Top tips for renting a car at Puerto Vallarta Ordaz airport

  • While you might consider other forms of ground transportation to the city center, renting a Puerto Vallarta Ordaz Airport (PVR) car provides an easy, private, and comfortable means of getting around Puerto Vallarta. Taxis and buses come at significantly cheaper rates, but none gives you the liberty and smooth ride to various POIs like a rental car. Besides, a car rental at Puerto Vallarta Ordaz Airport lets you select your preferred car based on your travel needs.
  • Although Puerto Vallarta is a big coastal city with an extensive road network, driving in the city is relatively easy and safe. The traffic laws in Mexico require drivers to steer on the far right side of the road, with the left lane designated for passing/overtaking. Additionally, you must be on the right-hand-side lane to make a left turn, which can take some time to get used to.
  • Unless you plan to make long trips (more than 300 miles), you won’t need an international driving permit as the Mexican traffic laws recognize a U.S. driver’s license. To drive safely, you need to understand speed limits in the city. Unless indicated otherwise, the speed limit of major highways is 110 km/h (68 mph), which drops to 100 km/h (62 mph) when leaving or entering the city, 70 km/h (43 mph) in built-up areas, 80 km/h (50mph) on avenues, 60 km/h (37 mph) on streets, and 10 km/h in residential areas and parking lots. That said, you need to drive under different speed limits when approaching certain zones. For example, where the speed limit is set at 50 km/h (30 mph) on highways, you are not supposed to exceed 40 km/h (25 mph) when approaching school zones.
  • Wondering whether you should refuel your tank when returning the car? Your car rental will always offer you the option for a prepay refill, or you can choose not to refill it. The former allows you to cater to full-tank charges during pickup, which alleviates additional fuel costs and will enable you to drive around over an extended period. If you choose not to refill the tank to the same level you found it, your car rental at Puerto Vallarta Ordaz Airport will charge you for the used fuel.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars at Puerto Vallarta Ordaz airport for $14 or less
  • Book your rental car at Puerto Vallarta Ordaz airport at least 9 weeks before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about renting a car at Puerto Vallarta Ordaz airport

  • Where are car rental operators located at Puerto Vallarta Ordaz Airport?

When you get to the Arrivals Terminal Hall, head to the car rental counters following the "Baggage Claim" signs. Once you’re there, you’ll see the vehicle rental counters next to the baggage carousels. The car rental facility lies at Carretera Vallarta-Tepic KM 75 and houses various counters by renowned rental companies. Other rental operators are located near the airport, and you’ll need to board your specific agency’s courtesy shuttles to access the off-airport rental operators.

  • Can I cover my Puerto Vallarta Ordaz Airport car rental liability using my credit card insurance?

The issue of whether or not you can use your credit card insurance for your car rental at Puerto Vallarta Ordaz Airport varies from one operator to another. Generally, most types of U.S. credit card insurance are accepted in Mexico, but if your rental company insists on mandatory car insurance, their request supersedes your credit card policy. Many onsite rental companies sell renters their own auto insurance, which is typically pocket-friendly and can save you money, considering the premium rental charges at flight hubs.

  • What are the best places to park a rental car in Puerto Vallarta?

Getting parking space in Puerto Vallarta can be challenging because there’s limited parking space with high demand, especially after the rush hour begins. Therefore, we recommend that you find a parking garage in the outskirts of the downtown area. Alternatively, you can leverage the parking lots at various shopping malls and commercial centers. For instance, large shopping malls have designated locations within the town with free parking spaces. To access other parking lots, head to Costco, off Av Fluvial Vallarta, or the Soriana parking lot situated close to the Marina Terminal.

  • How much does it cost to rent a car at Puerto Vallarta Ordaz airport?

On average a rental car at Puerto Vallarta Ordaz airport costs $25 per day.

  • Which car rental companies will pick you up at Puerto Vallarta Ordaz airport?

Car rental companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Puerto Vallarta Ordaz airport to off-airport locations include Budget, Alamo, Avis, MEXRENTACAR , Economy Rent a Car, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Hertz, Europcar, Payless, and Sixt.

They are crooks! They pretended to find a new 1" scratch on a hidden part of the awning over the back window and we are still fighting with them to get my $700 deposit back. And, at checkout - we were forced to listen to a condominium presentation begging us to go to a 90 minute showing way out of the way. When trying to resolve the "scratch" issue - the employees were rude, short, and did not listen. I truly feel they were taking advantage of the "gringos".

The car was not in the best condition, engine light on and multiple areas with damage. No handles on the boot and filling cap release. Took almost an hour to get the car once I got to the rental shop. Was charged additional insurance even though I have worldwide cover and then an extortionate warranty of 1333 dollars which because I was using a debit card I had to pay an additional non refindable 66 dollars. 2 bars of fuel on the gauge. A rental that started at 57dollars ended up costing over 200. The hidden fees are a joke and I will not be in a hurry to rent a car from this company ever again

When I picked up the car I had an unexpected $430.00 mandatory insurance premium charged. I bought insurance though KAYAK and was charged the extra at the airport. Staff did were not very interested in inspecting the car when I picked it but went over it with a fine tooth comb when I dropped it off. They were especially interested in the under carriage as the speed bumps are very high in some places and the under carriage will drag going into their parking lot. Not a very welcoming experience and I felt like they were trying to not to reimburse the 35,000 past deposit that they charged on to of the extra insurance. Never have been treated that way in any country renting a car and I for years I rented weekly.

