9.3 Excellent
Pros: Everything else! Very kind owner, great ambiance, the Japanese style room is formidable.
Cons: The room was very noisy! Also, the hostel has very small doors and hallways. I am 181cm, I had the bow down a lot to walk through the doors.
9.3 Excellent

Cons: Most above average..But small shower room.
10.0 Excellent

9.3 Excellent
Pros: The host was awesome! He was really helpful in recommending the local non touristy spots which I was looking for.
Cons: Whilst it is near to Shin Kobe Station, it is a distance away from Sannomiya station which was where I accessed and exited Kobe - not a major issue through.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner who is married with young kids. Puts his heart and soul and great effort into this hostel. Extremely hospitable and accommodating. Always goes the extra mile when service is concerned highly recommend

9.3 Excellent
Pros: I loved everything, the shower was okay, the stuff were friendly and helpful, the bed was extremely comfy, the room was big and well accessoried. The place was right next to the JR station and local street market food and shops. Great place to stay.
Cons: Didn't like the light coming through the window, and the location. There was nothing to go to by walking and had to take the JR everywhere
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Guys at reception were super friendly. Very spacious twin room so it's worth paying for it. Off Sannomiya, the center of Kobe but in good location, great access to Mt Maya and Rokko. They will rent you the free pass for a cable car and gondra to go up Mt Maya. Tadanori Yokoo Museum is the bonus in the neighborhood. Great bakery for breakfast nearby.
9.4 Excellent
Pros: Maya is a beautifully designed guest house. The owners put a lot of thought into re-purposing an old doctors office into a cozy place for travellers. There are many design elements made or displayed from medical equipment. As a nod to Mount Maya they even incorporated salvaged wood from the mountain for the interior design. I loved the view from the front window lounge and enjoyed listening to staff and travellers play guitar and sing in the relaxing rotunda space at the back. The owners and staff are super cool people. Thank you Park, Bob, Lai, Yone, Sugi, Ari, Konomi and Yu.
Cons: The bunk by the window can be chilly when the weather is cold because it’s an old building, but there are extra blankets to keep warm. Noise travels easily so the times guests were enjoying late night chatting and music we had to be careful not to be too loud. Maybe there’s a way to put some sound insulation in the building in future plans.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The facilities were great, staff was super friendly and there was a common room to meet other awesome travelers!
Cons: I didn't like having to leave... :(
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was huge for a hostel with a queen size bed which is very comfortable. Toilets and shower rooms are very clean. Many small eateries and bakeries in the area. The staff are exceptional. Very friendly and kind.
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great community! Friendly staff! Loved m stay here. Definitely took advantage of their tours!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Staff are super friendly and they really encourage the guest to connect to each other. The facilities are comfortable.
Cons: The air in my room was super dry due the air conditioner. I would be great having a humidifier :)
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff were so friendly and professional. The bed is very comfortable with good design and you won't be easily bothered by others. I met a German lady and we went to lunch together and had interesting discussions. I met a Japanese friend who came to watch a football match and we talked quite a lot.
