Scores according to KAYAK customer reviews
Pros: "I upgraded to the bigger chair and it was comfy."
Cons: "A cup of water would've been nice."
Cons: "Spirit terminal at Las Vegas was hopelessly crowded; standing room only. By contrast the Southwest terminal next door was orderly and calm. Spirit needs to find a location in the airport with more space."
Pros: "After my flight to Seattle, I dreaded the ride home to Chicago."
Cons: "Ridiculously crammed. Seats do NOT recline, even if you upgrade $60 one way on big seats, NO recline. Rip off, I paid more than your competitors flying nonstop ORD-SEA. We are smaller than avg. people. Also, the boarding agent was literally yelling at people during boarding. Very disrespectful."
Pros: "Nothing. Their seats don't even recline."
Cons: "The airline is a rip-off."
Cons: "I usually don't care too much about my flights from LA to Seattle since it's only a 2 hour flight. This was my first time with spirit and it was horrible from start to finish. Staff was unfriendly checking my bag in (I had to pay $82 for ONE checked bag), boarding the plane was a complete unorganized mess, the flight was bumpy and uncomfortable, the beverage I asked for on the flight was out of stock, the landing was horrific. By far, worst 2 hours on a plane I've ever experienced."
Pros: "When the lost luggage was returned (nothing missing) they put a cute tag on it that said "I missed you". But the aggravation was not worth the humorous picture of a bag with open arms. May I suggest that future passengers don't check luggage in more than 2-1/2 hours in advance. I suspect that they may not yet have a cart to accumulate luggage for your flight."
Cons: "I missed my connecting flight in Detroit due to my flight leaving late from Baltimore because of bad weather in Chicago. Spirit did not have any other connecting flights until 2 days later. They offered no assistance. I needed to be at my destination the next day for a wedding, so I had to purchase an additional ticket out of pocket from Southwest (staff was very helpful). I recommend removing Spirit Airlines from Kayak."
Cons: "Didn't like the extreme added on expenses. $57 for a checked bag to Seattle. No seat reservation fee going to Seattle. On the return $47 for a checked bag. Had to reserve a seat for the return. The fee started at $18 the website went down and upon getting back online the seat reservation fee increased from $18 to $20 in a matter of 1-2 minutes"
Pros: "2 hrs"
Cons: "2 hrs delay. With not notifying. No updates and No one was at the gate until last second to boarding. This is my 2nd time with spirit. And the same happened. I Never ho with spirit. I had to pay for laugage that all airlines have a free carry on."
Cons: "Return Flight on 5/31 / #770 Detroit to Seattle: upon arriving at the Detroit airport learned we had to pay $59 per carry on bag. DID NOT have to do that for first flight from Seattle. Nickel & dimed the whole flight . Paid more than we would have with other preferred airline which we normally travel Impersonal service Broken seat in front of me so that tray did not operate & leg room - what there was of it - very compromised Staff on board are sloppy when giving instructions, especially on the intercom. Need speaking training. Talk way to fast, slur their words. Will NEVER fly Spirit again. You get what you pay for."
Pros: "The plane was nice looking, that's about it."
Cons: "My arrival flight was dirty, I believe I contracted some kind of rash from the nasty seat, the crew almost tried to find a way to charge me for napkins while I was attempting to clean the seat, I had to pay $180 for one carry on each for my fiance and I RT, the return flight was delayed, back on time, then delayed 3x which caused us to miss an opportunity for a late check out from our hotel and we spent 4 unnecessary hours at the airport. I will never recommend Spirit or travel with them again."
Pros: "Spirit is a low cost airline. You save money flying with them as long as you only bring one personal item and print your boarding pass from home."
Cons: "Leg room is small and not comfortable for taller people. There is nothing provided in the flight."
Pros: "The color of the plane loud and wild passengers."
Cons: "An aborted Landing approximately 800ft above the ground. Pilot almost landed at he wrong airfield"
Pros: "The crew was friendly and I liked the sense of humor mixed in with the overhead announcements"
Cons: "Upon checking in I was informed that my backpack counts as my ONE free carry on and I would have to pay $50 to check in my tiny suitcase or $55 to have it as a second "carry on." Since when is a back pack a carry on? Boarding was delayed for at least 30 minutes with no explanation given to us. Very bare minimum plane with no entertainment other than what you bring with you. Any snack or drink costs money, no cash."
Cons: "charge too expensive for baggages.delay too long."
Pros: "I liked that the fare was cheap."
Cons: "Self-deprecating jokes from the crew about how they charge for bags, food, and oxygen."
