The really nice and welcoming greeting of aloha from the tall young man at the front desk. I wish I could remember his name, I believe it was a hawaiian name, he really made my stay as well as my other family members rooming on different floors right at home. Lack of parking spaces, and longer valet service.
I was there for business so unfortunately, I did not have a chance to enjoy the amenities or meals at the hotel. The room was large and comfortable. The staff that I did encounter (only checking in and checking out) was pleasant and shared the feeling of aloha. The view was lovely, even if we did not have an ocean view. The wi-fi in the room was not free. I ended up using my hotspot to connect, which was necessary for my business. There was not an ice machine on my floor and not sign or notice in the room where to find it. At that time, I didn't want to call or go look for a machine on another floor. It would also be nice to have a separate light switch for the toilet/shower so I would not disturb my co-worker when I woke up early to get ready. I ended up using the flashlight on my phone.
It was a very clean hotel room. Comfortable settings. I did not see anything that I did not like.
The hallways and rooms smelled like smoke. There was a dead spider on one of the beds. You could hear everything from voices, lanai sliders opening and closing to doors slamming.
Wonderful setting with water views Excellent restaurant
Breakfast buffet was extremely expensive, even with the discount, and food was terrible. Pancakes too hard to cut- yes, could not cut with a fork! Pancakes, bacon, and sausage were cold. Potatoes were OK. $18.00 for cold, hard food.
cockroach in room and bedbug bites on my legs
The food at the restaurant was good. There were too many cats running around near the property.
Nice enough. Probably the best Hilo has to offer. Needs some love. The elevator noise from our top floor room was a bit much and we were a few doors down from the elevator shaft.
The staff was nice. The room just o.k. The room was tiny and for the price was a bit of a rip off. The balcony didn't lock. One of the smallest rooms I've stayed in and the bathroom reminded me of a hotel 6.
Beautiful view. Very accommodating staff.
The hotel brags of.being part.of.the only Hawaiian owned hotel group. It has some pretty courtyards and the pool is ok. The attached restaurant is convenient and the rooms are affordable. They have laundry facilities onsite which we liked because we travelled with carry on only for a ten day trip. Also, it is located on Banyan drive, where the walk is amazing. After walking that road, we decided we had the right hotel if we were staying on that strip. The others were a bit intimidating to walk by, we thought. The rooms themselves are a bit run down. Clean, bit run down. The desk staff were not particularly friendly. Children playing in the pool were using tiles they found from the pool wall for diving and the poolcould be cleaner around the rim. Some of the rooms feel like you are in a cave. We were happier when we moved to the second floor.
The restaurant attached to it. Food was good and staff were friendly. The room was damp and the carpet was too old.
The location next to the airport was nice. It is within a reasonable walk to downtown Hilo. The hotel feels old and could use some renovation. It was also very hard to find our room. Breakfast doesn't start until 7am, so we missed it due to an 8am flight.
Location close to Hilo Airport
Economical, friendly and helpful staff, close to garden and Coconut Island. Windows are unsealed glass vents so there will be various common bugs that share your room, including small roaches. Nothing compared to a cabin in the woods, but those with bug phobia may be concerned.
Clean. Great breakfast, not just continental breakfast. Friendly, helpful staff. Nice laundry. Convenient to everything. Close to airport. Very Affordable. We will refer everyone to this Hotel.
Location of the hotel and its surroundings is beautiful. Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. Room that we got was not one of the best. On one side there is a road/highway and other side there is pool. Constant noise from both sides. Room electrical needs improvement. One switch turns on bathroom and other lights which can be disturbing for other persons in the room. These are minor things.
the hotel is a good value - it is an old building but well kept. The front rooms have a nice ocean view with balcony. Being in Banyan Drive it is a nice walking area. No elevator - must carry luggage up stairs
Convenience for personal business and non-resort hotel accommodations.
No elevator to 2nd floor = tough to get suitcase upstairs.
The check in time was like 12 noon. I arrived 7 in the morning and could not find a place to rest up before check in time. The hotel must advance the the customer that they can't check us in before actual check in time. When I got to the restaurant nobody attended to me while I was given a seat for almost 20 minutes.
The grounds were gorgeous. The hot tub was relaxing and romantic. The accommodations were comfortable and homelike. The breakfast of nutbread tropical fruit and juice was delicious. But the best thing about our stay was how much the hosts Garret and Sandy went out of their way to help us. All their recommendations regarding places to eat and things to do were spot on. They even went so far as to set up a special wifi connection so we could stream a movie in our cottage. Super excellent. No complaints.
place was nice until...(see cons) Watch out for the paranoid, super-sensitive owner who claimed we smoked in the place...which we did NOT do...1 person smoked outside and didn't want to throw the butts on the ground so brought them in, put them under water, and then into the trash can. Owner claimed the smoke smell was so horrific that she had to wash everything in the place, including the curtains...and that the next night's renters refused to rent when they walked in so she lost rent...how can that be since we hadn't been gone very long and checkin isn't until 3:00PM and by 12:30 the owner had slapped our card with a $200 cleaning fee! She said the bathroom reeked, but the butts were placed in the trash near the front door. I am allergic to cigarette smoke, but had no reaction to any smoke inside because there was NONE.
