The Airbus A350 was almost new. Cabin crew was attentive and professional. Arrived a few minutes early for this long flight. In-plane entertainment options were many, helped pass the time. WiFi was spotty, couldn’t depend on it.

The return flight HK-Vancouver was on the slightly smaller and older Airbus 330 which had no chargers, no in-flight entertainment screen. We received iPad movie screens which were ok. Coach seats were too close compared to those on the LA-HK Airbus big boys (Airbus 350 9 abreast). Bonus negative was my seat was broken and wouldn't recline and there was a metal box underneath the seat in front of me so leg room was restrictive and I'm 6 feet tall. Shoulda sprung for Business Class. As for food, first meal was rice, kimchee, and a tiny bit of pork and veggies which was ok. Snack was pizza bread, really hard to eat/runny and served with no napkin. Breakfast was runny scrambled eggs, beans, and a cooked cherry tomato and single stalk of broccoli. Staff was polite. Worse yet was the Sunday morning line at Vancouver customs: at least 2500-3000 people from several flights and 4 (YOU READ THAT RIGHT: FOUR) customs agents! Took 2 hours and change to get through. Coming to the US through this airport I had to leave security, ticket for Portland leg, recheck my bag, go through security AGAIN, and GO THROUGH CUSTOMS TO THE US. DO NOT TAKE THIS FLIGHT THROUGH VANCOUVER TO TRAVEL BACK TO THE STATES! Worst international travel experience of my life, bar none.

The aircraft Hong Kong Airlies uses on this route is a joke. The business class is worse than economy class on other flights. Everything is dated, there is not much left of seat upholstering after 20 years without any updates and the headrest sits at a hight where my shoulder is - with no chance of adjusting it. I left the 5 hour flight with backpain and the resolution to NEVER AGAIN fly with Hong Kong Airlines.

This ridiculous airline and it's rude, obnoxious staff in Chengdu made a mockery of my friend and I (two 21 year old American girls traveling alone). We had booked round trip tickets back in October 2017 that included a 1 hour layover in Chengdu first, then a 7 hour layover in Shanghai on our way to Bangkok for a trip in Thailand. That was fine with us. Then all of a sudden it changed to a 6 hour layover in Chengdu then an 18 HOUR layover in Shanghai. We decided to deal with it and get a hotel room in Shanghai, no big deal. After a great trip in Thailand and leaving fine from Bangkok to our first layover in Chengdu, that is where the nightmare started. First off, going through Chengdu customs, I don't know if it is because Americans do not travel through there a lot, but the officers pulled us aside and were passing around our American passports around their staff, taking pictures of them with Iphones before handing us "in-transit" paperwork to fill out. As weird as that was, no one really seemed to speak english and we just wanted to get away from them and get through. When we went to the check in counter, they handed me a boarding pass for our flight at 1:50 that afternoon, but then proceeded to tell my friend that she wasn't on a flight until the next morning at 7 am out of Chengdu and our original connecting flight out of Shanghai at 11:50 the next morning was now at 8 pm for her. What could have been simply fixed like it WAS after calling priceline and our travel agent, the staff at the ticket counter and a representative over the phone made our lives living hell. They barely spoke english and the ones that did were very rude to us, saying that they couldn't help us and put us on the phone with China Eastern. FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF we were on the phone with a representative who was talking us in circles, telling us that there were no available seats on the 1:50 and that he could get her on the next 3:45 out of Chengdu, then put us on hold to come back and say he couldn't only change 1 domestic flight in China, but would have to cancel her flight to NY. When offering to pay to just DO IT and get out of china, he said that if he were to cancel it and take our credit card info, it "may or may not go through" and if it didn't she would be stuck with no flights. When asked how that made any sense, he proceeds to say" Because miss, our system sucks," and other rude things like "Why can't you just keep your flight and meet your friend in NY." then him along with a rude ticket counter guy say that he could help us if we took 5,000 yuan out of the bank and paid them cash. TRYING TO SCAM US. After all this drama a simple call to priceline was able to fix the problem no payment involved, and there WERE available seats on all the flights and a domestic flight could be changed. LYING, SCAMMING, RUDE, individuals. Definitely worth a little more money to take any other airline BUT THIS ONE.

