FAQs - booking Greece flights

  • Which airport in Greece should I fly into?

Greece has several major international airports which you can select based on your travel plans. Athens International Airport (ATH) is the main one and offers the widest range of connections for seamless travel. Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) provides easy access to northern Greece's attractions. Heraklion Airport (HKR) serves Crete's stunning locales, while Mykonos (JMK) serves as a gateway to the famous Cyclades islands.

  • Are there any direct flights from Washington Dulles Airport to Greece?

Currently, no direct flights are going from Washington, D.C. to Greece. However, if you fly into Athens (ATH), you will find plenty of flights with just one stop. Some cities you might have a layover in include Istanbul (IST) on Turkish Airlines, Frankfurt (FRA) with United, or London (LHR) with British Airways. If you’re flying into another airport like Thessaloniki Makedonia (SKG) or Mikonos (JMK), your flight will likely contain two or more stops.

  • Do I need a visa to travel from Washington Dulles Airport to Greece?

Greece is a Schengen country, which means that U.S. citizens can enter visa-free for up to 90 days. However, all visitors to the country will need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry and has at least one blank page for the entry and exit stamps. Nationals of other countries should check official government sites for the most up-to-date information.

  • Which airport should I fly into if I want to visit Santorini?

To visit Santorini, you should fly into Santorini Airport, also known as Thira Airport (JTR). You can book a flight directly from Washington Dulles (IAD). However, it will likely have two or more stops. Another option would be to book your flight to Athens (ATH) and then arrange a separate flight to Santorini. This option may save you money, as well.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Greece

  • Morning departure is around 23% cheaper than an evening flight, on average*.
  • Your journey will begin at Washington Dulles Airport (IAD), located about 25 miles east of downtown and connected via the WMATA silver train line. CLEAR and TSA Precheck are both available at this airport for those who want to expedite the security screening process.
  • If you are traveling to Greece on a budget, flying into Athens (ATH) from Washington Dulles (IAD) typically offers the most affordable rates. From there, you can book a ferry or ground transportation to make it to your final destination.
  • Some flights offered by Turkish Airlines and Icelandair may include multiple stops and require a self-transfer. This involves collecting your bags, checking in for the next flight, and going through security again. Ensure your layover provides ample time for these processes to board your next flight smoothly.
  • Consider making your flight more comfortable by upgrading your ticket to Premium Economy or Business Class. On Lufthansa, you can bid for upgrades on available seats. Simply make your offer and see if it’s accepted. You may end up getting a premium ticket for a fraction of the price.
  • When you book the EcoFly fare on Turkish Airlines, you’ll get a low fare, but only a carry-on bag will be included. If you’re traveling with more luggage, you might want to upgrade to the Flexible fare, which not only includes a checked bag, but you’ll get free ticket changes as well.

Was an excellent experience I have been flying Turkish Airlines for 5 years and always will

It was good. Turkish Airlines is one of the best airlines companies. I like a lot to travel with them

Four of my family members was settled in a different seats. I paid extra $200 dollars for 4 seats just to be all together, but they settled us on separated seats. After a lots of time they put us 2 and 2. My kids are 9 and 13 . How i can leave them alone???

It is much better than other airlines but not the best for the price

I did not like the quality of the food and there was no snacks offered between meals.

Awful seats, poor air circulation. Smelled like poop for 3-5 mins after someone used the bathroom. Child screaming for 13 hours

Temperature in plane in both segments was warm. Otherwise, great experience

Stale, bad and limited food, drink options. Entertainment system was broken, old and had barely any latest contents.

Love that they had a bassinet for our child during the flight. Thank you for that big time.

We are thankful for the useful gifts provided by the airline. The entertainment and crew were also very good

Everything was perfect except the pad at the top of the seat back. It pushes my head forward in a very uncomfortable position and it is not removable.

Good plane, crew, and flight. Boarding was a bit chaotic. Bathrooms were unacceptable. United DESPERATELY needs a new terminal at IAD.

United Airlines changed my flight 5 hours before I arrived at the airport. This messed up my entire day that I arrived in Japan.

Being stick waiting for gate at ORD cause me to almost miss my connecting flight…being deaf United made no no effort to keep me updated as I couldn’t hear the PA

The Economy Plus rows weren’t as roomy as expected, and the meal service left a lot to be desired for.

United ground crew and pilots are friendly. The in-flight staff (flight attendants) are the worst in the world. Multiple trips, always unpleasant, combative, use implicit threats to not allow for a discussion on their decision. Authoritarian. This seems to stem from an internal corporate wide policy as I doubt that United is intentionally searching for people that are not fit for customer facing positions. I will not fly United again. Good luck fixing your business

The flight was mostly on time, smooth and deplaning was quick. Baggage was really quick at the claim. Comfort was so-so and I paid for economy plus. It was still too crowded and why was a family of 5 scattered all around the plane?

We boarded and buckled and then deplaned due to no pilot. Had to wait over 3 hours for a new pilot. Not weather related, just poor management.

Flying to anchorage would have been cool but the weather got in the way

Extremely uncomfortable sitting in a small space for 2 hours, especially for older people. Understood it was circumstantial.

Had recurring problems with the touch-screen entertainment system repeatedly making up inputs, resulting in the movies randomly jumping forward and backward. With the lack of proper controls, it was also difficult to get back to where the movie was up to. These phantom inputs were so comprehensive that the system even changed the language setting. Despite a schedule 6.25pm boarding time, it was announced in the Delta lounge at 6.15pm that boarding for the flight had started, so of course everything started to head down. While the gate continued to show a scheduled boarding of 6.25pm, it was 6.32pm before boarding actually started. No, not significantly different, and we ultimately ended up landing well before time (and landing time is arguably more important than exactly when boarding starts). Seat comfort was fine, although only a small nook for personal items, food was satisfying for me, and crew was pleasant.

