Stuttgart has many places of interest like the Technology Museum, the Mercedes-Benz Museum, or the Schloss Solitude. These attractions are spread far apart across the city, and there’s no better way to explore them all than with your own rental car. Rent a car for the number one car country and benefit from the freedom and thrill you get when you speed on the no-speed-limit freeways that still exist in Germany.
Stuttgart Airport is located south of the city and it’s recommended to rent a car directly from there, as it means travelers can start their journey right upon arrival. The airport includes various rental car agencies like Hertz or Enterprise. The drive to Stuttgart center will take about twenty minutes and travelers will get there fastest via the B27.
Germany is a speeding paradise for drivers and is simply a country of fast cars. The toll-free freeways do not have speed restrictions in many places. Make sure to drive on the right lane if it is too fast for you so you do not block passing cars. Also bear in mind that Stuttgart is one of the German cities with a low-emission zone. This means a car requires a green sticker to enter the city, so it is important to ask the rental agency whether such a sticker is included when booking the car.
Driving in Stuttgart is mostly a pleasant experience, with German drivers having an excellent reputation on the road. However, inbound traffic can be severe between 7 and 9 am as well as outbound traffic between 4 and 6 pm. If possible, try to avoid going into or out of town during these times and enjoy a smoother driving experience by driving later or earlier.
To rent a car in Stuttgart, you must be at least 21 years old. Document-wise, you must have a driver’s license from your home nation that you’ve held for a period not shorter than 12 months, as well as a photo ID and a credit card in your name. Generally, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is not a requirement for foreigners to drive in Germany. However, since most cheap car rentals in Stuttgart require it, you should carry it. Apart from enabling you to rent a car, an IDP will also help you to avoid miscommunicating with local traffic police if you’re a non-German-speaking tourist.
Suppose you’re arriving at Stuttgart via rail. In that case, you can easily pick up your rental of choice at Stuttgart Main Station, given that it is home to notable car rental operators, including Alamo, Sixt, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, Keddy, and Budget. Since the locations for these car rental operators are within walking distance of the station’s terminal, you can get to your preferred agency without any mode of transportation.
Renting a car from one of the companies offering cheap car rentals in Stuttgart is a wise idea, especially if you love road trips. The reason is that Stuttgart is surrounded by several road-trip-worthy destinations. If you’d like to go for a short drive, Tübingen is an ideal location. Just 27 miles from Stuttgart, this ancient town is a 40-minute drive via B27. If you’re up for a lengthier drive, check out Heidelberg. Located in a Neckar valley 76 miles from Stuttgart, it is a 1 hour 30 minute drive from the Stuttgart city center via the A81 and A5.

They charged me over 300 euros for a scratch on the left front wheel. I never parked against a curb on the drivers side. They don't inspect the car when you drop it off, they do it after you leave and send you a bill for damage. The pictures they send might be a different car than the one you drove. Not impressed. Will not rent from them again.
They tried a bait and switch. Pretended not to have the confirmed car and demanded I pay more. When I refused they threatened to call the police!! Google them, seems to be standard practice.

Compact
I had booked a Compact VW Golf or similar. I was given a crappy Mitsubishi Mirage with 78hp, no apple car play, and the trunk wasn’t even big enough for one suitcase. A VW Golf base version has more than double the horsepower, Apple car play and a trunk you can fit two suitcases in. Had I known I was going to get a crappy Mitsubishi I would have either looked at what better models were offered or gone somewhere else. The people themselves were nice enough but I shouldn’t get the cheapest of the cheap cars if I book a golf.
Charged me €70 euros extra at the airport and they said it is because my collection time was past 10oclock but this was never mentioned to me during the booking process.
The lady at STR was very rude ,uncooperative and VERY VERY ARGUMENTATIVE. I told her I had no internet on my phone as I am from the US and not willing to pay for the high rates in Europe just for 1 day. I asked for a MAP to the FRA airport and was given a paper with many QR codes to scan. The rate i paid on kayak did not match what she charged me incl. The insurance. I purchased the additional insurance on here and was told it's NOT VALID if anything happened. I will not get another car from that company- the value i paid versus what I got was beyond disappointing. It is 2024 and I had a car with no navigation system. The person receiving my car in FRA was very pleasant and helpful but did not make up for what I've experienced at the counter in STUTTGART.

Passenger van
The guy in the office was completely and unnecessary rude, he was making fun of us we don’t know why and he was unprofessional making us believe that for every possible fee we would be charged 30 eur extra, and for every possible scratch in the van we would be charg extra 3000 eur. Finally, once we were picking up the van in the airport, the price to pay was an 80% more that the one referred in the website. I will never use Alamo again.
