Very modern and free wi-fi
Excellent room and breakfast was also excellently presented. Staff friendly and helpful. None
Location, easy to find, Lift tricky to operate, required some info from reception.payment of car park, heating in bedroom not operating, I now had a reply from hotel to say the next day it was working fine, if this was the case why could a member of your staff not operate it the night we reported it faultyand offer us an additional dufet for the bed, that night it was very cold and made the stay in the room uncomfrtable to cold to shower and very cold getting out of bed the following morning.
Clean, well organised hotel. Reception area spacious and light. Views of Cathedral and Castle on hill above bedrooms. Restaurant good. Management in Reception took a long time to respond when several guests arrived together. Only one desk was staffed with receptionist seriously overloaded. Many staff came and went while guests became impatient.
Ideally positioned for a walk into the beautiful city of Durham Very expensive for just a one night stay and dispite the car park costing extra the snow had not been cleared.
Pleasant staff, clean and modern facilities, easy walk to town centre Car park barrier failed - though was solved in a few minutes
The hotel was clean, modern, stylish and was perfectly located for walking into the city centre. The room was light, airy and comfortable. Loved the pool facilities. None to report.
The hotel offers a excellent location for access to Durham's shops restaurants and bars. Situated overlooking the river and millenium bridge the view is a feature of the hotel. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. I needed to ask for a second bathrobe and slippers set to be sent to the room. The room only had one dresser chair and one chair at the table within the room. This is not great if you are wanting to sit at the table and have a drink or a snack with your partner in the room.
We stayed in Durham for my daughter's commencement at Durham University. The location, room, facilities and staff were great. Comfortable lobby and bar. Our room was large and comfortable with all the amenities. Being within walking distance of the city and university was a plus. Just a short taxi to the train station from the hotel. Prices for rooms were very expensive for the week of graduation commencement, twice and three times the normal rate of other hotels and B & B's normal rate in the city. I felt that they take advantage of the occasion. If I had booked early I would have stayed in less expensive lodging.
I liked the gym and swimming facilities - was really nice to use these after a long day working. The menu for room service wasn't that great and the only other option was to come down stairs for italian food - could have been more variety and choice
very warm & inviting - comfortable and a good location
Nothing to complain about - excellent staff, rooms.food abd location
Very friendly staff and location for Durham and Newcastle The steak at dinner was tough as a boot
nice surroundings as it is situated in the middle of a golf course Bathroom needed rennovation.
The comfort and the suroundings of the hotel are wonderful. Rooms were spacious and very comfortable (just like home). The breakfast was excellent with many choices. If I was not conscious of my weight, I could have tried every thing available.
the room was cheerful and the hotel had a nice feel to it there were some dirty marks on the bedding - it could have been cleaner
The only thing I enjoyed about this hotel was leaving the next morning. There were several issues with the room. The hotel had an awful smell like an old hospital. The food and drink were terrible, tasteless, cold and expensive. Worst of all were the staff who were unapologetic about these issues and incredibly arrogant. The room we had did not reflect the pictures on the website. I will never stay or recommend this place in future.
The standard of room comfort and furnishings were excellent No pool or gym
Relaxed atmosphere with areas to sit & chill. Golf driving range great for kids. bed needs new matress, can feel springs
Staff attitude hotel surroundins rooms very adequet
Not even a bottle of water was supplied in the room
we had a good weekend the staff was brill
First rate hotel with excellent facilities and a very professional and helpful staff. Restaurant good and the student waiters excelled also. None
Room Bathroom and Service Very poor dinner and breakfast
THe room facilities were good and also had large comfortable beds in a twin room. Great view of the river from the Bedroom. Breakfast was very good with good service. Bit of a trek to the room but to be expected when a nwer building is added to an existing old building.
Very good breakfast Have provisions for children e.g. children's menu but could look into children's cutlery. When able, an refurbishment and update would be nice (in comparison with Edinburgh Marriott - November 2008)
The hotel is very well placed in the centre of Durham. Helpful staff.
Great location for sight-seeing and shopping. Lovely room.
