2 hrs delay. Entertainment system froze and no sound from time to time. Dirty seats.

Crew, spacious seats and airplane.
Plane was a bit old, like bathrooms.
I didn't eat dinner as I was too tired, but the breakfast was good and dinner looked pretty good. For airline food, that is. The staff were very polite and friendly.
I previously flew Tokyo to Sydney premium economy on Japan Air and that created expectations. This was significantly worse. The seats were not as comfortable or as spacious. On JL, you have a bit of a barrier between you and the person in the next seat. On Qantas, you very much do not. While this is probably more just bad luck than anything else, the boarding experience was nightmarish with swarms of people blocking every passage.
Checking process could use some improvement; LAX check-in counter staff was NOT customer oriented; got the feeling that either they hate the job and had a bad day?
The flight attendants were friendly and seemed to enjoy their job. Appeared to be very accommodating for other passengers.

Air New Zealand check-in as well as counter personnel were professional and courteous.
Booked through Kayak with what I thought was an equivalent Expedia ticket but was horrible surprised when I checked-in. Two other fellow travelers booked flight VA 7516 through Expedia for $218 (USD) one-way. I was able to open the same flight / departure time / price with Expedia but could not book. I then switched to Kayak and located this same flight (as I wanted to travel together with them), and it was for approximately same price. Upon check-in I was told it would cost $120 to check my luggage in (which I reluctantly paid). They indicated my ticket did not include this. I later discussed this with my two travelers and their check-in luggage plus a meal were included with their Expedia (Virgin Australia) ticket. Why was my Kayak (Virgin Australia) ticket so different from Expedia when our bookings were done about the same time? I no longer trust Kayak for future bookings.
The boarding process was efficient and the seat was comfortable enough for coach class across the Pacific. It was a definite bonus not having someone in the middle seat. The food was quite good, and I appreciated the ability to get snacks throughout the flight. The crew was efficient, the IFE is very good, and the entire experience was very positive. I will continue to fly ANZ internationally as often as I can.
