made dark to sleep in the morning, which is not that common. Super nice crepes restaurant 7mins away for breakfast, and nice vegetarian options in the covered market 10mins away. We advise to use the OKU guesthouse as a base to visit Kyoto and even osaka for day trips. The private kintetsu station to Kyoto is 5mins away from oku, and even if not on JR pass it is only 500yen or so. In Nara the lodging and food are much better value than in Kyoto.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I liked everything! Amazing host and nice space!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a great time at the guest house. Yoko is a very kind host and helped us a lot during our stay. She even invited us too have a drink with her friends in the evening which was great. Before our departure she warned us of the coming Taifun which helped us tremendously because noone informed us of it before! The guesthouse is very clean and our japanese style room was really spacious. Would definetly recommend, especially for couples! Thanks a lot Yoko!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Thanks Yoko san for her hospitality, my parents and i had an unforgettable stay here. We not only tried the tatami and the traditional japanese house, but also chatted together with her friends, which let us know more about japanese people and life. From this point of view , the experience is far more valued than we paid for the stay.
Cons: none.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Yoko was an incredibly friendly and personable host. Her place is clean and comfortable. Like staying with a good friend, you feel right at home. Her place is really well-located and within walking distance to the subway/train station. Would definitely stay with her again!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Most amazing experience for our entire trip in Japan The place is magical, the people is incredibly kind. It has been a dream come true
Cons: Our stay was too short, didn’t want to leave
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful retreat in the primeval forest of Nara. Amazing dinners and excellent hospitality.
Cons: A bit more English proficiency would be nice, and a few less bugs who found their way in from the forest.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Really traditional and beautiful
Cons: Staff don’t speak English that well
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Amazing Japanese dinner. Warm and welcoming staff. City taxi cancelled our pick-up in the last minute and hotel staff took us to the trains station so that we don't miss our departure.
6.3 Good
Pros: The property is located in a conserved forest, peaceful, secluded, natural, mystical, gloomy; a ghastly place walking around and sleeping during the night. The building is original, a typical old Japanese house, it was an unforgetable experience. The private dining room is great, with relax, quiet forest view, the Kaiseki dinner and breakfast was great and delicious, the room service was excellent (Special thank to Maiko San, a friendly, cordial and smiling person.) The Onsen was great.
Cons: Certain part of the building needs maintenance and refurbishment, however, the place is generally clean enough. The reception was not good at the beginning; no body helped us for the luggage, and upon our earlier arrival at about 3 pm, we were told to go around and return back at 4, (there were nothing around but the forest! and we were tired after the long journey), only under our request and complain, we were allowed to sit in the waiting room and check-in earlier at 3:30 pm, and the service was much improved later.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Can’t say enough about the gorgeous location. The forest was breathtaking. The staff we really nice and helpful, and the kitchen did a fantastic job accommodating my vegan diet. Such a great experience!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location was amazing. Room v nice and traditional. Evening meal v extensive and interesting.
Cons: Hand drier in the bathroom
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It’s a charming ryokan in the wonderful forest, with the river running near your window and a perfect location for exploring the parks and shrines by feet. Excellent cuisine. Very welcoming staff. They also organized a wonderful in-room massage for us.
Cons: It’s a bit dated, but that can be said about most of the ryokans.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The guesthouse is an old house located few minutes by foot from the Nara park, separated from a busy street by a small garden. We had the room facing the garden/street, there wasn't really much street noise. There's everything one could need in the kitchen, the common room is comfortably and spacious. Everything was clean. Japanese breakfast as well as the Western style one were abundant and excellent.
Cons: The net in the window was broken – so fresh air comes with mosquitoes (but there's an insecticide killer available).