Excellent facilities at the hotel great to have the leicure club included in the price
everything was just wonderful Parking
Very good hotel would use it again. N/A
Possibly the best hotel I have stayed in. Atmospheric, excellent staff and superb food.
Beautiful grounds & staff were excellent Room was very dark - the meals were very expensive & I found from their own website that if I had booked the stay, dinner, bed & breakfast directly with them I would have saved money.
The place is amazing, stunning building with friendly staff, and the cream teas were lovely! None
I liked the room which was nicely furnished and decorated,I also enjoyed the lovely grounds with views of the castle. The restaurant was poor, the food did not come up to the standard of the hotel, the vegetarian options were unimaginative and poor value.
The bed was boor, bathroom very old, Not good Restoration,All the room was dark color and bathroom, No internet in my room, Slow in sieves, There is ghost in the Hotel and rank in uk Number 3 of Ghost
Friendy staff, environment, good standard of room The restaurant menu was very expensive and should offer a an altenative menu, also they did not have an open internet connection.
the service was perfect in every way and the atmosphere was superb. The quality of the food served in the restaurant was also of a very high standard.
Everything Being woken up at 6.45am by a false fire alarm.
The rooms are lovely and the beds are very comfortable. The breakfast buffet was very nice with lots of fresh fruit, cheese and pastries. Good choice of fruit juices and preserves for your toast. Parking outside your room if you are staying in a courtyard room can be a little tricky and really should be reserved for the use of hotel guests not all visitors to the hotel.
The character and polite staff Being woken up by the fire alarm!!
The room, the bed, the furniture, the theme, the bathroom, the location and the staff. None
Hotel has attention to detail. Nice bathroom and shower didn't want to get out! Sufficient towels and shampoo/shower gel provided - not many hotels do this. Room very well appointed and clean. Needed a bit more lighting especially in the bathroom. Stumped my toe on the door stop as I did not see it! Perhaps remove the armchair from the Cruise room and replace with a table or chest where cases can be rested.
the room was excellent and loved the hot tub and sauna some of the pillows were stained and appeared un washed
So very different! What an experience. I asked by e-mail for some extra's and the service was excellent.
Staff were lovely, very helpful and polite. The room was fantastic. The photos do not do the room justice (Sci-Fi Room). Bed was extremely comfortable. Bathroom is through the tardis which is brilliant. Shower with sauna feature, radio feauture, massage and power jet features. Big Bath and sink, luxury toiletries. Hot tub outside is brilliant, wasn't cold even in November! And very private. Lots of gadgets around the room also. Want to go back now, loved it! I dropped some make-up in the bathroom and when I picked it up, it had a large collection of dust on it so the cleanliness wasn't up to standard there but everywhere else was immaculate. I feel that check in is too late (3pm) and check out is too early (11am). Asked for a late check out and offered more money but was refused this. Would have liked breakfast included for the price we paid. However, it is still a fabulous hotel.
Each bedroom in the hotel has a different theme, ours was 'The Cruise'. The fixture and fittings are all of high quality and the room itself was spotless. The staff are friendly and efficient. We only had breakfast in the hotel but it was excellent. On refelection I wish we had had dinner there because where we did eat ( Italian on Elvet bridge ) was absolutely dreadful. The room, though beautifully furnished, had too many things in it for its size. I could imagine parking could be a problem since there is no on site parking available. We managed to park at the 'pay and display' in the same street but if you couldn't find a place you might have a bit of a trek.
We stayed in the garden themed room, it was fantastic, especially the sauna and the hot tub! Nothing
the themed rooms no breakfast due to the snow!!!
Great reception by interested and helpful staff. A real feelgood factor when you enter the place and a very comfortable room with all that would be expected for the price. I enjoyed myself here and will be returning. Just a tad over-priced.
Very nice room (Cruella); also good food in restaurant.
Nice facilities, comfortable room, good service. Nothing.
ease of parking-friendly staff-good food and value for money we arrived at 3pm but no hot bar snacks were available-we did not need a full meal as we were dining there that evening.felt that the drinks prices were high.9perhaps its my yorkshire upbringing)
Nice ,pleasant hotel. Well laid out.