Prices were quoted in CAD and were asked in USD at a way worse rate than what I anticipated, and with no internet on the spot to verify and show my reservation I had no choice but to accept and go with whatever they were saying. The car was in rough shape and not particularly clean, with the radio inoperative and bits ands broken inside, and at drop off they charged me 190$ for a cleaning fee because there were some dog hair on the floor in the back. Overall when I should have paid 425$ Cad I ended un paying over 1100$ cad. I should have stuck with the competitor’s rental, this was way overpriced and will definitely not recommend to anyone.

They charged almost $100 more than quoted. The car was not ready. They made me wait and watch a guy add an entire litre of oil. Was 45 minutes to pick up the car. When I saw my credit card bill after the drop off they billed me $10,851.00 CDN for a 7 hour car rental. I have been trying to get someone to help reverse this for 5 days now. This is not a fun vacation for me.

I reserved a 7 passenger as we are a family of 6.. when I got there they had record of my reservation but no available 7 passenger vehicle.. they wanted me to take a 5 passenger! So I went to Eurocar next door, they price matched and had me in a 7 passenger in 10 mins. I will not use Hertz again

The Price tha Kayak says and the price they give on the spot, it is not the same. How come can I get an 181$ US rate for a week here and on the spot the agent tells me it's 560$ US with insurance. I think I am supposed to be aware of the full price in advance, before getting there on the spot the day of. Where are the hidden fees? Or is the agent trying to rip us out? Something it is not right here, renting a car it is not supposed to be an awful experience, and every time it causes me anxiety cause it is never the right price you negotiated. Never coming back!

By far the worst rental car experience of my life. We were charged much more the the rate advertised on Hotwire and the “insurance” charge made my total 3x more than what I found online. $360 USD for a 2 day rental, MORE than I paid for an entire week rental with a different agency in the area the week before. On top of that, the agents tried to charge us an extra $1000 pesos to clean out a little dog hair that was in the car for “extra work” they would need to do. The manager tried to negotiate with us when we argued, and lowered it to $500 pesos, as if it was some kind of deal that we had to negotiate. There was nothing about dog hair in the contract, and when we pointed that out, the agent pointed to a different section about smoking in the car, claiming that it also applied to dog hair. Anyway, we didn’t want to pay this absurd fee so We took the car and cleaned it with OUR HANDS and it took 10 minutes. We read terrible reviews online but decided to risk it since it was only a 2 day rental. It was way overpriced, a horrible experience, and honestly the whole company seems like a giant scam. Knowing the reviews, we were cautious on everything: we brought the far back a day early, full tank of gas, got the 100% insurance coverage, and they still tried to rip off a client like us. Hertz should be ashamed to be associated with this company, and they should also be investigated for fraud, based on our experience and others I’ve read. I will never be renting from Hertz again and I will be sharing this review with everyone I know.

Clerk did not explain the insurance policy at all and we ended up paying double for the rental because they did not allow us to use our credit card insurance. Really bad experience.

This was a Hertz/Dollar combo place so keep that in mind but that is how it goes at the PVR airport. I was coerced very strongly to buy additional insurance even though I already had adequate coverage for what is required. The rental price shown at the counter was higher than booking by $30 or so and attempts to demonstrate were summarily ignored.

Car was fine. I asked for third party liability only and only noticed later that they had added another insurance for $280 pesos a day for theft which I did not request.

I could not get my rental because they were saying that I needed to get an other insurances with them. Their reason was that it was the popular season, so my insurance with my credit card was not doing the job. Even if it was clearly written that it was alright and that if I took an insurance with another company, it would cancel the one that I took. Also, the insurance that they asked cost 10k$… So, we had to make phone calls for about 3 hours to try to make them understand, and we finished having a refound. I do not recommend taking a reservation with American car rental in Mexico, it was a real trouble.

They tried to add 700$ to my original bill of 125$ for insurance and refused to let me take the car with my own insurance as stated and refused to issue a refund when I didn’t end up getting the car because of the HUGE jump in price.

They asked for 300 usd extra on top of the price i payed online. They wouldn’t let me leave the car lot with the car without paying. The ad said there might be extra cost if drop off was a different location. But this extra cost was for nothing. I contacted priceline to get help but they said all they could do was cancel the rental which would have left me and my family stranded without a car. I am asking you to pay the difference as you are responsible for not showing the true price on your system.

I didn't even end up renting the car. When I got to the location, they told me I needed mandatory insurance, even if my credit card offered it as a benefit. They gave me 3 "plans" that offered less coverage based on price: $130/day, $100/day, and $60/day. I rented this car for ~$20 day, and now they want to charge me AT LEAST $60/day for insurance? My sister and I walked out of the location and we walked into a Hertz to rent from them. I will NEVER rent a car from KAYAK or Rentalcars.com again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Serious credibility issues for both of your firms.
