JAL is a good flight to visit Far East, especially Thailand for a discounted fares:-)
The airline wanted to charge me an additional $108.00 to check my second bag despite their policy stating that the first two checked bags are free. In order to not miss my flight, I had to leave one bag. Thankfully, I had enough room in my other bag and carry on to accommodate all my things.
The service of this flight was wonderful, I love all of them
The flight crew are great, boarding and staff at gate are meticulous and orderly. Comfort is good in economy, I'm 6ft and had decent room. The food is ok , it's a lot of little things that were fresh and different but not really a meal. My language is limited to English but for the most part I was able to communicate my needs thankfully to their understanding of English. I would fly this airline again I would think about the one step upgrade from economy if it was a busy flight especially over 5hrs .
The number of flights available from the west coast US to southeast Asia has been severely reduced to the covid pandemic so flyers do not have all the options as in the past. So I reluctantly flew on JAL despite all the negative reviews [Spoiler: the reviews were correct]. Although I was pleased with the efficiency of the flight, the sincerity of the crew, and the high quality meals, the substandard business class accommodations made the whole flight uncomfortable. The chair was small, cramped, lumpy, and offered little privacy. It by no means compares to business class on China Eastern or Singapore Airlines -- the groups I usually fly. JAL will need to significantly upgrade business class if I consider this flight in the future.
Overall, very good trip. I would definitely fly with Japan Airlines again. Food choices are Japanese-centric, flying back to Los Angeles after being in Asia two weeks, something different would have been nice. But overall, very good.

Every Service - Snack, Drinks, Lunch, Dinner, Coffee/Tea, Second and Third rounds of drinks includes a cold towel to wipe your face and hands and most important, trash is collected promptly EVERY single time. WOW. I noticed that Flight Attendants take notes on sleeping passengers for every major meal service, and they take the time to revisit those customers when awake to check they might have wanted to be fed. I also noticed that the crew has special double sided tape to pickup crumbs and spills in the aisles so grime is not tracked into the carpet. Dont be surprized to see a flight attendant cruising the aisle after dinner with a soft cooler full of small vanilla Hagen Daz cups..."
Cons: "We flew from Bangkok to Washington Dulles with a connection in Tokyo. Snow in Japan caused crew shifts to max out and ultimately a dramatic change in flight departure. (Guaranteeing a missed connection) This caused multiple downstream challenges. 1. Original flight was scheduled for 00:30. (Half Past Midnight), rescheduled flight was scheduled for 12:30 (Half Past Noon) For Americans unused to a 24 hour clock, this made emails From ANA very difficult to wrap your mind around. Was it a typo? What happens when you miss your connection? (Turns out weather delays do NOT result in accommodations or meals being provided) Rescheduled flight should have been for 1231 with (AM/PM in Parentheses) 2. For passengers who spent their vacation/trip near the equator, the prospect of spending the night in snowbound Tokyo was simply not addressed in the cancellation email. The better option was to stay in your original point of origin and make the connection in one day, but email has NO telephone number for passengers to call to make these arrangements. (We ended up calling a toll California telephone number to be sure we got an English speaking agent) 3. Many SE Asian departing cities have a crazy baggage weight policy that allows for Two bags of 25 Kilos each , but if you have a single bag that weights 32 Kilos, you must pay excess baggage. Although the policy may NOT be specific to ANA, there are hundreds of folks of all nationalities repacking suitcases on the floor of the airport, to try to meet the regulations. As a traveler I understand this, but as an ANA customer it makes no sense, especially when the ticket agent cannot charge the overage to a credit card at the ticket counter. Instead sending you to a different location then waiting for you to return with a receipt. Its a huge scam and ANA can do better communicating the rules to passengers via email or their web site. Nothing starts a long trip off worse than arguments over arcane rules. 4. Changing a return flight arrangement as a result of weather happens at the last moment, but seat assignments apparently could not keep up. I would rather NOT fly than face a center seat in coach for 14 hours. I cannot explain what happened, but repeated attempts at advance check in showed NO assigned seats available, the ticket and gate agents could not improve on this, but BOTH flights ended up having empty seats and in the end we stressed for nothing. ANA must be able to do better, improving their IT systems to make advance seat assignments possible no matter how challenging the problem of "equipment" and other changes in the face of a canceled flight."

They normally only allow early boarding of young children, but we need extra time as I have 2 children to organise and my daughters sight dictates that i have to assist her. Other passengers were not impressed. I would like the airlines to take the initiative to have all children boarded early as if we board with everyone else, the aisles will be blocked as my children try to get organised."

Bangkok airport needs a redesign to make it more accommodating for passengers with long layovers between flights. It needs a better selection of restaurants, stores and rest rooms near the departure gates. It also needs a shuttle or other transport system to help passengers transit the long distances between gates in different concourses.
Crew were too focused on being efficient and forgot how to relax and be nice. They march up and down, bark out commands at people but say "please" and "thank you". Words don't make up for the tone and the way they do things.
Not a fan of given an iPad to watch movies. Trouble some to hold/place and eat.