Entertainment system caused delay. But order was restored within one-hour into the flight. Service was good.

I did not go. I rebooked my ticket. Despite that you keep sending me emails and now this survey about a trip that you should know by now did not happen. Very bad, impersonal customer service. Shows you have no idea what's going on with your customers and that you're just spamming with automated, careless communications

Flight delayed 3 hours 45 minutes. Connecting flight changed. Would have missed cruise ship. Had to cancel return flight, because we couldn't just cancel flight to Nice.

Pilot made us late 45 minutes with no explanation, missed our connection, they didn’t care

The flights from EWR to Stockholm and from Copenhagen to JFK were great. Love everything from SAS

First off, numerous things were misrepresented. When we purchased the Economy Plus tickets the fare allegedly includes access to lounge. At Logan Airport where the signs points to, there is no longer SAS lounge. We were directed to Delta lounge, which is located at the other end of the terminal. When we got there, Delta reps told us that it is for SAS business class passengers only. The advertised seat selection 30 hrs prior to departure did not work online. When I called SAS, they told me that it was more than 30 hrs before our connecting flight in Copenhagen, although it was less than 30 hrs before the departure for Copenhagen. Customer service representatives would not provide any assistance. The tray table in my seat was not fully unfolding to be able to place the food tray on it. Therefore, I had to keep it on my laps.

It was a rather short flight. The meal given was a sandwich which did not look appealing at all. Unlike other European airlines, SAS did not leave the middle seat empty for the higher fare paying customers. Luckily since the flight was light, I could move to another row with no other passenger.

When we arrived in Bergen and opened our suitcases, we were shocked! We checked 2 of 3 suitcases and the contents of these 2 suitcases was completely wet!!! It was raining in Oslo and Bergen, but not a hard rain. It seems that someone had gone through our suitcases. There was even sand in the suitcase such that everything had to be laundered when we got to Bergen! We had plastic bags in our suitcases and they had been opened and the interiors of the bags were wet!!! Our valuables were all in our carry-on so nothing was actually stolen. What happened here was unacceptable! There is someone working for Scandinavian Airlines who is not honest and really messed things up for us. Not so sure I would fly SAS again… Marna Skaar

Passengers need to be consistently told by the stewardesses to position their seats up from recline when eating. This is not something passengers should have to request. Common courtesy...

Connecting from Germany with not enough time to go thru TSA and security so many times. Kayak or whomever doesn’t leave you enough time between flights. I made it with 5 min before my zone was called. Too stressful

Staff very helpful. Seat comfortable. Food generous and pretty good.

Connection time and departure time were both changed to cause undue stree on older people who cant run through an airport

We were delayed so long that I missed the next flight. I should’ve arrived in Catania at 4 o’clock and arrived at 1 AM. The late departure was due to a water leak due to a dirty filter, according to the flight staff, and that seems like something that should’ve been taken care of before the flight. It’s too simple of a mechanical problem to make you miss the whole day.

Liked nothing. Rude staff. Incompetent crew and workers. Wont fly with again

Everything was fine except the landing. We were off loaded on the tarmac. Squished on busses then driven around for 20 minutes. Dropped at terminal B and needed to be at A so had to wait 20 min in another line to catch a bus then another 20 min wait in customs! How on earth were we to get to our connecting flights!? Not a great first trip with your airline or start of my vacation. The woman on the tarmac was rude too

Seats were very small and of poor quality. Service was good.

The seats were extremely uncomfortable. I spent €25 on internet and never gained access to it. A flight attendant told me she would file a complaint/report on my behalf but it put me in a very difficult situation.

I asked for antibacterial wipes three times and each time I was told they will bring it to me right away with nothing delivered. I finally went to the galley and was told you did not have it. In a post COVID world that is just wrong. The crew was very non compassionate to passengers asking basic questions about food. Very disappointing and makes me reconsider my routing for the future trips.

It was a very full flight, makes it harder for flight crew.

It was horrible the woman next to me was sick and I asked if they would change my seat and they said that they didn’t have any available. I sat next to this women for 9 hour and now I am sick .

We booked and purchase our seats in February for a September flight. We choose seats then also, did the online check in on the app the day before and all was fine. At the airline check in they charged our seats and we were not even sitting together after paying for business class seats. They separated us with no explanation and would not change them back. I was very upset. On the return flight, they tried to put us on standby! When again, we purchased seats in February for this flight. The plane was old and smaller and the business class seats were not comfortable like the flight from NYC. Flight attendants were hard to find once the first meal was served, luckily the flights were smooth.

Not boarding 60 minutes late. after getting bumped to this flight because ITA do not hold a flight for five minutes as the fight to the connection was 45 minutes late

Crew was good. Very nice staff. Wine was good. Problems- no AC while waiting for takeoff. Long wait so we should have been more comfortable. No water for quite awhile. Food should have been better for an Italian airline. Chicken was pressed rounds of processed meat- not tasty. We had only one hour for our connection- ran through airport- plane waited for us and staff was helpful.

Poor , i missed the next flight to new york . We stayed inside the plane for almost 30 or 40min

Very frustrating trip. From Rome to boston , and i missed the next flight to new york

Everything was fine except the food. They really need to work on the quality of the food.

They are nice personal and as sky silver medaglia member love Delta air and partner

Cancelled my ticket and was never told and showed up to airport

ITA cancelled my flight and I was not able to make it to my connection flight. I had no choice but to book a totally different ticket, different airline and pay for a flight that I can't afford. ITA keeps saying I will get full refund, but I can't believe it.
