San José del Cabo car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in San José del Cabo

I recommend ensuring that your car insurance covers in Mexico and getting a letter of international coverage from your credit card, if you're using credit card rental insurance. Show the letter to Fox and demand that they waive their insurance charges. They might say no and tell you to go elsewhere, or tell you that you won't find another car rental at the last minute in Cabo. Don't listen to them. I found a car rental from Cactus at the airport for half the price (after I'd already signed the Fox contract). So just be wary, be prepared, and demand not to be charged a ludicrous price for insurance you don't need. If you don't have international rental coverage through a policy or credit card, then you'll just have to accept their charges.

We drove North to Los Barriles. Road was in good condition. Much of Baja is dirt roads though, so an SUV is highly recommended.

Make sure your pickup time is accurate and research the agency and insurance ahead of time.

If you're comfortable and capable of driving in a large American city and have good common sense and a decent sense of direction, you should be fine. Beware of livestock on the roads at night. They can cause serious accidents.

Driving in San Jose del Cabo was ok, but beware of the road conditions, there can be bumps and dips that are greater than they appear.

You need to get SLI $35 a day. They’ll try and push CDW. Take your time checking out the vehicle. Document everything.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in San José del Cabo

  • With limited public transportation options, a good way to ensure you get the most out of your visit is to book a San José del Cabo car rental. A vehicle puts beaches, the city center and excursions—like zip-lining—all within reach. What’s more, a personal vehicle also makes it easy to cart around whatever gear or materials you’ll need to take with you for a full day of adventure—no having to head back to the hotel to pick something up.
  • For those of you who have secured a car rental in San José del Cabo through KAYAK, you can find it ready and waiting for you at the airport when you land. At the Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) there are service desks for many major car rental companies, including Ace, Economy, U-Save, and Europcar, to name just a few. To pick up your car, head to the baggage claim area, which is located in Terminal 2, then check in at the rental car company’s service desk. The service team here will direct you to your vehicle’s location.
  • To reduce the pace at which drivers travel along San José del Cabo’s roadways, the city has implemented speed bumps and speed divots. For this reason, you’ll want to keep your eyes on the road at all times to ensure you and your vehicle aren’t jostled by these roadway features. While driving, you’ll also discover that locals may become impatient with drivers unfamiliar with the roads, so be sure you check your review mirror for any motor vehicles looking to overtake you, and just let them pass.
  • San José del Cabo is an especially tourist-focused city and, because of this, you’re less likely to encounter rush hour traffic in the timeframes before and after a normal 9am-to-5pm workday. However, you may sometimes find roadways a bit more congested around 6am to 7am, then again around 5pm to 6pm.
  • Book cheap San José del Cabo car rentals through KAYAK and explore the nearby towns freely. Grab your keys and get on the wheels all set for an adventure. Head straight to La Paz which is around 87 miles from San Jose del Cabo. The views there are a sight to behold. Furthermore, tourist spots like Balandra Beach, Malecon Kiosk, and La Ventana Beach are worthwhile. Next, visit Todos Santos. Being only 40 miles away you can check out popular destinations like Playa La Cachora, Nuestra Senora del Pilar Church, and Los Pinos Park. If you’re looking to unwind and get in tune with nature, 211 miles away you’ll find El Mirador where you can relax and enjoy nature’s richness.
  • We’d recommend securing cheap San José del Cabo car rentals for the guests disembarking from Marina Puerto Los Cabos Port. Marina Puerto Los Cabos Port has a significant number of guest arrivals into the city and the car rentals agencies situated close by ensure you’re behind the wheels in no time. Some of the agencies include Avis, situated at Secrets Puerto Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort, or Europcar car rental located at ED. N7A, Local Puerto Logistico. You can also opt for National Car Rental, which is at P. º Malecon San Jose Sn, Zona Hotelera.
  • When driving using cheap San José del Cabo car rentals, visitors should exercise caution with the pedestrians along the way. Drivers should specifically take note of the District 23400 event, a cultural event strewn with an art gallery along San José del Cabo streets. As a result, every Thursday from November to July, Alvaro Obregón main street is a strictly pedestrian-only zone for the people to stroll through this sensory and cultural experience. Drivers of cheap San José del Cabo car rentals should adhere to this.

