We were nickled and dimed for bags. They also are trying to get you to pay to reserve seats out of fear you won't be able to sit with your friends (we did not pay and were able to sit together). Check-in was a nightmare; the Spirit staff was altogether unhelpful and it was evident from announcements they were so running so far behind people were at risk of missing flights. We only had to check bags and it was not clearly marked or indicated where the bag drop was located. The flight was listed as on time throughout the night however we left 1.5 hours after our scheduled departure time; Spirit never made any announcement about the delay and the board at the gate continued to read "on time".
Once on board though, the flight was uneventful, comfortable, and satisfactory.
Once I got to my 5 hour layover destination the gate was changed 3 times. Again, they charge for your first checked bag on an international flight as well as your carry on in addition to any tap water or drinks you would like on the flight. For an international flight these policies are unheard of. You're better off paying the $50 more and fly another airline because spirit is going to take that from you and then some!
I got from point A to point B safe but the customer service and organization of the airline was awful. We Ended up paying over $200 for our luggage (my husband and I ) because our luggage was 6 pounds over weight - 3 lbs each. We were fine on the scale at in the line but not at the counter. Under normal circumstances we would have taken some items out and stuck them in our carry on however the lines for spirit were out the door and we had to wait two hours to get through the check in line. Once in the line closer to the counter you could see why the line was moving so slow as there were multiple arguments and issues occurring. When we got to the counter the "manager" was in a screaming match with a customer using profanities and their were numerous children around. Everyone felt very uncomfortable. The only redeeming quality was 2 of the 4 flight attendants were very friendly. Next time we will pay the extra money for another flight where they don't charge you $3 for water or pay more for your luggage than your flight!
At check in, while checking my bag, the agent advised that since the flight wasn't full, and I wound have to claim my bag to transfer to an international flight, I could save some time by taking my bag on board. That worked out very well. I am very thankful for the good advice.
Great in flight crew, nice free snacks, good entertainment.
Gate personnel unfamiliar with the proper boarding sequence announcements and "phraseology" for proper understanding of which "group" of passengers board next. I have experienced this several times lately, at different locations ... sort of unusual.
