The whole experience cost me the loss of a $3500 ticket, a $600 tickets, a $100 for a rental car, and the loss if my NY Eve plans. They dont care. Do not fly Avianca. Delta or Alaska would never treat a passenger thos way. Beware the Star Alliance. I will give up my Gold status with United in 2020 as a result of the behaviour of their so-called 'partner' airline. There was a curfew in Bogota, which caused the plane from Panama to Bogota to be late, thus ensuring I missed my connection. Rather than being put on the next plane, I was forced to miss not only my original one, but 2 further ones. So rather than arrive, as scheduled, at 15:15 I will arrive over 9 hours later, after midnight. Could have been handled better by Avianca."

When we arrived in Bogota, at 9:40 we had time to catch the connecting flight to Montevideo which was scheduled to leave at 10:20pm.... but instead we stayed in the tarmac without moving for over 45 minutes. There were over 30 passengers that were to take that connecting flight, so the airline had plenty of reasons to wait for us. Instead the airline, AVIANCA, chose to leave all of us stranded in Bogota for 24 hours. By the way according to one of the passengers whose husband travelled on the same flight the day before. The same thing happened to him 1 day earlier."

Cons: "It took two hours in line to be told our flight was cancelled. After waiting another hour we were told they did not have alternative flights for us. They refused to have conversation and would randomly leave to the back office for 20 minutes at a time or stop assisting people at all. There were people screaming at the ticketing counter and security was called. In the end we spent 14 hours waiting there for a new flight, got split up and sent to different countries, had to miss work, and were not given any flight credit, accommodation, or even an apology."

I still suspicious that they blamed for rain to cover up their mechanical/ management issues or they intentionally delayed our flight so we can miss the flight to New York which they over booked and cut their loss. Anyway, I needed to arrange a hotel myself and Aviance claimed it was solely due to bad weather. I got what I paid for. Their rate was lower for the risk of their disorganized service and possible dishonesty. Or it can be really bad weather earlier. But one of UK passenger told me her daughter couple was in Santa Marta a few weeks ago and they went through the exact same issue. They might be unlucky family members go through the same rare situations. Now I got why Avianca gets bad reviews."

What is exactly am I supposed to do in Bogota, Columbia for an unexpected additional 24 hours? I had no money, and my credit card wouldn't work there. This was the worst airline experience in my life. Absolutely horrible. I will never travel with Avianca again. Avianca staff spoke hardly any English, so I couldn't hardly communicate with them either. Horrible."

I have allergies and requested a special meal on all legs. No problem on the first three flights. All attendants approached me to confirm my allergy and the special meal. They were very polite. But on this flight, the attendant didn't speak with me about it at all. She tried to give me the regular meal. When I explained I needed an allergy free meal (mind you this was first class), I was told I could not get it and got no apology or other accommodation. Her attitude was take it or leave it. I found this interesting since on two of the other flights an announcement was made about another passenger with an allergy to peanuts so no one could have them on the flights and the attendants were very concerned."

Pros: "it was nice to actually get a meal. that doesnt happen in the us anymore. i was able to check a bag without a ridiculous $50 charge. the first time i had checked in years and it was very convenient. reminded me of how flying used to be before they all became buses in the sky, and for a very reasonable price. the staff were all very friendly from the gate agent to the flight attendants. also, a free drink is a lovely touch. would definitely fly this airline again."

Cons: "On my return flight home, they wouldn't accommodate adjusting my itinerary because I wasn't feeling well. I was willing to pay change fee for 1 layover instead of the 2 layovers on my original itinerary. They wanted to charge me $700 which was greater than my original ticket. So I flew on the original itinerary at started my travels @ 7am on Monday. Flight from Bogotá to Barranquilla w/Avianca airlines was great. In Barranquilla I had a 4 hr layover, checked in w/Copa agent and he said my bag was on plane. In Panama, there was a 1.5 hr layover so I assumed no issues getting my luggage to the correct connection. The flight from Panama was delayed by 40 mins w/no explanation. We just sat on plane. They only played one older movie, plane was old and they did 1 beverage service w/meal for a 5.5 hour flight. I finally arrived back to ORD @ 12:15 am Tuesday. I waited for my luggage in baggage claim for 35 mins. It doesn't arrive and I ask attendant, who brushes me off and says this is the claim for Copa. She disappears for 30-40 mins. I finally see her walking back into international baggage claim (over an hour has passed that I've been in baggage claim) and tell her my luggage did not arrive. She asks me for my claim ticket then proceeds to say "oh yes, I was informed your bag did not make it." I'm upset because it's 1:40am and she could have saved me an hour if she would have helped me when I first asked. I also am curious how an airline loses my bag twice."
Cons: "Cabin crew based in South American countries don't speak a word of English."

Pros: "I liked the fact that there was variety for entertainment! There had great movies, new ones, not all airlines focus on that. Another thing was the food and drinks that the offered. They really kept passengers happy."

They made me check a bag that wasn't checked on my way to Panama but told me I had to. And even though the flight far from full they assigned us the row in front of the exit doors so our seats didn't go down. But in flight - all good."

That can not be a cost effective way to run your business"

This is a huge difference from a couple of years ago when I totally refused to fly this airline due to the the small uncomfortable seats when I was flying from NY to LA. The service was amazing - every person from the kiosk help to the suitcase attendant who found my forgotten duty-free purchase after arrival. I had the best experience flying United - they really stepped up their game!!! No complaints!!!"

I barely made my wedding and missed an entire day, arriving late. Then again had flight delays back and arrived home late right before work the next day. Overall I would never fly United Airlines again."