Pros: The Japanese house architecture. The friendly shared spaces with other guests the fact that yuzan was small so limited guest number
9.6 Excellent

Hiloki Hostel - Nara - Building

9.3 Excellent (317 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at HILOKI HOSTEL in Nara, you'll be within a 5-minute drive of Kofuku-ji Shrine and Nara National Museum. Featured amenities include luggage storage, laundry facilities, and refrigerator in a common area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly host, and very well equipped and comfortable common area and kitchen
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great place, with a very nice owner :) Near the train station. The rooms with tatami are very beautiful. The bathroom is clean and works perfectly. There are many cooking utensils at disposal (and a fridge). I definitely recommend it ! Thank you for the warm welcome Hiloki :D
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hostel is a short walk from Nara park and other attractions. I can't remember how long the walk was but we did not need to take any sort of bus or train transportation to get to Nara park and associated temples. The neighborhood was nice and quiet at night. After we checked out, Hiloki was able to store our luggage while we explored Nara. The AC was wonderful. The facilities were clean. And the rooms had tatami mats which was a plus for me.
Cons: Hiloki hostel was a bit tricky to find for us. I highly suggest for anyone traveling to Hiloki to use GPS or be proactive about asking for directions. The facade is not particularly appealing, but the interior was very nice and clean. Also, be warned that this location is CASH ONLY.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazingly close to nara Park and a very friendly host!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: close from the train station and the bus, there is the main street with restaurant and bar 5min walking
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is 8 mins from Nara Park, and 5 from the train/coach station, so is perfect. The room was so clean and well kept, and the shower/kitchen facilities were great - shampoo/conidtioner/bodywash provided - a full kitchen set with two hobs! This place feels so homey thanks to the most personable and helpful host; Hiloki. He allowed us to leave our bags before and after checkout and check in early - which was a relief and there's free coffee/tea - which we needed after an overnight coach trip from Tokyo. Hiloki also has loads of knowledge of the area and other places if you're travelling around, speaks great English and keeps incredibly helpful maps/pamphlets/restaurant recommendations in the sitting area. On the last night he came out with a TV for the rugby (Japan v Russia) and we sat watching the game with a beer, truly it's just like being in a friends living room at home. The best stay we could have hoped for! I can't stress enough how great this place is/how great Hiloki is. I was bloody sad to leave.
Cons: There was nothing to dislike here at all. This is the best hostel I've stayed at, period.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All brand new and clean . Very good location as you can walk everywhere . Hiloki was very nice and helpfull!
Cons: nothing

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Safe environment. Don’t even have a lock on the door!
Cons: A little too noisy due to closer location of guest rooms to the common area and entrance.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very comfortable hostel stay, sweet and cheerful host Miki who provides information about the surroundings and sights. Both Nara park and the train station are in a walking distance from the property, which is located in a quiet residential area.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Miki is so nice and it’s so lucky for us to select her hostel as our first stop in Japan. Thank you so much for your warm service and help!!
Cons: I think it is good enough
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I had an excellent stay in Nara. Miki is the perfect guide -- she showed us around, told us everything about the city, the restaurants, and answered all our questions. We even had homemade Japanese pizza! The room is cosy, the house is well situated: close to the park, the train station, and the supermarket. I highly recommend it.
10.0 Excellent

The hostel is cosy, quiet, clean and well equipped. It's only 15 minutes walk to Kintetsu Nara station, very convenient for shopping or taking the train. Highly recommended!
Cons: nothing

