The law still requires you to follow speed limit rules even with a car rental in Newark. The speed limit in the city varies depending on location. Generally, the speed limit in Newark is 25 mph. These include places like residential districts and business areas. The school district's limit reduces to 20 mph for obvious reasons. In certain low-density residential neighborhoods and business areas, the limit is 35 mph, while on all other roadways, the limit is 50 mph. All interstates and some state highways have a limit of 55 mph and others 65 mph. Over and above the mentioned speed limits, certain places in Newark are different. For example, the speed limit on Park Avenue to East Orange City Line is 30 mph; on Port Street, it is 40 mph; on Raymond Boulevard, it's 35 mph; and on Route NJ21 McCarter Highway, its 45 mph. Due to the varying speed limits in different areas, always look at road signage to identify which limit applies.
A justifiable concern for people looking to rent a car in Newark is the availability of parking spots. The good news is that Newark has several parking lots and garages. Nonetheless, the downtown area has limited parking spots. Newark has areas with free parking spots, which are difficult to find. Some streets with free parking are Bleeker, Halsey, New, University Avenue, Washington, Colden, Lock, Summit, Hudson, and Newark. If you don't find a free parking spot, you can park at cheap garage parking spots on Edison, Mulberry, Lafayette, Raymond Boulevard, and New Streets. The city of Newark has alternate side parking and following the City of Newark on Twitter is the best way to know what side pertains to what time and unplanned changes.

Pros:
The staff was pleasant and pickup/drop-off was easy.Cons:
The security deposit fee was not as transparent as it could've been. It was buried within the rental agreement, and even including a rough estimate (based on vehicle class) in the cost total would've been helpful. We thankfully had a second form of payment to cover the balance and avoid catastrophe.4 locations in Newark

A few minutes before I was supposed to arrive, Hertz called and cancelled my rental. I continued to drive the additional minute-and-a-half to the office and walk inside to see if they had some vehicle they could rent me. The agent said they could not. The agent said that they did not have any Vehicles available. When I inquired about when I could make a reservation to get the specific class of vehicle I had booked the agent said that they were not taking reservations because all of them were booked up for the foreseeable future. Which doesn't make much sense. However, I would like to clarify that the agent was not the problem. The agent was respectful and courteous despite delivering undesirable news with not available placations. I believe that the source of the problem lies in the local market logistics. More specifically, I believe the problem lies with whomever is responsible for making sure that vehicles are available for the reservations. I would like that part investigated and solved.4.0 Mediocre

Pros:
No waiting time because no other customers were at the Newark drop off point for AvisCons:
I never got his name, but the tall, heavy set African-American guy who was at the front desk when I returned the rental car scammed me for cash for himself and should be fired. Seriously. I've been waiting for this review opportunity because I have no clue who else to contact about this. When I returned the van -- after filling it up with gas beyond full for a total of $30 just an hour or so before returning the van, the guy at the front desk seemed real nice and friendly, took the car keys to check the condition of the car, and then returned and suddenly announced (still with a nice demeanor and smile on his face), that the gas tank was "just a smidge" under the Full level, but "we could take care of that" for just $5 in cash ... otherwise he'd have to charge me the usual rate for extra gas and put it on my credit card that was on file. I told him I had just filled up the entire tank, but he still said it was under the max of full. In hindsight, I should have insisted on going out to the parking lot WITH him to show him it was filled even beyond full just barely an hour before, but I was already so exhausted from the move, that I wanted to get home ... and he was "so nice." (Stupid me, from New York City, I should have known a scam when I saw one.) I looked in my wallet and discovered I only had a $10 bill. He said that would be fine, but he didn't have any change ... So after renting the van for a whole week for a well-worth-it $500, that $10 I gave this con artist ruined my entire experience renting from Avis, and made me realize I had been taken by someone who had this sort of thing down pat. Since he is the only person in that entire Avis office at the drop off point, he clearly is used to saying the exact same thing and making money off the books for himself by getting people to give him "tips" in exchange for lying to them about how much is in their gas tank. I typically don't complain about anything, but this is ONE thing that needs to be addressed by Avis. If someone is really and truly reading this feedback, as opposed to just doing the perfunctory e-mail questionnaire to make customers think Avis really cares about their experience, they will call me back or email me within 24 hours after reading this so that we can discuss and take some action. Scam artists have no place being hired for the front counter of any Avis car place. The guy from Pakistan at the Avis rental place in Hoboken, where I picked up the car to begin with, was the epitome of professionalism, courtesy, good humor and genuine helpfulness (and should probably be promoted to manager, if he isn't already). Any company he works for would be lucky to have him, and customers clearly and deservedly love him. The exact opposite is unfortunately the case for the guy in Avis's Newark drop off place.3.9 Poor