Cons: One thing I don't quite like is that the common area is not on the first floor but on the 6th floor. Staff need to clean that area every day from 11 am to 3 pm, which means that you won't be able to have many chances to chat with other people staying at the hostel. Usually when you are back after 8 pm, there are not too many people upstairs. I feel that utility rate of the area is a bit low for those who want to socialize and meet friends.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Lovely place, well setup for travellers. Great design sense in the renovation of this building. Extremely helpful staff who obviously like being there and enjoy people.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is amazing! Wonderful community and really authentic feeling; explore markets, restaurants, onsen etc all next door. Staff and owner are wonderful, so friendly and welcoming! Go on the food tour, it's amazing! In fact take all recommendations from staff. You won't regret it. Extremely cosy, great for meeting people, clean and very comfortable.
Cons: Nothing. Note it's a quiet and much less touristy corner of Kobe (though still very central) but this was exactly what I wanted.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was delicious. It's transportation service was very good.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The service was prompt. The hot spring was enjoyable. We would love to go there again!
6.8 Good
Pros: Private onsen for booking is good
Cons: Most employees are non- Japanese and their service attitude in general is good but not truly an authentic Japanese hospitality
5.0 Okay
Pros: The room is clean and the bed is comfortable.
Cons: The private onsen water was warm and not hot enough at night time and it was fine only during the day. This forfeited the purpose of paying a premium to book a room with a private bath if there’s limitation on the time that we could enjoy the onsen. We stayed in the other private onsen with similar pricing in Japan and the others were much better as compared to this one. We also tried one of the 4 private onsens (private onsen #3) at the hotel for the guest to book. The onsen water was warm and even worse than the one in the room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Service at this ryokan was excellent. The front desk spoke English. We had shuttle service from the bus stop (had the Information Office call) to the ryokan and we could be dropped off and picked up anywhere as they gave us a phone to call after we checked in. The shuttle driver heard us saying that we were having trouble walking with the geta they lent out so he hurried into the ryokan before we got out and handed us our regular footwear. We had free drinks--coffee, tea, juice--and popsicle in the lobby from 3 to 11pm. There were public baths and 4 private outdoor baths sized to accommodate groups or couples or singles with two types of healing waters. The breakfast was awesome. We had a room to ourselves. We sat at a table, on chairs. There was a set Japanese and a Western breakfast. There were many choices and lots to eat. The western style had a lot of meat. The Japanese style was like a kaiseki with many small dishes each with their individual taste. Although the ryokan is located on a slope, it was not too difficult to negotiate a quick trip to town. Because of the price, it was a once in a lifetime experience for us but relaxing and well worth it.
Cons: Can't think of anything I disliked.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I wish I had more time to stay and enjoy a bit longer there.
Cons: None
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Private Onsen bath in your room
Cons: Not being able to see outside into the city from your room. Having to eat the meals downstairs instead of in your room. No gift shop!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The shuttle service was great, super convenient. The staff and service were really friendly and accommodating. The 11 course dinner and breakfast was delicious!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The service was excellent- from the staff who picked us up from the bus station, the staff who checked us in and all the other staff who attended to us during our stay. The room was big and comfortable and the breakfast was yummy!
Cons: We were given a list of restaurants but we arrived on a Wed and most of the restaurants on the list are closed on Wed- so that was a bit disappointing. Although when we walked around we did find food to eat. Maybe the hotel could time its restaurants closing on those days most of the outside restaurants are closed, so at least we would be assured of a possible food source.