Layout of hotel good with parking outside the room. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Good value for money. Bedroom and bathroom a bit shoddy. Pumped hot water system erratic and use of shower problematical. Evening meal a little disappointing (table d'hote). These points would influence our recommendation of the hotel, but we would use the hotel again for Durham location.
The restaurant was excellent and the staff were friendly and attentive The carpet in our room (14) was very tired and dirty. The heating pipes were making noises all through the night.
Very clean. Very good breakfast. Convenient parking. Good all round. Very squeaky bed!
the evening meal was excellent shower tap was very stiff!
Faulty fire alarm at 0330 on and off for 30min.
The friendlness and helpfulness of the staff, the room layout allowing two people to move around easily and the standard of furnishings. Also the qualty of the breakfast The road noise from the old A1 which is still used by heavy traffic especially on Friday nights! Would have expected windows to have been given extra sounndproofing during the extensive renovations
Accomodation was very comfortable, evening food was excellent and also good value. If being critical, grouting around the bath was off colour / appeared dirty / looked tired. If this was thoroughly cleaned or replaced rooms could be classed as excellent.
Friendly, and a good breakfast Noisy pipe work in room nine at 6:0 am in the neighbouring room.
Quiet location No restaurant or bar on Mondays and not near any restaurants to go out to eat.
Excellent guest house with spacious rooms. A little hard to find
Good ROOM.exc breakfast No bar, nofood available sunday and monday
Large, pleasant room with v.large bathroom. Friendly staff and big breakfast. There's a dog that starts barking at about 0930 and doesn't stop all day that was opposite my room - not too bad in the week but killed any chance of a relaxing lie in at the weekend. No bar.
The Breakfasts - a good, wide choice. Good room - we liked the views. The noisy heating system. Check-in could have been more friendly; Staff did become more friendly as our stay progressed.
An amazing building, with wonderful views over the Catherdral and castle. Beautifully restored building with modern comforts. Warm as toast with a lovely welcome from the management. Stay not long enough, will stay for longer next time.A real gem of a find.
Super view of cathedral The restaurant - very pretentious Michelin aims....
Convenient distance away from the centre of Durham Yes. The first night we did not sleep a wink because of the noise of the fan and plumbing toilets etc, the noise was unacceptable. Room No.
Quietness - garden view - ground floor room, as we had heavy luggage - good sized room - staff helpfulness in giving us a lift to station when it turned out there were no taxis free - apparently this is a regular problem in Durham, of which visitors really need to be warned so they can book well in advance. We picked it largely for location near the station, combined with Victorian architecture - we found that the information we had about location was quite misleading, as it was further than we expected and roads much too steep for convenient walking with luggage either up or down. Architecture was just fine!
Room very clean and comfortable. I did not realise from booking the distance between the hotel and the health club and as it was snowing during our stay and there is not even a covered walkwasy between the 2 buildings this was very inconvenient. The fact there is no reception or other facilities in the hotel building made it necessary to travel frequently between the 2 buildings. The reception staff at the health club were very busy with health club customers so we did not feel we had their full attention, although we could not complain about the service they gave we felt a receptionist for hotel guests could have given a friendlier and more efficient service. Finally the key swipe to open the hotel door is situated on a pole which is behind you as you are facing the door, certainly not the first place we looked as we tried to get into the hotel out of a blizzard!
The beds were wonderful and everything was spotlessly clean
some damage to furniture but general I enjoyed my stay it was cold outside
Ease of check in and check out No vending machine for coffee/drinks/snacks
the room was very cold on arrival and very basic
The helpful, friendly staff 1. the limited menu at the restaurant, 2. the "kingsize" room seemed just like a normal double to me
staff were helpful Despite having booked a non smoking room - none were available - my room stank of cigarette smoke- After a trek over to the leisure centre reception I changed rooms to 'smoking optional' (sic) room which was only marginally better Breakfast in the frantically busy leisure centre was not something I would wish to repeat
This is a nice modern hotel, with nice facilities and loads to offer. highly recommended
not all people who use this hotel are into fitness, so when going for a breakfast, the choice was very ristricted to health food only. also they only had one person staying so had to ask for extra towels and pillows, these did not arrive during our stay
Friendly staff and
Location and helpful staff.
