FAQs - booking Finland flights

  • Which airport in Finland should I fly into?

Finland is served by four major international airports, and it’s best to choose based on your travel itinerary. Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL) is Finland's primary international gateway, with extensive flight connections, making it ideal for further international travel. Oulu Airport (OUL) is excellent for accessing the northern regions. Turku Airport (TKU) serves the southwest, while Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) is perfect for exploring Lapland.

  • Are there direct flight options from New York to Finland?

If you leave from JFK Airport, you can fly nonstop into Helsinki (HEL). Iberia, American, Finnair, and British Airways operate direct flights along this route. If you plan to visit other cities, like Oulo (OUL), Turku (TKU), or Rovaniemi (RVN), your flight will likely have a stop in Helsinki first.

  • What travel documents do I need to travel to Finland?

As a U.S. citizen visiting Finland, you’ll need a passport with at least three months' validity beyond your planned departure and two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. You should have proof of a return ticket or onward travel from the country. In addition, you may be asked to show the purpose of your trip, accommodation details, evidence of financial means, and travel insurance coverage.

  • How can I make the flight from New York to Finland more comfortable?

For this long-haul flight, consider upgrading to a premium class for more comfort and convenience. In World Traveler Plus, the premium economy cabin on British Airways, you can enjoy more spacious seats in a quieter cabin, as well as complimentary bar service, an amenity kit, and priority boarding. It’s possible to upgrade on the day of travel, given that there is availability in the cabin.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from New York to Finland?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from New York to Finland.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from New York to Finland?

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from New York to Finland?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket. You could then fly from New York to Finland with an airline and back with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from New York to Finland?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying from New York to Finland up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Finland

  • When leaving New York, choosing John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) as your starting point will give you the broadest range of choices and even offer direct flights. Newark Airport (EWR) is a solid pick if you're looking for budget-friendly options; it's well-connected, too. So whether you're after variety or affordability, both airports have you covered.
  • Scandinavian Airlines provides affordable flights to travelers on a budget. This budget airline flies from Newark Airport (EWR) into Helsinki (HEL) and Oulu (OUL) with only one stop, making it both an affordable and quick option to get to your destination.
  • Keep in mind that the base fare on certain airlines may not include baggage. For example, the Economy Light fare on Finnair only includes a carry-on bag. Upgrading to Economy Superlight will add a checked bag to your ticket and may end up being the more economical choice.
  • If your flight to Finland has a layover, some possible layover cities include London (LHR) on British Airways, Amsterdam (AMS) with Delta, and Stockholm (ARN) if you fly on Scandinavian Airlines. Some of these layover times might be long, which is clearly marked in the KAYAK search.
  • You can reduce your environmental impact by flying direct, as nonstop flights emit less CO2 in general. In addition, you can choose an airline that is invested in environmental projects, such as American Airlines, which uses Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Finnair was not able to get our luggage on a connecting flight and there was a substantial delay of two days to obtain our lugguage. They did not communicate well, and we had to travel a significant distance to finally get our luggage. It has been a very negative experience.

Flight on time, landed well ahead of schedule. Attendants were excellent and responsive

The crew was friendly, and the flight landed on time

Rude Iberia security crew at the Madrid terminal. No Iberia officials to be found to redress complaints at the gate. No supervisors. Nothing for processing upgrades at the gate Iberia app did not work to let me upgrade my options to higher classes. No water was offered on a hot day in Madrid. Madrid airport air conditioning was so weak that people were sweating. Never book on any airlines that codeshare with Iberia.

Comfort. Not good very little space after the person in front of you lay back.

On a more than 8 hours flight was only one meal included, which I have never experienced before. Always two meals on the overseas flight. It was very weird.

Positive: It was refreshingly easy and polite check-in and boarding staff. Flight was on time and Helsinki is a very well-signposted airport. Shopping was nice as well. Flight was not full and I had lots of space in economy. Flight was perfectly on time. Negative: Food and drink not very good, but that it is normal on any airline. Didn't expect anything else.

Business seating is soooo uncomfortable. You can sit straight up or lay down. You need pillows behind you because the back doesn’t lay down. Those are need to “prop” you up. The chair has no padding whatsoever. Food was gross. I’ve eaten on Finnair before and the food was exceptional. This time it gave 2 people in our party diarrhea. It was the chicken dish. I took 2 bites and didn’t eat anything more. The flight attendants were nice. You needed an additional lounge in Terminal D at DFW Airport. After waiting 40 minutes to enter, we finally gave up and went to a bar across from the club doors. I’m unsure if I’ll ever book a Finnair flight again.

Very good seat, very comfortable, good food, and good service.