Pros: "very good service and price,"
Pros: "Boarding was very smooth. Pilot was really good. Safe landing. Quick baggage claim."
Cons: "Food was really expensive. Seats were very uncomfortable."
Pros: "You pay for what you get. Very basic. But grateful for the cheap flight as it was a very sudden decision to go."
Pros: "I don't like nothing."
Cons: "My husband and I had to pay for our carry on bags 110$. We always travel around the world and it never happened us. Supposed we have to travel without nothing? It is the first time with this company and we were not aware we have to pay that amount. I will never travel with this company."
Cons: "Pay for everything else"
Pros: "Purchasing the front row seat was worth the money for the extra legroom and to be off the plane right when we landed"
Cons: "Two hour delay due to bad parts"
Cons: "Each carry on cost $45.00 and a checked bag leaving Las Vegas was $41.00. No snacks or drinks on plane, unless you paid more money. The seats do not recline. The crew was nice."
Cons: "Tried to change carry on bag to a checked bag....found NO WAY to accomplish that. When doing the initial booking site skip the ability to do bags at the time of booking"
Cons: "Having a checked in bag is cheaper than carry-on. If you dont buy a checked in bag or carry-on at the time of booking its more expensive to pay for it later which is bizzare. I paid $85 for one checked in luggage roundrip when most airlines charge $50 for roundrip. Cannot select seats and seats dont recline."
Pros: "Hard to like anything when I was already in a bad mood because of the delay."
Cons: "Flight was 3 hours late. I had to wait with my daughter and mother for 3 hours until we finally boarded at 1AM."
Pros: "Flight was scheduled to arrive at the perfect time to meet another person flying in from a different location."
Cons: "You can't check in to the flight without registering (for what?). Fee policies were unclear until after ticket was purchased "Ultra low fares" are not lower than other airlines so all the hard sell tactics are not actually justified. They just make you look like scam artists. Baggage fees are mind bogglingly confusing and present you with choices for which you may or may not be eligible. Crew constantly reminds us of the crappy service as if they are proud of it (as in "please clean up the plane for us so we can keep your fares low"). Web site does not tell you what will happen if you don't choose a seat."
Cons: "I missed my flight because I had the wrong flight info so ended up buying another ticket and booking a hotel!!"
Pros: "There is absolutely nothing to like and no financial benefit to flying spirit."
Cons: "You pay for carry ons. You can't print your tickets at the gate. The counter isn't open all the time and it didn't open on time. The flight time changed four times with no notification to the passengers, we had to keep asking why we hadn't boarded yet. The bathrooms on the plane weren't functioning. And you can't even get a cup of water - that'll cost you too. I would never EVER fly with spirit again. It was the worst and cost way more than other airlines after all the ridiculous fees."
Pros: "The employees/crew are fine. It's not their fault that the company they work for is terrible."
Cons: "I was surprised that they didn't charge you for using the bathroom. Honestly, what very little cost savings you get with the fare is completely negated by the additional charges for basically everything. We basically saved $20 on our fare over another airline, but wound up paying an additional $225 for having one carry-on each and being able to select a seat. Not even an exit row seat or one with extra legroom. Just picking a regular seat. Absolutely the worst deal in terms of air travel. Avoid at all costs. Heh."
Cons: "First of all I tried to check in online to avoid the $52 per bag (wtf??!!!) fee. But their shitty website wouldn't let me. When we got to the airport the girl that checked us in was nice enough (I guess) to charge us the online check in price- $42 per bag. Still ridiculous and the weight limit is 40 lbs not 50. She had SOOOO much trouble doing this. She probably asked me 5 times if we (my bf and I) were both checking a bag. I know pot is legal in WA but come on. Finally we get our bags checked and paid for. Already annoyed. We waited forever to board. Probably started boarding 15/20 mins before our flight time. It was the same type of plane that I flew to Seattle in- so uncomfortable. The seats are awful and they don't even recline. The seat "pocket" in front of you is literally bungee cord so you can't put anything in it. And the tray table is TINY. No tv, no music, no blanket or pillow (9:40pm flight you'd think they would know people want to sleep). Just awful all together. So uncomfortable. I received an email from Spirit asking me to fill out a customer service survey- the link didn't work! Big surprise!!! They're probably sick of hearing all the complaints! Never flying with them again."