Koto-No-Yado Musashino - Nara - Building
8
9.2 Excellent (334 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Koto-no-yado Musashino in Nara, you'll be within a 15-minute walk of Kasuga Shrine and Nara Park. This 4-star ryokan is 1 mi (1.6 km) from Nara National Museum and 1.3 mi (2.1 km) from Kofuku-ji Shrine.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The service was impeccable and they went out of their way to meet the needs of my vegan daughter. The many courses served for dinner were superb. The location with the deer on the doorstep was wonderful.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is just perfect! The second you step out from the ryokan, you have this hill of deer before you and shops to your left and right. The ryokan is located in the park and is surrounded by trees and countless places to wander off and explore. The room was large, larger than we needed probably, and so relaxing to come back to after walking for the entire day.
Cons: The curfew was 11, which isn't bad at all but worth noting. Nara didn't seem to have much of a night life so this didn't impact us much honestly. By the time we returned to the ryokan though, the onsen was closed so we did miss out on spending time in there which was a shame. I believe it closed at 10 so don't miss out!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Great service and location, but a little too pricey. We were served a huge number of beautifully prepared dishes (included in the price). We then understood we are not fans of Japanese food...
Cons: Japanese breakfast (I guess Japanese people would disagree).
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Location next to the park was convenient. We enjoyed the traditional Japanese attire.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hospitality of all the people working there!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: everything
Cons: nothing
7.5 Good
Pros: Traditional ryokan with very good position into the Nara Park, great courtesy of the staff, free bicycle rental, wonderful dinners/breakfasts
Cons: Very expensive, not excellent quality of the building (no curtains for light in the morning, continuous slamming doors due to the wind in the night), only 5 channel on TV
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. The staff. The food. The location to the temples. The decor. It was amazing. Great value. My best stay in Japan thus far. Could not recommend more highly.
Guesthouse Tamura - Nara - Building
9
9.3 Excellent (123 reviews)
Overview Reviews
A peaceful room for you in Nara. Perfect for strolls in Nara town and Nara Park! We have shared dormitory rooms with bunk beds as well as private rooms.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: One of the most spacious and beautiful rooms we stayed in during our honeymoon, and you really feel at home with the charming owners! Nice breakfast and a great location for all the sights of Nara.
Cons: Nothing!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Atmosphere is traditional style home and great vegetation breakfast
Cons: Bed mat and pillow
5.4 Okay
Pros: Very close to Nara Park.
Cons: Extremely noisy at all times, with most of the noise being made by the owner herself, from 6 AM to 11 PM. If you're a light sleeper, this place is not for you. Unfriendly, dishonest owner. Overall, poor quality-price ratio.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Close to the deer park. The owner threw a small gathering for ascension day. Great experience!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The host was super accommodating, we ended up checking in late and she also let us hang out in the common room until our night bus at 10:00pm. Having a sink in the room was very convenient for teeth brushing! Shower was nice, hot water and a good area to stash your stuff. The girls dorm had its own temperature control, and extra (super soft) blankets and pillows handy if needed! The traditional Japanese breakfast was perfect! Miso, rice, pickled vegetables, squash, some sort of beans and veggies, and sea weed salad. The deer park is super close, and the Nara visitor center.
Cons: The sink in the room only had cold water, so if you wanted warm water to wash your face you would have to go to the shower room. If all three occupants of the female dorm had suitcases any larger than carryon it would be a bit tight, we had two carry on suitcases only and the other occupant had a backpack, it was difficult to open a suitcase.
7.5 Good
Pros: Nice authentic 100 years old japanese house
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Location is very good, near all the main attractions, pretty straightforward to get to from train station. Breakfast was cheap and delicious, room was comfy and quiet, the host experienced and english speaking.
Cons: Room is pretty small, if you roll out the futons there is almost no space for anything else.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The owner was a lovely lady who makes a fantastic breakfast! Room was a great traditional Japanese room and the guesthouse is located close to the park where you will take way too many photos of the deer!
Cons: Check in was maybe a bit late (4pm) but this isn't uncommon in Japan. There was luggage storage available.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was beautiful and peacefull place. I recomend for every one who wants to stay at Nara. An the breakfest is 100% worth the money.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The hospitality of this guest house was extraordinary! The host is very kind, welcoming and she speaks good English, too! Our room was spacious and cosy with a traditional Japanese ambiance. The Japanese breakfast was delicious with an absolute excellent value-to-money! Shared amenities were very good (toilets, bathroom/shower, dining area). The location is very good (very close to the Parc as well as to Railway station and market).