It was a good flight, very comfortable seats for sleeping in business class. Probably the most comfortable business class seat I've ever had (20+ times in business class on various airlines). Service was good, but the only downside is my screen didn't work and it had to be reset multiple times to get it to shut off. I had to block my eyes because the screen was white almost the entire flight and I wore an eye mask when I slept. But when eating and reading in my seat, my eyes hurt because the only way to turn the screen off was reset it and the screen would only be off for a few minutes at a time.

Mediocre. Maybe due to Economy light. Staff was great. Space shrunk, not for me, and definitely not for Vikings. Food was decent. Assistance lagging. There was a possibility to upgrade to Premium economy, however my bid was immediately classified as low and not even considered (though well over minimum bid). Thus I was no bleeding dry.

Upon departing and landing, the man seating in front of me had his seat leaning back. Taking off nobody told him anything. Landing someone from the crew said something but the passenger ignored him and nobody followed up. Felt a bit unsecured. If this that is some of the basics are missed, what else was overlooked?

On time, reasonably comfortable for economy, decent food. All in all a very good experience.

Every flight got canceled or delayed. Customer service was awful.

They lost my luggage and can’t find it. My trip is ruined. Online tracking of lost luggage doesn’t work

No free Wi-Fi. I have SkyMiles but not a high status, having an account has been enough for Wi-Fi on other flights, but this one was going to charge me to use it. Also turbulence was really bad toward the end, but I didn't count this in my ratings since I know Delta cannot control the weather - it's 2026 and lack of WiFi alone is enough for a poor rating.

The stewardess was incredibly rude. The gave you only one drink with dinner.

Cancelled flight, wasn't refunded paid selected seats. Poor customer service. Called airline and they didn't realize the flight was cancelled until several hours after the email notice was sent.

The worst with the trip was the space in economy, my knees are still hurting. There was no way to control personal air by turning a knob above you, it was way to hot on both rides. During the night flight they allowed 2 people from across the aile which was narrow to sit and talk for 7 hours while also using tablets and the flashlight from their phones pointing into the row where I sat at times. They allowed people with way too large baggage to bring onboard. I paid way too much for the ticket ($1,364} for economy. Kayak misinformed me to get cancellation insurance that was only valid for a very short time (less than 12 hours) and was over one hundred dollars. Hotel booking was incorrect, I had the room booked myself at the hotel, only double or larger rooms available which I paid over 400 dollars for. I will never fly with SAS again unless there is no other alternative.

Crew members were excellent. The seat wasn’t the best as well as a food options.

Crew were professional and kind. The flight was smooth. But... The internet, which we paid 35 dollars for, did not work for most of the flight. This made providing media for our child an uncomfortable hassle.

Overall fine. Seemed like one of the older model planes? Crew was mostly very kind, though some of the female attendants were a rather abrupt during the food service.

Leave on time. We waited on the plane for hour hours and it was hot and smelly

The flight attendant on my side of business class seemed like a novice and did not provide good service. Otherwise the flight was good and the entertainment system was very good. No free WiFi.

Flying in the United States with the major airlines has become so underwhelming. A 2-3hr flight in most other parts of the world with the major carriers of the area comes with newer, CLEANER aircraft and significantly better in flight service in terms of both staff attitude and a actual meal service.

