Driving in Edmonton is nice. Streets are wide. Be aware most people drive about the speed limit and don’t run lights. So if you’re used to Ontario, you need to be in less of a hurry. That said I got everywhere I needed on time and easily. It was nice to drive here.

While the capital of Canada's Alberta region may offer good transportation services in the city, renting a car is a great option for travelers looking to embark on some outdoor adventures outside the city. Driving is the best way to get to must-see destinations that are fairly close to the city such as the Elk Island National Park, which is only a 35-minute drive from Edmonton and is the perfect place to hike, canoe, or even camp. Head to the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve, which is located just 40 minutes east of Edmonton, for an incredible stargazing experience and a good chance to spot the northern lights.
All the big car rental agencies can be found at Edmonton International Airport (YEG), including Alamo, Enterprise, and Hertz. The car rental counters are located near the baggage claim area on Level P1 (Ground Level) of the Parkade. Some car rental companies may require that you contact them a few days in advance, so make sure you chose one that accommodates your needs.
Edmonton has a few interior highways and even a ring road, but you don't necessarily have to take the main roads (such as Whitemud, Yellowhead, or Anthony Henday) as they end up being the busiest. Look out for cyclists during the months when the weather is good. It was a seamless experience! The front desk experience went smoothly and quickly, the staff was attentive and helpful. I didn’t get the Chevy Malibu as I had hoped, but the car I got was even better: the 2026 VW Jetta GLI. It drove like a dream. No issues whatsoever. It was clean and smelled good. I was happy that there was an unlimited mileage option. Bringing it back went smoothly and quickly as well. Only thing was I was told at the front desk to keep my gas receipt to show I filled it up before dropping it off and the attendant in the lot said that wasn’t necessary. Besides that, everything went fine!

Rented a car went to the place to go get it and they said they did not have any vehicle vehicles available yet. I’ve rented it paid the taxi to drive down there. And ended up having to pay for a taxi even more to go from that budget back to my place and was Vehicle list. Very inconvenient. Do not trust if they have something available.

The car was dirty. The chips on the windshield were not documented properly. Had to call later to document the rock chips with Hertz since their renting agent didn't document it on the photos he took. The car was not really SUV. It was a crossover. As well, the windows were not tinted at all. So the vehicle's windows were not easy on the eyes. Additionally, the inside of the vehicle was entirely exposed to the outside, so we could leave our belongings and suitcases in the vehicle unattended!

My money robbed by Herts without giving me a car. Just fooled me saying car will be ready at 12, when I went there they said car is not available and probably will come in the evening, asked me to take another car paying double the money. The bottom line is simple, you make people to book for lower price/ show attractive price in websites, when you reach there simply say cars are not available, only high end cars are available, if you want pay more and take.

The employee repeatedly insisted that I take additional insurance, even though I clearly stated several times that I did not need it. In the end, I was charged $92 for insurance I did not want.

Unfortunately thrifty charged us for the extra insurance even though our booking we did online had already charged us for this. When I discovered this they would not give me any money back so I paid far too much for this car rental.
