Ranch House at Southfield - Southfield - Building
2
8.9 Excellent (122 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Welcome! I have a cozy ranch style house that is convenient to almost everything. Pharmacies, restaurants, Target, TJ Maxx, etc. It is located approx. 25 minutes from Detroit, 5 minutes from Birmingham, and very close to Berkley and Royal Oak, as well as the Zoo. My home is also very convenient for medical residents at Beaumont hospital Royal Oak and others. I am more than willing to make suggestions as it regards activities around the city and surrounding areas. I hope to see you soon!
7.5 Good
Pros: both were fine
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is not a "B&B" or motel in the ordinary sense of those words. It is a 3-bedroom house in a quiet residential suburban neighborhood--about two miles west of Woodward Avenue and about three blocks north of 12 Mile Road. The owner has her own private apartment on the lower level of the house; guests occupy the three bedrooms on the main-floor, ground level. So "shared bath" means simply you're sharing the bathroom on the same hallway as the three bedrooms--like any family. Not a problem. Because it is an ordinary house in a normal, quiet neighborhood, there is no sign on the property, so be sure you have the house number with you. And because the owner is the hostess, and she has a life, you do need to respect that she needs to know your estimated time of arrival. Be sure to ask her how to lock the front door; she showed me how to unlock it by combination from the outside, but it locks with a deadbolt, and you don't have a key for that. The bedroom and bathroom are spic-and-span clean. The owner offers her ample living room to relax in, and offers her kitchen for cooking (by the guests). Cereals and eggs are provided; if you stayed long, you'd be able to buy your own food for the refrigerator. Some guests stay for many months. Parking is limited to the single-lane driveway; parking on the street overnight is prohibited. So you simply have to talk with the owner and other guests to see what order everybody leaves in the morning, and park accordingly.
Cons: No complaints at all.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location, price, value for the money, use of kitchen, gazebo.
Cons: Offer individual cereal servings rather than a box of cereal that everyone uses at will.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The beds are very comfortable. The house is very well designed and quite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Clem and up to date
Cons: Nothing
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: Poor communication regarding parking. Bed was extremely uncomfortable.
Cons: Nothing
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Clean
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very nice people. Very clean over all, even under some little renovation. THere was not exactly breakfast, but coffee, milk chocolate, bread, cheese, juice, yogourt available self service. Comfortable bed. Warm even under 7F and snow outside.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was very clean and very comfortable and beautiful flowers in front of the house.
Cons: I didn’t like how close the houses were together.

Pros: The facilities are great and the breakfast is excellent.
Cons: Some light construction while they are renovating some rooms. Limited dining selections in Nomad Grill.
9.2 Excellent
Cons: I left my phone charger in the room and the staff provided no assistance in helping me retrieve it. I informed the staff in the morning and they did not allow me to enter the room I had checked out of. They also allowed another guest to check into that room and still had not retrieve my phone charger.

Pros: Great value Nice room Comfortable bed Good shower
Cons: Front desk check-in guy seemed a bit unfriendly Stains and visible aging in some wall corners

Pros: Very comfortable room. Excellent customer service!
Cons: No refrigerator in room. Odd this day and age...
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly employees. Restaurant attached.
Cons: A/C unit was very loud when compressor kicked on.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The environment, how clean it was, and how friendly the staff was
Cons: It was nothing I didn't like
7.5 Good
Pros: Room was small but comfortable. Bed, wifi and shower were fine. I loved the midcentury vibe of the round tower. There were also a LOT of elevators so there was never a wait. Lobby was nice.
Cons: AC unit was incredibly loud. Shower had a weird shelf that was loose and in the way; things just slid right off it. It was sort of odd that there was a nice chair that neither faced the TV nor had a lamp that you could read by, which was a little useless. Breakfast was extra; I passed on that. I asked for a rate to extend my stay by one more weekday and they quoted me a crazy amount that was much more than I was paying and also much more than the online rate, so I passed on that too.
6.0 Good
Pros: Close to freeway.
Cons: The bathroom sink drained really slow and there were bath towels left in the dresser from previous guesst. I asked that both get attention and was told they would but never did. Parking was also limited if you get there late.
5.4 Okay
Cons: The room had an obvious water leak at some point, smelled moldy and the room was very humid
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, it’s right by the highway and close to downtown Detroit
Cons: The breakfast buffet wasn’t worth paying extra for, but if it’s included in your booking I’d say give it a try anyways.

