Flight to Istanbul was fine. The flight back was a terrible experience! During our connecting flight in Athens our boarding passes wouldn't print at the self service computers and there was no one to help us so we had to go back out to the front desk. The airline representative was extremely rude. There was 5 employees standing around the computer with NO customers and when we asked if this was Turkish Airlines and if they could help, the woman (manager) responded "this WAS Turkish Airlines" as if they were done helping customers for the day (it was 9AM and our flight was leaving in 45 min). We explained that we couldn't print our passes and she ROLLED her eyes as if it was an inconvenience to help us. THEN on our flight from Istanbul to Chicago, a passenger died an hour into the flight and they placed the body on the seats behind us for over 10 hours! Nobody even told us what happened! We didn't know if they died from natural causes or if it was something else! They didn't offer to seat us somewhere else or even inform us they were placing the body there. We were completely shocked and uncomfortable the whole flight home. We couldn't eat or sleep. We're completely disgusted and scarred from this overall experience.

Flight was delayed by 5 hours and customer service in Istanbul consists of assholes who don't know much about customer service. They gave me their printed policy on flight delays and refused to do what the document requires them to do. I was one of the well treated one! They are bastards.

Walking past the Turkish Airlines desk in Dulles and knowing I would NEVER have to interact with these monsters again.

I am an experienced traveler. I've been to 17 countries and have flown over a million miles in both business and coach. My wife encountered a problem in Istanbul that involved an airport transit visa through Canada. I am certain that any other airline we’ve ever flown would’ve assisted us, since it was easily resolved. To Turkish Airlines, this is simply a part of their business model and a chance to make more money. It took about 8 hours of our time at 5 different airport locations to eventually buy new tickets to get back the next day. Our original tickets say: “REISSUE With 200.00 USD penalty. What I didn’t see was the fine print at the bottom: “Turkish Airlines reserves the right to change rules regarding ticket changes and refunds.”. They mean it. As bad as our personal experience was, the real reason we are so appalled is that we were there long enough to see this is the norm for them. In our single day there, we saw at least 100 other travelers going through similar things. The ONLY solution ever offered is to purchase another ticket. We witnessed several people weeping. Many losing control and shouting. Their own personnel were screaming at customers (in a separate office area though, it was all yucks and laughing). These were people of all nationalities. Africans, Asians, Europeans. We were lucky because we had the means to purchase new tickets. Others clearly didn’t. I really don’t know what happened to some of them. One moment was very symbolic of the entire experience. Another vanquished traveler was paying $843 for a new ticket with cash. He handed her $845 but she, of course, had no change. Instead of the $5, he gave her two $1 bills. I had one in my pocket so gave it to her as well. She held my $1 bill up and pointed to the corner which had a very small piece torn off…no ink was missing…and sneered “I can’t accept this. She did this simply because she could. We were powerless. She knew it and reveled in it.

Most Improved Player - Finnair has done the best experience in overall long haul flights out of the 40plus airlines I have flown in the last 3 years; brand new planes, nice and diverse cabin crew, beautiful lightings videos details chocolates etc, best entertainment system in the industry, and things always go smooth in Helsinki airport. Awesome imrpovement over recent years.

Big struggle for airlines still remains varying quality customer service. Finnair still seems to struggle with this occasionally. Finnair can work harder to keep customer service quality high. Hate to say it, but perhaps letting the bitter, last generation flight attendants who seem to have a grudge about the decline of the glamour and benefits of the job as flying has become commonplace with more competition (seen this on Finnair & N America’s older airlines line United)

the pre-boarding for families with kids was nice, the staff were helpful during the flight

The flight home to DC was fine. The flight going to London from DCA was horrible.The deserts on the kids meals had mold on them. My daughter was vomiting as a result of the food. It ate into our trip which was hard for us as we were visiting my grandmother who is not well. We contacted the airline about it and their proposed compensation was not what we were expecting. Honestly we plan to make an annual trip but based on our experiences with this trip maybe we'll choose a different airline.

The economy seats are more comfortable than average transatlantic flights on other airlines, albeit far from perfect. The meal was nicer too. The crew both onboard and on land was nice and attentive.

The entertainment system is slow and the selection of films to watch could be better.

Eventually special meals were located, but not before passengers specifically demanding for them. WTF. Finnair generously pours you a half an glass of wine with meal, for anything more you have to pay for. Supposedly you can buy snacks with money, but there were no menus or pricelists to be found in the seat pockets. Touchscreen functions were barely working on my entertainment screen, the remote control didn't work altogether. WIFI didn't work at all.

Seats too crowded for 8 hour flight. As soon as the person in front leans back you have no room it is unbelievably uncomfortable to have a seat back in your face for that long!

The destination, the time and direct flight.

When I got to check in at the airport I found out I had to pay $100 per bag. This was never told to me when booking. I was also made aware that if I had booked my bag when I checked in on line each bag would have been 75$ . Of course I hadn't checked in on line and this was a huge surprise.

Seats were comfortable and the flight attendants very attentive.

Having to pay for food or drinks. It's not that much to offer some peanuts and a coke. I would have liked the cabin lighting dimmed sooner and less early before landing.

Flight was smooth and on time. Good flying the 777. Lots of open seats in a not so full flight. The food was good for economy class and the flight attendants very attentive and looking for ways to serve.

The arm rests of the seating would not fold all the way up to allow me to spread to the 2 empty seats next to me. I laid across all 3 seats and tried to sleep, however had the armrest jammed into my back and legs. Also, it took too long for the cabin crew to get the passengers convinced to close the window shades, so the cabin was brightly lit for the entire flight.

I just wanted to say that on all my flights the BA crew has been beyond amazing! On my flight to Paris, one of the crew members who spoke French ( which I do not speak) talked to a couple of French women that were sitting next to me. He got them to show me where the train was, I was very appreciative that he would do that. On my flight back to Charlotte one of the crew made it feel like home, she was so outgoing and helpful, she just seemed like a friend I was hanging out with for the flight.

the pre-boarding for families with kids was nice, the staff were helpful during the flight

The flight home to DC was fine. The flight going to London from DCA was horrible.The deserts on the kids meals had mold on them. My daughter was vomiting as a result of the food. It ate into our trip which was hard for us as we were visiting my grandmother who is not well. We contacted the airline about it and their proposed compensation was not what we were expecting. Honestly we plan to make an annual trip but based on our experiences with this trip maybe we'll choose a different airline.
