Top tips for renting a car at Shannon Airport

  • Ireland is home to the world-famous Burren limestone landscape and many other picturesque attractions like The Cliffs of Moher. This makes a car rental at Shannon Airport (SNN) the best option for exploring these and more. Explore these attractions at your pace, comfortably, and in style with a car rental from Shannon Airport. The airport is also the ideal landing spot as it is centrally located from these attractions, so most attractions are minutes away by car. A rental car is a suitable option, unlike relying on the bus, which only operates specific routes from the airport. Buses from Shannon Airport operate only five routes, heading to cities like Limerick, Galway, Cork, and Ennis, so they might not be reliable if you’re not planning on visiting such cities.
  • To acquire your rental at Shannon Airport, you can easily find the car rental center in the Arrivals Area. Once you exit the baggage claim area, make your way to the Arrivals Hall, and you can find counters of agencies like Hertz, Thrifty, Avis, Budget, and Enterprise to your right. The pick-up lot is less than a five minutes walk away, so no shuttle transfers are required. This way, you can drive out of the airport soon after your arrival.
  • Need to return your car to your provider? It's easy, fast, and convenient. Most car hire agencies have an agent onsite to ensure a swift drop-off so you can quickly be on your way. Ensure you make the drop off within the agreed time and during operating hours if your provider doesn't provide an after-hours return option. This way, you can avoid incurring a late return fee. Also, confirm that the car is clean and you have removed all your belongings before locking it.
  • Fortunately for travelers, Shannon Airport does not experience busy times like Dublin Airport. Grabbing your luggage, going through immigration, and picking up your rental should not be time-consuming. However, consider booking a flight that arrives between 9 am and 4 pm to be on the safe side. Most flights at the airport arrive and depart before 9 am and after 5 pm, so the time in between experiences less crowding. This means you can quickly drive out of the airport with your rental.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars at Shannon Airport for $18 or less
  • Book your rental car at Shannon Airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about renting a car at Shannon Airport

  • Which car hire agencies are most convenient at Shannon Airport?

Avis is the most convenient option for car rental at Shannon Airport. The agency allows renters to drop off and pick up rentals at their convenience. They provide after-hours services since the agency understands that not all flights depart during their operating hours. Hence, you can arrange the most convenient time to make a drop-off if you happen to be boarding a late-night return flight.

  • What amenities does the Shannon Airport car rental center offer?

Due to the convenient location of the Shannon Airport car rental center at the Arrival Hall, renters can access several nearby amenities. For instance, several ATMs are just a few steps away if you require cash for the rest of your trip. If you’re famished after your long flight, several dining options are a short distance from the rental center where you can grab a bite. Moreover, you get the opportunity to indulge in duty-free shopping at the nearby duty-free stores.

  • What type of documentation is required to rent a car at Shannon Airport?

All renters must present a valid driver’s license from their country of residence. Domestic renters should produce a valid passport or photo identification alongside the license. On the other hand, international renters must, in addition to their passport and license, present their residency information during their time in Ireland and proof of return travel. An international driver’s permit is required for non-EU license holders if the driver’s license is not in English.

  • How much does it cost to rent a car at Shannon Airport?

On average a rental car at Shannon Airport costs $27 per day.

  • Which car rental companies will pick you up at Shannon Airport?

Car rental companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Shannon Airport to off-airport locations include Budget, Thrifty, Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Easirent, Alamo, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, CARHIRE.ie, and Dollar.

The car was clean and pick up and drop off were very easy. However I never received an invoice/contract for the rental. This has led to confusion over how much I paid and what I was paying for. I would have loved to have seen a breakdown of what I was paying for.

Budget has definitely become more budget over the years. My “upgraded” car was not Apple CarPlay equipped (1st time in years of renting that I’ve seen this). Wasn’t explained to me so of course I didn’t opt for gps feature. Turned into a bit of a mess as I was trying to navigate off my phone. Check in was quick, but not helpful in any meaningful was. Car was rather beat up. Scratches/dents/intetior all showing age. Drop off was supreme. I’ll give them that.

Pick up was extremely slow. Other companies served 2 customers to Sixt one. The problem seemed to be regarding insurance provided by credit card companies. I used a Chase issued card and was told that I must contact Chase and have them email a letter to confirm that they would provide coverage. I had never experienced anything like this and had to spend time on vacation dealing with it from Another country. They should make it clear at the time of reservations that this is necessary!

Returning the car was great - the rep was very helpful. And the car worked well. However, when picking up the car, we were hit with an unexpected 10 euro per day charge since I was providing my own insurance. At no point was this charged identified or explained during my booking on Kayak. This doubled the price of the rental. The rep when we picked up the car said the charge was mandatory. I felt swindled since this was a total surprise.