Cons: Great location with wonderful views

Pros: The entire facility was very clean. Tracy even checked on us to find out how our stay was going. Thank you Tracy. The staff was very accommodating. The breakfast was very good. It lasted until 10:30am, so you don't have to wake up with the chickens to eat. It was close to the zoo and the Detroit Princess Cruise ship. The whole area was nice. We felt safe. The price was incredibly reasonable. They have a concession stand to purchase snacks. There is coffee, tea, hot cocoa fresh fruit and fresh baked cookies out all day. I loved the vanity with lights and a comfy chair for me to do my makeup. There were lots of outlets in the room for our various devices to charge. It was quiet. The bed was comfortable. I slept great. I would stay here again.
Cons: The bathroom and the room was small, but it was very clean.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Hotel staff were friendly and very accommodating. Location was very for my visit.
Cons: Hallways seemed dark. Room decor was also dark. Breakfast was mediocre.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I love the room size. I enjoyed the breakfast bar.
Cons: I did not like the hidden charge that they don’t mention until you get to the hotel. If you book the room on line then you still should know about the entire check in process. Meaning if you pay cash price will be an extra 100 and if card then add extra 25 or plus to the price.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: They worked with us and gave us free tickets to the Detroit Zoo which was the reason for our stay.
Cons: Nothing
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Excellent customer service. Very friendly and responsive to any requests. Kitchen staff is also very pleasant and friendly. Facilities were fine--I used the workout room and all the equipment worked well. Sleeping is good because it is very quiet especially when you have a room on the back side (facing back parking lot) Rooms are a nice large size and the beds are comfortable. They have water infused with lemon for the offering all day long. Have stayed here often and will continue to in the future.
Cons: My only issue (which I mentioned to the front desk) is that my air conditioning was NOT working the entire time. We set it to 60F initially because the room was very hot (and had a foul odor) but the temp did not change the entire time we were there. We would leave and return and it was still hot with the unpleasant odor. Even though the setting showed 60F, the temp was not moving in the room and was more like 78F. So it was uncomfortable sleeping but other than that all was good.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: free breakfast, kid friendly
Cons: no
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great pool
Cons: They didn’t offer shuttle service to an event that was less than a mile away

Cons: The bed was too soft which lead to a back ache.

Cons: N/a
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Worth the price. King suite is very spacious and clean.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Yea the breakfast was very good room was very clean and beds were very good
Cons: Really nothing I can think of
2.5 Mediocre
Pros: The TV swivels so if your on couch you could see from there. That's about it!
Cons: The hotel has a old smell. The bathroom could be a lot bigger. The decor was dark the whole hotel could use a update. I think our king suite honestly should have been cheaper than $140. We only stayed at this hotel because friends already booked here wanted to be in same hotel. But there were cheaper and nicer hotels surrounding should have went with those options instead.

Pros: Bed was comfortable and breakfast buffet outstanding.
Cons: Had a little trouble getting the room temp adjusted low enough for sleeping.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All very easy and fabulously helpful staff, especially Elaine! She got me upgraded as the first night I had a TV addict next door up all night being loud. Blissfully quiet after that. The location is great--you can walk to everything in Birmingham, restaurants, bars, lovely shopping.
Cons: Everything was swell.
5.4 Okay
Pros: Updated room, friendly breakfast host, convenient location
Cons: Aside from be chased out of the room by a shower alarm that went off when my hair was full of shampoo, only to be told by the staff they they were doing all they could by pushing the rest button but not calling me to let me know... the automatic front door barely functioned
7.0 Good
Pros: Location. Updated rooms
Cons: The checkin process was a mess. Took a really long time. Front desk staff was very slow. Then the 1st room we were assigned keys didn't work. Had to keep going back to desk until they realized the battery on the door was broken. Had to move rooms again!