Featured amenities include complimentary wired Internet access, a business center, and complimentary newspapers in the lobby. Limited parking is available onsite.
7.5 Good
Pros: Beautiful room with outlook onto garden courtyard.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Centre of town can be reached in a couple of minutes. Very friendly owners (who gave us great ideas for lunch and dinner in the surroundings); old, traditional Japanese house (ex-calligraphy school). Large (and quite beautiful, especially the one downstairs) rooms.
Cons: Really a "youthhostel" feeling, which somehow surprised us. List of rules (incl. switch-off of electricity at 11:00 p.m.!) that you are explicitly and upon arrival made to read, incl. that you are to unmake your bed and bring down sheets and everything upon departure. Besides tea and water, you have to pay extra for anything that you desire (incl. extra towel, bicycle). No jakuta (in-house "kimono") provided. Your room will not be entered during your stay, for the better and the worse of it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The beautiful home and the lovely helpful hosts.
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I think the location is great since the restaurant around 10 mins and the supermarket around 5 mins. The bus station is pretty close, like 1 min walk. However, everything in Nara close around 9 pm or early, so if you wanna hang out at night, be sure you arrive as early as possible. If you are go with older/inconvenience people, please remember contact house owner at first. There is a room at first floor, but most of them are in second floor (no elevator but stairs)
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The people were really nice and spoke very good English.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hosts were amazing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great place with clean rooms and excellent shower. Staff are very nice and accomodating and location is 10 min from Nara's main attractions.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: A beautiful and cozy place with a very personal touch. The owners, Kumiko and Shunju, were super friendly and very helpful. The centre of Nara is easily reached on foot. All in all, would wholeheartedly recommend!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a very lovely and traditional guesthouse near the station. It is very clean and has a nice atmosphere. The owners are very lovely and always helpful. They‘ll give you information about all the showplaces around the area. You feel very welcome. In the living room is a place to eat and there is coffee and tea for free. This traditional guesthouse shows you a bit of the good old Japanese style. Very nice!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Gorgeous house with a rich history, nice owners, has everything you may need.
Cons: Not a fan of late check in times in Japan. 4pm - 10am is too little for a house like that, so be sure to stay at least two nights.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast, clean, location
Cons: Small room if you have baggage
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The onsen was excellent. Multiple pools of different heat, gorgeous, and had a sauna. Breakfast was amazing as well, and the complimentary night soba was simple and delicious, perfect nightcap. I really enjoyed Nara and the hotel was a major part of what made it special. And the deer, naturally.
Cons: You can hear the trains, but it's right next to station. Easy trade off.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice atmosphere, between a hotel and a SPA. The Onsen inside the hotel are nice and well kept.
Cons: Breakfast was abundant but nothing outstanding. I still find weird that in 2019 tattoos pose a problem to enter in the Onsen, especially for foreigners.
7.9 Good
Pros: Good that they gave the option to not clean the room, as it wasn't worth it for 2 nights.
7.5 Good
Pros: Location is good, a lot of restaurants in the neighborhood.
Cons: The pillows are very thin and hard. Would recommend to ask for more at the reception. The hotel is also next to a train track.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very helpful and friendly. We took a while to find the hotel as we can't read Japanese and didn't have wifi to use live maps but some locals helped us find it! It is a ryokan so the beds are futons and the table is low - likewise breakfast is in a dining room with sitting on the floor for a Japanese breakfast. The room size was very good and the air con worked well for a very warm day in Sekura season.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Tamaru exceeded our expectations. We loved the whole experience. From the gracious hospitality, the beautiful room , and Japanese clothes, I would highly recommend them. It was also very close to the temple and attractions. The best memories I have are having the authentic Japanese breakfast in the morning and soaking in a traditional onsen. It was a wonderful experience. I would stay there again
Cons: The only drawback to the hotel is it’s not very close to the train station. It is NOT within walking distance. It would take as least 28 to 30 minutes by walking .

Pros: The traditional Japanese style house was extremely well-maintained. Our room was spacious and the balcony gave us a beautiful view of the neighborhood street; the futon beds were very comfortable as well. The breakfast was delicious and they have a nice selection of books in the kitchen/bar area for you. The staff were very friendly and we enjoyed our stay! If you are looking to avoid the tourists in Nara Park, the neighborhood has cute shops, cafes, and restaurants scattered about (and deer).
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Cute little place to stay. Feels very homely. Has a nice bar where you can have a sake tasting. Great staff and good location. Great breakfast.
Cons: You need to pay extra to for everything, towels, breakfast and bikes were not included. Roomrate was cheap though and costs are not excessive. Breakfast is defs worth the 600 yen

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location (2 minute walk to the park and Naramachi town), the house is an original old house refurbished to be a guesthouse and the staff (Akie) and the cafe that serve delicious breakfast and good sake :)
Cons: An old house means creaking floors :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A super friendly guesthouse, perfect location in a cute neighbourhood. Room was good size and very clean. Also more quiet than I’d expected considering it’s in a japanese house.
Cons: Nothing!

