KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Mobile
Rich in history, Mobile is a popular destination in the United States’ South. You will find it beneficial to rent a car so that you can visit some of the nearby resort and beach towns like Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Dauphin Island (accessed via ferry). With a rental car you can also enjoy the white sandy beaches of the Florida Panhandle.
Mobile Regional Airport offers easy access to many cities around Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. This airport provides travelers with many modern conveniences including free wi-fi, coffee shops, eateries, and car rental services. Several rental car agencies are just steps from the terminal, including Thrifty, National, and Hertz. Some others are right across the street.
When driving on the Alabama highways, keep an eye out for construction workers. By law, you must move over to the lane farthest away from the worker(s) for added safety. Rainstorms are also very common in Mobile, which can cause difficult driving situations. If it starts to rain heavily while you are driving on vacation, be sure to turn on your headlights, slow down to keep control of your vehicle, and don’t brake suddenly, as this can cause you to hydroplane.
Rush hour in Mobile can add to your travel times. Traffic tends to get busy by around 6 a.m. for the morning commute, although it is the heaviest from 7 a.m. – 8 a.m. approaching downtown. In the evenings commuters typically return home from work between the hours of 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., which can also cause some traffic delays. You’ll especially want to avoid driving on the George Wallace Tunnel during these times.
Finding cheap car rentals at Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) is as easy as driving into the city center from the airport. Pick up your car in the rental car lot, which is a short walk from the car rental counters in the terminal’s Baggage Claim area. From there, it’s only about a 12.5-mile drive east to Mobile’s city center. From MOB, hop onto Airport Blvd and travel about 9.5 miles. When Airport Blvd ends, you can take Government St (US-90) the into the city center.
When driving in Mobile, Alabama, remember that the driver and passengers in the front seat must always wear a seat belt. Seat belts are optional for adults riding in the back seats, but children under 15 years of age must always wear a seat belt in the car. Infants and toddlers should ride in a child seat that is sized appropriately for their comfort and safety. Children must use a car seat or booster seat until the age of 5. If you’re traveling with young children, you may want to find out which Mobile car rentals offer car seats or booster seat options.
After finding cheap car rentals in Mobile, drivers should be aware of several annual events that bring extra traffic, road closures, and parking restrictions to the city. Mardi Gras is a 2-week city-wide celebration that brings lots of excitement, but also some parking restrictions, to the city’s streets. Expect detours caused by street closures for the parades on John Cain Day (the Sunday before Lent) and the Mardi Gras parade on Fat Tuesday. Several large sporting events draw large crowds to Mobile causing parking restrictions and crowded streets, including college football bowl games at the Ladd-Peebles Stadium and the Hancock Whitney Stadium, and the Mobile BayBears minor-league baseball games at the Hank Aaron Stadium. You can also expect road closures in late March as runners take to the streets for the annual Azalea Trail Run.

10.0 Wonderful
Amy, Oct 2022
Love that the rental car pick up and drop off is right at the doors of the airport. Nice and helpful staff, car was clean and easy to find.
2.0 Poor
Jonathan, May 2021
Cons:
The car provided to me was filthy. I could barely see through the smeared windshield, and there wasn't a drop of washer fluid. Worse, there was a terrible scraping sound that Hertz must have known about. This car should not have been rented to anyone, certainly not at the high price that I paid. It was the worst rental car experience I have ever had.
8.0 Very good
Robert, Mar 2021
Pros:
Staff was friendly but somewhat busy for no reason
Cons:
The vehicle could have been cleaner and not missing a mat
4.0 Mediocre
Anonymous, Dec 2020
Cons:
When I picked up the car, I was told that the gas tank was full. When I got on the road, I realized that the tank was only 1/4 full. The vehicle also reeked of cigarette smoke to the point that we had to get air fresheners and all had a massive headache. The car was not clean on the outside. Inside was fine. We also had to put air in one of the tires three different times during our trip. This was not a good car rental experience.
Easy pick up and drop off. The car swap was pretty smooth.
Cons:
Flat tire half way through the trip. No damage to the tire it just went flat somehow so that added about 3 hours to the trip. Road side assistance took two hours to get to us when it was estimated to be a little less than an hour (he changed it very quickly though and was very nice).
2.0 Poor
Shannon J, Sep 2020
Pros:
They cancelled my reservation 8 hours before I needed the car which put me in a bind. Then I had to make a reservation with another company and pay double the price. They would not reimburse me or give me any sort of reparation.
My receipt when I booked was $44 and after I returned the car the price was $80
6.0 Okay

Cons:
Wreaked of marijuana
4.0 Mediocre
Anonymous, Mar 2021
Cons:
They didn’t have a vehicle ready for me to pick up. I had to wait 45 minutes for a car.
2.0 Poor
Anonymous, Feb 2021
Pros:
Nothing. They gave away our car. Staff was rude at Mobile Airport and basically just said, "We don't have any cars." No offer to help fix this, despite the fact that they didn't hold our reservation.
Cons:
1. They could have held our reservation--we did nothing to deserve them not having a car for us. 2. They could have offered to help find another car someplace else after they gave our reservation away. 3. They could have at least act like they cared that they screwed us.
10.0 Wonderful
Emily, Jan 2021
Pros:
Yes to both!
Cons:
The expense, $13.00/day, was a little high to add a second driver. Was not expecting that expense.
2.0 Poor
Michael, Jan 2021
Pros:
Nothing at all
Cons:
Rude employees. No cars were available at time of pick up. Left me stranded there for 30 hours until I could find a flight back home. Ruined my vacation.
