The Covington Houseboat - Saint Paul - Building
2
9.6 Excellent (71 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Stay the night on the Mississippi River – literally – at the Covington Inn. This houseboat is trimmed stem to stern in mahogany, brass and bronze, extending to guests the elegant comfort once reserved aboard historic work vessels for company executives and VIPs. Windows and portals in the boat's tiered design draw light into each room. Sleeping quarters feature a mix of ingenious built-in cabinets with simple furnishings from the Covington's work era. Salvaged fixtures, nautical antiques and historic art provide tasteful reminders of the river and the inn's past life. Sitting permanently moored within the reflection of downtown St. Paul's towering skyline, The Capitol, museums, theater, fine dining and shopping wait just across the bridge. Offering a place for both a quiet getaway and the city spree, the Covington does it all. Beyond the privacy of the staterooms, the salon provides a comfortable gathering place. Lit with clerestory windows and furnished with fireside couches and window-front tables, the salon offers a great place for breakfasting, letter writing and browsing through the Covington library of historic river and shipping books. Our breakfasts, cooked in the boat's galley, pamper you with just a touch of the gourmet while fueling a full-day's exploration.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was by far the best I've ever had in either a hotel or a bed and breakfast. Liz is the perfect hostess, she took such good care of us! She listened to my husband's old jokes, and even laughed. She made an excellent recommendation for a Mexican meal. She even let us spoil her adorable dog. For dog lovers like us, being able to pet Jay Jay was an added perk.
Cons: The weather was the only thing that wasn't perfect. We had one cold rainy day, but even then it was fun to sit in our cozy room and watch the river.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was excellent with a broad array of options.
Cons: Spare roll of toilet paper in the room. I was choosing to not have housekeeping (to be able to contribute a few $$ toward St. Jude's) which left the toilet paper a little sparse by the end of 3 day stay.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: scenery - able to watch airport activity. Easy check in from 3rd floor. Cool decor
Cons: parking - walk long ways from parking to lobby.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Decor was modern and appealing.
Cons: They did not plan for enough shuttles and 3 different staff gave us 3 different solutions to the problem. It ended up working out OK, as they found another shuttle, but the first response was “Sorry we are booked.” As convenience was the only reason I booked there, it was not a suitable response.

Cons: The pub restaurant was OK but the atmosphere was uncomfortable.
9.3 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: I will never shut up about how amazing this place is. Been on a road for three weeks driving through USA and omg this place is so beautiful. I will come back soon and will recommend this place to everyone. Rooms are spacious, clean and beds are some of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever laid in. Pillows are magical. Bathroom and the whole entire room and hotel is spotless clean. It’s magical place. Mall of America is few minutes away and hotel provides a free shuttle. Airport is right next door too and we saw planes take off all day! Couldn’t hear them but we saw them. Best sleep I had in last three weeks. Wow!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The lounge are was a blast! So many games/activities to do - not just the usual pool table and foosball but life size Scrabble, carpet pool, at least 50 board games to choose from. Upscale/upbeat atmosphere. Great for kids too!
Cons: When I booked a hotel in this area I did not expect to pay for parking, I was very disappointed to find out hotel guests had to pay the regular airport parking rate ($29/day). I understand it's the only place to park, it was just a surprise.
6.8 Good
Cons: The nearly $200 "room" I rented didn't come with a bed! They gave me and my two kids half a suite with a pull-out sofa!
7.5 Good
Pros: The beds were comfy.
Cons: We were wrongly charged $87.00 for a $45.00 meal at the grill that we paid for in cash and tipped the waitress generously (like 21%). When I called the Billing department i was on hold for a LONG time, the lady was short with me when she spoke to me, and I couldn't hear or understand her. She told me there was nothing she could do for me and she hung up on me when I was still talking to her. When we came back to the hotel the receptionist helped us and said we would get a full refund for that $87.00. I am still waiting for my refund. But the stay itself was great.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: The front desk staff is amazing
Cons: We stayed 3 nights and they didn’t take out the garbage the entire stay
6.8 Good
Cons: The two people working the front desk seemed very rude. First there must have been a mistake through the booking agency and the names were switched around between the guest and myself which I made the reservation. The lady proceded to tell me that I screwed up and I shouldn't use a booking site. Then when I asked if it was possible to leave my car at the hotel as we would be returning from our flight 4 days later and possibly staying another night at your hotel the lady rudely said that "I cant just stay there for free" instead of explaining the cost to park there. I then decided that I will just pay to park at the airport and not stay in your hotel upon our return.