Pros: "First your tickets are pricey then the baggage fees are stupid dumb why pay so much i dont understand but this is definitely the first and last time id fly with spirit"
Cons: "First your tickets are pricey then the baggage fees are stupid dumb why pay so much i dont understand but this is definitely the first and last time id fly with spirit"
Cons: "I didn't realize that I have 0 carry-ons and 0 checked bags. Checked bags were slightly less expensive than a carryon so I brought a larger checked bag with me for the smaller price. It's a steep price though! $83 round trip. It would have been nice if Kayak put some kind of tag on flights that don't include carryon/checked bags, or let me choose how many of each I needed and factored those into the flight costs when I do my price search."
Pros: "Quick boarding, on time flights, good communication from captain"
Cons: "Spirit nickel and dimes you for everything!! Also there was an elderly man who could barely walk and no one from spirit or airlines helped him. You charge to have someone check you in?? Horrible!"
Cons: "The flight leaving Seattle was delayed so long it made me not want to Fly Spirit again"
Cons: "Too many hidden fees."
Pros: "The seating. The customer service."
Cons: "Really nothing"
Cons: "Online experience left something to be desired. Not very user friendly."
Cons: "Charge for EVERYTHING. Not a good deal at all. My trip out was two hours late leaving. By the time I paid for my carry on and one checked bag and an assigned seat, it was ,ore expensive than Alaska Airlines and not anywhere near as comfortable. I will never fly Spirit again."
Pros: "No frills"
Cons: "No frills"
Pros: "The plane was clean. Staff seemed friendly."
Cons: "Paying $55 for carry on bags was atrocious. We boarded 30 mins late. and my gate was changed last minute. We didn't even get free drinks on the plane. Only 2 bathrooms in whole plane."
Cons: "Tolt to get to airport 3 hours early but had to wait over an hour to get them to set up printer for birding passes. I fly a lot, first and last time on Spirit, they didn't seem professional."
Pros: "Gate agent was helpful and courteous."
Cons: "Excessive fees for bags seems almost criminal. $100 for a bag at the gate? Additonally the range is anywhere from about $40 to $ 55 if purchased in advance. Airline did not inform me of this policy so I wasn't aware they charge for carry-on bags but was able to handle this without issue at the gate counter with a polite agent. It was resolved appropriately, without incident or cost as I was able to clearly show I was never informed. The real problem was a different agent later tried charging me for the small and obvious personal item upon starting the boarding process. The gate agent informed me if I didn't pay then the contents of my personal item would have to be moved to a "clear trash bag provided by Spirit" and the personal bag be left behind. This continued until I pulled up a size chart and clearly showed the agent my bag was within personal bag limits. Another couple was not so fortunate and was forced to move their luggage to a clear plastic garbage bag by this gate agent after being unable to pay for bags. They were then forced to step aside and board last, allowing everyone to see the airline's bag policy in full display. I'm not sure how shaming those unable to pay steep bag fees is an acceptable practice but Spirit sure does it."
Cons: "$50 dollars to check in a bag when I thought it would be $25 and the weight limit was only 40 lbs"
Cons: "There were no updates at all and suddenly the flight was cancelled. They offered no help to us, and they still haven't refunded me. I will NEVER fly with this airline again."
Pros: "They Charge for a Drink of Water"
Cons: "You shouldn't have to pay $3.00 for a drink of water. $60.00 for round trip fee for my roll-aboard that always fits in the overhead seems unreasonable especially since my weight plus the weight of the bag was probably less than the weight of most of the adults on the flight All extra fees should be disclosed before a person clicks to buys a ticket."
Pros: "I understand that things happen, mechanical issues can cause a flight to get cancelled but how the situation was handled was absolutely appalling. There was ONE person (division manager?) who went above and beyond and apologized for the less than professional behavior of his colleagues, comped us meal vouchers and assisted us in searching for flights on other airlines - while he didn't have the capabilities to actually book the flights himself, he still aided in helping us find ones which was very much appreciated."
Cons: "As soon as our flight was cancelled and the announcement was stated that refunds would be offered, a massive line formed (naturally) and there were two girls working the ticket counter. Their customer service was TERRIBLE. One of the girls was snapping back at customers. I understand that customers can be rude and downright mean especially in situations like this, however the employees job should be to attempt to diffuse the anger, not add to it. Not only was this a reoccurring situation with one of the employees, but the second employee LEFT - just walked away from a line of 50+ People with no explanation to anyone and never came back? Which only added to everyone's frustration. How she handled that was outright ridiculous. I assume she has another place to be, but to walk away with zero explanation is unacceptable."
Pros: "Price was low and that's about it. But I'd much rather pay extra $100 to fly on a better airline. Price equals out to be similar anyway."
Cons: "Everything else was absolutely terrible. Ticketing. Departure. Service. Landing. Arrival. Everything. I will not be using this airline again."