The location to volcanoes national park is excellent Free parking and internet are included A wonderful continental breakfast is included for your stay. Bathroom is large and clean. The carpet is old, stained and does not appear to be cleaned. Could feel the springs of the bed at night. Television only played one channel on a loop Limited arrival information.
I liked the private entrances, the hosts were very informative and gave great recommendations of what to see while on the island. The lava tube tour was really cool! It was amazing to have something like that in your backyard! Everything was great.
The location The humidity
Location on the harbor and views are excellent. Close proximity of the city of Hilo affords multitides of restaurant and shopping choices.
Location. The new interiors, where available, are very nice. Renovation is not yet complete so lobby, elevators not operating very well. Our room had been renovated but the bathroom pocket door did not work as it was hung crooked. The bathroom vent did not work.
The only good thing about this hotel is that the rooms (or at least the one I stayed in) are modern and updated. Views are nice from most rooms. Do not be fooled by the word "resort" in the name. This was once a resort but is now basically just a motel. Most of the property is overgrown and abandoned. The one remaining swimming pool was closed during my stay. Grounds are a mess. Work seems to be underway but also appeared to be in a state of inactivity. Lobby is full of abandoned spaces (former stores, spa, etc.). "Restaurant" has cheap patio chairs mismatched to tables, so that if you sat back the table would be at your chin.
View from a room I stayed was so nice. An air conditioner in my room was so noisy.
Great location in Hilo Ample parking Clean, recently renovated rooms A 50 minute wait to check in One person working at the front desk while other staff walked around not helping The frogs nearby will keep you up all night Rooms are quite spartan
The room was nice, no real complaints about it or the hotel. Except. There was a metal clanging from the elevator that is right beside the room. It's loud and wakes you up. It needs to be addressed. Perhaps it's already in the works.
Rural setting. Nice well kept estate surrounded by rain forest. Finding the Lava Tree state park sign at night is difficult. Restaurants and amenities are a few miles distant.
The hostess goes out of her way to please and help her guests. The rooms very clean with fresh orchids. Breakfast very healthy with fresh home grown products. I gave her my laundry and she did it within the day (extra charge, which is OK for me) We were very pleased with the accommodation and service. The unpaved road was a little rough but we drove carefully with our regular car and made it even after strong rain.
Beds were comfortable. Good location. The place was outdated and dirty. The bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months. We spent over a $100 for the night and the place was old and dirty. For this cost I would expect a more updated and certainly clean hotel room. The breakfast had muffins, toast and coffee. Not really much of a breakfast. The attached store offered few options for food as they were out of quite a few things. The frogs are a serious concern even with ear plugs.
Close to the airport, right on the bay, nice staff (average). Such a dirty place! Couldn't believe the condition of the bathroom - mold everywhere, nasty stains on the walls, etc. The carpet throughout was probably never shampooed once in the 30+ years this place has been in operation. Being in this hotel was like being in a time machine set for 1979. Several parts of the lounge have been shut down completely. The view from the room was a disgrace. The people who work there are nice enough, but certainly not too busy to add a coat of paint or change the lobby flower arrangements (neither of which have been given consideration for a very long time). The room was terribly overpriced, and from the photos I had expected more. I'm so glad we only booked for one night!
Checking in was easy and fast. The staff was friendly! The room smelled musky. The carpet was grimy and so was the covers. It made us itch. No coffee maker.
Was the dirtiest filthiest motel I've ever stayed in The frogs are screaming all night the place is a mess I'll never go back
Was very pleased with my stay. Location is steps to Hilo Bay, next to the Queen Lili'uokalani garden right on Banyan Dr. Gregg at the desk was very pleasant and helpful. Slightly older facility, and the tree frogs do quiet down after midnight. Good value.
Location Old, stinky, falling apart...literally. would not recommend to anyone.
Well, it is old and dirty, mold every where. I did not get what I booked for. The worst is the coqui frogs killing me. I have to cancelled my second day booking and move to next door. After moving to next door, Ninalao hotel I can really tell the different. Overall, I definitely felt I was over charged for the stay in Uncle Billy. No more there.
Nothing The broken toilet seat, the ants coming out of the sink, broken sliding door, hair in the bath tub and the general mold. That was just in the room. The rest of it was run down and not maintained. We should have been paid to stay there
Air condition The service staff was unorganized took one hr to check in..
Location Price Check in was fast Check out was fast Hot water is very hot. Room was spacious. Spotty almost non-existent Wi-Fi connection First room we checked into had not been cleaned, we had to go back to the front to let them know they had checked us into a room that had not been cleaned. Asked that the person who parked so close to my in-laws come down to move their car, person wasn't a registered guest, front desk did nothing, ignored us until we walked away. Parking spaces were too small. If you are not at your hotel by 5 p.m all the parking spots will be taken by other people, even if they aren't registered at the hotel, they don't check, so you will be stuck parking on the side of the street. Not enough outlets to plug in our phones. Other outlet in bathroom was loose and couldn't hold the cord for charge.