Pros: The hotel was very clean and quiet. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were good sized. We enjoyed the pool facilities, like the rest of the hotel the pool area was very clean. Fresh cookies in the evening!
Cons: The setup of the breakfast area could use some improvement. Most of the hot breakfast items required a microwave or the waffle iron and the lines to use these would block other breakfast item access and the tables right by the breakfast items. The selection for breakfast items also wasn't as good as some other places.

Cons: The breakfast.

Pros: We were flying in from Boston into Minnesota to visit Mall of America and had booked our hotel stay at the Hilton almost two months prior. The week we were scheduled to fly in there was a huge storm in MN. I was in constant communication with the hotel and they assured us our reservation would stay intact and I was grateful for that. We had no intention of renting a vehicle but instead use the complimentary shuttle service to commute back and fourth from the hotel to the mall. All the shuttle drivers were personable, prompt, and professional. The grounds, lobby, restaurant, and bar areas were in impeccable. Everyday we came down to the lobby area there was a new batch of different fruit infused water( that was always a nice treat). We did room service for one night out of our 4 night stay and the delivery time was quicker than expected and the food was good (burger, pizza, and beer). Our family of 3 required special accommodations upon check out and The Hilton had no reservations about fufilling our request. The shuttle drivers, front desk, and the manager all welcomed us back in the future and we hope to do just that (in warmer weather of course). Thank you Hilton-Bloomington

7.0 Good
Pros: Price, location, free breakfast, pool, wi-fi
Cons: Wasnt informed of the 20.00 hold for incidentals per room. I had to call and get this information after reviewing my pending charges. I am told the hold is removed after 72 hours and the charges are reversed.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Our purpose was Mall of America so the walking distance was perfect. The room was clean and spacious with amazing vanity lighting. The breakfast had plenty to choose from.
Cons: Room was non-smoking but still smelled like it had been a smoking room at one time. If it wasn't, the air handling system brought the smoke in. It wasn't an extreme smell but it didn't give a great impression when walking in the room. Also, If I knew to ask ahead of time I would have requested a room in the main hallway closer to the elevator. We were furthest away from elevator down a very long hall and down another small hallway. It felt very remote so it completely freaked my young daughter out once when a very large male hotel customer got out on the same floor as us and seemed to "follow us" almost to our room (coincidentally he had a room only a few rooms away from ours so all was well). But it did also make me nervous for a second given the floor was so quiet it seemed like no-one would have heard anything if something nefarious did happen. Nothing you can really do about that, just something we have to remember for next time.

Cons: Paid extra for a room with a city view. We were given a room on the first floor that looked out at a parking lot and gas station.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The check in process was easy, and our request for an additional bed was handled was aplomb. We got a room intended for wheelchair disabled persons, so the room was fantastically spacious. The bathroom was a joy with all the hand rails. This hotel is only 6 months old, so everything is new, including numerous charging outlets. Our room had a fully stocked kitchen with full size fridge, oven, dish washer, stove, and microwave, and food was available to buy in the reception area. The bed and pull out sofa were soft and luxurious. I have never slept so well in a hotel. There is an exercise room and indoor swimming pool. There was a good Italian restaurant in within easy walking distance. Checkout was easy. The receptionist was awesome. I forgot my hat with my irreplaceable collection of pins on it. When I phoned from Union station, she went to the room, found it, and phoned me to ask for my address to mail it to me.

