The insurance we reserved was a joke. It was 10 dollars a day on the Kayak site only to find out when we got to the Hertz facility they wanted to charge more for insurance than the entire car rental price. We had 2 dents on the car that I told the hertz guy about. He saw them and agreed, but didn't add them to the damage sheet! So, at the other end, they are trying to charge us for dents that I have pictures of on my phone! The language barrier was a joke. My flight was delayed. Alamo was aware of my flight number because it was notified by reservation and they are at the airport. Alamo closed and I left without transportation at the airport. My rate for a rental in DR was surprisingly affordable when I booked online. I went ahead and purchased the insurance made available during booking. When I arrived at the rental counter, additional insurance was required with the rental, regardless of the policy I'd purchased (mistakenly believing it was part of Alamo's a la carte options). So I had a useless insurance policy and the required Alamo insurance more than doubled the online quote. Bastards.Budget

The car was not ready when we got there and we had to be shuttled to another location to pick it up. I had purchased additional insurance on Expedia that I was then told when I arrived at Budget that that insurance was not valid for Budget nor in the Dominican Republic at all, so then I had to purchase another whole insurance. The person assisting me was rude and argumentative. He had me signing papers without even telling me what I was signing for nor what the price was going to be that I was committing/signing to. When I asked him the price he pitched a big fight and acted very immature and like I was an inconvenience. The car I got had tons and tons of dents all over it so I then had to make sure that they saw every single one so that I did not get scammed even more.Economy Rent a Car

Apparently theres an insurance and other fees that are not mentioned when booking that is required to rent a car. They photo copy your ID, passport, and credit Card too. Reservation made sept 2016 for the ONLY vacation I get all year at Christmas. Confirmed six times - even before leaving LAX! Arrived and was told "sorry lady we have no cars". Without all the horrible details here's a f ew: - 3.5 hours begging/crying at counter they did not care although my reservation was acknowledged. - Christmas day, traveling solo and disabled, they did not care. - Supervisor got on phone, he did not care. - I had nowhere to go and NO transportation. - 3.5 hours later "we found a car it will be $800" THIEVES AND LIARS. I witnessed FIVE other renters on either side of the Thrifty rental counter told the same thing.Cons:
Learned from MANY locals, "they do it all the time". - my reservation was for 16 days $300. I would NEVER give that country one dime out of my own pocket although the USA has given them HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of dollars to rebuild. Their culture is deplorable. I rented a car in Punta cana for 13 days and when I got there around 2 pm when I go to pick my car up there wasn't any available. Not even that, before I left for my trip I confirmed it and they told me my car was available. Don't know how that works?? And to end the story short they triple the price? The car drove nice, but was a stiff ride in the back seat for two adults. We were able to get four adult and 6+ bags. The air conditioning worked well. It had enough power to manuver when needed.Cons:
The Hyundai Accent is a small "Full size" car. Very short leg space in the back seat. The outside of the car was clean enough, but the inside of the windshield was very bad. Refracted the sunlight to the point we had to stop and find water and towels to scrub the inside clean. I expected the required liablity insurance to be extra, but the required ups and extras almost doubled the original quoted cost. I was very nervious driving, fearing someone might hit me and we were warned of the consequences.4.4 Mediocre

The car was smaller than what I reserved and there were no other options so we squeezed in and didn't have a very safe situation. Still no car, called everyday and still no car until day 5 of trip and then offered a compact (not suitable for 4 adults and baggage) and asked to come to airport to collects. There was no information given to me at booking or before the trip to inform me the Dollar location is miles away from the airport or that i should call Dollar for a ride from the airport (no organized shuttle). Finally got there after lots of hassles. Then Dollar did not have the 7 person van I reserved and put five of us in a small SUV (biggest they had). The 2 friends we were to transport got a ride with another group at their added expense. The SUV we got was mechanically sound and clean. Staff was apologetic but offered no explanation about the poor communication or lack of a reserved van.3.6 Poor