Cons: The AC didn't work in our room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Room was clean and comfortable. We liked all the options for breakfast and that it came with the room.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Front staff was very friendly and helpful. They gave a great recommend for a quick dinner location. There are many $$$$ restaurants in the area but we wanted something less expensive but better than fast food. Breakfast had great choices and was very clean and well stocked Nice that they had a mini fridge and coffee maker in the room. Great choices of pillows. They are marked firm /soft for your choice Location was quiet throughout the night.
Cons: Not really a complaint but getting into and out of the hotel location is a little tricky during rush hours due to the way the driveway is situated and the street traffic Also the beds were a little worn down on the edges where people usually sit. Once you were in the middle of the bed it was fine.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is great and super convenient to downtown Birmingham. We are able to walk everywhere. The breakfast room was really lovely and had a lot of good options from super health yogurt and fruit to indulgent biscuits and sausage gravy.
Cons: not really anything.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: The full breakfast included, the bed, the hotel room and facilities
Cons: The room was really nice ...but the bathroom too small ..didn’t know how to turn on the fireplace .. door at room 213 was very hard to unlock .. also l personally drive there 3 weeks in advance in Jan 4, 2917 and paid for 2 rooms in cash .. the bi-level room was for my daughter and son in law who was married that day and my room so l could easily handle any problems or concerns .. had them put on the computer that if they have any problems that they were to contact me since the rooms where in my name and they were starting there honeymoon that night so l did not want them disturbed .. well after they were married and had the dinner reception they go to the hotel to get their key to go to their room and my daughter and new son in law have to call me because the hotel staff is asking for payment and so l have to talk to my daughter, son in law and staff over the phone telling them that l paid for Two rooms in cash .. the whole experience was totally embarrassing .. l let them know that l have the receipts to both rooms.showing thT they are paid in full ..they finally figure out whatever the problem is and hive them their key.. the whole day went beautiful until they go to the hotel and get embraced and are forced to call me and then l am totally embarrassed and humiliated.. this was not a good start for our first stay when we travel a lot .. the amount that l paid for both rooms was not worth the embrassemrmt and humiliation .. then they gave me a door key that wasn’t unlocking the door .. l had to try to use it 8-10 times in a row to try to get in and the reason l did not go backk to the office quickly to get a new.key card was because we were in the back .. it was cold .. and it was 2:30 in the morning

Pros: The location was great, staff very friendly, rooms were fairly clean and beds super comfy.
Cons: The only negative about my experience was I didn’t know the property is currently under construction. I checked in on a Friday and out on Monday. I was told that the construction wouldn’t be going on over the weekend, however my nap was interrupted on Saturday by drills. Although it didn’t last long, it wasn’t very relaxing. I would give 5 stars had there been no construction.

Pros: The hotel was fine but the noise was excessive. I did not sleep well due to loud music, dogs barking, people fighting. Terrible!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Cleanliness,staff,location,breakfast
Cons: Beds were small
8.3 Excellent
Pros: VERY CLEAN! I loved everything else about this hotel with tgeI only wish I had the funds available to stay a week!
Cons: A problem with the TV. I called the front desk and reported it inoperable, the lady said to make sure it was plugged in all the way - it was. But still nothing. Then i looked at the input on the remote and HDMI port on the television. The cord was switched and to the wrong input. I literally had to move the very heavy dresser out to access this. I strained a muscle in my back and subsequently head alot of pain. Definitely need more light switches and overhead lighting. Also received a call on the phone, and when I called the front desk she acted like I was crazy! Also rooms were a little bit noisy, doors were slamming and woke me up very very early. Another thing is the pool. Unfortunately, I was only able to use it for for 20 mins. Their hours being open at the pool are not very accomodating. If you check in late you MUST infringe on you'r sleep time to swim. And swimming was the biggest reason I chose this hotel. I know this may be a safety issue but it should be open more for the season's end.

4.6 Okay
Cons: The air conditioner was blowing 2 feet from the bed directly on whoever slept on the side near it. The air smelled stale coming from it and it was very loud as well. It cycled every 10 minutes waking up both of us. Turning it off made the room uncomfortably hot. We got very little sleep which ruined our work day.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice beds and room was very clean.
Cons: Bit noisy from traffic near by..breakfast could be better...bathroom vanity bit small and too low

4.2 Okay
Pros: The bed was comfy and clean
Cons: Our room smelled of weed, went to front desk and all they did was hand my husband a can of air freshener. Next day our AC stopped working on one of hottest days of the year. Pool was dirty and had scrap metal in the bottom of it and the hot tub did not work at all.
2.9 Mediocre
Pros: The room was comfortable
Cons: There were kids (teens) running in hall way. When I called front desk after 12am to complain, he imply it was his kids. There were a group of 7 of us that had to be up by 4 am to travel 13 hours and the noise continued for a while. When we asked for a discount the next morning they stated we needed to talk to booking.com. I do not think we got our full value when one of our nights were interrupted by noise. This was on top of me asking to pay the same rate for all of the rooms since all three were the same size and was redirected to booking.com and when I did reach out to you all no one seemed interested in helping. This was a bad booking choice by me.