Cons: N/A
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The house is so traditional and services in good manner, you will definitely relax and enjoy your stay here. Hot spring is available for long period, quite convenient.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Everything was perfect! Lovely stay and I really appreciated the integration of Japanese culture.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: A relaxing, cultural experience. They've thought of many details to ensure that their guests feel pampered and relaxed. The rooms feel authentic and you're invited to wear Yakata (traditional Japanese robes) during your stay. We didn't use the public baths but the private baths were great. We were spoilt for dinner and breakfast - each included about 3 or 4 courses, which was a great look into a traditional set meal. They weren't our tastiest meals but we still enjoyed them.
Cons: Not much to dislike. Note that the private baths are not on site- it is a 5 minute walk up the hill behind the Ryokan. The Arima area is not very close to the main Kobe area which is probably no problem when you're looking for a getaway at an Onsen.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: a very high-quality traditional hotel which makes you feel special. everything was well done: from greetings to dinner and then to onsen and to sleep overnight. you basically don't need to care about anything, amazing staff will arrange it all for you. and especially we like the dinner and having a coffee in the morning in the library section which looked like a king's palace, no less! wearing yukata was also an experience. It was amazing to dive into slow quiet traditional life after busy Tokyo life.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The staff were friendly, responsive and clearly took a lot of care and pride in their work. It felt like an honor to stay there! We really enjoyed putting on our yukata and really experiencing this property as our reason for being in Arima Onsen. Their onsen facility is beautiful, the room was comfortable and the food was awesome! We really felt like we got a taste of traditional Japanese hospitality.
7.0 Good
Cons: we booked a Mountain View room, but it was not. The kitchen is closed already at 8:30pm
6.8 Good
Pros: Staff are excellent.
Cons: Breakfast was average - do not recommend. The beds on the floor were also not very comfortable. The onsen layout was not so great. The hotel also did not have a snack bar.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: environment,hotel service is fabulous
Cons: Suggest more staff speak English or other language
9.3 Excellent
Pros: the dinner is extravagant and breakfast is pure Japanese, food setting is beautiful, services and food are both exceeding expectations. the onsen is wonderful, they have ice cold bath and golden onsen is the best.
Cons: it is an onsen hotel there is no shower in the room which is perfectly fine, however the toilet is very tight
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Due to various reasons, I could only book a room without dinner, only breakfast. But then, what a breakfast! It is easily a lunch, and delicious!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The people, the food. More than awesome
7.0 Good
Pros: Room with open-air bath, public bath and foot bath. Water pressure for shower was good. Shuttle service.
Cons: Staff at check-in counter, who brought us to our room, & dining staff, could not speak English, or barely. When I tried to enquire about ryokan’s shuttle to Ropeway Arima Onsen Station, front desk staff without saying anything, handed me 2 tickets. LOL my error assuming they were complimentary till payment at check-out. Not expensive (1100¥) but would have been nice to be told they were not complimentary. Have stayed in other hotels which gave complimentary loop bus passes or tickets to local attractions. Meal times were a problem too - staff went through motion of rattling off in Japanese, food descriptions which would have been ok if the kaiseki menu had items written in English. Unfortunately not for this ryokan. Have stayed in other ryokans which made a great effort to have both Japanese and English. Only 9 of 17 rooms were occupied yet staff hurriedly went through the motion of serving and never once refilled our tea. But the worse impression of service was the day before our check-out. We enquired at front desk about JR bus service from Arima Onsen to Kobe - whether he could check for us if we could buy bus ticket at time of boarding bus, and price of ticket. We were shocked by his response! He said “this is the company phone, you call from your phone”. In the first place, “company” phone was the hotel’s phone. Secondly, this was a local call to JR office in Arima Onsen town and not overseas call! I explained to his colleague my request. He conversed with the staff who had responded us rudely, who then went to back room to make the call. I told his colleague that this is a local call and more importantly, I can’t speak Japanese so how would I be able to get the info over the phone? This was ¥72000 per room night ! Overall, did not enjoy stay here compared to stays at Beniya Mukayu, Aburaya Tousen, Yunoshimakan, Honjin Hiranoya Annex - great service & “A” for effort. Do not recommend staying here if you don’t speak Japanese and care about service.
7.5 Good
Pros: meals were delicious, exceeded my expectations.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: 13 rooms only. Only a few persons or you alone in the enjoyable public onsen with free drinks and ice lollipops. Free hotel transfer. Call them by coin phone (10-100 yen) at the train station. We got off at the JR expressway bus station. Turn back, down the road and turn right and walk 2 mins to the train station. Friendly staff.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great staff and service. The hot spring is very nice. Location is private and convenient. Outstanding food comes with cute performances.
Cons: Wish more staff speak English and food comes with English menu.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent food/beautiful garden setting/close to mountain trails and so on
Cons: None
7.5 Good
Pros: A cozy place with friendly staff! It's not a very big hotel but the atmosphere is pretty relaxing. They do provide shuttle service from the station to hotel. Decent room size with our own private hot spring, along with complimentary drinks and snacks, wonderful! All toiletries were nicely prepared. All our meals were very very impressive! Very tasty and filled with surprises. Wish they had more English speaking staff or menus/promo flyers in English so we could understand more.
Cons: The only down side was we had a little hard time communicating in English. All menus and other promotional materials are all in Japanese, which could be something to considerate improving.