I am writing to share detailed feedback regarding my recent journey with American Airlines on the New York (JFK) to New Delhi (DEL) sector, which was ultimately diverted to Jaipur (JAI) due to weather conditions. At the outset, I would like to acknowledge that this was a full long-haul flight of approximately 14–15 hours, and while the journey fulfilled its primary transport objective, several aspects of the experience warrant both recognition and constructive feedback. 1. Cabin Crew Conduct and Service Consistency While the majority of the cabin crew maintained a polite and professional demeanor, one flight attendant’s conduct was notably inconsistent with expected service standards. The tone was often directive and lacked the warmth and guest-centric engagement typically associated with long-haul service. This created a perceptible imbalance in the cabin experience. Although other crew members acknowledged and apologized for the behavior, it highlighted a gap in service standardization and supervisory oversight. 2. Inflight Experience (IFE & Comfort) The inflight entertainment system was unreliable, with content failing to load consistently throughout the journey. Seating comfort in economy class was below expectations when compared with other international long-haul carriers. Cabin environment management at times felt unsettled, with noticeable noise and movement in the aisles. 3. Disruption Handling and Communication (DEL Diversion to JAI) The diversion to Jaipur due to weather was understandably beyond the airline’s control. However, the handling of post-diversion communication and guest management was an area of concern: Information during and after the diversion was fragmented and lacked clarity Limited guidance was provided upon disembarkation regarding next steps (transport, accommodation, onward travel) Ground coordination appeared inconsistent, with hotel partners and passengers receiving incomplete or delayed updates Communication the following morning remained unclear, including last-minute changes to transfer timings This resulted in avoidable uncertainty during a critical disruption phase. 4. Positive Acknowledgment – Ground Recovery Arrangements It is important to recognize that despite the initial communication gaps, the overall recovery framework was eventually well executed: Hotel accommodation was arranged efficiently Meal vouchers were provided appropriately Transfers between airport and hotel were organized in a structured manner Given the sudden and large-scale disruption, these arrangements were commendable and reflect the airline’s ability to operationally recover once systems were in place. 5. Recommendations for Improvement In the interest of strengthening the overall customer experience, I would respectfully propose the following: Service Delivery Reinforce consistent cabin crew service standards, particularly for long-haul sectors Enhance supervisory presence to address outlier behaviors in real time Inflight Product Improve reliability of inflight entertainment systems Reassess economy seating comfort for ultra-long-haul routes Disruption Management Establish a more visible “Care & Coordination Team” during irregular operations Ensure clear, centralized communication (single source of truth) for passengers and ground partners Provide structured briefing points to hotel and transport vendors to avoid information gaps Introduce proactive guest engagement (clear next steps, timelines, reassurance) Closing Reflection: While the journey was impacted by both controllable and uncontrollable factors, the overall experience would have been significantly enhanced through greater consistency in service delivery and more structured communication during disruption. I appreciate the efforts made by the broader team in arranging accommodation and onward logistics under challenging circumstances. With improved coordination and alignment, the experience can be elevated to match the expectations of a global long-haul carrier. Thank you for your attention to this feedback. I trust it will be received constructively and contribute to ongoing service improvement. Warm regards, Soosnata Chowdhury Convert effective for airlines) Or tailor tone

Wifi was spotty. Tray table was very dirty when I sat down.

Flight was extremely hot and they made us check our bags when the space was nowhere near full

Same plane as RDU to LGA — internet not working. Pilot issue of some sort at end of prior flight - I was on same plane for my connection. Late/delayed —

For an international flight the seats were smaller than most flight I have been on in economy. I don’t know the size of the seats or perhaps it was the size of the seat dividers that made the seats feel smaller and little amount of space to even turn your body if you needed to

We paid for saga class, which is the business class for international. My seat was broken and did not recline and my monitor for in-flight entertainment was broken.

I liked the crew but not the uncomfortable seats and lack of movie and tv selection.

They cancelled our connecting flight resulting in another layover reaching our final destination 8 hours later than scheduled.

On-time arrivals and departures. Crew helpful and friendly. Yet everything costs extra: seat selection, food, even airphones!

Was a bit surprised that Icelandair flies a domestically configured 757s on long-haul flights to Iceland (no lie-flat seats in business class).

I am not going to fillo this out for each leg of my trip. My first review holds for the experience

I had no idea that my ticket only paid for my right to get on the plane. They charged me $130 for my carry-on bag because it was 1 inch too big she claimed but it wasn’t! Then they wanted another fee for everything. I had no idea that Icelandair had changed to such a bargain basement airline. I was very disappointed.

Screen didn't work, and neither did the button to tilt the seat even though the seat was comfortable

Second time with Saga Premium, everything was fab, but the entertainment centre on both my flights didn't work, plus the seat on the NY to Rek flight (Airbus) was so solid and so uncomfortable. The 737Max flight's seat was much, much better.

The staff was kind and helpful. There was no food, and you needed to bring your own earphones to use the entertainment, which I didn’t know.

Flight was good but temp in the cabin was cold.

The seats in Premier Economy were very comfortable. The food was better than average. The way British Airways handled our seating was atrocious.

Worst airline in the world. They downgraded me from business class to economy with no compensation.

Even if you wait for connecting passengers you should not be an hour late departing waiting their luggage. Your passengers may have connections in the other end and you harm them.

WiFi wasn’t available to economy until the end of the flight.

Getting the boarding passes between the BA and AA apps was very clunky.

The airline was not clear about a new departure time so we got to the airport early anyway. The flight left early which was great because of weather. The check in process was very easy and staff were friendly and helpful. The crew was great and our flight was very good.

Although business class, the seating was really cramped. The food was so so.

Smooth trip no turbulence which is always a bonus for me lol! In cattle class so an element of being a bit squished (but not as bad as other shorter haul airlines) smaller plane than the one we flew out on and entertainment system wasn’t as modern but still definitely passed the time. Lovely crew x

I was sleeping during dinner service, no one bothered to offer meal later, I remained hungry….until I got a morning sandwich!
