One of the biggest things to be aware of when driving in and around Derby is that it can snow quite a bit in winter. The local council issues snow warnings when the roads are likely to be affected, so keep an ear or eye out for those. You can also use Derbyshire county’s live road condition cameras, which you’ll find on the county’s official website. Most of the roads are gritted once the conditions warrant it, so this will help you if you’re not used to driving in snowy conditions. Make sure that you watch out for other cars in this kind of weather as well.
Rush hour in Derby is limited to the city centre and the various motorways that feed the city. In the latter case, stay clear of the M1 Southbound at the J23 intersection. Another particularly congested road is the A52 Westbound, where it meets the A6514. Lastly, during rush hours, which are between 08:00 and 09:00 in the morning and from around 16:00 till 17:30, try to avoid the A50. The traffic ebbs and flows, but the road can be challenging to cross or turn on to during busy times.

Once again, it’s the snow that you’ll have to bear in mind most when booking car hire in Derby. Make sure you hire a vehicle with high-traction tyres if you’re visiting in winter. An MPV or SUV will do you nicely, and a 4x4 will be even better. However, if you stick to the many gritted roads throughout the city, you’ll have no problem in a decent sedan, or even one of the smaller ones. Outside those times of the year you can expand your choice, but just be aware that you may have to deal with potholes caused by the snowy winter conditions.
Speed limits are pretty strictly enforced in Derby, and they’re well signposted so you won’t be able to claim that you weren’t aware of them. In the centre of town and residential areas, don’t go faster than 30mph. On the single-carriageway arterials like the A50, you can travel up to 60mph.