Pros: The place was very clean and quiet. The sleeping "capsule" was spacious enough to fit almost all my clothes and small items, plus it has a small locker for more valuable things. Hostel is located very close to the main shopping street and Kobe port, but still on a smaller street, so it was quiet at night. There's a subway station just across the street, and it takes about 10 min walk to get to JR and Hanshin Motomachi stations. You can use wasching machine and dryer. Cons: The hotel was evasive on the cost for everything and doubled the room rate quoted by your site.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Good service! Good food! Excellent hot spring!!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: very comfortable bed,nice bath!
7.5 Good
Pros: - friendly staff; - made reservation for 1 quad but was able to change to 2 separate rooms at last minute at small additional charge; - quick shuttle service
Cons: - there's a constant strong smoking smell despite that no one in either room smoke - "non-smoking" room doesn't exist but if someone smokes outside the ventilation is not sufficient to dispel the smell; - facilities are very dated especially for the amenities in the room, the bathroom especially - they expect everyone to use the spring baths; - we had a corner room and there's no curtain on one side to block out the light; - wifi is very weak, you had to be close to the entrance to get some decent connection; - food is just so so, lots of jello-coated items, we had better in Atami and Takachiho
8.0 Excellent
Cons: Wifi is too weak..

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Dinner and breakfast were awesome.
Cons: The main hot spring water spa was in another building. So we had to walk outside.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The excellent care by the staff was beyond any expectation that I could have imagined. The rides to and from the train station, bus station other hotels and attractions around the town was so helpful and unexpected and it made our vacation so much more enjoyable because it was extra easy to get around.
Cons: There’s nothing we didn’t like.
7.5 Good
Pros: The meals, service, and the facilities (especially the bath in Hanamusbi) are superb. There were not many guests during my visit, so the bath was all ours. Do not miss the dinner.
Cons: 1. All the mattresses they had in the room were all filthy with blood and urine stains. When I complained about it, the staff reported that they put covers on them which are thoroughly cleaned. It still felt bad sleeping on it though. 2. I wanted to make a change in a room type (from only breakfast included to both breakfast and dinner included). The staff was not very responsive to my request and had troubles understanding it. It took me three weeks to get what I wanted. 3. Difficulties communicating in English in general. No English menu in writing for dinner. 4. I emailed prior to my arrival that I would like a bus to pick us up at a particular time. No one came and because I was not able to call them, I had to climb the hills with my luggage to get to the hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly and welcoming staff, location near to the main shopping street (comfortable 2 - 3 minutes), and the onsen facilities
Cons: None
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The dinner and breakfast was fantastic.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Tofu is very good :)
7.0 Good
Pros: The friendliness of the owner
Cons: The onsen facilities. To get a bath in iron water one hes to walk uphill, in the cold. When getting there the baths is disappointedly small . The iron bath can only fit comfortably 2 persons. Besides, I disgustingly experienced a Chenise man with his 6-7 yrs old son dipping into the clear water pool without pre-washing and a group of 3 Chenise men doing the same. I was in the the iron pool so they could not fit in and they they headed dor the clear water pool. i had to leave the complex, and going baxk to Notori for the clear water pool. The hote owner has to teach Chinese tourists how to take a bath in onsens, otherwiise we would end up bathing in Chinese pissess. Gone was the day when only Japanese gentlemen visit onsens.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast is scrumptious. Great! "Silver" bath is available in the ryokan. For "golden" bath, we need to walk to the other bigger hotel, it was bigger and more bath pools in that property, which was a great deal! For those who book with dinner, dinner is served in the other hotel. It is fun to wear the bath rope and wooden sandal around/to the other hotel. Storage of luggage before check-in and after check-out is possible and it is free of charge.
Cons: The receptionist could barely speak English. Information is printed on a paper with multiple languages for guests' convenient, but other requests/communication is a bit hard to achieve. Transfer to/from bus/train station is only limited to 3pm for check-in and 10am for check-out. If you arrive/depart at other timing than the stipulated time by the ryokan, you will need to walk about 7-10 mins from/to the stations. Not particularly far but it is uphill towards the ryokan. Kindly take note.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Super nice staff Free shuttle-bus in arima area

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful place to rest and relax. Nice to have onsen bath on property as an option. Staff most welcoming and gracious.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were extremely kind. Free taxi service was available whenever we wished. The exterior and interior of the building are beautiful traditional Japanese style, but the facilities are modern. The hotel was very quiet; only 9 rooms. The breakfast was excellent (unique western breakfast available for ¥500 extra). The signs in the bathroom were in 5 languages. Very convenient for elderly or disadvantaged people.
Cons: The only minus point is that BS TV is not available.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: excellent food cooked in a beautiful traditional open plan kitchen. ability to have the onsen to yourselves which is not possible in all ryokan
Cons: wifi signal was pretty weak
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Superb dinner course! We enjoined a real first-class kaiseki experience delivered by the team led by chef Matsuoka-san, a kind gentlemen and extremely dedicated to offering only the highest possible service to his guests. All the other staff were also genuinely friendly and customer-oriented all the time. Check-in / check-out hours very flexible. Both of the hot spring rooms inside the ryokan were spacious and wonderful to enjoy, especially the one with the iron kettle tub. Great value for money given onsen-ryokan tend to be expensive in Japanese hot spring areas!
Cons: Room was averagely spacious and we could follow the conversations of the guests upstairs and the couple nextdoors. Only 2 hotspring bathing rooms available inside the ryokan, of which the one with the iron kettle tub was occupied most of the time. However, a stay includes free entrance to the hot spring of a ryokan down the road, which makes up for this inconvenience.
7.5 Good
Pros: The hotel is beautiful, staff nice and helpful, fantastic dinner.
Cons: Our beds in the Japanese style room were incredibly uncomfortable. They are not futon beds but something more towards hospital beds to help people with physical impairments or the elderly, which would be ok, if the mattresses were not the worst I have tried in years.