Originally looking to stay in Durham but no accomodation seemed quite what I wanted. Found this hotel when I widened search & was impressed by review scores. Enjoyed 3 great nights to finish off our holiday. Well worth the 7 or 8 mile commute into Durham. It is a beautiful building in lovely setting. Splendid bedrooms & even better bathrooms. Total luxury. Clearly geared up to functions & weddings with massive marquees in grounds but did not affect us at all. Worth checking what might be on there though. Restaurant staff excellent, well organised friendly & unpretentious. Reception staff a bit stiff lipped. Restaurant a bit pricy although good deals on some evenings.Sometimes felt as if we were intruding at breakfast & stopping staff getting on with more important things!
Proximity to country park - excellent for early mornoing run!
We were very pleased with the room we were given, having paid the price we did we fully expected to be staying in a broom cupboard!! but to be given a deluxe room was amazing.
The bedrooms are gorgeous. The location is beautiful and the staff can't do enough for you. Breakfast is excellent and the Rib Room restaurant is highly recommended. We specifically chose Hartdwick Hall as the venue for our wedding and it was perfect
The staff we met were, without exception, helpful, courteous and professional. The rooms are lovely and extremely comfortable. We also had an excellent meal in the Ha Ha, which is very tastefully decorated. We would have liked to have stayed longer and will certainly return!
The room was very comfortable and with excellent facilities and the ambience of the hotel generally speaking was very relaxing. The service at the bar was excellent. Enjoyed breakfast and the situation of the hotel is very good. When checking in the receptionist was a bit wooden, not very friendly at all and never once used the words please or thankyou, the manner was rude and it was as if we were being given commands-a big minus. The evening meal: the food was good but the service was terrible, it was slow as a snail. This I reckon was not all down to the waitress as she informed us that she was new to the job. The wine list was strange as it was either a low cost bottle of wine or a very expensive bottle. The meal must have taken about two and a half hours to serve. Furthermore the compimentary bottled water was not to be found in the room.
Very spacious room and bathroom, well appointed. friendly staff. I couldn't get internet connection in my room so phoned reception who advised they would look into it and I never heard from them again. The batteries in the TV remote weren't working so I had to use my own. Not very impressed with the room service tray charge. I was in room 105 and found staff walking passed the ground level window in the morning, which reduced my privacy
good location,quality of food
This was one of the best Best Western Hotels we have stayed in. Staff were exceptional, the room fabulous and the setting magnificent. I'm being petty by saying it would be even better with leisure facilities.
Good breakfast but too expensive at £7.75 for the Premier meal. However, staff were very helpful and charming. Very good location for the City Centre. Expensive - ie advertised rates from £29 a bit misleading as limited availability. We felt we paid far too much for a weekend at a non-luxury hotel at nearly £71 per night including breakfast. Had to book a family room as no double or twin available.
Pleasant, helpful staff. Nice food. None.
Both accomodation food and staff None
The hotel was clean and comfortable and the staff were delightful ---so cheerful and helpful.I also liked the big bath and hot water. No dislikes
Everything about this hotel gets plus marks, condition, staff, food, location all first class Not one
the location and comfort provided very friendly and helpful staff.room very clean and spacious.good breakfast set us up for the day.all in all anenjoyable break. will definitely use a premier inn in future.
Staff were extremely courteous and helpful at all times. Hotel is spotlessly clean and comfortable beds. Very close to centre of city but still quiet. Good car parking facilities in multi-storey behind hotel. Length of time taken for meals to arrive from the kitchens! Average length of wait from time of ordering was between 30 - 40 minutes, however food was very good when it did arrive. Many items on the menu were unavailable during my 6 day stay restricting choice a little.
breakfast service no problems
The staff were really helpful when we arrived to find that Booking.com had not made our booking, luckily they had a room and honoured our rate. Also breakfast really good with nice hot food, a good buffet and really friendly staff. Arriving to fing Booking.com had not made our booking.