Reserved a vehicle that would hold 8 people. And when we arrived they were trying to give us a grand Cherokee that only fit 5. They ended up giving us 2 cars to get to our hotel, but the other guy that had to drive was not comfortable driving in Mexico. So we went to the hotel and stayed there. They were supposed to deliver a van later that day after 4. And we after calling and calling they finally brought us a car the following day at around 5pm. So I paid for 3 days. And used the new replacement for a total of 18 hours… still charged me full price, and wanted to charge me for the fuel for the first cars that were driven. When you tell someone you’re going to have something, or tell them you’re going to be somewhere at a certain time then you should do it. I will not be renting with Mex rent a car or using kayak ever again.

You are forced to purchase third-party liability insurance as your credit card coverage or your regular insurance policy is not valid in Mexico. We were aware of this coming down and we were prepared to purchase the insurance. However, $500 for third-party liability for 10 days is ridiculous. The neighbour in the condo we were staying pays $300 for the whole year for his liability insurance .

They were scamming customers. They force you to purchase their insurance for $99-150. I saw them find random things wrong with multiple cars that were being returned — it was almost like they already knew where the damage was. Don’t believe the prices, just go to enterprise or some other reputable company.

The rental price is provided in USD, with an exchange rate of 20-30% higher than the official rate. That's not the main issue. But, the fact they make you pay in Mexican pesos with the conversion rate they provide. Is not possible to pay in cash (USD/MXN), nor in the currency of your credit card (USD). Thus, they overcharge you with at least 20% more than the original price announced/agreed. This is an abusive practice, and I would recommend find another place where to rent a car, as there are plenty not doing this.

Read the reviews for MexRentACar. The same thing about the pickup/dropoff reverting to noon happened to the couple in front of me. The insurance per day happened to me. they wanted $28 per day, but I told them I had called and it was $18 dollars per day. So I ended up getting $0 deductible for any damages to the vehicle. Regardless of this, I still took detailed video of all the car, specifically in areas of prior damage. Sure enough, during inspection, they found a "new" scratch. I showed them the video and that was enough to get them off my back. Would NOT recommend MexRentACar. Another this is that I did not know I had booked with Priceline, I thought Kayak was booking agency, it's not.

The absolute most rudest staff & human beings we have ever had to work with. Customer service is horrible. I have already submitted a claim. Run away from this place! Complete scam of a company. Over charging for insurance. Staff will curse at you when you ask for paper work. My wife took a video of the situation which has now been posted all over social media. We hope we shine some light for those who would even consider renting a car here. Run away! Do not rent a car from the Europcar in Cabo airport area literally a few steps from the arrival & departure of the airport. Renting a car in Mexico is a rip off. Once you think you have secured a rental fee you get hit with not only one type of insurance coverage BUT 3. So your rental ends up being very expensive. If you have a credit card that can cover your basic needs, IT IS NOT ENOUGH to satisfy the do call coverage. In addition, they send you a letter telling you that because of high demand your vehicle is not available, BUT they a wonderful upgrade for 3 or 4 times as expensive. We ended up renting from a different vendor, and ended up being less expensive and my credit card satisfied the basic coverage. However, we had to sign o declination on all other additional BS.

Pros:

drop off was easy and when shuttle was going late, the guy offered to drive me to terminal, but then the shuttle showed up.

Cons:

1. They forced me to buy the more expensive insurance. They wouldn't rent the car unless I did. Another lady refused and they let her go, so my rental ended up costing 3x. 2. It took forever to get the car because they kept forcing the up-sell, while the family was waiting. It felt like a mafia run rental agency. 3. The car didn't have a front license plate and instead had this big piece of paper pasted to front windshield that obstructed passenger view.