Pros: The hotel was absolutely amazing! The rooms were spotless and the staff were so fantastic, nothing was too much trouble. We were checked in by the manager who was just brilliant, on explaining that the airline had lost our cases she gave me toiletries to use which was a god send. They also left little cakes in our room as it was our wedding anniversary during our trip. I cannot rate this place highly enough, amazing stay, wish we could have stayed for longer!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our family enjoyed the waterfront location of the hotel even though we had a mountainside view. The staff was amazing. From the person who greeted us at the door to the man who took our luggage to our room (who spoke immaculate English) to the super friendly reception and dining staff, we felt like we were treated as royalty. We have been struck by the high level of customer service in Japan, but this hotel takes it up another notch. The room was huge by Japanese standards, well appointed and extremely comfortable. I would definitely choose this hotel again were I to return to Kobe.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very nice location and an incredible view. The breakfast was a great combination between Western and Japanese.
Cons: All in all the 'look' of the hotel is a bit 1970s. Somewhat 'fresher' and more modern colours would do it some good. Then again, maybe that's also some of the charm of the hotel.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast on the third floor is fabulous. A view of Kobe Harbor is there with sun and wind. The room service is wonderful and capable.
10.0 Excellent

Pros: Very pleasant overall and convenient for our reaching the Princess cruise ship the next day. We actually saw the ship arriving at the berth from our hotel window.
Cons: Not disappointment more than surprise, that the younger Japanese staff spoke very little English.
5.8 Okay
Pros: The bed are comfortable and the room large.
Cons: My room on the lower floor city view so a little bit train noise. And the hotel guests cannot enjoy the hotel facilities, we must extra pay the money, and very expensive if we go to swimming we will pay about ¥3800 per one part.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Room was spacious and very comfortable. Amenities were excellent. Staff were delightful and extremely helpful. Great shuttle service to the JR station and town centre.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Facilities and location.
Cons: Extremely hard beds. Asked for extra covers to sleep on but it was like sleeping on a rock. Very dated rooms.

9.3 Excellent
Pros: Great room with nice views! Excellent food with good taste! I will come back woon.
Cons: It was difficult to understand the kaiseki buffet system for us. I think tha it's better to prepare the manual of usage about kaiseki buffet for foreigners.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Gorgeous room, incredibly comfortable and very spacious. Lovely rooftop onsen and wonderful buffet for breakfast and dinner.
Cons: shuttle to Shin Kobe station would be very helpful as using the subway is tricky with luggage
7.5 Good
Pros: Definitely worth booking at least 2 nights if you wish to relax in Kobe. Hotel provides a shuttle to Sannomiya Station. Walking distance (abt 15-20mins) to Port of Kobe Tower, Meriken Park and malls around that area.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The onsen was really amazingly good.
Cons: The view of our room was on the opposite side of the port. We were hoping to have the port view.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Wow! Where do I start? The staff are very accomodating and proactive, delivering 5-star customer service. The views from the room were spectacular. We asked to have rooms close by to one another & they certainly delivered! We were able to drop our bags off before check in and they carried it up to our rooms. The rooftop onsen is a must.
Cons: The onsen ren is located far from the station. It's in a quiet area by the bay, we wish we knew that there was a shuttle bus operating from the train to the hotel.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The dinner was fabulous.
Cons: I have to pay more to get a magnificent view.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: nice view, clean and spacious bath.

Cons: N/a
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful onsen (hot springs) (one of the best onsen in Japan), good location, comfortable room
Cons: Only few vegetarian dishes in the restaurant (dinner and breakfast buffet)
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The rooms are very large and clean. The have many hot spring baths, which are well maintained and monitored. The buffet staff is amazingly friendly and efficient.
Cons: The location is out of the way. The nearest train station is approx. 15-20 minutes away on foot. There Is nothing to do or see right around the hotel. Meriden Park is a 15 minute walk. While the restaurant staff is amazing (among the best we’ve ever experienced), the front desk staff needs training. As an example, we asked two simple questions about the Shin-Kobe station. After conferring with each other in Japanese, one said, “sorry we don’t know.” There was no offer to check or to try to assist. The lobby was entirely empty, and so it was not like they were so busy helping others that they couldn’t help us. I was surprised by this experience because at other hotels in Japan, the hotel front desk staff bent over backwards to help and find answers for us. The same staff also stood by and watched my wife and me lug 4 suitcases to the cab.