The food. Public rooms very comfortable indeed. Staff friendly and obliging-- no exceptions. No elevator. Bedroom wasn't as comfortable as Public Rooms.
Rather tired decor; no internet access despite it being advertised
fantastic staff, the cooked breakfast was about the best I have ever had, very friendly Initial impression when approaching the hotel is not brilliant as it is in the middle of a new estate / building site
The lounge area and gardens The food was O.K but re-heated steak pies over two to three days is not good. Sometimes tables were not cleared and laid-up for breakfast. Priority was given to a wedding party one night, so we have to have a bar meal, which was O.K. but not what we expected.
Disappointed that I had to go looking for staff on arrival to book in.
noisey on nights of functions
Wonderful, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff. Delightful building, and extraordinary breakfast (I overate, but that was my fault!) The only problem was that the room was cramped. But the bed was very comfortable, the heat was correct, and everything worked well.
I liked the cosiness of the place and the warmth of the staff. I was travelling with 4 small children and i would have liked us to stay in one room but i had to leave 2 at my parents, but i think thats the same at all hotels.
Breakfasts excellent; among the best I've had in any UK or Irish hotel. Restaurant meals good to excellent (and huge). Plumbing very good - but see below. All staff unfailingly friendly, pleasant and efficient. Beer in the bar: only one cask ale, not a very good specimen (Maxim), and not in very good condition (though maybe Maxim always tastes a little vinegary.) Cost of internet access - advertised as free of charge, but in fact T-Mobile (1 hour £5, 24 hours £10, 1 month £40). Hot water not very hot late in the evening (~10:30).
Nice&helpful staff,great food!
Excellent staff and a warm friendly environment. Very good food in the pub.
The room was clean, comfortable and spacious. The pub was traditional with real ale and a good atmosphere. limited parking
Pleasant staff and good food and service. Free Wi Fi. Congratulations! Plumbing in the room is very poor. Noisy. Shower did not work at all. Had to wash in the basin. No cell phone service.
Very friendly staff. Excellent food. Not enough travel/local tourist informaiton available in hotel although staff were helpful.
The friendliness and ease that was shown by the staff.
Lovely country in with great food None
Friendly staff and warm cosy atmosphere.
Excellent breakfast, with outstanding service attitude. Button missing from light switch inside bedroom door. The plastic pin is red. And up above, on the ceiling, is a red smoke detector. Is this the fire alarm....
Quiet village location with a lovely riverside walk into Durham. Excellent food. Helpful staff.
Quiet location, fairly comfortable room, plentiful free parking, good breakfast, polite, pleasant and helpful staff. Fairly convenient for Durham. Need to be back before midnight as the hotel is then locked and you are not allowed to take a key out. The bed divan was unstable causing the bed to bang into the party wall if one turned over. This party wall was not well insulated for sound and I could hear a heavy continuous snorer next door which disrupted my sleep. The stairs to the top floor were steep and narrow. The decor was in need of renewal with peeling paintwork and frayed carpets in places.
yes - very noisy - people coming and going all night making a lot of noise and leaving attached pub
Very peaceful and quiet The bin in the bathroom had not been emptied from the previous guest. The first three bowls that I took at breakfast were all dirty as was the table when I first sat down at it.
good location, quiet Public areas not of a high standard
We loved the evening meals, and breakfast was good too. Also, the daily rate was very good value. The staff were really nice and helpful and the gardens were lovely. The room was a bit shabby and the bathroom/shower were small. In fact, the whole place is a bit in need of refurbishment but where do you start on something that's centuries old, without ruining its character. Lots of stairs too, but on the whole, the place is really quite charming.
the hotel had a restaurant too with a good value of money.
location Rooms in need of some updateing a redecorating
The staff were very helpful and ensured that had all the basic needs. Very warm and friendly
Friendly staff, Haddock and chips, big zip and link bed. I left a review on Tripadvisor, mostly positive. We found staying at Hallgarth a pleasant experience overall. Carrying suitcases upstairs, tired decor in room 1 and not being able to see my head in bathroom mirror. All these are understandable given the age of the building.