Singapore airlines has resumed after Covid selling premium services but not opened lounges to cater for the demand you cannot get a seat in their lounges and social distancing is non existent. I wouldn't pay for services you don't get so be aware.

It seems the airline has been mismanaged or has had political restraints despite always being full. I was lucky to purchase the last roundtrip flight LAX HKG BKK before the online bookings were pulled for the LAX route. Hence, my flight to HKG and the return to LAX were empty flights, which is such a loss for an already dying airline. The crew were still polite and hardworking unlike US airlines."

Probably not a long time if one is not traveling with a thirsty 6 year old. Boarding in BKK was agonizingly slow. Deplaning in Hong Kong took way to long. Will pay more to take Cathay, BKK or Singapore next time."

Thus, I have my share of travel experiences: from poor to superb. This is my Hong Kong Airlines experience. Courteous and friendly crew. Nice but light snacks on late evening flight. Lunch was delicious and on the lighter side. Also, provided priority card in and out of the airport screening. Overall, excellent experience. Can compete with the top carriers in the world from my experience on a roundtrip travel to and from Hong Kong."
Cons: "HK Airlines refused to allow us to use the outbound until we appealed to a manager. The reason for our no show was the fault of Etihad. They did not notify HK evidently. Get it right people!"

Food was not very good for business class, was more in line with JAL, EVA, Korean or ANA econo class but again, for the price, no complaints. Great friendly service, quick boarding. Priority Pass didn't have a lounge in Manila but thankfully, Philippines Air had their own lounge with great food and drinks for 1st Class and Business class ticket holders. Plane from BKK to Manila was NICE and comfy, all latest technology with beautiful fully adjustable chairs that lay flat. Would fly with them again!"

Cons: "I have been a gluten-sensitive foodie for 7 years. I am not vegetarian. I still eat sugar, salt, spices, dairy, and fat. I have order a GF special meal for the past 3 or 4 trips I’ve flown but I always end up asking for one of the regular meals instead because the GF meals are SO awful. They are completely devoid of all salt, sauces, spices or any flavor, and are so bland that it’s like eating astronaut cardboard food. For example...the last flight I took (Manila-San Francisco), the regular meal options were a chicken sausage dish with some mashed potatoes and veggies, a wonderful colorful julienne vegetable salad, a flan pudding (GF by nature) and some bread with butter. The other option was a delicious smelling pork belly over rice (seriously some of the best pork belly I’ve ever had) and some veggies with the same sides. Everything was gluten-free except for the bread roll and looked much more colorful and fresher overall. By contrast, the GF “special” meal that I received was a plain chicken breast with no salt, steamed veggies that were overcooked and mushy to the point of colorless baby food, with no spices or sauces, a watered-down fruit salad, a rice cake with no butter and a banana instead of dessert. I was amazed at how bland and flavorless it was. Gluten-free does not mean sugar-free, low-fat, or dairy free. It simply means the absence of wheat flour. I still like sauces and spices. And I still like butter. A non-fruit dessert would have been nice. And since when does gluten-free mean flavor-free? I would have MUCH rather preferred the regular meal option with just a gluten-free rice cake substitute. Thank god they had extra regular meals for me to eat instead. Point being…if you’re not extreme celiac and just gluten-sensitive, I recommend ordering off the regular menu and just omitting the bread roll. The flavorless meal isn’t worth it!"

Also my wife was unable to get her seats confirmed in Thailand for comection in Manila to Vancouver which meant having to line up in the basement in Manila and then argue that we wanted our seats together for the long haul home."

The flight was - freezing. I turned my light on, no one came to me. I then went and found an attendent (2 different times) and discussed that it was very very cold. I asked to see if they had another blanket, they said no. They didn't do much to change the temperature. I watched for 15 minutes, and no one went to change it. Once they did, it didn't help the situation. Later I requested again, and similarly nothing happened. The food- terrible. Dried up hashbrowns, that were overcooked. Meat, I couldn't even eat."

Pros: "One of the flight attendants from my flight to Manila from Bangkok was very helpful in getting the ground crew to help me transfer from terminal 2 to terminal 3 by using the transfer bus. One of the taxi drivers wanted to take me for 800 pesos. But not only did I not have to deal with traffic on the street but be cause we were riding on the tarmac we saved a lot of time. Thanks to the helpful flight attendant."

Cons: "Of the four total flights, to include connections, Philippine Airlines was delayed on all legs. The delays were all after boarding and while sitting in plane. Delays ranged from 30 minutes to 75 minutes and all four flight delays were reported to be due to delays in getting baggage on the planes or getting the meals loaded on the planes according to the pilot's reports. Of note, on all four flights, the crew ran out of food before getting to our isle and had only one option remaining with no alternatives for those allergic to any portion of the meal. I would absolutely never recommend Philippine Airlines to anyone. The reduced cost of tickets was absolutely not worth the experience."