Pros: The room was clean, spacious, and more than we expected. Breakfast was above average. Pool and hot tub area was very nice and well kept. Ladies at the front desk were extremely friendly and helpful. Overall above average experience.
Cons: Breakfast items were not restocked. Empty ketchup bottles right at 7 when breakfast started. They had to send someone to store to get cream cheese for bagels. It seemed as though the breakfast attendant was in over her head or just did not care.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Big rooms, very clean
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean. Breakfast was awesome. The manager Ali went out of his way to help us when we had a our car break down at motel. He was accommodating and showed kindness and concern. He took a lot of stress off us during the situation by his attitude and willingness to try and help any way he could. Extremely good customer service skills. He’s a keeper and I hope he’s still there when we come again. One of the shuttle drivers also inquired if we needed any help with our car. The rooms were accommodated nicely and were pleasant. Extremely pleased with this visit.
Cons: The cleaning solution for floors was strong smell but maybe that’s just how that has to be.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: It was clean and the staff was very attentive
Cons: They had overbooked the room that I had reserved, and even though I had called before we arrived I wasn’t told this until we got to the hotel at 11 at night after a long drive. We had to have a smaller room with a smaller bed and my husband had to sleep on a terribly uncomfortable pull out couch. They did reimburse us the difference in price but it was a pretty tight squeeze with three of us in the smaller room all weekend.

Cons: Even though I had a confirmation, there were no rooms matching what I booked when I checked in, 2 queen beds.. I was given a second room which was comp'd however I was traveling with my kids and this now separated my family. Also, one of my rooms was handicap accessible which made the shower and bathroom very slippery. Disappointed with overall stay.

Pros: Location. New room that felt like a warm, welcoming and open kind of layout. It was easy to unpack and pack for our one night stay.
Cons: Sad there was not a whirlpool.

Pros: I like Firm bed here and spacious room
Cons: Table not suitable for computer use
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location, parking
Cons: bathroom was not as clean as it should have been.
7.5 Good
Pros: The room was fine but AC kept blowing cold air and wouldn’t stop, even in “off” setting. It was difficult to keep room warm enough. The food in the restaurant didn’t include many vegetarian choices. The take away food area was EXCEPTIONAL and so was the server on duty last night. She was very accommodating, very checked with the kitchen about two issues, was very helpful, very quick in preparing my order, very pleasant.
Cons: The transport to the Mall of America was poor. I waited an hour for it. I spoke to another lady who had come from the airport who stated she had the same problem coming to the hotel from the airport. We asked the receptionist several times, who said she would call the driver....we waited an hour regardless.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Best hotel bed I have ever slept on!
Cons: The lobby didn't seem very welcoming.

Pros: Shuttle to the airport every 30mnts. Close to beautiful Minnehaha Falls. Good Breakfast. Safe area and Hotel.
Cons: no free water in room

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean and spacious
Cons: Have to pay for parking
9.3 Excellent
Cons: When we ordered wine it took about an hour and a half for it to come up. And when it did the server already added a 10 doller tip to a 30 doller bottle of wine. I thought that was very sleazy and unprofessional. I had to call twice for him to remember to bring the wine.. not great service at all for something that takes very little to no prep time to make.

3.0 Mediocre
Pros: Location only, direct access to mall. Close parking (for additional fee)
Cons: No reliable airport shuttle service - had to use Uber after waiting 1+ hrs for shuttle and told that it was full. Caught cleaning staff going through belonging on spy cam (nothing stolen). Long walk to room. Comfortable beds, yet rooms are small.

Pros: We love the convenience of being able to walk right into the Mall of America. To be able to park and not have to leave the premises for a full weekend makes our stay and shopping experience so much easier.
Cons: There was a wedding or event going on on Friday night that made the hotel very noisy. There were shouts and laughter throughout the halls well into the morning hours. The doors and walls could definitely be insulated better.
9.5 Excellent
Cons: The bathroom was very small, that was the only thing that made my rating not a 10