I travel more than half of the year for work and personal reasons and I’ve never had such a terrible experience with an employee as I did at Europcar Cabo with a man named Eduardo Garcia (had a shaved head and ponytail and the supervisor and he told me that was his name, which I cannot confirm and wouldn’t be surprised if he was lying). He was extremely rude to me and the 3 women I was traveling with from the first experience at pickup where he came out and rudely said move the van now. We said one person is just jumping out and we’ll leave and he said “no you need to move the van right now” His tone and shortness was uncalled for and rude. We moved the van and when we went inside I then dealt with the supervisor (he told me at pickup he was the supervisor and had glasses) who was very friendly. When I returned the car he said “let me do my job and I’m going to check the car. It will take approximately 5 minutes” I said ok He then took over 20 minutes to check the car and pointed out some damage on the car to me. I assured him it was there from previously. He then said “do you have a picture of it though?” I said yes I do. He said “I need to see that picture then to prove it” I asked if they had their own pictures and report of damages and he said “well it’s your responsibility to have pictures of it. Let me do my job.” I asked if he needed to see them now and he rudely without looking at me said “let me do my job.” He took another 5 minutes going through every centimeter of the car then went inside and called out someone who had a blue shirt on from another car rental service. He also came out and then he proceeded to go around the entire car again pointing out all the damage to the other guy. I asked how long it was going to take since it had already been 30 minutes and they told me “sit down and let us do our job” At this point I felt that was unnecessary to speak to anyone in that way and I felt sure the two would not speak to any man in that way. But of course that’s just my feeling. I said I’m fine standing and would like to know when they’re done what they’ve found. They told me “lady just sit down and let us do our job” refusing to tell me how long it would take (I had a flight to catch) and refusing to tell me if in fact there was any damage or if he still needed my pictures. I then went in and asked for the manager / supervisor at which point a man with glasses said he was the supervisor. I explained to him what was going on saying that he was being extremely rude, telling me to sit down, refusing to tell me how long it would take, saying I needed to show him pictures because there’s damage but then not telling me if he did actually need the pictures. At which point he came over and loudly and rudely interrupted me saying very loudly “she’s not letting me do my job. Lady you need to let me do it.” I asked him, yet again please not to call me lady and I didn’t appreciate being told to sit down and being spoken to how he did. And to please let me talk to the supervisor. He then switched into Spanish and started saying to the supervisor I was asking questions and not letting him “do his job”. He didn’t know I spoke Spanish clearly but that is also rude. He laughed at me when I said please don’t call me lady and I don’t think you’d speak to men like this. He then sniggered and when I asked what was funny he just laughed louder. Sexism at its absolute best. The supervisor then cut in and said yeah ok you can make a complaint. Eduardo then presented me with a tablet and said rudely “sign this.” I said what am I signing? The contract For what? For the car rental. I then asked so what did you find? He said “no damage” I said so after 40 minutes of you harassing me about pictures you needed to say, refusing to tell me how long it will be because of my flight and bringing out yet another guy to discuss things with, there’s no damage?! Unbelievable. I said I’m going to file a complaint. They supervisor said to Eduardo in Spanish clearly assuming I didn’t understand “no importa. No pasa nada” don’t worry. Nothing will happen. I said in Spanish “si pasa algo” yes something will happen and walked out. A terrible experience and case of sexism and I will complain to Europcar HQ as well since my partner has a prestige account with Europcar and will also complain.

Pickup took a long time. Rental agency charged me $160 for the most basic insurance and said it was mandatory. I paid $23 through Kayak.

The biggest problem is the bait-and-switch between the reservation price (which was supposed to be $33 total) and the actual amount I needed to pay including required insurance ($180). I have rented many cars and I do understand that, outside the U.S., I sometimes need to add insurance beyond my own personal car insurance and coverage provided by my credit card. But it shouldn't be almost 6 times the quoted price. Kayak really should ban this kind of behavior onits platform. Additionally, the inside-the-store shop was disorganized and confusing. (I live in Mexico and speak Spanish, so this isn't a language issue.) The woman outside who processed the drop-off was friendly and helpful. EuropCar is clearly a lower-tier rental car company.

When you get there you are blindsided by insurance fees that are 3 or 4 times the cost of the car. By that time it’s too late to change your mind and you have to pay. It’s a terrible practice and this should be more prominent when renting the car.

Pros:

The car was OK, had to jump it once because it couldn't stand the radio on and the car was very weak and sounded like it had some transmission problems. But it did it's job, can't expect much from a Renault

Cons:

I made the reservation for $70 for all 5 days, thought it was a great rate. When we got there they said there was a mandatory insurance that jumped the price to OVER $250 for 5 days. Why are we booking at such a low rate and believe that is the TOTAL price as the website says then figure out we need to pay 4x the price at the spot. Then I extended for another 2 days and it was over $120 for the 2 days. Super misleading and that is definitely Kayak's fault for quoting such low rates, I wish they would honor the rate that I was quoted before I made my way to Mexico and got ripped off because I needed a car. Literally everyone was complaining about the huge insurance rates at the store.

Pros:

Drop off was easy.

Cons:

The required insurance wasn’t include in the upfront price and the cost was doubled when insurance was added. The car was a piece of junk, including drivers side large crack in the windshield, no power, one tire almost bald.