Pros: You cannot beat the location of the Nara Hotel. It's perfect for those wanting to see the main sights of the city. The staff are very attentive and helpful.
Cons: On the morning we checked out, they didn't seem overly thrilled to store our three suitcases for us while we did a final visit to the park before our departure.

Pros: Old world charm, lovely room , great location and shuttle bus to stations
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very comfortable, clean, friendly, great location.
Cons: All good!!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice historic hotel with lots of charm close to Nara park. Free shuttle to and from the train station. A la carte breakfast with table service. Excellent service and very nice staff.
Cons: The bathroom was rather small with very little space to put things.
2.5 Mediocre
Cons: Not at all at a normal standard
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The location of the hotel is perfect just next to the park of Nara which is very convenient. The hotel and room has an old style feeling which is charming.
Cons: The windows weren't soundproofed enough so I could hear the loud noise of the cars on the road just under the windows, which was very annoying, and the walls were so thick that I could hear the television and the people speaking in the room next door.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: As it was low season, we were kindly offered to upgrade to a better room because it was unoccupied and they thought we’d be more comfortable. The room was very spacious, clean and we gladly paid the small difference for the upgrade. They had a common area on our floor with vending machines. Very well placed in regards to the park. Very helpful and kind staff.
Cons: As it is an awesome location in regards to the park, it’s a bit far from the station if you’re carrying big bags.
7.0 Good
Pros: Fantastic location, very helpful staff, tiny room but we had booked the cheapest option, knowing it was v small so this was no issue for us, good bathroom, bonus to have a kitchen to use and to be able to rent bikes. Excellent price for the cheapest rooms!
Cons: Futon was the thinnest we have used in Japan... very uncomfortable! Earplugs are recommended as the walls between rooms were very thin and eyemask recommended as there was a bright light right outside our window.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff was amazing, very friendly and helpful with questions throughout my stay. The location next to the park was very convenient as my conference was located in the International Forum and it was also very close to many tourist attractions and food options.
Cons: A small breakfast option would have been nice, but I knew this coming in. The provided mini-fridge allowed me to buy coffee and food at the local convenience stores.
6.7 Good
Pros: Great location near the conference center.
Cons: There were lots of stains and the bedskirts were really filthy.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great. Clean, comfortable, spacious. Amazing location. Bathrooms and rooms super nice and super clean. What a nice place
Cons: The beds are pretty thin, and the pillows also

Pros: Nice location, friendly staff, great little café/noodlebar just across the street
Cons: Beds not very comfortable, carpet on the floors, a bit too expensive
9.6 Excellent
Cons: Only negative was no elevator.
7.9 Good
Pros: Location and ambience if the property. Staff were very polite and helpful
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Good value for economy-minded families. Staff were very kind and helpful.
Cons: Location a little bit away from the main attractions of Nara. Designed for Japanese-speakers. Many things were not translated into English (or any other language). But we could figure things out, thanks to English skills of friendly staff.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: It was a very nice experience. They provided us with anything we needed. The rooms were very clean. The location is perfect, near the beautiful Nara park. There is also a very small public bath with one mini bath tub. (It is not an Onsen,so don’t get confused! ) I recommend to rent a bike next to the station and move around with it, Nara is a paradise!
5.8 Okay
Pros: Not much, run down, but good size room. On circular bus route.
Cons: Long way from restaurants. Very Japanese breakfast, nothing at all western available, no eggs.
6.7 Good
Pros: Location of hotel is right by bus stop. I thought it was closer to the park but when you realise the size of the park it is a fair walk to explore on foot. the bus works fine though.
Cons: Nice clean room but very stark (with woodchip papered walls painted white some time ago) no ambience or comfort Staff very friendly and helpful but not strong in English Breakfast is Japanese style, cant even get a slice of bread I booked through Booking.com and when we were there we found several 5 star hotels, with vacancies that I could have got for the same price. By comparison this hotel is very mediocre. I was very disappointed that the web site threw this hotel up and a load of 2 star Ryoken's with shared facilities when there were lots of much better hotels available that we would have felt were better value for money. I will be more wary when using Booking.com in future
5.8 Okay
Pros: Nothing special.
Cons: No western breakfast at all, all Japanese ingredients.