Serving an American destination, they should know how much ice Americans like in drinks. Normally not a big deal, but when you really need to cool down to keep from barfing, it is important.

Seats had good headrests with adjustable "wings" to cradle head while sleeping. USB plug below entertainment screen.

A good half the plane was first class and business class. (This was a 15 hour Hong King to Boston flight.) They handed out a fancy menu with 4 entrees but by the time they got to economy only pasta was left. We did at least get a small bottle of water; on our outgoing flight they doled it out in meager glasses. When boarding in Hong Kong we had to go through an additional security check between the gate and the plane (that was a first...) and had our water bottles confiscated. So we were reliant on what they would give us on the plane. Seats were tight, unlike some airlines that give you a little extra room. Wouldn't fly again unless their price was a real bargain.

The staff are very efficient and professional. The food was much better than I expected. We were given pillows and blankets . Bathrooms were clean .

The only issue with CEA was checking in and boarding. It was brutal coming out of Bangkok. I’m not sure if this is the fault of CEA or Bangkok Airport.

When we went to the check in counter, they handed me a boarding pass for our flight at 1:50 that afternoon, but then proceeded to tell my friend that she wasn't on a flight until the next morning at 7 am out of Chengdu and our original connecting flight out of Shanghai at 11:50 the next morning was now at 8 pm for her. What could have been simply fixed like it WAS after calling priceline and our travel agent, the staff at the ticket counter and a representative over the phone made our lives living hell. They barely spoke english and the ones that did were very rude to us, saying that they couldn't help us and put us on the phone with China Eastern. FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF we were on the phone with a representative who was talking us in circles, telling us that there were no available seats on the 1:50 and that he could get her on the next 3:45 out of Chengdu, then put us on hold to come back and say he couldn't only change 1 domestic flight in China, but would have to cancel her flight to NY. When offering to pay to just DO IT and get out of china, he said that if he were to cancel it and take our credit card info, it "may or may not go through" and if it didn't she would be stuck with no flights. When asked how that made any sense, he proceeds to say" Because miss, our system sucks," and other rude things like "Why can't you just keep your flight and meet your friend in NY." then him along with a rude ticket counter guy say that he could help us if we took 5,000 yuan out of the bank and paid them cash. TRYING TO SCAM US. After all this drama a simple call to priceline was able to fix the problem no payment involved, and there WERE available seats on all the flights and a domestic flight could be changed. LYING, SCAMMING, RUDE, individuals. Definitely worth a little more money to take any other airline BUT THIS ONE.

Crewmen at the luggage/bags scanning were very rude. Our flight from Manila to Guangzhou was delayed by an hour or so. With all the pressure we were already experiencing and rushing to get to our connecting flight, here comes these crewmen in charge of scanning our bags we're all shouting at us to rush. The delay was not the passengers fault.

This ridiculous airline and it's rude, obnoxious staff in Chengdu made a mockery of my friend and I (two 21 year old American girls traveling alone). We had booked round trip tickets back in October 2017 that included a 1 hour layover in Chengdu first, then a 7 hour layover in Shanghai on our way to Bangkok for a trip in Thailand. That was fine with us. Then all of a sudden it changed to a 6 hour layover in Chengdu then an 18 HOUR layover in Shanghai. We decided to deal with it and get a hotel room in Shanghai, no big deal. After a great trip in Thailand and leaving fine from Bangkok to our first layover in Chengdu, that is where the nightmare started. First off, going through Chengdu customs, I don't know if it is because Americans do not travel through there a lot, but the officers pulled us aside and were passing around our American passports around their staff, taking pictures of them with Iphones before handing us "in-transit" paperwork to fill out. The 3 employees at the counter got together & solved a glitch in our Australia visa that was priventing them from issueing bording pass for our second leg of travel They were outstanding & also unexpectedly we received a hotel respite for our 8 hour layover in Guangzhou! Smiling flight atendents. This is my first travel with China southern On the other hand during 6 wk prior to our trip we were unable to get anybody on the phone to ask Q or reserve a seat. On line charades where like a closed loops ! The price for long haul: Dubai/Guangzhou/cairns could not be beat!!
