KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Amman
Jordan is beautiful, but its public transportation system is lacking and only covers its main cities. Therefore, renting a car is the smartest move for tourists visiting the area, especially if you want to see attractions like the ancient ruins of Petra, Mujib Nature Reserve, or the Dead Sea.
Amman Airport serves much of the country of Jordan. It is a very large airport with lots of amenities and services including numerous car rental agencies. With offices in the arrival terminal, you can quickly rent a car from many well-known car rental companies such as Avis, Budget, National, or Thrifty.
Although it is a small country, Jordan is well-developed with a strong highway system and modern roads. You’ll find it easy to drive on the roads; however, laws for driving are not so strict. For example, many drivers do not use turn signals or wear seat belts. It’s also important to note that road signs are in Arabic, which can be a challenge.
Traffic in Amman can get quite busy during commuting or rush hours. It can get busiest downtown from about 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., as most governmental employees must be to work by 8 a.m. It starts to get busy for the evening commute at 2:30 p.m., but typically slows down at about 4:30 or 5:00 p.m. In the morning, traffic is most hectic coming into downtown. And in the evening, it is busiest going away from downtown.
Renting a car gives you flexibility and freedom to drive in Amman, unlike public buses that take longer to arrive at various destinations. The city boasts iconic attractions and neighborhoods for travelers who love adventure. You can drive to a few places, such as Masada National Park, 59 miles (95km) southwest of Amman, within two hours. Jordan Valley Marriott Dead Sea Resort & Spa is 24 miles (38km) southwest of Amman and takes only one hour when driving a rental car. Also, you can enjoy a road trip 62 miles (99km) north of Amman to the Sea of Galilee within 1h 50min.
Road conditions in Amman city are excellent, but traffic can be hectic. That's why you should research the best roads to drive and which to avoid before booking a rental vehicle. In addition, roads in the city, such as Rainbow Street, are well-marked and have signposts to warn about the speed limit. However, be cautious when driving your rental car at night because most secondary routes out of town lack streetlights. In addition, Amman car rentals offer various car rental options to choose from depending on which route you prefer in the city, including SUVs and vans.
Most cheap car rentals in Amman are near Amman Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA). Some are located near South Terminal 1 and others near North Terminal 2. Thus, you can choose where you prefer to pick up and drop off your rental car. You need to cover 18 miles (30km) from the airport to the city. Driving a rental vehicle takes 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the traffic. However, an airport shuttle takes about 45 to 60 minutes to cover the same distance. Some popular car rental companies near the airport include Arena Rent a Car, Ace, and Avis.

Good service and communication. One extra day was arranged. Older car with various non working parts such as central locking, misaligned headlight etc.
2.0 Poor
Anonymous, Aug 2022
The car was provided without a spare tire and old wheels in terrible conditions. Considering Jordanian roads and long drives without any kind of pit stops there was an extremely high risk associated with this travel. The company should compensate
It went well! It was in the airport so easy pick up and return but I wanted few more hours and i had to pay for a full day, The price for the extra day was expensive compared to what i paid for the 4 days. I got a speeding ticket too so i had to pay extra but it was easy to get back my deposit on the spot!
Very bad experience. When I reached the counter, they told me there was no car available for me despite my confirmed booking! After spending more than 2 hours waiting at the airport, they finally gave me a smaller car (a downgrade) and promised to replace it with the correct one the next day. I tried calling them many times (over 100 attempts), but no one ever answered. Extremely disappointing service.

We picked up our car in Amman. The wrong address for Avis is given on all the paperwork. The location moved a while ago. Thankfully we found a taxi driver at the old location who helped us figure this out. Once at the Avis location, we found the guy to be very helpful and kind. We dropped the car off at the international airport in Amman. There is zero instruction for what to do. We finally found a guy from another car rental agency and he helped us figure out where to park. Instructions would have been nice (you park and go inside to their counter to checkout). Otherwise, the people we dealt with were great, the car did its job, and we were satisfied. The car smelled a little like cigarettes but in this part of the world, you will find that.
